This item can be acquired through Enchanting vendors (there's always one at each city, several more in other locations) by buying the Lesser Magic Essence, at 8 silvers each (7s20c with the Revered discount). Since it's a pretty early material to level Enchanting, you can buy ahead before starting leveling, but Strange Dust (also sold at the same vendors, for the same price - but in this case it often can be bought at AH for even lower) should be your primary material throughout almost the whole first 100 levels.

Despite what you may see here, it does take three Lesser Essences to create a Greater Essence. What you see here is actually a quirk of the way Blizzard handles the spell. On Blizzard's end, a two-step process occurs:

You use the first Lesser Essence, destroying it in the process.
A spell is cast, which destroys the other two Lesser Essences, and creates a Greater Essence.

This spell here--step two--is the spell that gets listed here on Wowhead.

Right click the Lesser Magic Essences, that will turn them into the Greater ones. Conversely clicking on a Greater will break it into 3 Lesser.

3 lesser magic essences make 1 greater magic essence. No special skill needed to change it, just have 3 and click on them to convert. You can buy both lesser and greater magic essence at the AH.

Three toons (maybe the same player) have a stack of this stuff on Alliance AH in Earthen Ring for 10x what Alla lists. Are they on some kind of crack or did the expansion somehow make prices spike?

If like me you have a ton of these built up and nothing to do with them, you can make greater magic wands and vendor them (the return is better than lesser magic wands). Just grab a runed copper rod (the rod comes from the vendor, not blacksmiths) and buy a simple wood for each. A stack of 10 greater magic essence will net you about 1.3 gold. Unfortunately you have to hit the button to make each wand, as it's an "enchant" and not a "create."
