As of the current build, the questline seems to end rather abruptly with no clear reward? It's possible this was all added for the sake of flavour and worldbuilding, but it feels like it's missing something.

Can anyone else not do this? Is this a lvl 70 quest that I shouldn't be doing yet as a 65? Lord Banehollow has 598k health and I can barely get a dent on him, even with a felguard summoned. Whenever my demon dies the multitude other demons Lord Banehollow summons in charge at me and my revived felguard can't grab aggro fast enough and I melt :'[

I got to lord banehollow after dying a couple times he stopping appearing…. So I abandoned the quest thinking it would reset but now the quest is gone and I don’t know how to get it back :(

Note the area around Banehollow is phased so you cant group up with others

This is NOT funny Blizzard! Why on earth are you making Warlocks do this hideous quest chain? I've played a warlock for decades and never had this much trouble killing something. You seriously think we can solo an elite deamon AND his pets? Get real!

- - - I hadnt logged into my lock since posting this until today, I flew back over the he was there, so i used all the tips people had left here, subjugate, use drain life, healthstone, etc. I did infact manage to kill him but boy was that a struggle! - - -

I had logged out about an hour ago due to being frustrated dying over and over and i've just logged back in and even though I have the quest I can no longer see him at all. He no longer appears, I fear dropping the quest in case I can not get it back again! Any help would be appreciated!

I just did this as Demonology as a brand new Tauren (formerly troll). Kill all the adds, it's a must! After that, it's just burn, burn, burn. Once the shield goes away give it hell. Use all your tools!

If you leave for whatever reason and return and cannot see the boss, abandon the quest and pick it back up at the Altar of Storms in the Burning Steppes. Pain in the butt but it does fix the issue of the boss failing to show up.

I just completed this quest at level 70 with 399 ilvl as a Destro lock. I used my Voidwalker to tank. Take out the adds and than focus on the boss (he seems to enjoy giving himself those barriers which extends this fight). Heal the minion whenever it's low and keep yourself healed through spells like mortal coil and soulburn + drain life. I was able to do it one shot. Good luck everyone! <3

Some notes:
1st priority should be killing his summoned demons, imps, fel stalkers, etc
YOU CAN SUBJIGATE THE PIT LORD, it makes it easier when it is summoned, then re-summon your felguard when the pit lord dies (using fel domination to help)

2nd avoid all the AOE, get out of the big red circles and the small red swirls, dont stand near the shadow balls.

3rd burn burn burn, by fel-fire be purged, kill that demon with extreme prejudice, malice, and rage.

It's possible with a brand new level 70 with a mix of timewalking gear + whatever world quest gear the game wants to give-- me and a friend both managed it pretty quickly. Keep the adds down, but the shield is an absorb shield, not an invulnerability, so cleave when possible. Spam drain health as needed, use your defensives liberally, don't tunnel vision the boss. You may die a couple times, but it'll be ok!

Day 1 of the patch, I was able to complete this on a level 62 destro warlock (will update item level later, but I was undergeared). Here are some take a ways

- You're going to have use subjugate demon to steal his demons, otherwise it's a tough battle. Maybe even impossible, but im sure a well geared max level warlock could do it. Still, I would go in as aff or destro so you don't have to worry about loosing your felguard's damage.

- I died, ressed, and came back to find the boss gone. I tried reloading, leaving the zone and coming back, even exiting the game. I had to abandon the quest, pick it up again in the blasted lands, and start over.

- The 2nd time around, Oman was actually there fighting as well. Seems to aggro the boss sometimes which takes some pressure off. I actually died a 2nd time but when I came back, Oman was still fighting and the boss was left at the same health level. Because you also turn in the quest to him afterwards, it might be best to restart the fight if he doesn't show up in the beginning of the fight. Saw one person say nothing happened afterwards, so wondering if him being in the fight ensures he is available afterwards.

- Focus on adds. His weaker adds can go quickly and I was able to one shot most of his felhounds. His stronger demons must be defeated or subjugated. They focus on you and it seems his shields either are ommune to damage or have more health while he has a stronger pet. Not sure what it was or if it was just in my head. Either way, the demons focus on you so you want to get rid of him quick.

- Subjugate his felguard immediately. Once he summons his pit lord, subjugate it and kill off the felguard. The pit lord can take a beating and dish it out too. He also summoned a fiendish imp and a stronger felhound that I just killed with the pitlord. The pitlord did die eventually, but at thag point he had low health.

It's a tricky fight, but doable. Make sure to have any defensive, heals, and teleport abilities set up and ready to go before you start. Also don't know if curses work because I always forget to use them but maybe it will help.

Additional note: the quest text said Oman eyes were now green, but unfortunately they were still lightforged red for me.

Also, only 3 warlocks gave their souls. So what happened to the grimtotem cousin, the night elf, and the kultiran?

So, I died 3 or 4 times in the process, but eventually worked it and killed it.

So, you can subjugate the pit lords or the fel-guard.
Then banish the other. Keep an eye on the one you banish as banish will wear off.

For me, I subjugated the Felguard, then banished the Pit Lord. Any extra mobs that turned up I killed or AoE'd.
If you need to, fear or mortal coil will work.

Make sure you have health potions and healthstones before you go into it.
Drain Life is handy too.

It's an endurance fight.
Initiate Owen will turn up in the last few percentage.

Pain in the ass fight, but do-able.

OK so my first try I died ( no duh,thats why I came here) and read the comment about the adds. Switched to my AoE build with Seed of Corruption, Dark Glare, Vile Taint and Soul Rot , kept my Void Walker up instead of Sacrifice and judt DOT'ed up the adds with generous use of Malefic Rapture and Seed to AoE the bosses shield when it was up. Targeted boss heavily after adds died
and shield was down. Avoided the fire on the ground using healing and shield CD when needed , Soul Rot is good for that buffing the Drain Life and got him down the second time in less than 5 minutes. I was geared with raid normal set , ilvl being 424 but with the right specs and careful use of CD's should be doable by many. I liked this little quest line . Got to see the Darkmoon fair after hours, boss was just tough enough to make it a challenge unlike some quests where the end boss is just to easy but not impossible.

this quest is dumb as hell. there's no freakin way... even with me stealing his minions, it took me forever to get him to a quarter health, and then he just kept summoning more and more pets, and all I'm trying to do at this point is stay alive... which of course I didn't

Killed the boss at the first try, not sure if it's nerfed but I did it with a 390 ilvl Orc Destruction Warlock with starter build, whole fight took around 4 minutes.

TL;DR Key is to Subjugate the summoned demons!

(I rewatched my own fight, now here is a small update, uploaded the video too, link below.)
Fight starts after you find Madam Shadow and after a small talk (SPOILER) she turns into a Dreadlord named Lord Banehollow!
That's the boss you will face!

But, now, BEFORE THAT prepare yourself! Conjure your Healthstone, summon your Void tank, pop any buff thingies you will use BEFORE approaching Madam Shadow. One extra note, in my fight I totally forgot and didn't put down a Demonic Gateway but it can help to reduce your aggro, so keep that in mind too, during preparation.
Also, prepare your mind too, because it is surely a (long) SOLO fight, no one can assist you and the place gets phased, no other player can enter.

After the reveal of the true face, fight starts quite normally.
- At 90% hp boss will pop his first fel bubble, this breaks with certain damage, but he will also summon an Empowered Felguard with a sword and board equipped, that will probably be tanked by your Voidwalker instantly, BUT here is the moment:
SUBJUGATE HIM!
The Empowered Felguard will easily tank Lord Banehollow, do your rotation, melt him down.
- But you won't, because you will just melt his fel bubble down, and when you manage to do that he will summon the second demon, an Empowered Pit Lord.
Now, in my fight I subjugated Pit Lord and Felguard attacked me, so I just waited for Havoc to proc on him and kept attacking boss, used a Mortal Coil for heal and Fear him away, then easily killed him. Probably you should keep Felguard as tank and kill Pit Lord though, seems more reasonable, but even if you don't you'll manage, no worries.
- Now you'll have two Empowered Dreadstalkers, just kill them, they're low hp, no need to worry. They'll keep coming until you get boss down to 60%.
- At 60% you'll have your second Empowered Pit Lord, yours will probably die off at this point so subjugate this new one and turn back to your rotation.
- Now you'll see an Empowered Imp, fun thing is, if you don't kill (or subjugate) this one, he will do a Fire Storm and rain an AoE with that all around, you'll see small fall points, escape from them.
- Boss will also start to cast Rain of Fire too, you'll see big circles on the ground, also escape from these.
- Again, prio is Empowered Imp, kill it then turn to boss, do some Drain Life, watch out for your own hp.
- Your Empowered Pit Lord won't keep any aggro, but that way it will do nice damage, he will die at some point but no worries, just keep doing your damage rotation and healing yourself.
- At 30% boss will pop another fel bubble and start another Drain Souls, just dps his bubble down now, but oh no... You won't because this bubble is huge, fills up boss's hp up to 50%~ish levels, but no worries help is coming!
- When boss finishes his channel, this time an Empowered Felhunter will come. Immediately Subjugate it! (I don't know what will happen if you don't but since they are "Caster Killers" and you are a caster, probably nothing good!)
- But here is the good part, this new colorful fluffy puppy IS the help! Send your new pet to boss, and here is the good trick: It will dispel boss's fel bubble instantly so you can continue to melt him down!
- Watch out for Seeds of Corruption now, with the purple circles and orbs at the center, also watch out for the Rain of Fire's big red circle, won't be too much of a problem but don't tunnel vision because boss is low.
- You can Fear or Mortal Coil boss now, pop one to heal yourself if you get low, also don't forget to Life Drain too, watch out your hp!
- Throw some more damage and he's dead! (Promising he'll be back... Arnie? Naa...)

So, that's it!

As you see, I can't say it's "easy" but it's very doable.
Focus on Subjugate, that was the key reflex move for me.

Holy moly - this one's a royal mess. Died the first attempt - changed tactics and took him down second go but that took about 5 mins, multiple healthstones etc. Then the quest ends abruptly, no breadcrumbs on to anything else - it just stops!

Um...I kinda just did it. I read all the comments about how hard it was...
No sarcasm or jokes, I just facerolled it. I didnt subjugate or banish or fear or even interrupt.
I just had my voidwalker tank everything.
Affliction Warlock, 400ish ilvl. And frankly, 400 ilvl and I am facerolling it. You should be barely struggling at like 385. Took maybe 2 minutes.

Minor good news for those that hate this quest. You really don't need to do it.

Just go to a barber shop and you'll find that all of your demons can have their appearance modified without doing the quest.
You'll just be missing the one thing the quest added for the appearance of imps (I still haven't figured what one things that was).

Ok, I got it on my third try. I'm a level 50 Affliction Warlock with an ilvl of only 83. The difference in my third and final attempt was that I used Subjugate Demon twice, kept Curse of Tongues on the boss and activated Unending Resolve twice during the fight. Remember that you can also fear and banish demons. Good luck.

For those wondering "what's next?" after completing this quest: Yes, there is a followup. It will take you to meet Oman in Booty Bay. At this time, nobody seems to be getting this next quest, and I suspect that the followup is timegated until tuesday reset. Regardless, there is more to the questline.

EDIT: This was confirmed today, July 18th. Initiate Oman will send you a mail containing the item "A Shady Letter" which begins the next step of the quest. Whether it takes 7 days from the day you complete the first quest chain, or if the letter simply comes on the day of the next tuesday reset, I cannot say (I completed the quest chain on patch day). It's a one-step quest to speak with Oman called "A Lighter Shade of Fel" and rewards you with a glyph.

For those wondering "can I beat this?" I echo the other comments from successful runs of it; you can pull it off, even at lower ilvls than current raid gear, if you keep a cool head and use your abilities. That means:

Subjugate, subjugate, subjugate! Lord Banehollow's adds are annoying and messy if you don't stop them. I strongly recommend the Pit Lord for subjugating (I seem to remember that the Pit Lord dies over time and he'll summon another, just grab them as they come). Banishing or simply focusing down his Felguard is a good option and leaves only a few weaker adds to mop up. Remember, Banish lasts 30sec!
His lesser felhounds are annoying but are fragile can be one-shot with a Conflagrate or similar instant cast spell. His imps are similarly weak.
Prepare! Conjure healthstones and use 'em. I'm a mediocre 395ilvl with no tier and a mess of unenchanted gear, and I needed that burst of healing to get out of a tough spot.
Spec yourself in a way that emphasizes self-healing and defense. This is not a sprint, this is a marathon of a fight. Dark Pact at high health can put a big shield buffer on your precious HP, Grim Feast will get you Drain Life healing that much quicker, Soul Leech with Fel Synergy is good ambient healing/shields while you're focused on damaging things.
Others mentioned using Aff or Destro instead of Demo to avoid a big DPS loss from subjugating the Pit Lords, and I agree; I did it with a Grimoire of Sacrifice Destro build. Avoid demon-centric talents which don't work on subjugated demons; Soul Link without GrimSac for example, or Fel Domination. I didn't use it when I did the fight, but Banehollow casts a lot so Curse of Tongues might be useful to have.
Some report that Oman shows up around the last part of the fight; he did show up for me, but he seemed kind of useless. He might be able to hold aggro on Banehollow and prevent the encounter from failing in the event that you die and self-rez (you did soulstone yourself, right?) but I wouldn't count on it.
Banehollow's shield is beefy. After dealing with his adds, you have to burst as best you can to damage or outright break his shield. I specced Destro with high emphasis on single-target; I probably could have spared a few points in an AOE talent to mop up the felhounds, but it worked out for me anyway.
"Wasn't this easier on the PTR?" Yes, yes it was. I suspect the devs wanted people to not get hung up on this step and do the rest of the questline on the PTR for testing purposes, but wanted this to be a sort of mini Green Fire-boss-type encounter when it hit live.
CC! I can't believe I forgot CC. There's no adds to accidentally aggro with a rogue fear, so fear mobs if you need to. Mortal Coil can be a great interrupt and doubles as healing.
Stay mobile; this fight has "move away from the ground effect before it goes off" type AOEs flying about which, while not one-shots on their own, can put you in one-shot range from everything else going on if you stand in too many. In this case, self-healing is your friend.

Taken together, these pointers and some other bits I'm sure I missed but others put in their comments will net you the kill and get you past this point in the quest. Good luck, fellow Locks!

I'm a super casual Warlock player (my alt can't even do LFR) and this took me 4 attempts to do.
Subjugate the Pit lords, use Voidwalker to hold off Imp aggro, and at the final "phase" where he summons multiple imps, I specced into Infernal and used him to hold them off.
This was very challenging, but also kind of fun, and it made me use spells I don't usually even consider using.

For anyone stupid enough (like myself lol) to go through the demonic gateway or hearth out, the Demonic Gateway is literally IN the Blasted Lands and that's the area you're supposed to go for this part of the chain.

This is the toughest non group quest I can recall. I died on attempting it and thought that might be what was required. Not so. Also, I had to run back to my corpse, no flight option for me, so just abandoned it rather than risk another corpse run

I'm a 416 Destro lock, and I had no issues with the fight. I sent in my VW, and just bombed her. A few of the adds came at me which I burned them down, and then moved back to the main. When he got low I summoned my infernal to finish him off. I never casted subjugate once during the fight.

Holy crap this quest is tuned too hard. I'm a casual player, and there is very little I like less than repeatedly dying, having to run across the map, then dying again.

Took a few tries, but I managed to complete this on a level 68 demonology lock with a 301 ilevel by subjugating summoned Felguards and Pit lords and then using my voidwalker. I also constantly applied curse of weakness to him.

Be advised that when you corpse run and res, be sure to wait for your mana to restore because I ran out of mana after getting much better at the fight - ugh!

yes, banish the fel guard (guy with the axe) and subjugate the pit lords. I also subjugated the large fel hunter (the warlock dog-esque creatures) later on and that was not bad. be sure to fel domination and resummon your own demons (quickly with domination) if the subjugated one dies. healthstone and mortal coil for healing of course with life drain. once Oman joins the fight, it was pretty much over. I believe he dispels the rest of the shield (not sure as I had the large fel hunter subjugated) and you enrage and can nuke the boss after pretty easily. STAY OUT of the AoE, it does so much damage.

There looks to be a followup quest later on in the mail with Oman so keep your eyes open for that.

I finally was able to do this with my demon warlock after numerous times (too numerous to mention). I tried to use subjugate demon, which would replace my voidwealker, and in the heat of battle I would forget to resummon my voidwalker until it was too late. This time I focused on keeping my demon alive using health funnel and then using drain life on the other demons that spawned in the course of the battle. This worked for me, especially when I was running around trying to avoid the nasty stuff he was throwing at me. My warlock is a lowly lvl 42 with equally low level equipment. My reward for completing this was also low: 7,150 experience, 36 gold, 55 silver, 20 copper and Fiendish Imps being cast on me. For a pretty intense fight I think this should be better, much better.

I was able to pull this off on my first try. My observations:

The suggestions in other comments are extremely helpful. I urge you to read them, particularly about Subjugation, and when to use it.
I ran Demonology. I don't know if that's a better spec to run here or not, but my wife ran Destro, and gave up after a few failures, where the closest she got was about 20%.
My 'lock was level 30. She received the Summons to the quest chain the day after she dinged. I bring this up because she is decked out with heirlooms, with an iLevel of 77. My suspicion is that due to her level and the presence of those heirlooms, she is much harder to kill, proportionately, than higher-level warlocks that are running proportionately less-powerful gear.
In support of the above observation, my wife's 'lock is a level 70, and while her gear is decent for open-world content, she is not a raider, and is nowhere near iLevel 400.
And finally, the reward for this chain is apparently the "Fiend" skin for the Imp pet. I'm not sure that would be worth the stress, if your experience on this quest has you getting killed multiple times.

Did this my 2nd try on my lvl 48 afflicition with crap gear. came here and read the comments about subjugating the pit lords and using curse of weakness. With some kiting and smashing all the buttons I got it done.

Fairly difficult for a modern retail quest. Beat it first time at level 36 w/destro spec and wearing mostly heirlooms upgrade to 35. Standard destro rotation. I think this is scaling wrong and is actually easier to beat at low levels and is designed to be done at 30.

Other than that -

Used Voidwalker. Banished all the adds. Used havoc/curse of tongues on the boss then attacked adds and cast drain life here and there. At about 1/4 health the NPC shows up and PI/Bloodlusts.

Avoid the fire. I ran burning rush w/the dmg reduction nodes for this.

So I got up to this quest on my level 34 lock, got to Blasted Lands, ran the gauntlet of the elites everywhere en route, ran through a barrier and got ported out to the graveyard nearby! err what was that all about, so I tried again, ported back to the graveyard ^^
I am guessing that it is something to do with my level but have no idea, no messages, nada!
Reading through these posts about how hard the fight is, maybe its some divine intervention from above or summatt!
I'll probably try again when I can muster some enthusiasm, maybe on a higher level one, but tbh I can't be arsed with all the BS the game throws at us poor souls who pay the wages of Blizzards' staff that just seem to want to piss me off virtually every time try to do something, but I digress.
Anyone have a theory as to why I can't even enter the area shown on my minimap as where the quest supposedly is?

Ok, I guess a lot of difficulty here, but to keep things simple I'll just say this (not bragging, anyone can do this with simple "rules").

Don't stand in the fire.

Use a destro warlock, use the Infernal liberally, and then the chaos bolt when doing so. Otherwise burn away with Incinerate.

Use the Voidwalker for your pet. Refresh his health as needed (keep him up to between 150 and 200 k, doesn't require many top offs). The voidwalker will draw aggro from everyone summoned.

Drain health from the big guy as needed.

Have a healthstone ready, maybe a potion. (I didn't have either, came into the fight ignorant). Either should make it easier I imagine.

Most importantly, again, DON"T stand in the fire (circles red circles which are the NPC's own "Rain of Fire" casts).

Cast "Immolate" on the big guy then "Channel Demonfire" (if you have that, I do, find it quite useful for ads and even main targets, its a Talent for Destruction). Then Incinerate until Channel Demonfire is off cooldown then repeat with Immolate, Demonfire, then Incinerate, repeat, etc. That's the basic rotation here. Ignore everyone else (again Voidwalker will keep aggro, just watch his health doesn't go below 100 K), and top priority is keeping out of the "fire" (the red circles). Yes a lot of moving around, YES it'll take some time (about 5 minutes) but not much to focus on here IMO.

You may have to resummon a voidwalker in the middle so be ready with a Fel Domination so you can do so instantaneously.

Pretty much it. With lvl 386. Just keep cool. Hope it helps.

Okay so my warlock is 281 item level
I tried 2 times in demo because thats what i main quickly realizing we have a new "green fire" situation
So after dying those 2 times i specced into Destru and won in my first try.

Subjugate demon on the pitlord and Havoc + 2 Chaos bolts into the felguard and that was dispatched
my pitlord then died obv and i held out with health stone and Drain Life.

Subjugated the Dog too and killed him.

Fairly easy fight ngl after switching to destru as usual

In addition to the lovely advice from all the other people, I recommend the summoned demons of your own: Summon Infernal and Summon Soulkeeper. They are just two more for wheedling him down.

I died about 15-17 times until I got the sucker down. It was maddening, but I used Curse of Tongues, Unending Resolve, a Fortune Cookie, a Whispered Pact, and Drain Soul/Healthstone. Also keep an eye on your armor; I didn't realize how low it was until it turned red on me because I was too focused on my shortcomings in this damned fight.

I used my Void Walker, I am 325 iLevel, and level 70. After all this, this damned quest chain should give you a title as well seriously. Downed at 2 am EDT 7/26/2023.

Just did this as affliction with a succubus (Voidwalker couldn't keep aggro off me, thinking about it now I should have just sacrificed my fel hunter probably would have done more damage and had the spell interrupt.) ilvl 387 mostly suffusion zone gear, barely took any damage most of the fight got down to about 25% once from taking too many rain of fire tics with adds on me. I just made sure to clear adds as often as possible and kept Tongues, Agony and UA refreshed on the main guy while avoiding his aoe. Popped Mortal Coil when my health got to 80% between that and Soul Leech I only dropped below 50% the one time and just popped Soul Pact and a health stone and was fine. I enjoyed the quest chain... up until the final boss. My poor girl must have died a dozen times before we gave up. With poor eyesight, and a very small screen it was impossible to see or click on what I needed to. They were all crowded together. When fighting multiple targets on whatever class I use AOE attacks and rely a lot on pets. This obviously didn't work for me. I usually avoid boss fights and high level raids and such these days because I know I can't manage them. If I'd known it was going to end in something so hard I wouldn't have bothered, but I was tempted by the thought of something new. What a fool I was.

I used only the following things

Affliction spec
Agony (instant cast low mana)
Running running running out of any AOE the foe casts
Subjugate Demon (this is apparently the intended feature to test) Each time Banehollow summons a friend, I steal it and turn it on him.
Drain Life - only when I can stand still, to steal hit points off of Banehollow, for healing myself. MOVE OUT OF AOE at all costs.

it was ugly and painful and I won. Lowbie warlock (level 33 void elf). I do not consider myself decently geared.

Edit To Add
When the lightforged warlock-to-be Oman shows up he's a definite help but not an instant win. A sight for sore eyes, to be sure.
He does buff you and you two kill it together.

You can do this.

This is a very poor quest for people who prefer to stand still in their fights.

This is probably a great quest to train to be a raider.

This is a HORRIBLE quest for Blizz to sell people on wanting to play warlock.

Just tried this on my lvl 53 affliction lock, with very poor gear, ilvl 124.
To be honest, after reading here how tough it is I was surprised that I was able to do it, I just kept popping curse of agony, corruption, the odd mortal coil, and unstable affliction, kept moving and staying out of the rather obvious burning rings on the ground. I even forgot to re-summon my Voidy after the first subjugate demon! I used one healthstone, and even managed to get over half of her health back with a drain life. The whole thing took about 5 minutes and wasn't all that bad really. Maybe they nerfed it o.O

Beat the boss today solo on 3rd attempt as a lvl60 Destro, in heirloom items and some quest blues and greens, iLvl 155. I cleared the Kanrethad fight back in MoP and this fight seemed like a very watered down version. I imagine that if you have DF raid gear on, this fight should be a breeze. One weird thing to note is that the untransformed "Madam Shadow" kept respawning during the fight and going back through the pre-fight dialogue. Through me off at first, because I thought some other mechanic was coming, but once she finished the dialogue she just poofs away instead of transforming again and the fight isn't interrupted.

My strat:
-Drain Life and Mortal Coil are your friends.
-Create a healthstone before fight, save it for later.
-Placed gates on the left and right sides. Demonic circle wherever is convenient. (I plopped it down behind the crate to the right for LoS).
-Started with Voidwalker, and started burning down the shield. Subjugated the first Felguard he summons.
-Dreadstalkers are weak, they died quickly to Conflagrates, or with a Rain of Fire while the Pit Lord was on me.
-Kited the Pit Lord across the area, used gates to get away once he closed on me. Spammed Drain Life when he got low and Felguard finished him.
-Once all the summons were down, went back to bursting him down, using Drain Life if I ever got below 60% health.
-He'll eventually summon an empowered fel imp, this thing is a priority target, so kill him quick to avoid his AoEs. The boss will cast Rain of Fire and make orange circles on the ground. Get out, use gates and circle to avoid.
-If you don't have any of his demons subjugated and there's a Pit Lord out, subjugate it.
-Keep burning the boss down. He'll cast purple blobs with circles on the ground. Avoid them just like the orange circles. (It was around here I had to pop my Healthstone.)
-Eventually he'll summon a large fel hunter, subjugate it, as it'll eat his shield.
-After the last round of summons, the boss is easy to finish. He'll cast another shield, but the subjugated fel hunter eats it. Eventually, Oman showed up, and the boss added another shield equal to his full health bar. Fel hunter ate it. After that, just burn him down and spam Drain Life/Mortal Coil if you get low.
-Once he goes down, there may be some left over demons you haven't killed. They don't despawn when he dies (or at least, they didn't for me), so go ahead and mop them up.

Once Banehollow and any leftover demons are dead, Oman will be standing nearby for you to turn the quest in.

Just beat it today as Demonology, somehow with never using subjugate like was suggested. By the skin of my teeth with 1000 hp left no less. It was a pain. :(

So many comments, and yet I shall add my own two copper: L70 Affliction, but iLevel 314. The highest-voted comment was indeed helpful, and other than using the Demonic Gateway, the tips there about subjugation were very helpful. At one point my healing potions and shields were on cooldown, I was holding on by a thread, but Banehollow was not shielded and Drain Life really sucked it out of him and healed me up very quickly.

Oman was waiting for me at the edge of the area when I was done, and gave me the new ability. That sounds like a change from when it first went live.

It was not the longest possible fight, and definitely a bit challenging, but as long as you keep an eye on your health and keep moving, you should be fine. Throw the kitchen sink at him!

I completed this easily at 70, ilvl 414, so I suspect it been nerfed. I didn't use subjugate at all, but i did use Seeds of Corruption heavily when adds were up, if I was low health (once really) I used Mortal Coil and Drain Life a bit. waiting for reset (/7 days) to get the next part.

Apparently you can not do Darkmoon Faire while on this quest chain even if you are beyond the faire parts. Currently on Lord Banehollow and the faire grounds are empty/spooky.
And there is no exit portals from the faire. Dropping this quest did not restore the faire grounds, even after hearthstone out and coming back in.
UPDATE: Per my trouble ticket, I can no longer do normal Darkmoon Faire until the questline is complete

Okay, did this at Level 35, ilvl 82. Start with your VW, then dominate the empowered fiends when they spawn. Banish other demons as needed, DOOM and Corruption the main guy down. Dran Life the fellhunters as they have little hp . When he summons an imp, burn it down, keep moving, having set up potrals and such. Once he summons a big fellhunter once he has a BIG bubble on, dominate it and it will take that down. Keep up the DOOM and other ticks. CoT is also nice.

I just received the WoW equivilant of pity sex. After about 4 real * failures my last run
had no Pit Lords and only 2-3 minor demons. I used the sugjugate only once (on the
Fel Guard), I did not have to banish any and never used my Demonic Circle.

*after I came here and learned subjugate demon was my friemd.

I don't feel any quest, including class specific quests, should be so difficult your toon dies multiple times. I really enjoyed playing my Warlock until this quest came up and yes, my Warlock is not my main. After watching multiple videos, with other players being successful, I feel woefully inadequate. My toon is level 70 and her ilvl is 408. The best I've done so far is get the demon down to 10%. It's really great there are so many comments and videos on how to "finish" this quest, but no luck so far with over 10 tries, AND until I do, I am locked out of Darkmoon Faire... : - (. Hopefully I can get over my frustration and get her through this quest... without another "death" and repair bill!

For added insult to injury, if you happen to get stuck on this quest and decide to abandon it during the DMF and want to actually get to the Faire, you're plain screwed - I'm stuck in the stupid Midnight at the Faire phase, despite dropping the quest, and have no means to get back to the ACTUAL Faire that I want to be at to do my profession quests and pick up the XP buff.

On a level 66 warlock, I got pwned. Using the Subjugate Demon strat, I could get to the last 20% or so, then he destroyed me. Guess I'll have to wait until I'm 70 and geared.

Just adding that most people talk about max level character with good enough gear to do this quest but it's quite easy with a low level character.
I just did it with a lock lvl 37 and Madam Shadow/Lord Banehollow was ll 38 Elite. It took two shots and died quickly, minions didn't even appeared.

For those having issues it appears scaling doesnt exactly work with well with it in our favor. I did this on a 60 warlock and took like maybe 5% of my health in damage total. I didnt bother ccing or using void walker. I just used felguard and spammed abilities not really paying much attention. The adds get practically one shot via aoe and the shield is a joke.

So...... as a lvl 66 demo lock....this was useless to me. Not trying to sound rude, but they screw us little guys with this quest! Not even sure why we get it before lvl 70...... but at lvl 66 with an ilvl of 268, she ate and spat me out like I was nothing......

I finally after many many tries abandoned the quest to kill the demon, but I am now unable to get to the normal Darkmoon Faire. That sucks. Any advice? I really don't want to just keep beating my head against a wall but don't want to forever be unable to go to Darkmoon Faire again.

I got it on my first try thanks to the great notes above. Level 70, Affliction, iLvl 437. Thanks all. I think the key strategy was the Subjugate Demon. Also, I learned something new about my toon. I didn't realize Mortal Coil gives you 20% health. I've just used it as a low-level fear tool. Obviously, I'm not a competitive player and I have 30 toons, all of them different types, so I often forget small things about each one.

Just to add to the list of "this is how I did it" comments.

I just managed this on a level 31 Demonology 'lock. I used the Felguard and spammed dreadstalkers, Hand of Gul'dan, the occasional subjugate, drain life, health funnel, and Corruption when I had a moment and curses as needed, Demonbolts when triggered.

I did "die" twice before I pulled it off but, I managed it eventually. For folks I read complaining about having to run back... you're a warlock. Soulstone.

Killed him on the ?th try (after doing a serious amount of swearing as I died multiple times). Demonology lock ilvl 433 with all the stamina and intellect I could manage - including the IX scroll of intellect and a three- spiced mammoth kabob (which gives stamina and intellect).
As others have suggested set up a demonic gateway and created the healthstone
had also got gold level health and mana potions just in case

Popped the void walker, the felguard and a demonic tyrant as well as having as many imps as I could and kept up the dread stalkers
I stayed on the lower level (as far back as I could get while still sitting him with drain life and shadow bolts) and NOTHING came near me until the second phase when he starts throwing fire bolt stuff out (and you have to move). So I didn't need to do any of the subjugates at that stage.

This allowed me to get him to about half health while keeping me at full health and then just keep drain life and the dread stalkers as well as imps

I think I possibly had to subjugate one add in the final phase but I got there :D
Just need to work out when I can do darkmoon faire again having got rid of the "Midnight at the faire" buff

Good luck and keep going - it is possible even if you are generally a button masher like me

Turned out that yes I had killed him - but I didn't have the quest accepted having got rid of it while trying to get rid of the DMF buff and not piking it up again. I needed to pick the quest up in Burning steps and kill him AGAIN before I got the completion and the buff has gone. You dont need to wait for the letter to be sent to be able to get DMF quests again

Just completed this on a level 32 Destro warlock and had no problems at all. Didn't even need to use Subjugate Demon once.

Apparently, scaling makes this much, much easier on lower level characters.

This fight is incredibly easy as a low level demonology warlock. I just popped every spell that I could, casted Demonbolt every time it procced and simply moved out of the way every time it casted Rain of Fire.

Tried this repeatedly - probably 8 or 10 times getting smeared over and over. Tried everything I've read here - nothing worked.... so then today I went back for one last go at it and the weirdest thing happened....I got close to get ready, popped buffs, demon gateway, you name it - got all ready and then engaged him....I made one - YES ONLY ONE cast of corruption seed ...and he exploded, dropping his armor. Done - just like that....I mean after repeated beatings on me suddenly he drops with one pop of seed?..what the heck?....
Bugged? I dunno but I'll take it!

Level 46 affliction warlock. As soon as the chump turned red, I just one-shot the chump with drain life, less than even half a second into the cast. From what I was reading here and on another site I expected this to be at least more of a fight so after the demon dropped I stood there for a bit, wondering if it was just some decoy demon before the real one might turn up, but no, I just basically punkslapped a demon that had taken the souls of thousands of warlocks. I guess my warlock just has a super pimp-hand or something. Yeah... I'll just pretend it's that, nothing about scaling or anything, just my warlock being the most impressive pimpgod of Azeroth.

I am highly puzzled by people posting comments where they did this quest... far before reaching level 70.
I am level 70. Poorly geared : 387 ilevel.

I have been unable to kill that daemon. I tried the subjucate method : first the felgard, then the pit lord.
Problem is my drain life DOES NOT WORK on this demon at all.

So, after having used the potion. And the health stone. My life slowly, slowly goes down.
Using the "Drain Life" gives me NO life at all. None. Zero.

So I always end up dying on this boss.

Level 43 affliction warlock with voidwalker. I have tried this now 12 times. The closest I can get him is 43%. I'm not going to bother for a while. Weird this is a "warlock quest" given at around my level and it appears impossible

I did this at level 49, affliction lok with voidwalker. I tried at level 43 and just wiped all the time. At 49 I went to Auction House and purchased the highest level greens I could get (level 242 mostly) added as many gems and item enhancements /enchants to everything favoring stamina and haste. Used drain life on the adds several times and finally killed him. Disappointing I had to 'gear up' to do this

Tried this on a newly dinged level 70 warlock that wasn't geared very well. Probably around 350 ilvl. Couldn't do much through the shield and quickly got overwhelmed by the adds and mechanics.

Then I blew all my memories on full 480, pretty much doubled my health and every stat, and was able to nuke him down in less than a minute mostly ignoring mechanics. I used a subjugate but don't think it was strictly necessary.

Level 70 Affliction Warlock alt here.
I ran on blues and greens, level 459 doing this.
Struggled with this for a while, but did a few things:

One, use your blueberry, and second, stay out of the crap.
Literally, that's it. You can make a soulstone if you like but when I realized this was my problem, I just kited him and dotted him and used Drain Life as often as possible.

Took me a few times to realize that I couldn't just stand there and take it, I hate to constantly kite and dot.

I died on my first attempt, and I had to SERIOUSLY try my hardest to stay alive, using a health stone, and using health funnel countless times. As of 25/8/24, this quest is still a challenge...at least it was as affliction; maybe it's easier in another spec? I did it at level 67... I'm impressed at how tricky it was.

TIP: If you are in the level range of 35-60, set timewalking to "Return to current timeline" You can then 1-2 shot the boss. The level will still appear as whatever level you are, but the boss will get melted as if they're any other "old world" mob". Timewalking will otherwise scale it to your level & before you have all level 70 talents, it's quite difficult.

There are a lot of recent comments about this being very difficult, almost impossible. The most important thing I can tell you having done this at Level 71. The boss hits hard and had 9M+ health.

If you are struggling with burning the boss down quickly, do the following.
- Let your voidwalker tank.
- Do not unload everything on him. If you hit too hard you will aggro.
- Also, do NOT Subjugate any of the adds. If you subjugate the adds you will gain aggro when they die.
- Drain Life, Mortal Coil, and Healthstone to maintain your health. Health Funnel to keep your voidwalker up.
- Again, at higher levels, do not subjugate. Kills the adds, stay out of stuff and slowly burn him down. It took a few minutes, but I got him down.

At level 70, 440 ilvl, this quest is impossibly difficult. None of the strategies listed here seem to work - Voidwalker tank, Subjugate the summons, etc. He just hits too hard.

Like others in the replies, I'm locked out of DMF activities on my Warlock. Hope they fix this soon!

Maybe i'm late but, go demo, take demonic healthstones, and felguard. Don't forget to funnel health into it and interrupt on occasion. I dealt 32 mil dps and i used started build talents apart from 1-2 modifications. It felt impossible

This quest is definitely scaled very, very bad!

I tried at level 70 with ilvl 480 prepatch gear and got him to about 50% on a dozen attempts. He simply hit too hard. It wasn't fun.
I then leveled through TWW and tried again at level 80 with just the bare minimum of questing gear (ilvl 546). I melted his face off! I didnt drop below 100% health at all during the fight. From stand to end it took like 5-10 seconds and was a cakewalk!

I didn't get a follow up quest right away but a letter should arrive by mail within 7 days / next reset.

Oman is located CLOSE to /way 42 72 Down the stairs, under the bridge

EDIT1: It's been 10 days. So far no mail. Waiting for Wednesday's reset.

EDIT2: After 12 days and reset on Wednesday I got the A Shady Message in the mail.

Just did this boss (05 Oct 2024) as a lvl 42 Affliction warlock, cast agony on him and he died in 2 ticks. Reading the comments beforehand I thought it would be a pain trying to do, but it must have been nerfed recently or it scales very badly at higher levels.

On a level 30 lock with 4,555 health. The October patch did change him from the skull the previously one shot me, to a level 32 with 64,804 health. AND it phases my friend on the same quest out. Party sync does not solve the phasing issue.

With timewalking turn on, Lord Banehollow was unkillable at level 38. His HP was 115k. With timewalking turned off and after asking Zidormi to set Blasted Lands to pre-invasion, Lord Banehollow's HP was higher at 126k, but damage from character abilities increased to around ten times their tooltip values when they hit him. A couple incinerates dropped him.

Like others have said, if you're still leveling in Chromie time, you can turn it off, return to the present timeline.

At level 33, I was able to get him down to 30-40% before he would kill me as destro. Drain life just wouldn't cut it and he kept ignoring my pet (even the subjugated ones) and nuking me. I found I got a lot more life draining his summoned minions than from him, but I eventually ran out of them to drain from and he would kill me.

I went and leveled some more and came back at 40 with chromie time off, returning to the present. A single conflagrate killed him.

Did this on a level 31 lock by switching to demonology... the fel guard generates WAY more threat than the voidwalker and tanked the whole fight for me. Made it actually doable.
