The Auchenai Crypts are on the west side of Auchindoun. It's a short instance that takes about 2hrs to complete at a normal pace with pauses for drinking and all that.
It's not hard and pretty intuitive although there are some tricks to it:
Elites spawn non-elite undeads that can be shackled by priests. Most of their damage is shadow damage and all kinds of shadow spells such as Mind Blast, Mind Flay that deal quite a lot of damage.
The spawned mobs are either melee/ranged/casters. The Posessors are the worst kind, they will posess a party member until he is at 50% or less (meaning start hitting him remorseless), when he will regain his lost HP and break the spell.I think it strikes the person first on aggro list as I've (tank) been mind controlled through most fights against Auchenai Soulpriests (they are the ones that spawn them)
Whenever you think you're safe, there will be something in the shadows. Phasing Clerics, Phasing Soldiers, Phasing Sorcerers or Phasing Stalkers. They can be killed solo if you died and had to run back inside but obviously, there's a catch.
Shirrak the Dead Watcher(
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=18371
) is the first boss you meet. He's on top of some stairs and should remain there when you engage him. The bridge before him has Raging Souls which explode and knockback if you're near. You don't want to be anywhere near these nor do you want to die pushed off the bridge.
Tank him right where he is and let the rest of the party stay spread out between them and far away from him as he does Inhibit Magic, working like a Curse of Tongues which stacks. Your heals and spells will have their cast time increased up to 10 seconds if you're too near.
He has a Carnivorous Bite, a wound dot that ticks for up to 1000, will tick whenever he pulls players towards him.
His Focus Fire is a sort of meteorite that comes with a special emote, ZG-style : "Shirrak sets his eyes on ... " and you know it will hit you, decimating your HP almost. It's fire damage hence it can be mitigated by fire res gear or pots/totems/auras. Generally use heals over time and shield up and you should be fine.
The rooms before Exarch Maladaar require a priest. Packs of up to 6 Raging and Angered Skeletons need crowd control of any sort : shackling, traps, novas, offtanking if all else fails. They do about 500dps, 450 on average and have 18,000HP
The last room with skeletons is a simple AOE matter while the tank handles the elite warlock mobs. If you're lucky, two people can AoE them as they go down slooowly and have quite some HP that can bring mages to oom status.
The boss, Exarch Maladaar (
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=18373
)
is a rather easy fight. Your warrior is supposed to tank him. His abilities include creating a duplicate of a character, called 'Dark Side'. It will deal a LOT of damage, over 2000 when he does so and your clone is a lot weaker than you are but it has to be killed fast. I've noticed mine going around unarmed but priest clones do a mind flay and aoe fear, mages do fireballs/frostbolts and druids moonfire.
At 20% he spawns an Avatar of the Martyred. Your Exarch should be at 15% or so, moment when you have to kill him first and then pick up the Avatar that does 1600-ish mortal strikes. Cloth wearers can go through serious pains, involving death too.The avatar is low on HP, 30,000 while the boss has 81,000.
And that's it, you're done!

This can be very difficult or very easy, depending on the intelligence level of your group. It took me 4 groups to get past the first mob. You have to be VERY coordinated in the pulls. You definitely need many forms of CC, I'd recommend a priest, mage, rogue, pally, and hunter.
This way you can shackle undead, poly morph one, ice trap one, sap one, and keep up the shadow resist aura all the time. Each group will need to be done like this cause the smallest group you will pull is like 6. The first boss is a lot harder than the 2nd boss, but if your healer understands to use instant cast spells its not too bad. Just dps him fast as possible he goes down quickly.
For the second boss he calls a lot of adds. So just have two of your dps classes on his adds and the rest pummeling the boss, no real tricks needed here.

For my first time in this instance I had an ideal group, though none of us had set foot in there before. Warrior, Druid, Mage, Rogue, and Priest (myself). The pulls are fairly obvious but the Monks cannot be sapped or polymorphed. Due to adds all of the these elites spawn I would highly recommend an off tank or probably a good hunter to insure the survivability of your priest/clothies throughout the instance. Phased (invisible) mobs here and there are non elite and can be taken out by a melee while your casters drink. There are two adamantite chests in this instance. If locked it requires 350 lockpicking to open.
Healing vs. Shirrak: I found it impossible to avoid the debuff's full effect due to his ability to reel me in from the corners I was running to as I was shielding/renewing the warrior and rogue. I would have been able to get more healing off during the Weakened Soul cooldown if I hadn't wasted time running back and forth. Some of us were hit by focus fire once or twice that could have been avoided but with Druid + Priest HoTs we were successful with the rogue and warrior surviving our first attempt.
The room before Exarch: Two or three pulls of 5-6 elite skeletons were the biggest challenge in the instance. Single target DPS'ed them taking the shackle last. My shadowfiend saved us on the last pull in here. The most mana intensive trash pull I've ever experienced. Very exciting!
Exarch's room: The groups of non-elite skeletons will pull seperately. One or two of them may not have a warlock in them. Nothing a Frost Nova > Cone of Cold > Blizzard & some Holy Novas can't handle. Let the tank pull.
Healing vs. Exarch: His aggro table was wild, disorienting my tank constantly and charging random party members on occasion. Keeping the adds off clothies is priority to taking him down but at 20% the group should all out DPS. My druid off tanked the Avatar when he spawned, but the Avatar seemed to have a similarly wild aggro table. Very mana intensive if solo healing.

Exarch Maladaar is without any doubt the toughest boss of the two in the Crypts. Last night we wiped five times with a group of
2xWarlock, lvl70
1xHoly priest, lvl67 (me)
1x Holy Pally, lvl68
1xWarrior tank, lvl70
Later priest was changed to a 70 holy priest and 70 hunter (me again) took the lvl67's place. Two wipes and no boss kill, probably of utter frustration.
Now, what did we do wrong? Prior this evening I had been here probably ten times with various PuGs and no problem at all. As many above have stated, the key is apart from focus and committment, a good group build. Our first group build had too many clothies, which simply caused the wipes. No off-tank to take care of the little clones. Here, level does not matter apparently, but class does. Summing up: do not have too many cloth classes!
A good group build would be:
- Tank: warrior/druid
- Priest/Paladin for healing
- Paladin/Shaman/druid for off-healing and off-tanking
- Shaman/Warlock for dps and clone-pickup
-Hunter/second warrior/pally for dps/off-tanking
Also as stated above, kill little clones while tank tanks boss, and keep them away from healer. When big clone is summoned, off-tank and focus DPS on boss. After main boss is down, kill big clone. Loot and be jolly.
Oh, another good adivce, if you have a hunter in the party, you might be unlucky to have a hunter clone on your back. Me as a hunter, was trapped "in my own" ice-traps four times during the fight and could hardly not DPS at all. Beware of this ^^

Seems to be a huge healer bias as far as gear goes here so if you are a healer (or just need to stack up your healing gear) you will definitely want to run this a few times to try and get Collar of Command, Slippers of Serenity & Ironstaff of Regeneration. These drops will last you until 70 and if, like me, once you get to the mid 60's you just want to hurry up and level this is a big plus, they will no doubt be good enough to serve you in the normal difficulty lvl 70 dungeons.

Let me just say this is my favorite instance so far in outlands. It's hard, its tricky, and when you do it right you feel like uber leet sauce. It is a big step up from the 5-mans in Outlands that you have done so far.
We used wowhead and wowwiki last night on our first run and it helped tremedously. Full clear the first time, about 2hrs and the second run we finished in 1hr 20mins, and that was with at least two wipes.
Group was a 65 Prot War, 65 Combat Rogue, 67 BM Hunter, 66 Destro Lock and a 66 Holy Priest.
There are some posts on here claiming that the non-elite skeleton room is "impossible" without a mage. Thats simply not true...we managed well enough and I am sure that almost any makeup of classes can handle this room just fine.
Anyways, I didnt see very much on here about specific information for Hunters, so I thought I would add my two cents.
First off, the drops are excellent for you. I would highly recomend rolling on the
Mok'Nathal Head piece
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=27414
the Ring of the Exarchs
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=27413
and the Fetish of the Fallen, although it depends on your play style how much health is gonna help you. Be willing to defer this drop to a melee class if they are present and want to role.
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=27416
Okay, so my suggestions:
Make a macro that is simply
/target phant
/petattack
Everytime a mob pack is pulled and those undead get summoned, spam that macro. If a Phantom Possessor is spawned, the above macro will target it and send in the pet. Then you can simply assist your pet (you do have that keybound right? ;) and burn that bad mob down.
It is very helpful to keep arcane shot ready to go; dont try and steady shot or aimed shot the Phantom Possessors, it takes to long. Use instants.
After you kill the first boss, you will have to clear some tight pulls of skeletons, one pull being 6 elite mobs (!). Have your chain trapping down tight and your role in these pulls is pretty simple: watch the healer, keep your mob chain traped and DPS the rest. Standard fare, but be ready to have your pet off-tank an elite if things get sour.
I recomend turning off growl and keybinding it -- that way you can use it like an intimation, as far as threat goes (for your MM and SRV hunters). Basically, have growl ready to go if your healer pulls hate.
Next is the undead skeltons room...there are four packs, three of which have an elite with over 28k health. He's almost like a mini-boss in the sense that if his Drain Life is not intrupted, you will not be able to kill him. That goes for you, mr. over-zealous hunter!
If you pet is dead and/or you dont have intimidation, you will not be able to interupt the drain life spell...silencing shot may work, I havn't tried but if you have, please post and let us know! In the case that you dont get the drail life spell intrupeted, you will die.
As for the non elite skeltons, use explosive trap and have your MT pull them on top of it. Put your pet on defensive and have it go nuts. Pop beast-within and then stand back and pick-um off. Its pretty strait forward.
We happened to have a suicidal lock in our group who did a power word: shield/hellfire AOE that, whilest effective, also cause him to die on every pull. It made for some excellent entertainment...i think I have a movie of it somewhere...
Anyways the last boss. Pretty strait foward. Kill the adds, DPS the boss.
When the avatar is summoned, you can try to kite it while the rest of the part burns down the main boss. I tried this twice and died both times...the avatar is immune to traps and intimidation and he runs faster than you (but not faster than you in cheeta). If you are gonna try and kite him, then you have to really watch your range. Start too close and you are dead, start too far away and you lose DPS becaues you cant hit the main boss.
He three shotted me and I was buffed with over 8k health.
Do the right thing, and sacrafice your body for the greater cause! *try* to kite and dont wory to much if you die...your party should be able to burn down the boss and then wipe on the avatar, then rez and then you can all take him down together...
...thats what we did at least! (^.^;)
Have fun, this place is a blast!

If you are an herbalist, it would be a good idea to run the instance with a skill of 340 or more, because you will find a reasonable amount of
Ancient Lichen
inside.

It's been really hard for me to get a group for this instance on Mannoroth. I just want it for the Greatmother line/EXP. Why does everyone think this instance sucks???

reg isnt that bad in this instance you just have to pace yourself. my group was mostly 64-65 range, with a 64 war tank, me on my 64 rogue, a holy priest lvl 63 maybe 64, and a 66 enhance shammy, first boss was easy i died from ticks about 10 sec after we downed the boss but then war left the party. so i jumped on my newly reached 70 druid with probably 4 greens, welfare epic bg shoulders, ursols claw, and clefthoof set (nothing special by any means) and we 4 manned the rest of the instance with no cc save priest shakling one undead on the pulls in the last room. only trick to instance is dps wait til you see the tank actually land first shot on main target and save actually using skills or really dpsing until he has a chance to get 2-3 swipes (druid), 2-3 thunderstomps (war) or that consecrate down so heals doesnt worry about pulling aggro cause the tank had to focus on main target to keep dps from pulling too fast.
no wipes with the 4 of us either, and only 30 sec if that for mana breaks every 2 pulls since i had to go to work and really didnt have time to pace ourselves. so a smart group should have no trouble with 5 manning

Phantasmal Possessors
- These casters can mind control one of the group members. The mind control will not end when the possessor dies however, you must drop the player to 50% health to remove the mind control, at that time they will be healed to full heath and returned to the players control.

Successfully duo'ed normal mode as a 70 feral druid (S1 geared) and a 70 retri pally (in quest greens and blues). The only real challenge was the last boss, where you do take quite some damage and need to keep up nuking and still find time to heal. We wiped once, where we wasted the paladin's Lay on Hands, then tried again with Lay on Hands on cooldown and managed just fine.
The second time, we let the feral druid tank both the boss and the adds when they spawned, since the paladin took a lot of damage from them (after all he wasn't very well geared). Try to save your cooldowns for when the avatar spawns at low health, because you really don't want to stay in that phase for long, as his mortal strike stings.
Since the new patch I think that this instance in normal mode should be okay to do duo as long as you have a tank that can take a bit of a beating (mostly for last boss, the rest isn't that much of a problem: just mind the occasional mind control) and a healer. The healer doesn't have to be healing specced or geared though. If well geared, you might do it with a dedicated tank and enough dps power to nuke before the need to heal arrives. But I haven't tried that so it's just pure speculation.
Note that the avatar didn't despawn for us when the boss died.

I'm a mage and we took this quite easily with a group of 3 paladins (one in each spec) and a boomkin. We AoEed the trash to death and didn't wipe once. It was one of the fastest runs I've ever done.
Edit: because I spell bad.

I tried soloing this Heroic as a lv 80 Hunter with pretty good gear (Epics lv 200-219, Heroics, 10/25 Naxx, 1 piece of Ulduar)
I tried my Survival spec since that's how I roll for most dungeons, but the pet was getting plowed down super-fast by any pull over 2 mobs, and agro is hard to manage with crit-happy Survival. So I switched to BM and spec'd the bear for maximum tankage. This put him at 12k health and 22k armor, 15% magic resist, +50% healing. Mend pet ticking for ~1650 plus Silverback and Sprit Bond both adding 380 ticks.
Elite mobs were hitting the pet for 1k melee and 900 magic, the non-elite mobs that spawn were doing about 500 melee. I'm not sure if there is a way to keep the non-elites from spawning, but as fast as I could burn them down, packs of mobs still got too big to keep up with pet healing. When the pet dies, Melee-Huntard doesn't last long.
I'm sure with patience and spamming Feign Death, I could have avoided most packs of mobs, made it to the bosses, and burnt them down easy doing 3kdps, but I'm not a pro at soloing, so anyone have tips?
-edited for typo

I think it's also worth mentioning that these instances use the music originally found in Diablo 2 ^^
