He starts the quest line to get the key to the Halls of Ascension (aka UBRS). This involves getting an Unadorned Seal of Ascension off of random LBRS mobs, getting the three gemstones from War Master Voone, Highlord Omokk, and Overlord Wyrmthalak (random drops, not always guaranteed a gem), and having Emberstrife, a guardian of Onyxia in Dustwallow Marsh breathe on the Unforged Seal of Ascension through mind control. I'm going to try to describe where Vaelan is, since people seem to have a hard time finding him.

A rogue can solo this without aggro'ing anything.

Enter the instance.

Work your way past the first sets of guards at the top of the ramp and deal with the patrol. On your left will be the UBRS door. On your right will be a broken bridge over a pit where you can fall down to a lower section. Most groups making their way through LBRS take this path to bypass a few groups of mobs that you would have to fight if you took the ramp that leads "below" the UBRS door.

So, once you've dropped down, you have to handle a patrol and then a group of 3 orcs and a dog master with his two best friends.

Crowd control or stealth here makes life a lot easier.

Once you're past these mobs, you go through a small hallway that opens onto a large platform. Again, you'll face 2 groups: One dog master and his pets and a group of 3 orcs.

Here, you can pull the dog master and his pets without the other group of 3 orcs noticing.

Once you're past this group, there is no need to kill anything else if your only objective is to reach Vaelan.

Just past the area where you pulled the dog master group, you'll see that some rock is making a climbable hill on the left side. Groups often use this to get around a group of 3 or 4 orcs that are just ahead.

This rocky hill is actually the path to Vaelan. Climb it and then turn around when you've reched the wall and top of the rocky hill. You'll see a platform with a lone orc raider on it. Walk close, and the orc will mind probe you, and then reveal itself to be Vaelan once you are not deemed a threat.

As of this posting, Vaelan will not talk to you about his quest unless you are carrying an Unadorned Seal of Ascension. This means even when you go to turn in your Forged Seal of Ascension, after visiting Emberstrife in Dustwallow Marsh, you will still need to present a second Unadorned Seal in order to receive your UBRS key.

I did just solo this as a level 60 mage. (No killings involved)

I just entered the instance. Walked up as close as possible with out getting agro from the first mobs.

I then used an invisibility potion and made a run for it.

I did make it as far as doing the drop and passing the first Scarshield Worgs.
But then the potion ran out and I did get agro from the 2 man patrol. I then tried to make a run for it and could pass all the way to Vaelan without getting any new agro, just hug the wall on your right side when passing the next Scarshield Worgs.

When I came up to Vaelan, I still had agro from the 2 man patrol but when he mind controlled me I lost the agro and could get the quest. (1.8 patch)

I'm a 60 priest, and at least as of 1.9.. I was not able to use invis to get there.

After dropping off the ledge across from the UBRS door, I mind smoothed the patrol and all the mobs.. then popped a potion, and started running along the wall.

The dogs detected immediately.. tried to make the run, even did a big group fear.. but was dead before I could make it.. even with two shields spawned.

oh well.

Just solo'd my way to him. Easy for a Lock. Just enter instance, put up a soulstone, and bring out VW. I equiped Mark of Resolution and the nifty stopwatch. Got as close to the first mob without getting aggro. Sacced VW for shield and hit the stopwatch then ran like a little girl. Made it to the path up to Vaelan and got stuck on wall. VW shield wore off then all the mobs i aggrod killed me. waited for them to leave then used SS. Done. Locks RULE!

did today with no pet easy.
just ran, after i was away from their spawns points agro range feighn death.
after talking with him i forgot the cooldown on my heartstone, so went and got killed spirit healer, and of to emberstrife

It's easy for a warlock. Get in the instance and set your soulstone. Go up the first ramp so you're looking at the first room/mobs and get ready to hightail it!

1: Run through the first room and up the right-hand ramp (up left-hand ramp leads to UBRS). Turn right at the top of the ramp and jump off the ledge.

2: Once you land there is a chasm on the right, a passage behind you and a passage slightly in front of you on your left (it's curvy), and mobs in front of you. As soon as you hit the ground, run for the left passage. You need to get out of the agro range of the original position of the mobs in front of you before they kill you.

3:Die in the middle of the curvy passage.

4:Wait until the patrol moves past you and into the room you just left. SS rez and go to the end of the passage you're in (should be the opposite of the direction the patrol just went). You'll be facing orc/wolf mobs in front of you, and to your right across a gap will be ogre mobs.

5:Hug the left wall. The Orc/wolves will agro just as you try to pass them. As they start to chase you, move foreward still hugging the left wall, and go up the pile of rubble. If you stick as far left as you can, you won't draw agro from the mobs near the pile of rubble.

6:Once you get to the top of the pile of rubble, you have to turn almost all the way back around to get on Vaelan's platform. I'm not sure if you'll simply have lost agro from the orc/wolves by now, or if Vael's mind probe causes them to deagro, but they stop chasing you as soon as you get on the platform.

Anyway, that's it. It's way harder to describe than to do. Remeber, the Eye of Kilrog is your friend. :D (Wow, that was long.)

Post above with 3 invis potions is perfect. A little more detail:

-buy 3 invis potions (not lesser invis)
-enter instance and wait at doorway. One guy walks from the left wall to the right wall. Also a patrol will walk counterclockwise over the ramp and down.
-Wait until the patrol is right in front of you on the FLOOR - not on top of the ramp directly ahead. They will be heading to the left. Also wait for the one guy to be on the left.
-Drink potion and head straight in then veer right up the ramp.
-At the top of the ramp turn right and go to edge. Dont jump down here yet. Wait 10 minutes for potion to cooldown.
-Looking down over the edge you will see 3 mobs straight ahead and an orc w/ 2 dogs to the right of them. But you have to time the patrol walking.
-Time so that when the patrol is right under you,drink potion and jump down to left and hug wall down the short ramp and proceed through the archway on the left. Hurry because the patrol turns around right under the ldge...
-Proceed through the hallway to the end and as you exit the other end turn immediately right out of the archway and go to the edge of the platform in the corner.
-Wait again for the potion cooldown to expire.
-The same patrol comes all the way to the end of the hallway and the arch you just came through.
-Wait till they head back and run back to the archway and the wall to the left of it. Hug the wall and as it bends left, drink the third potion to avoid aggro.
-The wall will end so turn left and keep going up an incline to the very corner at the top and turn left. You will see one mob on a ledge.
-As you approach, he mind probes you and transforms into friendly Vaelan.

He will tell you the story of Nefarian and that you need to find the seal of ascension. Its a wasted trip...you will not get the quest without the seal so you should get it first to pick up the quest.

All the instructions and details are awsome. I JUST finished getting to the quest guy. Just an FYI though, you CAN use lesser invisibility potions. They worked fine for me (lvl 60 Shaman). GL everyone!

I just did it without any invis pots like so:

If you time it right you can blink past all the mobs in the first room and jump down to the lower level without any aggro. Then wait for the pat to come up the ramp, use mana shield, and run past everything. Use frost nova to keep everything back for a while. Keep running around the wall where it's dark, popping a health pot if you need to. Make sure you keep mana shield up as well. You might get stuck with webs just as you start to come around the top and back towards vaelan so use escape artist if you're a gnome or you should be able to blink again. Once you're close enough to vealan he will probe your thoughts and you'll lose all aggro. If you're feeling brave enough, med up and jump down and run back out. Frost nova when there's sufficient mobs on you and blink as soon as possible. Just don't do like I did and die after jumping off the ledge outside the instance.

OK, this is what I did as a 60 Priest, soloing the task of getting to Vaelan.

First, go into your Video Options, and set the Gamma as high as it will go - this way, you will be able to see better in the "dark" of the "rubble incline," on your last way up to Vaelan's platform. This REALLY made the difference for me.

I used three invis potions; they are needed, even if u have level 6 Fade, which is worthless, AFAICT. Follow the directions in the post above titled "Anyone can solo" -- with the following changes: First, the "hallway" is not straight; it turns left, then right, forming a short "jog" - you end up exiting the hallway thru an arch, going the same direction you were going when u entered it (East).

At the end of the hallway, instead of turning right and waiting, I turned left and waited in the platform corner, using my Shadowmeld. If you don't have Shadowmeld, then when u exit the hallway, turn right and wait in the opposite corner of the platform, (as in the above directions) until the invis potion cools down (10 min).

Then when you're ready to go, assuming you stopped where I did (left of the hallway exit, in the corner) pop another invis potion and head East along the wall, toward the dogs and mob. Stay LEFT, and as the wall ends, turn left - there is a small "platform" you must go around on its right side, then keep heading up the ramp (North). (Dogs may be chasing you now - they did NOT chase me) and when u get to the top of the ramp, turn around to your LEFT and step up onto Vaelan's platform. (Vaelan is at the far end, opposite corner)

At this point, when you are on Vaelan's platform, the aggro is supposedly dispelled, and you can speak to Vaelan.

I hope this helps 60 Priests solo this little adventure.

ONE MORE THING: I was disappointed that all I could do was TALK to Vaelan: NO Seal was given, only the instruction to "find one amongst the wretch in the lower portion of this citadel that has attained an Unadorned Seal of Ascension," and return it to Vaelan!

Very disappointing, that after all this, that's all I was able to do. :-(

The above posts work, one thing I'd suggest however is taking a mixture of lesser invis and normal invis potions as they are on separate cooldown timers, so you dont have to wait 10 minutes after each step, only after 2 steps..

I was able to get to Vaelan with only one lesser invis pot as a mage.

When I entered the instance, I got as close as possible to the mob without drawing aggro (I believe I waited for the guy to walk to the right side of the room), blinked my way across, avoided the pat and jumped down. This is the only part where you need the lesser invis pot. I waited for the pat to come around and when they passed by me (going in the opposite direction I want to go in), I popped the pot and bypassed the group of mobs and into the next room.

Now, I bought two pots, but I didn't want wait on the 10 min timer, so I go as close as I could (hugging the wall) and used blink again. No aggro drawn. Got to Vaelan with a blink, a pot, and a blink again without drawing any aggro.

This is patch 1.11.

If you don't want to use potions or they don't work for you, you can take a friend and duo it. Have your friend run ahead of you and agro all the mobs between you and Vaelan, then that person can jump off the ledge to the right after you exit the tunnel. You follow a few feet behind them, remaining out of combat if at all possible, and run up to Vaelan unscathed. Once your friend gets to the ledge, the mobs will reset and both of you should be alive and none the poorer for potions.

After entering the instance I checked for the patrol to be out of the way - then Mind Soothed the 2 mobs on the right. Ran in the middle (a little closer to the MS'ed guys) and took the right ledge up and a quick right to the ruined bridge. I could then stand right on the edge and monitor both the patrol behind me and the one below without aggro.

When the lower patrol had walked away from me and entered the tunnel, I MS'ed the humanoids, jumped down and hugged the left wall. Unfortunately I met the patrol in the tunnel - but I shielded, ran up to the caster with melee in tow and Feared. Continued to run - when out of the tunnel I clinged to the left wall and didn't even have to MS the beastmaster to get past.

I cont'd my run up to Vael and strangely enough the orcs didn't follow. So I handed in my Unforged Seal and got the reward. I then tried to equip the ring - but couldn't since I was in combat. But had no problem HS out.

Mission Accomplished.

its easily sneakable as a lock using use 1 VW sac and a ss, my problem was finding the path.

Its almost invisible and i'd walked up it without realising, just a case of walking into wall until you
find path.

I have soloed this using stealth as a level 60 druid.
Withouth the increased stealth talent, so druids and rogues can just do a fast stealth run for Vaelan.
I didnt take me more than 5 min.
Other clases can use the invisibility potions or just do a normal LBRS run with a group until you get to Vaelan.

60 Mage, 30fire/21ice, blue gear

Ran this solo today, only died once before I figured it out.

Blink past the mobs in the first room, head to the right and drop down the ledge. (you might have to practice this part, see how far you can walk into the instance before the mobs aggro, then blink at that point)

After you drop down, mana shield once and run past the guards. Nova to slow em down. Don't blink yet. Don't mana shield again yet, since you'll need your mana for blink.

After you run through the doorway, keep heading straight (towards the rope bridge.) There's another set of guards, so coldsnap+nova or blastwave to slow this set down too. Around here one of them will usually root you with the hooked net, so save blink to get out of it. After you've blinked, you can use mana shield again, as well as your mana gem, RotA, etc.

Your goal is to run up the rocky part of the mountain to your left (it's before the bridge). There's a platform up at the top (you might have to rotate the camera to see it)

You just have to stay alive until you make it onto the platform, as you'll lose all aggro as soon as you make it to Vael.

Helps to clear the two guards on the right with Mind Control. Mind Control the closest one and attack one on the other side, the goal is to kill the MC'd guard and you need atleast 2 guards to kill a 3rd in time. As soon is it dies or MC breaks, zone out. Repeat for 2nd guard. You can then Mind Soothe the midle guard here and wait for patrol pair to pass by. As soon as they pass by you can run up the right stairs and stand at the edge of the ledge without drawing agro.

You can then start mind soothing the three guards near the next passage, and the pair of patrol guards. (in continuos rotation is easiest so you don't have to worry about it wearing off early). As soon as the patrol passes under the ledge your standing on jump and run through the passage. (doesn't hurt to shield as your running for safety to allow weakend soul to wear off for a second shield on the next part.

This will bring you too the last obsticle, which is two dogs and handler. (PS Vaelan is the orc on the ledge just above this wall hanging at this point) Mind soothe the handler(not sure if it helps since the dogs will agro), and hug the left wall as you run past. After you make the left turn along the wall you will have to go around a bit of boulder so vear slightly right, but then turn left up the slope here. If you get netted keep shielding/healing, and wait until both dogs and handler are in fear range before using fear. This gives you plenty of time to make it.

No need to kill any mob.

Enter instance, pass the 1st room and jump down to the right as usual (if u are a lock or hunter better dismiss pet). W8 for the pat and then run in. As soon as u are at the large room hug the wall to the left and go up! Go close to him so that the orc turns to Vaelan. Very easy.

No kills involved to find him at 70!

You can easily get to this NPC at level 70 and probably 67+ without any aggro or killing and no stealth.

Enter BRS, there is a drop off to the right if you go up the stairs. Jump down... go thru the passage on the left avoiding patrol and hug the wall.

You'll come into another room, stay left. The floor slants and you can climb this to avoid the guards. Really, go to the top of the slope and turn around. You'll see an orc kneeling by himself at the ledge.

That's the guy you want to approach

All you need to do is get an Unadorned Seal of Acension off a mob. This will let you get the quest,... etc. After you forge it in Duskmellow Marsh. You have to get another seal off another mob to turn the quest in.

Solo'd as level 65 priest. Just mind-soothed the pats and got to him without any agro. Also, I only had 1 unadorned seal of ascension. They must have fixed the issue where you needed 2.

I am a 70 druid tank, no problems whatsoever with the quest. However once I tried to hand it in tool mcgee (Vaelan) wouldn;t let me hand it in. In order to hand it in you must pick up another unadorned seal of ascension (No idea why, but you have to )

He's standing on a ledge alone disguised as a Scarshield Infiltrator(the only one of them in the entire instance I believe). Approach him and he'll shapeshift and talk to you.

This hasn't yet been described well, so here goes.

Enter the BRS instance, kill mobs in the first room so you can go *right*. It doesn't matter if you use the drop or go directly below, you end up in the same place.

Now you have a slope upwards to your right (you're facing south), and more mobs ahead. Kill these, and the patrol that comes from the tunnel ahead/left, and go through that tunnlel (eastwards, with a wiggle).

Now you're where you can hug right and do a couple of drops to be at the left/right choice for Mother Smolderweb or the way to the troll area.

That's what you don't do, instead you kill the two groups of mobs in front of you. Now look up and left, you should see a lone 'Scareshield Infiltrator', this is actually Vaelan in disguise. Now to get to him....

You'll probably have to kill the next set of mobs just on the slope ahead, so do that. Now look LEFT and go into the dark and up the slope there, and hook around to jump up to where Vaelan is. He'll lose his disguise as you approach.

I got to him with a 60 mage without dieing. Trick is to avoid the first guards that is by using blink then just move as fast as you can onwards, because you will agro, blink, mana shield and frost nova is the trick. When you get inside the open room (Hordemar city) just follow the left wall and go up the slope, when you jump to his level the mobs will stop following you.

I think that Vaelan is Vaelastrasz in human form. In case you dont know, Vaelastrasz appears during the Rend encounter in UBRS if you have the key given by Vaelan, AND he is the second fight in BWL, because he lost to Nefarion in a fight, and is under the Black Broodlord's control. Little bit of lore for you.

When you enter Hordermar City area of the instance, you'll see him up above. Go around the corner to the left and there's a slope up to him.
