The Book of Fel Names (the quest item) stays in your inventory after you complete the quest. As far as I can tell, there isn't a need for the item anymore, and it can be thrown away.

As of Patch 2.0.10, Slayer's Axe no longer has the listed proc on it. So, this helps me easily choose my reward as a Paladin.

As a sidenote, be aware the book has a very very long cast time, like 8 sec or so.

Yep! done today, me (rogue, mutilate spec) with a paladin tank and druid healer, we're mostly in your-average-blue-gear but it was easy really, maybe the tree popped a potion on varedis, but as for the rest he wasn't even bothering healing just meleeing with me :P

Varedis is REALLY easy if you just "MOVE!!" when he's about to finish casting his fire spell, thats all ! its a 2.5 sec cast, if u got enemy casting bars shown (in your interface options) then its really easy to notice.

Most of the elites have mana burn, but with about 150 mp/5 on the tree druid this wasnt nearly a problem, rofl. Blessing of Wisdom ftw!

I thought I would add my group's experience doing this quest, in case someone might find it useful. Our group make up was hunter, rogue, mage, and druid tank (me). You might notice we are lacking a dedicated healer.

As people have already mentioned, three of the four elites are not very tough. They aren't anything special. The only one that was problematic was Varedis himself.

If you have dps, a druid tank, but no healer, then what you can do is clear out the staircase that leads up to Varedis. When your druid tank gets around half or so health, he jumps straight down next to the foot of the staircase, and that should give him enough time to heal himself.

Then just catch him back on the staircase and bring him back upstairs.

Repeat if necessary.

Oh, and don't forget to use the book of fel names.

This quest used to be so worthwhile because of the <b>one handed</b> healing dagger. Now it's awesomeness has gone to shit.

3 manned this with an arms specced war doing 2handed tanking, a rogue and a paladin healer. No purple gear on anyone.

This is the conclusion to the Scryer version of the Book of Fel Names chain, which gives Aldor/Scryer rep as well as some nice blue rewards. If you complete it, you can choose from:
Ceremonial Kris (+heal dagger)
Slayer's Axe (2H +str axe)
Sunfury Legguards (+AP mail pants)
Hauberk of Karabor (+AP leather chest)
Summoner's Blade (+dmg sword)
Wildcaller (feral staff)

As with the Medallion of Karabor line, this chain starts different depending on whether you're Aldor (A) or Scryer (S). All the quests are rated level 70 - though the chain is available at level 68, it sends you to the Shadow Labyrinth to kill Blackheart, which you might want to hold off on until level 70.

Aldors pick it up from Exarch Onaala at the Altar of Sha'tar:
1. (A) Karabor Training Grounds
2. (A) A Necessary Distraction
3. (A) Altruis

Scryers need to visit Larissa Sunstrike at the Sanctum of the Stars:
1. (S) Karabor Training Grounds
2. (S) A Necessary Distraction
3. (S) Altruis

Here the chains converge on your old friend Altruis the Sufferer in Nagrand. He gives out three quests that need to be completed (in any order) before you can continue:
4a. Against the Legion - Netherstorm
4b. Against the Illidari - Shadowmoon Valley
4c. Against All Odds - Zangarmarsh
Having gone around the world killing stuff, you can now return to Altruis and receive:
5. Illidan's Pupil
which leads directly into
6. The Book of Fel Names

Now it's time for a venture into the Shadow Labyrinth to kill Blackheart! Once that's done that and his body has been looted for the book, it's back to Altruis where again the chains diverge depending on your allegiance.

Aldor:
7. (A) Return to the Aldor - back to Altar of Sha'tar
8. (A) Varedis Must Be Stopped

Scryer:
7. (S) Return to the Scryers - back to Sanctum of Stars
8. (S) Varedis Must Be Stopped

Varedis Must Be Stopped is the final part. It's a 5-man group quest that sends you to the terrace outside the Black Temple to kill four elites: Varedis, Netharel, Theras and Alandien. Look them up for co-ordinates and tips on killing them - they're pretty straightforward, really.

When they're dead it's a simple matter of returning to the questgiver to choose a prize.

I just 2-manned the 3 smaller guys. Druid tank and me as a frostmage. The mana burn is kinda annoying, but with a mana emerald you shouldn't have too many problems. We have some kara gear, but should be doable in blues I guess.

Varedis is harder though. Druid can't really stand the magic damage, so we're getting a healer for the next try. Shouldn't be too hard then.

How about: rogue, affliction (i think) lock, Oomkin druid?

Rogue (me) tanked, using healthstones and potions for healing, and it worked for the first three. For Varedis we called in a hunter. I still tanked, while the druid healed. He uses some fire AOE type spells which hurt a bit more than his melee (honestly, i didn't know what the heck was going on. Just trying to stay alive. We rogues don't tank so well.) At around 35% he transforms into a demon, and this is where you use the Book of Fel Names. It's a fairly long cast that results in him returning to Elf form. I was the only one with the quest, so I used it while he beat on me. I did not notice that he hit any harder, or anything particularly special about his "powers" in demon form, but there you go.

Needless to say, with a "normal" group of five 70s, or even four, this should be pretty easy. But I had been trying for several weeks to get a group, and this was the best I could do. Good luck.

Ok folks this is so much of a cluster fork it is not funny, so here goes with all the information to get this quest completed.

Goto Shadow Labs, and Kill BlackHeart the Insighter, he will drop a book, that will give you the ability to kill Varedis, called the Book of Fel Names, which is needed to kill Varedis.

Ok now start killing all those other like :
Alandien 59, 63
Theras 71,48
Netharel 68, 51
Varedis 71 52 - when he gets to about 40,000 health use the book otherwise he will become immune to all that you can throw at him.

As a feral druid I want to cry about this quest. I want both the Hauberk of Karabor and the Wildcaller! I don't know what to do! It's so hard to choose. I never get to raid because of my work schedule so my chances of getting anything better than these are rather slim :-(

I have an odd question... Do you get to keep the Book of Fel Names after you use it once? Or is it gone forever after you use it once? You never know when someone may lead Varedis somewhere you don't want them to...

Managed to solo this quest as a hunter! The key is to clear all the trash mobs surrounding the elites and then use the terrain and elevations from the side of the stairs to cheese the encounter. The hardest elite is without a doubt Varedis, because you have to cast the book in order to get rid off his invulnerability. And it's a long cast. I'm sure you can solo this quest as other classes.

Varedis Must Be Stopped

Larissa Sunstrike wants you to go to the ruins of Karabor and slay Alandien, Theras, Netharel and Varedis. Use the Book of Fel Names when Varedis uses Metamorphosis to weaken him. Return to Larissa Sunstrike with the Book of Fel Names after completing this task.

Completing quests for the Scryers will cause your Aldor reputation to decrease.

Description

Of course we must destroy this book, but not before we use it to destroy Varedis.

If we're to shut down this academy of Illidan imitators, we'll have to deal not just with Varedis but also the three night elf masters that assist him: Alandien, Theras and Netharel.

Gather a suitable force and return to the Ruins of Karabor. Follow Altruis's instructions for defeating Varedis. Hopefully his plan will work - otherwise... it'll have been a pleasure working with you.
