Welcome to Wowhead's Hunter Pet Guide for Wrath of the Lich King Classic. This guide will cover Taming Pets, Feeding Pets, as well as Hunter Pet Talent Trees, Exotic Pets, and Recommended Pets for Raiding in Wrath of the Lich King Classic.

WoTLK Classic Hunter Pets
Wrath of the Lich King see's some pretty significant changes to pets, and the Beast Mastery Tree final talent

will allow you to tame exotic pets such as certain dungeon bosses and open world elites that were previously untamable. If a Beast Mastery Hunter respecs and no longer has the
奇珍异兽
talent then the exotic pet will no longer be usable. Pets are also now broken down into three families: Ferocity, Cunning, and Tenacity. These pet families each have their own unique talent tree and each have their own purpose.
Ferocity pets such as wolves will be your go-to raid pets due to their talent tree providing many useful dps talents and buffs, while cunning and tenacity pets and talent trees see useful talents for survivability and utility.

Hunters may still only have one active pet at a time, however you can now use the ability
to swap out your pets at any time while not in combat. There are now two additional stable slots for a total of 5 up from 3.
All pet attack speeds remain normalized at 2.0 in WoTLK Classic.
Pet loyalty levels and ability ranks no longer exist. By default your pet will automatically learn the highest rank of each ability as it levels up. There is no need to go out and tame specific pets with a certain level of an ability to learn it for all future pets you tame.
New Stat Scaling
Pets get 45% of the hunter's stamina added to their stamina.
Pets health, armor, and damage modifiers are now linked to their spec and talent tree.
Pets get 22% of the hunter's ranged attack power added to their melee attack power.
Pets get 12.5% of the hunter's ranged attack power added to their spell damage.
Pets now have a base resistance to all elements equal to their level.
Pets now have a built in 90% avoidance to all aoe damage
Pets benefit from the hunter's hit and critical ratings

There are a total of 32 pet familes/types and 7 exotic families.
Taming Hunter Pets in WoTLK Classic
Taming pets in WoTLK Classic is very similar to how it is in Battle for Azeroth, with a few exceptions.
Only the Beast pet family is tamable as other pet families have not been introduced yet.
You cannot tame a beast that is a higher level than you are.
While channeling

your armor will be reduced by 100%, therefore it is recommended that you always use
while taming your desired pet to avoid the possibility of dying. Also ensure that the area around you is clear and that no other mobs will pat into you while you are taming. Exotic pets will be quite challenging to tame and some will require a party to help you successfully tame the pet.
You can now have five pets at once; one active one and four at the stablemaster.
Feeding your WoTLK Classic Pets
Pet Happiness
Pets have a happiness level and in order to maintain your pets happiness, you must feed it. Feeding your pet is very important for overall output. The happier your pet is, the more damage it deals:
Happy: 125% damage
Content: 100% damage
Unhappy: 75% damage
WoTLK Classic Hunter Pet Diets
Each individual pet family will only each specific types of food. When taming a new pet ensure you have the correct type of food ready to feed your pet immediately. If you are unsure about what type of food your new pet will need ahead of time you can use

WoTLK Classic Hunter Pet Families
In Classic WoTLK there are three families of pets now, each with it's own specific talent tree.
Ferocity
- Ferocity pets are strictly damage dealer type pets. The talent tree is focused mainly around the hunter and pet damage, and there are a few talents to aid in survivability however those talents will rarely used if ever.
Cunning
- Cunning pets have no single purpose. They are a great choice for open world solo gameplay, group dungeons, and pvp. The talent tree is focused more on mobility and utility over strictly damage.
Tenacity
- Tenacity pets are your tank pets. This family of pets have an extra health bonus, and the talent tree talents are build around survivability, buffing allies, and taunting enemies. Tenacity pets such as

make excellent solo quest leveling pets.
You can use the above tables to see which family each pet falls into.
WoTLK Classic Exotic Pets
With the introduction of WoTLK Classic, Beast Mastery Hunters can now tame new and exciting exotic pets that were previously untamable, providing you have the talent
奇珍异兽
. Not every single boss and elite are tamable so you still need to use

or look up the database for each individual tame possible.
The following pet families are the new exotic tames:

WoTLK Classic Pet Talent Trees
With WoTLK Classic, each specific pet family has it's own unique talent tree. As mentioned earlier these talent trees are focused around different scenarios such as pure dps, utility and mobility, and solo questing or pvp.
Below will be some examples are talent tree builds you could use specific to raiding for Marksmanship, Survival, and Beast Mastery. Tenacity and Cunning Talent builds can differ quite significantly based on your own situation where it be open world questing, pvp, or dungeon grinding.

Recommended Hunter Pets WoTLK Classic
Below are the recommended pets you should acquire for your stable slots. With WoTLK you now have 5 stables slots to utilize instead of only 3. Typically your go to pets will be a wolf, bear, crocolisk, and then a devilsaur, and/or worm if you are Beast Mastery.

What makes the

so important and nearly required as a raid pet is
. This pet ability will grant you and your pet 320 melee and ranged attack power for 20 seconds, with a 40 second cooldown. This attack power will greatly increase your overall dps output over the course of each encounter.
Bear or Crocolisk
Having a
熊
and/or
鳄鱼
in your arsenal is not 100% necessary, however will be extremely handy for those leveling from scratch or undergeared level 70 characters that do not have enough damage output to quickly dispatch enemies before their pet can have any real input. The higher natural armor and health pools coupled with the Tenacity talent tree make these pets excellent for leveling and tanking elite mobs.
Devilsaur

is an exotic pet therefore limited to Beast Mastery Hunters with the

talent. What makes

competitive and unique is their ability
. This stacking ability is a fairly decent dps increase although a slight dps loss from
狼
. The dps difference is minor, so if you feel like using an exotic pet then by all means do so, your raid performance will not see a dramatic decrease.

Another exotic beast that applies a debuff is rhino's stampede ability that applies 25% increased bleed.
Since most hunters don't go for beast mastery, it's worth mentioning wasp for 5% armor reduction in case you don't have druids (we all know warlocks don't use curse of weakness).
Also carrion bird does 574 reduced attack power (same as 2 points in paladin vindication and 5 points in feral/warrior shout) to enemies in melee range
