Certain hints in the Dragonflight alpha suggest some possible themes for the 2.5D animations for Dragonflight! We take a look.
WARNING: POSSIBLE DRAGONFLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD!
During the current version of the Dragonflight introductory quests on the alpha, players get a chance to speak to a dracthyr about various important moments from the past. Selecting each option shows that a cinematic is meant to play - though at the moment we only get a blank screen. However, clues about these cinematics can be discovered from their descriptions: Dawn of the Aspects, Neltharion's downfall, and the dracthyr's origins.
Dawn of the Aspects
Dawn of the Aspects is also the name of a
World of Warcraft novel by Richard A Knaak
. The novel tells the story of the time before the Dragon Aspects gained their Aspect powers, when they were still proto-drakes. The main antagonist of the novel is Galakrond, who we have already theorized
might make a return in Dragonflight
.
When Malygos, Alexstrazsa, Ysera, and Neltharion managed to defeat Galakrond, it impressed the Titan Keepers so much they decided to make the four proto-dragons Guardians of Azeroth, granting them their Aspect powers. We already know that, in Dragonflight, one of the motivations is for the Aspects to regain their powers - so revisiting the first time they gained them makes a lot of sense.
Neltharion's Downfall
Considering how this is named, we think this is most likely about Neltharion's descent into madness and transformation into Deathwing - rather than the death of Deathwing himself. As the Earth-Warder, Neltharion's duties left him vulnerable to the whispers of the Old Gods, who were buried deep within the earth. He descended into madness and turned on both is duties and his fellow Dragon Aspects, and his betrayal helped bring about a great deal of chaos and destruction - from Alexstrasza's enslavement by the Horde, to the Cataclysm that tore the world apart.
To have one of their own closest friends turn on them to this extent also deeply affected the other Aspects - in Shadowlands, we saw Ysera is still incredibly hurt and upset.
Dracthyr's Origins
This is a cinematic that we suspect also plays at the beginning of the Forbidden Reach storyline, the dracthyr starting zone. After awakening, new dracthyr witness a cinematic when they interact with their Scalecommander. It would make sense that cinematic tells their origins. The dracthyr were created by Neltharion, before he became corrupted by the old gods, and designed to be the perfect soliders. Evokers, in particular, were the most elite of these soldiers.
When the dracthyr reawake along with the rest of the Dragon Isles, they expect Neltharion to arrive with orders - and are confused by his absense. They're even more distraught when they hear rumors of Neltharion's death, with at least one dracthyr turning his back on his former allies.
