im currently at 24k armor unbuffed in bear form and i dont have many kara epics, mainly badges and rep gear, so i can say that 130 armor isnt a big loss, the dodge is ncie tho, since dodge is a big factor for bear druids. we dont get block and parry so dodge and armor is our friend. this is a sexy weapon and a great upgrade from Earthwarden

i was lucky enough to get this on our first night in SSC.
its fantastic, but i have one (minor) beef.... the loss of defense vs. earthwarden
its particularly annoying at a time when most druids would be (or already should have) replacing the clefthoof set with tier 4 pieces and lost treads/longboots.
thats losing a lot of defense all at once, almost necessitating that you use peripheral (neck, cape, wrist, belt, both rings, possibly one/both trinkets) for defense or resilience items.
you can work around it and achieve what i just mentioned... heroic badge rewards, kara rep ring, kara tank drops, mag head ring etc.... but you might find yourself making tough choices between the apparent trend of better items with less def vs. worse items with more def
another option is to use resilience more... the new pvp bracers, possibly belt.... timelapse shard is also nice here.
personally my goal has been to avoid having to use one of my trinket slots on an all defense item (like Dabiri's, Figurine, Hydross trinket etc.) because theres much better options imo.
this became a rant. the short version: it kinda bites that the great end game druid tank gear seems to leave out defense/resilience more and more... forcing us to compete with prot warriors and prot pallies for defense accessories that in all honesty benefit them way more than us.

edit: /agree with Brachamul about the agility... not only would it be more threat for tanking, but would make this even more viable as a DPS/hybrid staff. I use it in cat form because i've never had the Stranglestaff drop and its better than the Dragonstaff, nor have i ever amassed the arena points for Gladiator's. Agility instead of dodge would give it more AP/crit than Stranglestaff making it an effective upgrade if youre willing to drop the hit. anyone else find it lame that you have to go to Hyjal to get an upgrade from that Kara staff?

Considering the current change to drop attunement from SSC, how well geared would the raid have to be in order to clear some of the trash for a chance to get this weapon?

Here are some numbers to digest for those who want more than just words. Enjoy :)
Wildfury Greatstaff:
Armor gained (w/ Thick Hide) 500*5*1.1 = 2750
Health gained (w/ HotW) 70*10*1.25*1.2 = 1050
+2.64% chance to dodge (50/18.93)
+731 Attack Power
Earthwarden:
Armor gained (w/ Thick Hide) 500*5*1.1 = 2750
Health gained (w/ HotW) 39*10*1.25*1.2 = 585
+27 defense rating = 27/2.37 = 11.39 defense skill. This leads to...
Increases the chance of being missed by an attack by 0.44%
Increases the chance to Dodge an attack by 0.44%
Increases the chance to Parry an attack by 0.44%
Increases the chance to Block an attack by 0.44%
+24 feral combat skill rating = 24/3.9 = 6.15 feral combat skill. So, 6*0.1 = +0.60% extra crit chance against mobs above your level.
+556 Attack Power
Summary:
No extra armor value gained
+465 health with Wildfury
+175 AP with Wildfury
+2.2% chance to dodge with Wildfury
a loss of the extra 11 defense (chance to parry, dodge and being missed by an attack decreased by 0.44%) with Wildfury
a loss of 6.15 feral combat skill with Wildfury
a loss of +0.60% crit against mobs above your level

This is getting a little buff in the current PTR
from
731 Feral AP, 500 Armor, +70 Stamina, +50 Dodge (ilevel 128)
to
773 Feral AP, 500 Armor, +75 Stamina, +54 Dodge (ilevel 134)
Making the pillar of ferocity even more useless as it is.
Has been implemented now, I'll let it stay here so people can see how it used to be.

Now if they would drop the dodge, and split that stat budget up between agi and defense, we would really have something here. This is obviously a druid tanking weapon, so why not spend its stat budget with that in mind? It is disappointing to see obvious mistakes made (or worse, blatant disregard) for druid gear itemization.
I wont even start on the Pillar of Ferocity.

Anyone else notice that the drop list has it dropping from Galak Windchasers (level 24-25 mobs) 4 times? What could cause that type of anomaly with the data? I wonder if people are using the Wowhead client on private servers and skewing data.

This staff is the best staff for survivability, the stats on this would make most feral druids drool. However, the thing that makes me cringe at this weapon is not the lack of defense but the lack of expertise.
Picture tanking a boss and two of your attacks are parried and immediately followed are a couple crushing blows. You can't dodge a crushing blow and the stam increase you get from this weapon won't be enough to keep you alive from some of the hard hitting bosses out there.
Keep in mind I'm not rocking T6, there aren't alot of leather tanking pieces out there with the very much needed expertise rating. I tried OTing Kara before i got the Earthwarden and I felt embarassed i couldn't hold aggro because i was still using Braxxis Staff of Slumber. When I got Earthwarden and the rep. based neck piece from the Shattered Sun. It has made all the difference in my TPS.
This staff is incredible when you have other gear to make up for the loss in defense and expertise that you get from Earthwarden. Some poeple may want to stroke their ego when they see they're health and dodge rating jump several percentage points; not me. I'm more concerned about doing ALL the things a tank is supposed to do. Making it easy to heal you and holding aggro.
If your still wearing T4 I would hold off until you get a decent amount of expertise before wearing this weapon.

This staff is truly an infuriating item. For an insanely long time I have wanted it, and it never drops. This gets 10 times more annoying when it's not even a proper upgrade, as it's only a boss tanking item to me, and even then, at times, I'd still only use Earthwarden. But I am surprised at the lack luster drop rate on this item. I hear constantly about how much it drops for some guilds, and then others, barely ever see it at all. Nice to see Blizz keeps some consistancy in the game. -.-

Druids get NO benefit from weapon dps. Druids ONLY get attack power, and that comes from Agi (1 in cat), Str (2.4 in cat), and Feral Attack Power (@#$). In bear we don't even get AP from Agi.
A feral claw (the built-in cat weapon) is a 55dps weapon. That means the 654 AP on this weapon is adding 654/14 = 47 dps to our claw, making our claw (when used with this staff) a 103 dps weapon. Since by the time any druid will get this weapon other classes will be getting their 110 and 120 dps weapons, this weapon is not even CLOSE to being imbalanced. We will be doing less damage than everyone else at that time due to an inferior weapon.

actually, got changed on the test server from what the changes were originally going to be... now has 500 AC/70 stam/50 dodge rating/731 AP... HUGE improvement over the current stats!

to the person who was ranting about not using claw once u have mangle, pay closer attention to what ppl write. if u RE read the above poster and really think about it im absolutely SURE that EVETUALLY you will realise that when he said claw he was refering to the white dmg attack a druid does in cat form. I base this on the fact he was comparing it as a weapon of 1 speed. now if u stop and think (yes i know its hard but stick with it) you'll realise that the claw you were talking .... ahem ...... ranting about was in fact the ABILITY Claw, which as an instant ability has a global cooldown of 1.5 seconds. Now im fairly sure most ppl posting about this weapon are druids and understand already that if you are feral and have mangle (before you try and rant about the IF you have mangle, think about those poor poor feral lowbies who are not yet up to that talent) then it is far superior to claw in all forms. Now lets take this yet 1 more step. IF most of the ppl reading this post are druids with at the very least a 30 second attention span, and realise the difference between feral claws and the ability claw, then they are probably rolling on the floor laughing very very hard at the !@#$%^ ranting about abilities instead of weapons in a weapon thread. Now if you managed to read this wall of text i hope it amused u in some small way as im absolutely certain that the person i am refering to probably won't make it past the 3rd line. /bow

This is THE BEST tanking weapon currently in the game for druids. It provides the most direct mitigation - Far greater then Earthwarden. However if you upgrade from earthwarden, and suddenly become crittable, you might wanna stay with earthwarden till you get better nec/rins/trinkets/Enchants to keep you above uncrittable.

I'm rather confused, can anyone help me?
I'm a lvl 66 Feral Druid and am currently looking at the different lvl 70 weapon options for tanking and dpsing. I'm pretty sure that Terestian's Stranglestaff is the best dps weapon for druids, but is this or Pillar of Ferocity better for tanking?
People are saying that the dodge makes up for everything, but it is quite a big drop in %^& and Stam, and there is no Strength on this weapon, there is also a small drop in Armor, which at that level doesn't make much of a difference.
So, could anyone confirm that this is better, and maybe explain why the dodge makes so much of a difference?
