Absolutly a $%^& show this Quest, by far the worst one i ever did.
I tried it with 4x of my Friends it never gave me more the 10% within the 5min. CD of the item itself.
The Orbs are not easy too catch until u activate Shadows in ur Graphic settings (most people have this off) so u can see the shadow animation of the Orb where it is landing.
All 4x of my Buddys catched one Orb and it takes me 2 Second Cast time to make one of the Orbs to a Stable Element (for the 5%) but when someone else catches the orb it disrupts the cast and the whole catch the Orb stuff goes 9-10 Sec. so absolutly not worth it doing it with more then 1 Friend at this point.

On top of that, i lost all my progress from doing it alone when i was at 70% after i used my Heartstone to get back to Valdrakken.
Suddenly i was at 0% ... the Time i lost made me mad but the GOLD u lost because of that made me raging because for every 5% u do solo u need to give 10x Awakend (Frost, Fire, Air, Earth) randomly one of those 4 and on my Server that was arround 3-4k for 10x of them soooo yeah.

Good Luck too all of you hang in there friends, hope for the future this Quest changes to a better side.

Not a great quest to do.
Slow, annoying, expensive.

So first off, the objective is to catch the orbs that pop out while you channel the quest item. You are able to move while channeling so no worries there. As a DK, I tried popping death advance during and nothing. Pre popped death advance, 50/50 chance the speed boost applies.

You chase the shadow on the ground, so make sure you're able to see shadows (change your graphics settings). Once you catch an orb, your extra action button shows up with a random Awakened element (Fire, Earth, Air, Frost). You press the extra action button and begin a slow cast. After you finish the cast, you press the EA button again and 5% is added to your 100% bar.

I did this solo, if I got lucky I could catch 2 at a time. I bought 100 of each awakened before coming out to do this because it takes 10 of a random Awakened to cast.

I stood at (55,33) in azure span which is a huge ice plain so I could see the shadows easily.
If you want to make it easy, give your party members a nice stack of each awakened to try and catch as many orbs as they can with you.

The quest item has a 5 min cd, so that's fun...

Edit: I attempted finding a small area with a roof overhead to cheese the orb shots into landing in one spot on top of me. No luck. They flew through the walls into the abyss and it was a waste of a quest item cast. Waiting another 5 min.

I found a pretty solid way to get 5% everytime... it doesn't make the quest any funnier but atleast I can just sit and watch streams while clicking buttons 3 times every 5 min.

In Dalaran(Legion broken isles) Go to the Dalaran Fountain, stand on top of the little pillar in the water use quest item, stand still and then click the action button 2x times.

Update 240104: The comments below saying there are not necessary or any benefit of standing in a special spot anymore, 5% seems to be guaranteed.

WARNING: After combining awakened materials, make sure you target the holder of Fyr'alath before clicking the action button, else it will try to give credit to the wrong person and may waste the materials.

What is going on with this quest really? Sometimes the button just goes away wasting your 5 min cd. Sometimes while you are casting it will change to another element and interrupt your cast and then disappear. I will have finished it by now if it didn't just cancel my cast and put me in cd. Devs haven't tried doing the quest.

all i did was go to the bank in valdraken in that confined area i did it very quick got 10% a few times

Let me begin by saying that this quest sucks. A 5 minute cooldown with an increase of only 5% at a time is a bit much. I am only 65% of the way there but I have some suggestions:

1) Be PATIENT. Put on some Netflix while you wait for your cooldown. Also, be prepared to go up MUCH slower than 5% after every use of the Vellum (see below).
2) The mats are expensive for this. I went to the AH to see which Awakened element was the cheapest and purchased the full amount I needed to complete the quest with ONLY the one element (on my realm, an Awakened Earth was only 65 gold whereas Awakened Frost was 135 gold... this adds up!). I didn't figure this out until I was about 45% of the way there and it cost me.
3) Once you start releasing the shadowflame, chase after the flame balls by following the shadows (use a speed boost if you have one) and pay attention to your extra action bar; once it turns into the awakened element you need, stop chasing them.
4) If you did not receive the option to attune to the element of your choice, wait 5 minutes and try again (this is where the patience comes in).
5) Lastly, as pointed out by Unaffiliated above, make sure you target yourself before clicking the action button lest the credit to someone close by who is also on the quest.

Fastest way to do this is to stock up on the 3 cheapest awakened elements available (for me it was frost, fire and earth), get around 100-200 of each, any extras at the end can just be resold on the AH so no real problem. Then go to your WOD garrison via the garrison hearthstone, and talk to the person behind the mission table to enter the Proving Grounds, once in the proving grounds whenever you start a round at the panderan guy the item with a 5 minute cooldown will have it's CD reset, allowing you to rapid fire each usage and complete the quest in ~10 minutes rather than 100 minutes. If you get have to use an awakened element that you didn't stock up on (like perhaps air) then just right click off the 5 minute buff that corresponds to that element and redo the item, if you don't click it off then it won't let you get a different one until the first buff is gone.

buggy quest, annoying quest, (5min cd?), not clear what to do without wowhead comments, sharing in the misery. Acquiring legendary has been an intentionally awful experience from the developers who obviously don't play this game. /spit

The way it works is that you have to MOVE during cast (yes you can) to catch maximum flying balls you possibly can. If you catch none, the extra button disapear, it's not a bug.

ALSO: OTHER PEOPLE can catch it (even if not in your group) cast the awakening comp and then cast targeting you with the extra butto

If you are having problems, or quest is not progressing, I suggest you find a place to do it alone, something happens when other people get one of the falling orbs which makes your next cast bug and not give you quest progression.

After doing 25% alone, i found myself after a dungeon in valdraken, made about 5-7 casts, all bugged. I am now in a area without players and my quest is progressing just as it should. Hope this is helpfull

This is where the comment from user Hopesedge comes handy, regardless of garrison lvl, if you have it, you can talk to the guy behind the mission table. Choose proving grounds. Talk to the panda, choose any option, talk again to yield. Use Vellum. Target yourself just in case. Repeat until you finished the quest.

IMPORTANT: Do not mix this quest with To The Test: Rune of Shadowbinding - When I left my raid, the quest percentage reset after getting up to 55% (110 Awakened Elements already used).

You have been warned! Blizzard has clearly not even slightly play-tested these increasingly complex and buggy quests.

Data compilation to bypass the five minutes cooldown of Shalasar's Sophic Vellum

Requirements:

Have the Warlords of Draenor citadel unlocked. If not go to the dark portal area in Blasted Lands and talk to Khadgar, take his quest, leave it and cross the portal. You will appear in front of Prophet Velen. Do a couple quests to get the citadel and that's it. If you are horde the process is similar after crossing the portal, but in another area and with other heroes.

Having 200 Awakened Fire in your bags, it's the cheapest. If you want to speed it up buy: 100 Awakened Fire, 100 Awakened Air, 100 Awakened Earth, and 100 Awakened Frost and use second macro instead. Once you finish, sell the excess back at the auction.

If you bought 200 Awakened Fire, create this macro and assign it to a button on your bars:

/cancelaura Unstable Frost
/click StaticPopup1Button1
/run SelectGossipOption(1)
/use Shalasar's Sophic Vellum

What to do?:

Go to your citadel and talk to the NPC in charge of the follower table. Tell them you want to go to the proving grounds. Once there, do the following:

Right-click Trial Master Rotun and press macro. Event will begin.
Press macro. You will use Shalasar's Sophic Vellum.
Does the extra action button ask for an Awakened element that you have in your bags? Press the macro twice; if not, proceed to next step.
Right-click Trial Master Rotun and press macro to finish event. You will be incapacitated for a few seconds, and the cooldown of Shalasar's Sophic Vellum will be reset.
Repeat the process from the first step until completing the mission.

You do not have to catch the orbs. At the end of the channel it will give you a random element, Frost, Air, Fire, Earth. You need 10 awakend of that element to use the action button. It will also give you a buff with a 5 minute timer of the same element. As long as that buff is up it will only give you that element. This gets removed when you use the element action button. If you are unable to use the action button due to not enough Awakened for that element, you can click off the elemental buff and try again. Once you use the action button it will give you another action button and put an orb in your bag. Using the button consumes the orb and gives 5% towards quest completion. The vellum has a 5 minute timer but this can be cheesed in Proving Grounds(resets timers when you start an event). If you get an element that you don't have enough awakened to use the action button you can just click off the buff and it will give you a random element on the next one. Elements can repeat multiple times(rng gods please be nice!).

Surely not for the people that already wasted a lot of time and materials only to be met with a random 5 min CD on a 20 step click a ton that munches even more gold?

Right?

Oh and it can bug out because the game designer heard "hey make it like classic, people love classic".

Let me add some explanations as I found the info lacking here.
step 1) go to the proving grounds in Pandaria, Kun-Lai Summit zone, Temple of white tiger location, talk to NPC Trial Master Rotun and enter the proving grounds.
step 2) talk to him to start a scenario, which will re-set the 5 minute cooldown. Talk to him again to end the scenario.
step 3) Each time you click the veil scroll, a cast will start. At the end of the cast, you get a buff corresponding to an element that lasts for 5 min. An extra action button will pop up where your extra action button is located on your screen corresponding to the buff.
step 4) Either click off the buff and repeat step 2 and 3 until you get the element you want (to save gold, i.e. awakened earth or fire but this will take more time as its a random rng which buff you get), or click your extra action button to turn the 10 element into a stabilized element in your bags.
step 5) click the extra action button again to turn the stabilized element into 5% progress on the quest.
Fyi you need to do this 20x to fill to 100%, so you need 200 total elements. Do 200 earth if you want to save money at the cost of time, or 100 earth and 100 fire if you want to complete it faster. 50 of each would be the fastest, but also the most costly.

Hope this clears some things up!

if doing this while also participating in a superbloom, make sure you don't pick a buff that gives you the action button, since it'll replace the essence button.

I am astonished at the poor quality of design this quest exhibits.

Extremely unclear text, poorly-communicated objective with an expensive and arbitrarily long cooldown. Needlessly involving other players for... reasons?
On no level did this work. Please cross this off methods to develop gameplay in the future.

Some notes from doing this with friends:

The shadows on the ground are hard to see. make sure everyone has their shadow draw detail cranked up.
It's not hard to catch multiple, BUT clicking the button will create multiple . HOWEVER, you will only be able to send one to the wielder of Fyr'alath. This will consume 2x 10-stacks of pricey elements, and one will be wasted, entirely. We found no ways to be able to use the extras to cast and send to the weilder.
Frequently, the Fyr'alath wielder saw the button to convert the element into , and it disappeared instantly. If the wielder doesn't move, that seems to increase the chances of this happening. So, gotta at least pretend to make an attempt.
