This is definitely the bulwark of the ancient kings. This is so good. But the stuff to make it take it are rare I think. I cant wait until I'm 70 and blacksmithing up to 375 so i can make it and then wear it. This is so good. and i hope this doesn't cost a lot to get the plans.

This item is godly, great for tanking and dps not very many items that have a use for both alot of warriors are stuck with having 2 sets of armor one for tanking one for dps which doubles the cost of the repair bill.

Nether Vortex are raid drop items. and they drop only one at a time.
For the prereq item, Bulwark of Kings, it requires 10 Primal Nether, which has a 20% drop from the end of the lvl 70 instances, or a 100% drop from the end of the Lvl 70 instances on heroic.

Its not going to be easy, but it'll be worth it.

I have to ask actually how good this will be for tanking with the lack of +defense. The armor is amazing and so is the stamina, I don't argue that. Nor am I saying this isn't a nice piece of armor.

But since it requires raid items to make, I have to ask if this is something I would want to wear as a raid tank when I can get raid pieces with far more +defense.

My real concern is whether the Use: ability shares it's cooldown with Last Stand. Anyone know? If not, that kicks ass. If so, then it's lame and I'm not sure I'm going to sink the mats into it after all.

The cooldown on the "use" portion is 30 minutes. Do note that this buff stacks with Last Stand and Life Giving Gem.

an ideal dps plate piece, but also a good "stopgap".

doesn't mean that your MT should justify it as the reason to get all the vortex drops.

Is this piece viable for PvE? It does have a lot of stamina and a nice use, but it has no stamina or avoidance. I picked up armorsmithing in hopes of using it for tanking (like it was pre-BC when a couple dark iron pieces were BoP) and instead I get to pick between either weapons for dps or armor for pvp (btw as a prot paladin neither of those are desirable options).

Side note: Season 2 warrior chest has very similar stats and will take a lot less effort to get.

Personally I just made this for tanking (Nightbane has not yet dropped his chest, and my guild does not yet have the properly geared Lock's for Mag).

I find that with the amount of armor and stam on this, plus the fact that I am well beyond the 490 criteria (probably about 520 now) even wearing this, that it is unlikely that I will even pickup the T5 Chest.

Maybe if I have everything else and it drops when I have DKP to spare.

How does this factor in with tanking? My own blacksmither is a paladin, and while he's not up to the level yet, I have been looking at gear choices for when he DOES get there.

Quite frankly I'm somewhat lost.

Something people arn't putting out either is the usefulness of this breastplate as a five man / Heroic / Karazhan tank. After having done the hardcore raiding circle I've finally started leveling up a new warrior to play with a small pool of friends.

I intend to go Armorsmith and while, sure, this breastplate dosen't have a lot of tank points outside of a bonus Last Stand and high stamina, I'm not looking to stack T6 style avoidance, especially since in the content I plan on running a lot, that'll leave me rage starved. Plus having access to Nether Vortices via Badges now will allow me to make the top of the line model as soon as I have the means to get them.

Just my two cents, not everyone reads these comments to see how an item will stack up against Illidan.

i'm sorry but if you use this breastplate for tanking your a complete moron. congradulations on wasting around 3k gold for your new "tanking" chestpiece.

It's obvious this is a fury warrior chestpiece. big hit rating and big critical strike rating and strength should tell you that by now.

Chestplate of Stoicism (100 Badges in new 2.4 Loot, the chest from Nightbane or Tier 4/5/6 is definitely better

The reason I would think this is obvious is that a Tank needs to stay alive and the best way to do that is through mitigation and not some 1500 health increase, gruul hits harder than 1500.

There are some good posts about effective stamina and yes Armor is a big part
but you need your block value, Parry and Dodge a good warrior spams his shield block on a boss and the shield value increase on tanking pieces will out do the armor increase and of course dodge and parry is 0 Damage instead of a 2k+ hit which is definitely nice in staying alive.

As for Aggro The shield value from a tanking chest piece increases your shield slam and that is giant aggro compared to the +hit.

This is a better tanking chest than any blue that I have seen socket it with +Dodge Gems to help you out.

So if you are in the boat of not having a chest piece from Nightbane or better this will get you through until then, it did for me. But swap it when you can.

Once you get your tanking chest re socket it with DPS Gems and you have a good dps chest for anything.

humm, everytime i see this item on a database, comments are talking about this item for tanks. This item can in fact be useful on some fights u need hit rating, and you dont want to sacrifice HP and Armor, lowering your avoidance a bit, BUT you should be focused on DPS when talking about this chest.

Pre-Blacktemple, and if you are unable to kill kaelthas on TK and unable to get season3 chest form arena points this is the best dps chest in game.

54.47 dps

So its onpair with T5.

Note: The magister's terrace heroic chest is inferior to this one.

just as Zerothelegend & Drbasic pointed out. this chest does have multiple uses. & until you get your hands on a proper tanking chest with tanking stats on it (dodge,parry,block rating / value..etc). this chest is viable for tanking.

stats on one side. the use itself is a life saver. for those who had the pleasure of obtaining the Lifegiving Gem from the old days. knows the value of the use on this impressive chest piece.

& as stats for dps. very few chests can replace this outside of Black Temple, Mount Hyjal. & even those are a hard comparison when counting in the use function (150 strength, stacked with every possible CD, will help out when you are trying to down that boss. on that last attempt of the night. on that last 5%~10%...).

& as for pvp. you cant take it seriously as a good pvp item (as mentioned above by Hopper. the use on it cant be applied in arenas..). but for those people who like to play Battle Grounds for a little fun or for the daily pvp quest. its quite nice to have. given again on the use & the nice stats on it.

so a question comes to the mind of alot people. "should i bother going through all that trouble of crafting this?"

yes, absolutely. i'm a tank in a BT,MH farming guild & when im not tanking. im using this mighty chest. ^.^

This chestpiece is very good for pvp too.
My warrior has full S1 gears plus this.

This one is as good as S3 chestpiece except for its lack of resilience.
Collecting arena gears can take very long time so it is very nice alternative for those who just started collecting S3 gears.

This chest piece actually has higher hit rating and crit rate than S3.
Only downside of this piece is that it is ugly..

In terms of effective health vs the Panzer'Thar:

1450 armor + 51 sta + 39 BV
vs
1825 armor + 56 sta

I'll take the armor.

Not to mention the threat this chest will help put out is pretty hefty, way overshadowing the threat from 39 BV... The only reason you shouldn't use this over nightbanes chest is if you are not defense capped. End of argument.

In my opinion, going Armorsmithing is now of more worth for PvE warrior since Dragonstrike lost its potential to easy-attainable badge fist weapons.

As a warrior that is def capped, with a good amount of avoidance, I find this is a nice chest to swap in for trash and heroics.
Shield slam is great for generating single target agro, but if you have to spam a bunch of devastates on a 4-5 pull, rage starvation can lead to dead healer.

The plate chest for armorsmiths, it requires the Bulwark of Kings (hard as hell to make, already) and 5x Nether Vortex (very rare BoP reagent) to make. The stage 3 weapons require 20x nether vortex to create for weapon smiths. =\

This has no dodge, no defense, no resilience, no shield block and no parry. I feel sad that this is what armor smithing permits. After all the trouble I went through I would expect some choice in what single piece of armor I can get - I would choose something useful for tanking.

I just got my second Bulwark built, and this baby is next. Just need 3 more Vortex. This is the highest armor rating item in the game so far at 1753, this is the uber chest piece. Dont gem it until the gem crafters are max leveled. Not gonna want to make this piece more than once, trust me, hard enough making the Bulwark of the Kings.

any one that had the patients to learn armoursmithing like me must definately have the patients to finally be rewarded for it by getting the mats for this beast

and as for gold ebayers tbc saw to them just from the shear amount of gold u can grind and quest in tbc is riddiculous.

I'm not sure if this is worth losing the T5 or even T4 set bonus for, its awsome and all, but is it better than the set? looks dont matter because you can wear a tabard over it if you wanna match your set, soo...I'm not sure, btw, I'm a 10/41/10 protection paladin, and getting the T4/T5 tanking sets wont be a problem for me, just not sure if its worth it, any suggestions or comments?

t4/5 set bonuses are 2/4 peices, you can ditch the chest peice on them for this and still keep the set bonuses

its preferable to use 100x mote of mana to get the 10 primal mana. but 100 motes of anything(X) can make 10 primal(X) wich can be converted into the primal mana

-shame that bulwark hasnt got defence stats etc
but then that may be overkill

but yes i do suck at this game so i may be completely wrong if i am please correct me where possible

The Nether Vortexes are obtained from "Tier 5" instances such as Serpentshrine Cavern and The Eye. I'm not sure how exactly you get them, but I would assume uncommon drops off bosses much like the Primal Nethers from heroic 5 mans.

It's been supposed that it can also drop off T5 raid dungeon trash.

This is certainly an amazing item, but I'm a little puzzled about how small of an upgrade it is over the Bulwark of Kings. Compared to the Bulwark of Kings you get an extra

+243 armor
+5 strength
+2 stamina
+2 hit rating
+5 crit rating

This is really only a small upgrade, and doesn't seem justify it being a 20 levels higher epic item (Bulwark of ancient kings is level 140 epic, Bulwark of kings is level 120 epic).
I expected that the Bulwark of Ancient Kings would have (140/120) ~ 17% better stats. Clearly this isn't the case. Anybody have any idea why?

What many people are forgetting, is that when Wrath of the Lich king comes out, Armorsmithing will be taken to a whole new level, which in turn, makes it a very useful skill.

Well i am a Paladin, and when looking at my choices i went Armorsmith over Weaponsmith for this reason.

Yes i can make my Lionheart Executioner or my Stormhearald but in the end i will just replace it with Hammer of the Naaru...reason being if i go Ret i need the Hammer of the Naaru, if i go Prot i need another weapon then what i can gain from this for stat purposes.

Being Armorsmith however getting this bulwark of the ancient kings will allow me to not only DPS if i insert right gems and right enchant but allow me to tank very well providing right gems and enchants.

Think of this...you gain the ability of the warriors Last Stand almost here. And you gain a lot of Crit and Hit rating.

I just recently made Breastplate of Kings, getting Bulwark of Kings is easy if you have a guild that will work with you.

Bulwark of the Ancient Kings a bit harder but in theory easy to get if you run the DKP system and your guild is going places.

Basically to even get this you have to sorta meet invisible requirements.
-Take up an oath of poverty to become armorsmith.
-Becoming very very patient
-Knowing where and when to farm
-Having some pocket money
-Sanity

Im telling you because when i started this armorsmith i had no other main, it was my only main and it was long...very long. But in the end it was well worth it, as soon as i got this the Breastplate i swear ppl that saw it in my guild just got jealous, of course i can upgrade it further and there are some better peices out there but um how the heck am i going to down Black Temple or Hyjal? Nonetheless for a PvE piece and PvP to an extent this final piece...is godly and for all Paladins that are Ret or Prot would love this piece greatly and i suggest by my personal opinion to go after it rather then weaponsmith stuff.

Gotta love this chest. Good for everyone. Arms warrior who raids? Great, slap some extra crit in those yellow gem slots, and the hit rating built in is always nice on a level ? boss. Fury warrior, this is just imba, and of course depending on what your current stat balance is you can gem this to adjust, whether it be more +hit rating or more +strength. Prot warriors will love the use of this on boss fights, and this has tons of stamina, and shield slams are crittable!

Just realized something here.

If your armorsmith yes you forsake those wonderful Weaponsmith stuff but lets say your a two handed user and you got something like Khorium Champion it makes up for the loss of the weaponsmith stuff and puts itself almost at par with it, so you have a godly chestpiece w/Godly Weapon and your set.

I seem to realize more and more each day why the plans for such are rare as heck, because they are very useful. Either to sell for gold or to use because you are not weaponsmith. I got the plans for Khorium Champion actually very cheap so im gunning for my gold from the weapon then get the weapon again for myself, farming the mats for ME IS EASY so again simple stuff not a problem. This more then makes up for the weaponsmith stuff in my opinion for gold farming and to gain a weapon of great power.

However more so this is what makes Armorsmith ALL the more better ^_^

Okay... they like really messed up with this item.

Not to say that it isn't bad. For all applications, this is an epic item, and it plays that role really well. I'm sorry but 3 slots, over 50 on two stats and an AMAZING effect, basically adding 150 stamina and 150 strength, is pretty amazing, and the effect makes this piece even better in PvP (if you do both).

Now, the crapped up part about this is that it isn't one of the best items. Panz'thar, Heartshatter Breastplate, Krakken-Heart Breastplate, along with the tier pieces and gladiator pieces are much better an actually easier to get than this item. As a matter of fact the items required to make this item are IN THE INSTANCES WHERE YOU CAN GET THOSE DROPS! Why in HELL would I want to freaking go and get the mats and make this item if those items drop? Why would anybody?

This is were blizzard freaking messed up. They should have made this better.

Made this item WAY better, make it like a super-epic. Give it like 4 slots or something, give it some more stats, make it really good.

But of course, what IS a super-epic? Oh yeah, A FREAKING LEGENDARY ITEM! Add an extra step to this, say, you have to kill the last boss in the Black Temple to get a drop you need to add this, maybe TWO drops, at like a 1% drop rate, and then make this legendary with-

1825 Armor (2125)
55 Strength
60 Stamina
3 slots
Improve hit rating by 1.8%
Improve crit rating by 2.1%

And even the same spell EFFECT!

At least...

But of course I'm not a blizzard worker so I'm going to just have to leave it as it is... *sigh* :(

Ok, I just got my second Vortex from SSC trash and upgraded this piece...

To everyone that thinks it needs a buff, i say yea, it would be nice, but you know what? Get #@$@ed! It's still an amazing piece and as previously stated, unless you do Arena a lot, this is not THAT difficult to obtain.

I play on a low pop server, so it took me months to get it, and I'm happy that it's not that ez to grab. This IS an epic Item. Throw in a Sovereign Tanzanite, Deadly Fire Opal and an Inscribed Noble Topaz. (the first 2 gems u can get from Shattered Halls and Arc respectively (heroic)) and slap a +6 to all stats chant on there and you're rockin one sexy chest piece.

With those Gems/chant you've got:
59 strength
68 stamina
6 agility
25 hit rating
50 crit rating

umm.....VERY NICE!

You can throw in an etched fire opal for extra hit rating instead of one of the other 2 orange gems.

(note, BT gems not included. if you're gemming it with BT quality gems, you probably can upgrade this piece as well)

I recently crafted this piece after months of beating my head on the keys for picking armorsmithing, and it has completely changed my mind. The stats are incredible yes, its versatile for each class (warrior myself), and you can go dps or tank mode and it's still effective. The crit helps with threat also. Think about this, Last Stand gives you 30% of your health back, now with commanding shout, and this wonderful use (1500 health), when u pop Last Stand you just gained damn near 50% of your base health with one click of a panic macro. Silence on Gruul, healer goes down, lucky hit on prince, so many times this piece has saved my ass, and getting into SSC and Eye now you can't beat it. Plus the 150 str shoots your block up a good bit which is nice mitigation buff. All in all from actual use, i'm not dropping this baby till BT. Get ur T5 bonus off the rest of the set, u only need 4. Happy tanking!
