The only reason people like this helm is because of the color. Resilience rating is garbage to any tank, the defense rating is too low.

It has no additional stats like hit, dodge, parry or block, no agility or strength. just more armor.. considering +300 armor is like a fraction of a percentage of in mitigation to what you already have.

Ok, a few disagreements here.

3 helmets have been thrown into the mix from the original discussion.

First off, i think we can all agree that this one is great, and that with 1300 armour, +47stam, +def and +resiliance with 3 sockets its a lovely helmet.

The point i was making was that not all servers have this yet, i know no-one on my own server has it sadly, and none of my friends servers do either. Apart from being EPIC it's also very rare.

That leaves us with Felsteel Helm and the Greathelm of the Unbreakable. This is an argument that's been done to death >>> https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=27520#M0z <<<

Here's the comparison though, that maybe i'm getting wrong:

If we put 3 * +12 stams into both this and the felsteel helmet, then we're looking at +83 stam vs. 63 stam. though we lose the "socket bonus" on each.

Now if we assume that *most* people attempt to keep socket bonuses (hell, it's a free stat), how would that play out? +12 stam on Blue Gem, +4 def +6 stam on yellow, and +4 str +6 stam.

Now, once Defence gets to 490 (or above) resiliance becomes neglegant in PvE. so as a stat it's useless (which is why i've not included it). Clearly this is a lovely helmet, and once Gem'd up it's a good upgrade to the Felsteel, but given the odd mix of Gems i dont think it's a *must have* item for every MT and OT once it becomes availible on your server. Infact, if it wasn't for the unbelievably cheap mats (for something of this quality), I wouldn't be that fussed about getting one.

That aside, what this helmet DOES offer, that i dont think many people have picked up on, is that it's AMAZINGLY versatile for PvE and PvP once you've replaced it with something specifically for tanking.

If you ignore the +def, you'd swear it was good for PvP or outdoor PvE, with all 3 gem colours giving Damage options, not just aimed at a pureply +stam based playstyle; coupled with the resiliance.

As an arms warrior, or even a prot hybrid warrior who does BGs or outdoor PvP then this could be a very versatile choice.

why does this helm look so bad?

ive had this helm pretty much ever since i hit 70, and every time I run instances or raids everyone makes fun of my "gay" helmet and my tiny shoulder armour (being an orc but thats another rant in itself)
no doubt that its a great helm, the best probably pre-gruul, but what was blizzard thinking when then drew up the graphics? it confirms my belief that blizzard hates prot warriors, this helm, combined with the Coldarra shield makes me look like a...ergh...pally

Let's make a bill since this helm is pretty easy to craft as miner/blacksmith (you should have the & the yet)...

I got the recipe yesterday and crafted the helm which replaces my previous Felsteel Helm. I socketed it with 3 Solid Stars and it gives me a decent boost in stamina and armor. I lose some defense, but since I still sit way over 500 I can live with that. The socket bonus is neglectable as a warrior.

At 2.4, nethers are BOE and the cost of this item is under 500g, if you have the gold it is a easy item to get and it not bad for tank or even some pvp to start. Is it a GREAT item? No, but it is a hell of a up from most greens and blues and likely worth the 500g if you have it to spare.

this helm is good if you are starting to tank kara. with primal nethers no longer BOP you can have other people craft this for you. I did some searching aroung the AH for awhile and found all the mats to be around 450g ( im from misha) if you look around for the cheepst stuff. overall for the price paid and the stats you get from this, i would have to say its a great helm. (the looks still suck!!)

Honestly Felsteel Helm with 3 +12 stam gems in them are really good.

The resilience is only useless if you make it useless. I've used it to bleed my defense into more avoidance, stamina and armor. So i'm under 490 Defense and still uncritable.

That being said the only resilience i have is through items good on their own merits without it, ie) this helm and the gladiator shield.

Have a friend who can craft on Shadow Council Alliance.

At 490 defense u are immune to crits from any pve mob or boss in game. couse all mobs got a 5% crit chance against their own lvl, a raid boss counts as lvl 73. so resilence is 100% useless after u have 490 defense if u are tanking PVE. not pvp. a rogue with 30% crit will ofc still crit u, but netherspite won't.

You sayd: "and block doesn't stop crit, if u though so", kind of rude remark by u there, but i didn't mention that in my last post either. I was not discussing block.

I have the helm myself. Easy to farm mats considering primal vendor (primal earth) is so cheap and motes drop out of pretty much every vein (im a 375 miner). The only hard mat to get is the primal mana. All in all it took me 2 or 3 days of farming to get helm. paid 200g for the nether though. But if you socket it right the helm is really nice. I used two +12 stam gems and a +4 def and +6 stam gem....77 stam just from the helm alone. the resilience is alright. but not great for tanking. but does reduce crit chance which is nice but still. But in my opinion if your trying to get a pre kara helm and it seems that no other pre kara helms will drop (like me...) then i suggest try and get this helm....

plus...it makes you look like Voltron :)

490 defense is exactly 5.60% reduction. do some research before posting lol.

And there is no small chance, i've been raiding gruul's and kara and done all heroics. i had 0% crits versus my tank gear the last 35 days. so there is no "small chance".

But if any boss has a boosted crit chance(wich i've never seen or heard off, or tanked), then yes, then resilence is usefull after 490(against that boss).

But according to blizzard post on the wow-europe warrior forum, that does not exist :), but i guess ofc u know better... lol

since blood craze and enrage will proc from mitigated/negated crits, wouldnt resilience still reduce the damage of a negated crit? havent really tested it out, but it would stand to reason that resilience is still usefull to have even if you break that magic defense number :)

Looking for Crafter on Mannoroth (Alliance)

I feel that this helm is a major upgrade over Felsteel for a Paladin tank. The capability of adding 36 Stamina via gems to attain 83 Stamina does it for me. As a Paladin tank I must cope with my base stamina being significantly lower than a Warrior's, and getting to 490 Def is rather easy via quest rewards, other easily crafted items and regular Level 70, 5 Man instance drops.

In addition to the arguments above, working for maximum stamina increases the benefit of Ardent Defender, which on the Public Test Realm reads, "Now reduces damage taken by 6-30% when below 35% health."

8K health means that the damage reduction starts at 2800HP. Taking 2800 damage at 30% reduction = 3640 effective HP.

10K health means that the damage reduction starts at 3500HP. Taking 3500 damage at 30% reduction = 4550 effective HP.

12K health means the damage reduction starts at 4200HP. Taking 4200 damage at 30% reduction = 5460 effective HP.

These examples are purely theoretical, but they show that when Paladin tanks get to 35% HP their effective HP jumps, giving healers extra time to heal the tank to normal levels. Every point of healing done by potions, healers, and other effects while the pally stays under 35% is effectively increased by 30%. The only serious threat is being one-shotted for 5,000 damage when the Paladin is at 36% HP (Since you must be below 35% health to receive the damage reduction), creating even more reason to maximize Stamina after 490 defense.

The resilience is, as the previous posters argue, quite weak in PVE. In the end its close to having spirit on the damn thing. Despite this weakness I find that this helm is still one of the best pre-raiding Pally tanking helms.

It is true that you will not be crit on w/ 490+ Def. I cant remember the last time enraged popped while in my tank gear. Though it is pretty easy to obtain this, you cant neglect your other stats. Seriously, mobs and bosses will kill you with 490 Def. in about 3-4 hits for heroics&raid; dungions so mitigation is VERY important. I have around a 65% avoidance (block/dodge/parry)and me avoiding that dmg 65% of the time really cuts down on healing required, true it doesnt do anything against magic..but thats a whole different realm of tank gear. Your Block rating/Block Value is very important. Blizzard just reduced the parry rating for 1% parry chance to something like 19-24 rating (cant remember), and parry is very handy because the very "unknown" stat about parry is that it lowers the time till your next auto attack by 50%, and mitigates 100% dmg. Dodge is great and mitigates 100% dmg, but there is no rage generation added to it. When building tank gear, its not so much being a meathead AC/DEF/HP tank, that doesnt fly anymore, you must have more well rounded stats to do it right.

id say the other one, if you add a meta socket with +18 stam and 5% stun resist + a 12 stam blue socket you can get the same number of stam with the 6 stam bonus then the other sheild (without calculating the stam bonus alredy there on both helms) + the other bonus of the faceguard are better then the epic helm bonus

Not great unless you have a lot of money to spend on gems. Three Thick Lionseye would give you 70 def rating and 43 stamina with the KoT rune. That's pretty good, but you could also do the same with a Felsteel helm and get 80 def rating and 27 stamina, trading 160 hp for 10 def rating is a pretty good deal in my opinion, because once you hit 490 you can focus on getting that 12k hp you need for kara. If you traded out 1 lionseye gem for 1 Solid star of elune you would end up with the same def rating, and only a 4 stamina difference, Thats a lot of money to blow on 4 stamina and 82 armor.

common guys seriously...no one has commented on how ugly this helm looks, propably the ugliest purple helm in the game, does'nt go with anything too!If i had this helm i would have it on hidden permanently.Looks twice as bad on humans too.
