in the naruto anime universe. there were 2 characters that were very interesting to me.
There was the puppet master, sasori, who believed that real art was meant to last for eternity and the future generations can look back at it and appreciate it.
Then there was the young escentric deidara, who believed that art was a blast. he would create these small clay like figures that would fly seek their enemies and blow up. Art only lasting for a short while. Like a fire cracker.
So here we are, with 2 polar opposites, 2 extremes clashing to see whose art was better.
Sasori
Sasori’s Eternal Art
Sasori believed that art was something wonderful that remained forever. That was his sense of true beauty – eternity. This reflected in his nature as he made puppets out of humans & preserved them. Many litterateurs have reflected on eternal concept as something that just lasts long, but doesn’t fulfill the true meaning of eternity, for example – Ozymandias, a sonnet written by Percy Bysshe Shelley states that great achievements & successes don’t last forever as there is nothing that can outlive time. Even though his puppets remained for a long time, we have no evidence that they remained for eternity, but yes they were definitely the ones that lived at least longer than the human lifespan.
Sasori’s views are taken in high regard by people usually because leaving one’s artistic mark behind, even after death, has been seen as a very long lasting achievement. It’s like living even after death by leaving your works behind for the new generations to see. Yet it’s ironic, poor Sasori was one of the first ones to get killed off in Naruto Shippuden.
Sasori wanted to become art, that’s why he turned himself into a puppet. He believed he couldn’t be destroyed in anyway & would fulfill the true sense of art. His art also symbolized his loneliness, because he turned people he was close to in puppets so he could preserve them forever. However, he later became very detached with emotions to an extent he said he wouldn’t feel anything if his grandmother, Chiyo died.
Anyway, Sasori has always believed his art view to be superior to what Deidara holds & has never respected his view of art. He rather mocked him from time to time on having views that held art as transience.
Deidara
Deidara’s Ephemeral Art
Deidara had an extremely opposite view to that of Sasori’s, which consequentially led to their quite common artistic conflicts. Deidara loved art with all his heart & considered himself to be an artist. Of course, when a person is an artist, every single work of theirs has to be a model of art. That’s exactly the case with Deidara. He considers his every small creation or even move as art. His mouths on each hand knead his chakra with clay & so he is able to create clay sculptures with fine lines, which he calls his art. There’s not just that to his art, as his every clay work has sublime beauty which fades away in an instant leaving an explosion behind. Given the right vision, even explosions can be seen as art. Clouds are often taken to be the epitome of transient beauty. Same could be said for explosions as every pattern produced makes a different pattern of smoke.
Why Deidara’s views lose to Sasori’s is simple. Transient beauty, fading away in an instant is not remarkable as it won’t even remain for as long so as to get acknowledged by others. Again, ironically, Deidara lived much longer than Sasori did & was able to do much more than him.
Deidara was the kind of artist who searched for inspiration. He wanted to fight strong people so he could get more inspiration which was his reason to look up to different fights. He also liked to make people appreciate his art, especially strong ones, as he often remarked how he wanted to display his art.
The databook described him as ‘militant’ which suits his personality & art very well. He is impulsive, loud, and impatient just like his art is. Opposite to what Sasori did, Deidara respected Sasori as a fellow artist & his art views. But, he still held his views in higher regard to Sasori’s.
So, the question I leave you. How do YOU define art? Is 1 better than the other? If so, then why? What makes it better?
