We've found that it's great to toss a moonkin in a group of 4 mages for raiding, it increases their damage output-now to 5%.

The best thing about Moonkin form is you have the same armor contribution as a feral druid, and your attack power is also increased. The most helpful thing in the new "Before The Storm" Patch, will be Dreamstate. Which is a nearby talent for Moonkin Talent Tree's.

Another good thing about moonkin is it is excellent for pvp, I do much better in moonkin form in pvp than I do in feral form, I tend to be too slow and not reach my target before it's dead in feral form, with Moonkin I just bomb them and they fall over :)

I am known in my guild as "the moonkin crack" and I refer to the mages a s "my mages".

We have been in 20 mans and our mages go "umm please tell me we have enough healing so gg can moonkin"

Now that we can cast insects and innervate in moonkin form I am in high heaven. The 5% boost? Oh my LORD!! In moonkin I have 6k armor and a 18.63% crit chance.

I had the highest NR the other day and I tanked the Aymiss the HUnter boss in AQ20!! Moonkin tank FTW BABY!!

This form has gotten a huge dps buff. Moonfire spam has reached a new level and owns any person in sight. Treant ability is awesome as well, especially against hunters. the hunter may be able to trap one of them, but that's still 2 trees dpsing down while moonkin spams starfire!

Yeah, the damage on this form has definitely been improved, but I think the best thing about it is the 5% spell crit chance for all players in the group. This is great for raids if you put the healers into the group with the moonkin, or even the other offensive casters for some boosted DPS. The new mana recovery chance on hit when in moonkin form is nice, too, really helps in tight situations.

This form is also great to have with the mix of a feral druid in the group with Leader Of The Pack to help melee crits.

Moonkin form is fun and I love the way it looks, especially the dance. Not many druids go into balance for leveling, only really for raiding (from what I have seen), and they are missing out on some fun with casting.

Also, since the moonkin form was changed so that melee hits have a chance to gain mana back, that juggled with certain balance talents and Blessing of Wisdom really help to get away from the "oomkin" misconception that balance druids never have mana.

Overall, it is awesome to experiment with this form and talent tree, and I am very happy with the changes that Blizzard made.

The thing I like about this for raiding is that I can spam Starfire / Wrath and when I run out of mana, I just go and melee the boss. I don't draw agro because I do crap damage and our Tank is best on realm! BTW... Oomkin? I think not! I think... BOOMKIN!

Also, while in Moonkin form you count as a Humanoid (Unlike feral and Tree Of Life forms, where you count as either beast or elemental). You can still not mount up, however, with the exception of using bugs, glitches and costumes. :P

+5% spell crit for 4 more nukers or healers in a raid setting is not to be underestimated...not to mention the +3% melee hit chance for all melee attackers against targets affected by improved faerie fire talent.this,coupled with the new mana regeneration talents make balance druids not only acceptable as raid slots,but in some cases maybe invaluable...remember,we can always help heal if things get bad,AND we have an extra innervate to dump on somebody.

plus,the 400% armor increase,while wearing leather,and having some armor from MotW(especially improved),makes moonkins probably the thoughest offensive spellcasters a melee class has to face in PvP...esentially a "plate mage"...that can root and heal...and surprise ppl via cat prowl

One thing i have been noticing lately... and not only on moonkins (( although they are the ones with highest mobility mana-wise and situations )) is that druid nowadays (( yes i am an old school druid )) love their forms way too much.

I know i am generalizing, but i felt to give it a warning to those that check out this stuff so they can improve. A druid is meant as a hybrid. Sacrifices an end to boost another with specs but that doesnt mean other forms (( mainly NE/Tauren)) arent as usefull.

I met druids moonkins that say they wont heal nor tank. i know we got imba like hell guys.. but really.. cant we just help those priests a bit?. A small taunt in bear form to save the priest, or some off healin? doesnt hurt anyone.

All mentioned before was just because... forms were misused... anyways... Moonkins are the plated mage. Ya its a gattling gun spammer but... it is a dps buffer in raids and no.. its not always out of mana. Not even before the patches, just needed some mana management really. Moonkins can be the best support Spec there is. Resto are used a main healers so they dont count on support here. And ferals, they have the dps to care about. Although balance, increases the party´s spell dps as mentioned before.. (( aka fire mages and warlocks love it the most )) as it can innervate without much thought.. they can keep their mana up so they have a spare innervate unlike healing druids.

On the other hand, although their damage is in fact moderate to high, they can always pop out to heal as they have more mana than ferals usually.

On the pvp side.... as on that youtube movie.... heck.. 5 moonkins... its a suprise attack that almost noone expects and noone knows what to do, everyone can tank/stun/ moonfire gattling gun/ call trees. and stuff. on Battlegrounds they are kinda ignored sometimes till they land a couple starfire crits... but even when they are ganked they last enough for teammates to enter for the kill. (( well.. more against meleers not much against casters )).

But i was assuming the moonkins were geared before, in case they arent, they are ultimately the support of a group, giving a simple damage output with faery fire to help, and pop out for some healing. taking in accoun that moonkin shapeshift is cheaper than other forms.

So ya! in the end its Go GO moonkin!! *moonkin dance*

The melee effect restores about one third of your AP as mana (works out to about 125 mana for a level 70 druid with little or no gear that gives AP). Look for Elune's Grace in the combat log.

It seems to work like other procs (i.e. a given number of times per minute, giving slower weapons a higher percent chance per hit). It works on anything that can be hit in melee, so hitting critters while farming is an easy way to restore some mana.

We had a boomkin druid stand in a party with four pallies. This allowed pallies to have around 20% crit and bigger heals (buff filled in the other 5%). This meant bigger pally heals and pallies with limitless mana pools. At times we would also swap priests in to buff inspiration on the tank.

One boomkin is definitely a benefit to any raid if you want to buff your healing or your DPS.

Melee mana is so pointless, it does very little damage, and when you're attacking a mage and you go oom, why would you run up to them so you could beat them except for entertainment purposes? Change mana regen to spell cast or spell crit imo.

Blizard has been taking spells for each class off the talent tree so that each class can learn that spell. Hopefuly they will do something like that and we all could be a moonkin, or they might lets us learn the Force of Nature spell to! :)

I don't understand it.. why base the mana regen on attack power? Doesn't being a moonkin mean you're looking for spell stats primarily?
Anyone think it's intentional? Perhaps to keep moonkins from being too powerful :O

After recently arriving in the outlands, once again I decided to give Balance a try.

Personally I find Moonkin Form + the balance spells far more enjoyable than Feral but that might just be me after playing Feral for 50 odd levels.

Anyway heres the scoop, You get your armour increased by 400%, attack power increased by 150% and a 5% extra chance to strike a critical hit with spells (always useful in a party.) So its sorta like wearing plate/mail (depending on whether you wear cloth or leather) armour like in bear form but you have more damaging abilities at your disposal and can take quite a beating!

*Don't forgot you can melee enemies to get some mana returned too, this is pretty nice but you won't be melee'ing much im afraid.*

One thing that I haven't seen is that lil tid bit about the tauren Moonkin. and by that i mean the use of warstomp. anyone ever wonder if you would to use it would it drop you from moonkin? well i have your answer. it is one of the few amusing thing i have seen on my moonkin is it using warstomp. :) good stuff imo.

There's always confusion about Moonkin Form, so let's review:

-Moonkin Form considers the druid to be a humanoid, making you vulnerable to crowd control skills such as Sap, Seduce and Mind Control.
-Like all shapeshifts, you are immune to polymorph effects while in Moonkin Form and will be freed of any snare or root effects when shifting in or out of it.
-Unlike Bear and Cat forms, you use your equipped weapon for melee damage.
-Racial skills, such as War Stomp and Shadowmeld, can be used in Moonkin Form.
-Balance spells are any spell under the "Balance" tab in your spellbook. Casting any non-Balance spell will either give you an error or shift you out of Moonkin Form (depending on your settings).
-Remove Curse, while a Restoration spell, can be used in Moonkin Form.
-You can use potions, food items, "Use:" parts of gear, craft items and even your hearthstone while in Moonkin Form. You CANNOT mount or take taxis.
-Special "disguises" such as the Hallow's End costumes, Deviate Delight transformations and so forth will be removed when you shift into Moonkin Form.
-Your armor is increased by 400% of your equipped gear. This counts armor on your rings, weapons and trinkets. It does NOT count armor from enchants or item enhancement.
-Moonkin Aura is a 5% increase to the spell critical chance of any party (NOT raid) members within 40 yards of you. People can actually cancel the Moonkin Aura if they want to for whatever reason, but it'll come back if you shift out and back into Moonkin Form.

The only benefits of Moonkin Form is the spell crit aura, mana gain melee proc and increased armor. While these are excellent qualities, in many cases it'll be more useful to stay out of Moonkin Form so you have access to your healing spells. Don't fall into the trap of staying in Moonkin Form all the time!

I love PvP, and this is most likely my favorite class to PvP with. Roots and Nature's Grasp are great for keeping people standing still, or halting Flag runners, while I sit back and hit them with Starfire, Wrath, etc. All in all, an awesome spec for an awesome class. And yes, Moonkins have the best /dance emote in WoW.

It's nice that they're making the mana regen effect based on spell crits. Now we don't have to lower our DPS to get mana back (and people won't treat us like we're worse than n00bs for trying to use ALL of the abilities that Blizzard gave us....)

Moonkins are getting a massive buff in WotLK, as everyone is saying: Even better utility (Imp, Moonkin, E&M to a lesser extent, IFF), benefiting from some of their own talents now (IFF ^^)
and some nice improvements (No more melee for mana, 30% Threat reduction on Nature's Reach, OoC is finally useful for us, plus Master Shapeshifter is a good spend for leftover points).

EDIT: As of current Beta, ALL aura type effects are raid wide -
Shammy totems, Pally Auras, Tree Aura, DK Auras, Warlock Blood Pact, Moonkin Aura and LotP Aura

Now by my reckoning, if Blizz are making everyone of these raid wide, they will all need to be toned down, or the bosses and raids will be that difficult that they are all necessary

Yeah, but pally and shammy have several auras to choose from. If boomkin aura was raid-wide, there'd be no reason to have more then one. And since we're not the best DPS casters, that would make having more then one in your raid a waste of a spot.

You're forgetting the best, albeit situational, boomkin spell, Groundlord: Trees. Currently, they each to ~75 dps per tree, for 30 seconds. Unfettered, that's a ~6700 damage instant cast DoT spell for, what, 200 mana? Cool-down is being reduced to 2 min, as well. With that and new Brambles, wootness.

My concern is that they new talent tree is considerably less hybrid friendly. In the current layout, you can sacrifice a few of the more fluff talents and get spells like http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?spell=17108 or http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?spell=16864 with minimal loss of capability. In fact, you could 100% fill up an entire spec tree and still have a few points left over. The current beta tree does not allow for that. The new spell crit -> mana is nice; however I'm not sure that a 2% refund/crit is going to make up for the lack of http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?spell=17108 (especially since they changed it from a 100% rate to a xx% rate in the current beta) unless boomkins start seeing a major increase in spell crit rates in end-game gear. Granted, I'm guesstimating this with current average mana pools and spell costs, but 2% would only mostly refund a single Wrath spell. Many of our offensive spells are DoTs and debuffs that are not capable of criting, or cost noticeably more mana that you would get back from a 2% refund. The newer set-up is going to make spirit much less important to boomkins then it has been in the past, (Conversely, http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?spell=33956 is Intellect based, making a larger Intellect rating more important that trying for both Int and Spirit.) and spending the talent points for Intensity would require sacrificing serious Balance abilities, making a large base mp5 less beneficial. From that, the effectiveness of http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?spell=29166 will be slashed as well, leading us right back to the oom problem. This will certainly be less noticeable in the end-game gear (which will most likely have all three Int, Stam, Spirit benefits) but a fat lot of good that does lvls 20-79, or boomkins in raids that do not have the highest level gear.

...Dire Boomkin Form, please. :D

i've found this to be a highly acceptable lvl 80 balance spec. sure you can't get everything and have to sacrifice a few talents here and there like IFF but it gets you everything you want in the resto tree for raiding. http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?talent=0t0rdicsAdhVu0pZfMcub you could swap around a few points to get what you want here or there but i think this build looks pretty good.

As of 3.0, Hurricane can now crit, making it quite godly when in moonkin form because all the crits activate the mana regen buff. I just ran Heroic Sethekk Halls and was using this at the start of most pulls and for the big groups of owls.... With the owl groups I ended up with double to triple the mana cost of hurricane given back to me!

Moonkin now bring solid dps, but also:

+3% haste to EVERY member of the raid (Imp Moonkin Form)
+5% Crit (Moonkin Aura)
+13% dmg for all casters (Earth & Moon)
-3% damage to tank if neccesary (Insect Swarm)

Not mentioning FF or Imp FF as it is a large DPS decrease for the moonkin.
But IFF would bring +3% hit for casters

well, with the changes to bear and cat form, I can only pray that this is next in line, I love my druid, and always will, but the main reason I'm not balance is due to this HORRIBLE form.

The 2% mana restore is more potent than it seems at a first glimpse, with my 21.5k mana, 40% crit, 24% haste (talents included) I got a whopping ~700 mp5 from this talent alone.

From doing my normal rotation on a dummy for exactly two minutes I got 16,738 mana returned.

16,738 / 120 = ~ 140
140 x 5 = 700

Not too shabby.

(It might be worth noting that I did not get any lucky streak of crits during this period, my Wrath was at a 37.2% crit and my Starfire was at a 63.3% crit)

You could use a macro to mount up and prefix your mount command with a /cancelform.

/cast Swift Mistsaber; Moonkin Form

Actually the above macro will

mount a Swift Mistsaber when not mounted
dismount and switch into Moonkin form when mounted

Just replace Swift Mistsaber with your preferred mount.

Or you could use an Addon like GupPet.

As much as I love moonkin form I'd like to see my gear as a balance druid. There should be a minor glyph that allows you to enter moonkin form and get all the buffs that come with it, but appear as your normal form.

On the contrary I would love to stay in Moonkin form even when mounted.

Addition: I have just verified (on my worgen druid) that the Howto Moonkin Mount trick stills works in Cataclysm.

Go to Wetlands - The Lost Fleet
Engage in combat with one of the cursed sailors in the water and wait until you get cursed
Get back to dry land and out of combat
Switch to Moonkin Form and mount up
Wait until the curse wears off

It's crucial for the trick to work to not use any mount addon or macro that prefixes the mount command with a /cancelform.

As I have read in a number of different sites, moonkins need spirit for hitrating (provided they click the talent point, off coarse).

But I have the talent to max, which should mean that spirit=hit. However, my hitrating went up quite a bit when i experimented by reforging all spirit to hit - does anyone here want to help me solve this puzzle? 'Coz if spirit=hit, the hit should stay the same when exchanging spirit for hit. Is it a bug, am I missing something, or has the talent been changed?

Can someone explain to me the rational behind the Moonkin Form? As far as I'm aware there are no Moonkin in the various Druid organisations and there are no friendly moonkin organisations / tribes. Why do spell casting Druids shape shift into these creatures?

Also, is the shape shift totally necessary to the spec? I'd really like to make a caster Druid but I'm totally put off by the form. Any suggestions?

If you use a chair while in Moonkin form, ALL animations stop. You stand stock-still. It makes for some hilarious situations if you have a Mushroom Chair handy.

enter Moonkin Form increase Arcane and Nature damage by 10%, and increases Druid's Armor by 60%.
attacks done to Druid while in Moonkin Form have a 15% chance to trigger that:

increase damage by 10%
immune to pushback while casting Balance spells

activating Moonkin Form clear all movement impairing effects (i.e. root, movement slowing).
Moonkin Form is considered as Humanoid, and while in Moonkin Form Druid is immune to polymorph effects.
Moonkin Form also provide a 5% spell haste raid buff Moonkin Aura, which does NOT stack with:

Mind Quickening (provide by Shadowform)
Elemental Oath (provide by Elemental Shaman)
Energizing Spores (provide by Hunter Pet Sporebat)

Wild Charge replaces Wild Charge by enter Moonkin Form (NOT by choose Balance Specialization), and can be changed back by cancel Moonkin Form.
give Balance Druid Incarnation: Chosen of Elune, which can only be cast in Moonkin Form.
Glyph of Stampede allow Stampeding Roar to be cast without cancel Moonkin Form (or normal humanoid form).
Revive can NOT be cast without cancel Moonkin Form:

cause Moonkin Form free of cost.
Glyph of Stars change the look of Moonkin Form to an "astrally" humanoid form. allow others to see wtf Druid are wearing. it also change Druid's mount to look "astrally" when in Moonkin Form. "shadowy" mounts is not the full story!

A couple new animations have been added in MoP. I've noticed a new channeling animation, a new casting animation besides the Kamehameha/Hadoken stance, and also a stealth animation (no more epic moonkin waddle during Illidan's stealth in WoE D:)

i wish they would make thos transformation toys work better with this form so i can be in Moonkin Form but have something like Kalytha's Haunted Locket over it and not replace it

I really think that this model needs updating. Hasn't been updated since it was first introduced, but all of the other models have. It just looks so outdated.

Cat form icon - a raking, clawed paw. Okay. Bear form icon - big wide paw print. Okay. Travel form icon - a hoof print. Okay. Flight form icon - a bird silhouette. Yup.

I squinted at the icon for moonkin, knowing it had to incorporate it somehow. Came here to see the bigger version of the icon. Still stared at it for about 30 seconds before it clicked. Odd contrast with the colors/negative space.
