As of 1-26-07 Lagoon Eels no longer drop Motes of Mana, they now drop Motes of Water.
'Tis a pity.

Mana Wraiths near Area 52 have a pretty good drop rate compared to anything else I've farmed.

These tend to drop motes of mana pretty well. i was farming for about an hour and i got 3 primals (30motes) and another 5 motes. the only thing i suggest doing to save time is try to avoid the other earth elemental things that are around them. this can easily be done if u are lvl 70 and have ur flying mount.

The trick is to kill them fast (under 10sec seems to be about right). If you don't the mageslayers will use spellreflect and the mana seeker will use mana burn.
If you kill them fast enough as a caster they wont do anything! (they have about 5200hp each)
One hour = 70-100 motes for me (i need 6-10sec for one mob 0/21/40 wl)

I've been farming mana wraiths as a 66 destro lock with my felhunter as a pet. You can usually nuke him down to about 30% or so before he does his mana burn ability but a well timed silence/counterspell will do the trick on these guys.
Their drop rates on these motes is really streaky. I'll go 20 minutes w/o seeing one and then the next 20 getting 16 motes. But keep at it, these are very easy to kill.
I'll lvl up a bit more and start hitting the mageslayers next.

I farmed void monstrosity in netherstorm for 3 hours ended up with 80 motes very good drop rate and consistent. There weren't many people grinding this area either ,but the mobs are plentiful and spread out over a large area and 2 people could work this area and not have any real downtime. I also got some greens and a blue and a singing crystal axe :) which sold for a nice chuck of G's.

Warp Monstrosities on the edge of the land West of Stormspire tend to drop mote of mana at a fairly good rate. The only snag is that the mobs are quite densely packed in with some earth elemental types called Sundered Thunderers, have to keep double checking behind me, and kiting the warps around to avoid aggroing 2 mobs at once :)

If you're a skinner who needs Motes of Mana, a good mob to farm is the "Phase Hunter" in Netherstorm. They are skinnable and drop Mote of Mana at a reasonable rate.

I made a quick outline of where all the best places to farm motes are. Very useful if, like me, you are farming many of them for a recipe of some sort.
Layout:
(Zone) NPC name - Coordinates - % drop rate - link to page at Wohead
Mote of Air:
(Nagrand) Storming Wind-Ripper - 69.21 (Throne of Elements) - 33.9% -
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=22310
Mote of Fire:
(Nagrand) Raging Fire-Soul - 69.21 (Throne of Elements) - 34.1 -
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=22311
Mote of Water:
(Terokkar Forest) Crashing Wave-Spirit - 63.17 (North-Western Throne of Elements) - 33.7 -
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=22309
Mote of Earth:
(Blade's Edge Mountains) Sundered Rumbler - (Basically above and all below Area 52) - 18.8 -
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=18881
Mote of Mana:
(Netherstorm) Mana Wraith - 36.60 and 31.73 (Anywhere above Area 52 and more below. While you're at it, kill the Nether Rays as well, they have just as good of a chance to drop and are mostly in the same area) - 25.8 -
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=18864
Mote of Life:
(Zangarmarsh) I didn't find any specific place to farm for these because the zone is just rich with them. But I would suggest farming the Bogg/ Starving Bogg Lords and Fungal /Starving Fungal Giants because they are all very close. - The Spawning Glen (SW Zangarmarsh) and East of there is the Quagg Ridge - Very similar drop rates on all 4 mobs that I pointed out, 18.2 to 18.8 -
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=22575#00Rmz
Mote of Shadow:
By far the most commonly found mote. This is dropped in almost every zone and can be easily farmed anywhere. But there may be a few exceptional areas just because npcs that drop them are close together, non-elite, and easy to kill. Here's one spot in a few that are exceptional:
(Nagrand) Voidspawn - Again, no specific coords, but all around Oshu'Gun, the bigass crystal SW Nagrand. - 18.4 -

by FAR the easiest place to get these is in Wizard Row in Kirin'Var Village, SouthEast Netherstorm. Kill Mana Seekers and MageSlayers. I got 3 Primals in 20 minutes... WHY, oh, why, can't fires be this easy to get? Blizzard needs to make some changes, considering how NECESSARY Primal Fires are in just about everything...

As a mage i found the best place to farm Motes of Mana was from the Phase Hunters, just outside Eco-Dome Midrealm.
They're well spaced out and not immune to any spells.
Good respawn rate too.

I found that farming them at the south-east corner of shadowmoon valley has very good drop rates. The mobs there do minimal damage, and it is really rare to find another grinder. You need a flying mount to reach the summit though.

I've always stuck with this guy:
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=18879
The sheer volume, respawn rate, and ability to skin them makes them great. And they're stupidly easy to kill. But I think they hate casters. They have a mana burn or something. I usually farm them on my feral druid for my lock.
Quite frankly they're so easy to farm that I don't understand why primal mana is so expensive. Just laziness?

The warp monstrosities -
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=20516
- in northwestern Netherstorm are very good to farm for motes of mana. I just got 30 in less than an hour. The plus to these is they're not as popular as the other spots in Netherstorm. They also have a very good droprate. I went to farm two other spots in Netherstorm and it was a little crowded and then came to the monstrosities and was the only one there.
The only setback to the warp monstrosities is that they are a little densely packed and there are just as many rock elementals in the same spot as they are. However, if you are smart about it you won't have to fret. I only aggroed a rock elemental once, and I got a mote of earth out of it!

It all comes down to how many you kills in an hour you have. If you start tracking the kills per drop you will all see that the drop rate is 14% in Blades edge just like the top tells us. It takes me (resto Druid) 3 times the amount of hours to get the same drops as a Hunter because I kill less mobs per hour than the hunter does.

Phase Hunters are very good for farming, particularly if you are not geared up for the tougher mobs. Phase Hunters are located in less traveled areas to avoid ganks, they are easy to kill, respawn fast, and have a good drop rate. Other mobs show higher drop rates, but they are harder to kill so your motes/hour will not be as good. Phase Hunters FTW!

I have also heard that the drop rate of the motes varies with the time of day... So if you find a good time, don't forget when it was.

These dropped like crazy for me...like every other drop or every third, I'd get 1 or 2 motes at a time. I farmed for about an hour in Netherstorm and got 4 primals. I got them off pretty much everything that hangs out close to the edge of the area, north of Area 52: Mana Snappers, Phase Hunters and Nether Rays.

Nuke, DoT, Shield, and then wand them down. As soon as they start casting their mana drain, hit Fear.
If you have decent +dmg gear, then they should be about dead before they can cast mana drain again.

I've killed about 100 of these and had a 40% drop rate. As a shaman Immune to their devour mana:
"Mana Wraith's Devour Mana fails. Grounding Totem is immune." So the Grounding Totem never gets destroyed (except when it runs out of time) FTW. I did do some nether rays, save the earth shock when they drain mana, doesn't go to the grounding totem.
For everyone complaining, i've had good and bad days. I once killed 125 Air guys and only had 2 motes drop, 2. On the other hand, i killed 85 and had 66 drop. Just gotta keep at it. At least it's motes now and not whole essences. Before you could go farming for a short session and not get one essence. Now at least you can get 2-5 motes, and feel like you accomplished something.

Grounding totem costs 129 mana (for me atleast)
Earth Shock (Rank 1) costs 30 mana
That means I can do 4 Earth Shocks and save mana. The mobs does about 1 mana burn each fight, sometimes none at all.
The grounding totem lasts 45 seconds, in perfect condition I can kill possible 4 mobs in that time, most of the time 3 with running and killing, or even less.
If I kill 3 mobs its 90 mana vs 129 mana
If I manage to kill 4 mobs in 45 seconds, its 120 mana vs 129 mana
I might not save THAT much mana on it, but atleast Im not stuck to standing around on one place.
I know this is very general, and not thinking about all things that can happen... but I think ES rank 1 is more effective then Grounding Totem

The Mana Wraiths just outside of Area 52 drop them pretty frequently. I got 1-2 motes about every 5 kills. But then again, some days motes drop like crazy, and others they just don't drop at all.
But this was the best place I could find so far. Other enemies such as the Phase Hunters and Nether Rays drop motes of mana as well.

Exaggeration makes this tough.
'I can get 9 primals an hour'
That's a mote every 45 seconds, for an hour straight.
C'mon-- the drop rate isn't that high.

I used a wizard oil that lasts for 30 minutes and farmed the Mana Wraiths north of Area 52 until it ran out.
I came away with 31 motes, which I think is fantastic. This includes all the time I spent having mana breaks etc (and I had a fair few as the darn things tend to eat my mana), but I was lucky that I didn't see another soul there the whole time.
They tend to drop two or none...

Not really a problem farming these on a mage. They're arcane immune, so you cant CS their manaburn. On the other hand, you dont really need to as they die rather quickly.

As a skinner i found a great farming spot to be just a bit north east of Arklon ruins. The drop rate is probly a little lower than other spots mentioned but both the phase hunters and nether rays in that area are skinnable.(For some reason other varietys of phase hunters are unskinable) Also as a hunter i find them a bit easier to kill as neither are magic resistant to any of my shots. The mobs are quite concentrated in that area and PvP is minimal. Just an idea for you skinners out there.

I find the best place is the Phase Wyrms on the "Maintaining The Sunwell Portal" quest. They often drop 1 - 2 motes per kill. Most kills i've gone without a drop was 2 or 3 tops i think! Just got 2 primals and 2 extra motes in about 15 mins.

Best place I've found is Wizard Row in Kirin'Var Village, at the southeast edge of Netherstorm's southernmost island. The Mana Seekers and Mageslayers have a pretty decent drop rate, dropping 1-2 motes every few kills. It tends to be busy with farmers and questers but the respawns are pretty fast.
The Mana Seekers have mana burn, but if you kill them quickly they won't try to cast it. If you don't kill them fast enough you can interrupt it (shaman earth shock usually interrupts and does enough damage to kill them).
The Mageslayers are actually more annoying for me because, while they don't drain mana, they do have spell reflect. Also avoidable if you kill very fast, but you can't see or interrupt it like you can with mana burn. It really throws a wrench into killing sprees because if you do a lot of damage you can easily off yourself with a badly timed reflect.
Still, as an ele shaman killing one at a time as quickly as I can, I get about 50 motes an hour.
