If you're powerleveling cooking I suggest buying these on the AH, they're usually not very expensive. If there are no eggs on the AH - go farm them in Owl Wing Thicket in Winterspring. After a few hours I have about 220 Eggs :X

At the time of completing this quest I was a level 50 warrior. After minor deliberations concerning time and level efficiency, I determined the following mobs and path was best for someone of the mentioned level to complete this quest...

At this point you can continue your short flight to Gadgetzan to complete your quest. This was mearly my method. I found this method to be very time and cost efficient for my level. While considering this, there are far more possibilities of completing this quest. I recommend everyone take a few minutes to ponder the best route for your solution to this quest.

you can kill mobs in tanaris for the eggs and clam meat. the rate is about 40% but that beats flying to hinterlands or felwood. dont know why it would be suggested to do that.

For the eggs, I just go grab them from the Roks in Tanaris. They're already there, have a decent drop rate, and are pretty much everywhere. You're already in the zone, so why not?

1) Buy the cheese wherever you want to.
2) Kill the turtles in Tanaris for the clams.
3) Kill the roks around the giant bone in Tanaris for the eggs.

4) Kill the doggies around there as well. In fact, just AOE the whole area. They drop http://www.wowhead.com/?item=12208 and this will be needed to raise your cooking skill from 225+ to 300.

I did this at 70 (mage) just so I could level up to get the blackened basilik skill.

Assuming you fish too, while you're in Tanaris be sure to head out to Steamwheedle and pick up http://www.wowhead.com/?item=13939

Spotted Yellowtail are the most common "trash" fish you'll find pre-Outland, this recipe will take you right up to 295 cooking or so, and Tanaris is the only place you can buy it.

Some of the best drop rates for the Giant Eggs are off the various 'Screechers' in Felwood. If you go there to get your eggs, be sure to get the Monster Omelet (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=16110) recipe from your factions' rep while in Felwood. It is available at Lv225 Cooking, and is a recipe calling for Giant Eggs. Might as well grab a few extra while you're farming.

You have to be lvl 45 in order to buy the cheese. I easily soloed all the mobs at 40-42 as a hunter but when I went to buy the cheese I found I had to wait until 45. I just killed the Roks in Tanaris and got the clams from killing turtles in stranglethorn. Easy quest...hope this helps.

I did this at lvl 40. Killed nagas outside Bootybay (24,63)
Then I did a /who tanaris, /who hinterlands, /who felwood and asked the ppl there if they got some Giant Eggs. Some sent me and I could do other stuff in the mean time.
The Chees i baught at the Inn Keeper in Arathi (hammerfal).

To get these all you need to do is go to the south of tanaris and farm the birds until you get all 12 eggs.

-Zesty Clam Meat
To get these all I did was go over to the shore and farm Big-Mouth Clams off of the Surf Gliders. It shouldnt take longer than 20 minutes to get.

-Alterac Swiss
This is sold by many vendors. The closest vendor to Gadgetzan is in the Caverns of time. There is a vendor who will sell the cheese inside of the Cavern. ( http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=20080 )

If you are Alliance and are power-levelling fishing and cooking in parallel, you will need to do this quest once you have reached level 225 by fishing Mithril Head Trout from outside Stromgarde Keep. Before travelling to Tanaris to pick up this quest, get everything you need to complete it from The Hinterlands just around the corner:

Giant Eggs are dropped by all of the various Owlbeasts here (42-47)
Zesty Clam Meat is inside the Big-mouth Clams dropped by Gammerita and her Saltwater Snapjaw friends on the coast (48-50)
Alterac Swiss is sold by Truk Wildbeard, the bartender in Wildhammer Keep

Now you can go up the hill to the flight point at Aerie Peak and start the journey to Gadgetzan with everything already in hand!

If you are part of Alliance - best way to farm Zesty Clam Meat is a Yong Murk Treshers just under peer in Theramore (Dustwallow marsh). They a neutral to player and there are loads of them close to each one.

I completed this quest with my lvl 40 warlock.

Farm the eggs from Rocs http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=5428 right outside Gadget. Drop rate is 35%.
Farm the zesty clam meat http://www.wowhead.com/?item=7974 from the Nagas http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=1907 while doing the Akiris by the Bundle http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=617 quest. The zesty clam meat is in the big-mouth clams http://www.wowhead.com/?item=7973 they drop.
Buy the Alterac Swiss http://www.wowhead.com/?item=8932 from Ben Trias http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=4981 on the main street heading into Stormwind trade district. It's on the right-hand side as you enter the city.

This is what I did (50 pally at the time):

- Cheese: bought from the cheese store in Stormwind. As you enter the city from the forest, it's on the right. Sign's a piece of cheese.
- Clam meat: bought it off the AH. Tried looking around for it underwater, couldn't find any, and it was cheap on the AH.
- Giant eggs: Primitive Owlbeasts in the Hinterlands. Any Owlbeast, really.

if u are like me and thought there was no use for cooking and didn't lvl it untill u started raid at 70 u probally have a good amount of money... buy all the eggs and clams on the AH and cheese from the vendor and fly down complete the quest as soon as u get it...lol... the mats are always on the AH on my server.

All the questitems can now be obtained in Taniaris, so you dont have to run all across the world for em.

- The Giant eggs, can be farmed out of Fire rocs, around the large bones in Tanaris.
- The Zesty clam meats, can be found within clams, dropped from Turtles at the coast.
- The Alterac swiss can be bought from the food and drink vendor within Caverns of time.

Total time for the quest for me ( level 61 at the time with my rogue, around 1 hour.

Unlike other cooking quests, you don't actually get the recipe for Clamlette Surprise, you just get 20 servings of it. Disappointing, for those who like to cook and be well-fed. The zesty clam meat isn't good for any other buff-giving recipes. It'd be nice if Blizzard would allow the recipe to be obtained or at least purchased.

For the record, this entire quest can be done in Tanaris. The large eggs can be obtained form the 'Fire Roc's that hang around the large skeletons in the desert. The clam meat can be gotten by beating up on the Steeljaw Snapers along the beaches (they drop clams, which when opened gives the proper clam meat), and the Swiss CAN be obtained in Tanaris. If you go to the Caverns of Time, the provisioner there stocks Alterac Swiss. No limit to the amount sold.

To collect the Giant Eggs I found this to be the best route: Map: Giant Egg Run

Start at Gadgetzan and head South to the giant dinosoar Skeleton and circle around it killing Fire Rocs.
When they're all dead, head directly North killing any Greater Firebirds and Rocs you see.
When you reach the mountain edge turn back to the dinosoar Skeleton by which time the Fire Rocs be back.

Took me around 5 "laps" killing 30ish to get all 12 Giant Eggs.

I have several toons with 375 cooking. If you keep up with your cooking while leveling, using all the mats that drop from beasts to level up, you'll reach 225 cooking well before level 40, which is the level that mobs drop giant eggs.

The fastest way to get these mats is to buy them from the AH, then when you level up and start hitting those owls in the Hinterlands or the birds in Winterspring, you can turn around, sell them back, and make up what you lost. Grinding much higher level mobs for these eggs is generally a waste of time.

You can actually fish the clams, there are two places in Tenaris, both Steamwheedle Port. One is just in the NE corner and the second one is the end of jetty . Drop rate is very good, about 85%. When I started fishing there it was on 213, after that is 220, so u can lvl your fishing there as well. I have used the Aquadynamic Fish Attractor just to catch some good fish, instead of it i got clams, all 10. It took me less than 10 mins to get them all. Nice and easy. Remember it's a contested territory.

An option not yet mentioned for the Zesty Clam Meat -- and one I just stumbled onto -- is fishing. I picked this quest up at L38 Druid with around 200 Fishing Skill and 225 Cooking. I went to Steamwheedle Port (a) to explore, and (b) tag turtles for the clam meat. The turtles ended up being a little daunting for my L38, but there was lots of fishing to be had. So, since the turtles wouldn't aggro, I just fished. Harvested all the clams I needed and then some, just by fishing. Nice. Bought the cheese. Looking for another high-30s/low 40s to help kill Rocs for the Giant Eggs. I tried laying them myself, but to no avail. I think I need Mothering 150 to do that.

I completed this quest as a lvl 44 fire mage. Large Eggs were selling for 2g each in AH and the only mobs I could solo that had decent drop rates were the Rocs. They were challenging because they resist fire spells. It took a little over an hour for me, but other classes should have no problem tearing through in half that.

There is a circle of 6 Rocs that hover outside of Gadgetzan at 50,32 and then a circle of about 9 Fire Rocs at 49,36 (the Fire Rocs have the better drop rate). By the time you wipe out one location and travel to the other, all of them have respawned. I was farming near two other players, so even players on crowded servers should find this easy. Most of the players hunting in this area are Horde, so you might want to consider taking a group if you're Alliance on a pvp realm.

Buy the cheese from whichever vendor you are near and buy the Zesty Clam Meat in AH (not all realms are the same, but it cost me only 44 silver for the 10 stack). Make the eggs the last items you collect and you'll finish the quest a short run from where you have to turn it in.

Giant eggs and meat can be found in Tanaris. Eggs are dropping from condors, that are flying near bone wastes, and meat drops from tortles an clams, that are dropping from the same tortles. And chees, you can just by it from vendors in capitals.

You can get Giant Eggs from Roc, Fire Roc, Searing Roc....

You can get Zesty Clam Meat in Zesty Clam Meat dropped by Surf #$%^&* and Elites around them....

And Alterac Swiss from Galgrom in way to dungeons in Keepers of Times....

If you level up in Booty Bay, chances are you should have more than enough Zesty Clam Meat before you pick up the quest in Tanaris.

Nearest city (which has class trainers, etc.) to Booty Bay is Stormwind, where you can buy the cheese.

With any luck, someone's selling the eggs on AH.

Therefore with proper planning you can complete this quest in short time, minimal hassle, and low cost.

Additionally, if you're farming (or being forced to farm) the eggs yourself, might help to get a bunch in stacks of 10 and list them on the AH for a quick buck.

I CANT recomend to farm the eggs in Tanaris, they drop good from the birds yes, but the birds are very few .. I used over 1½ to run around, and when i got to 6 i went crazy and went to Hinterlands where i had much more luck.

Hm I should be looking at those damn achievements before I have to actually do them.

Now I am stuck with 225 cooking and the Bloodsail Admiral title and can't do the achievement for Winter Veil which forces you to cook a recipe that needs 325 skill. Damn it :(

At least Gadgetzan is the faction with the most reputation left after getting the title and the hat. Happy Dire Maul farming to all those that feel with me ^^

This guy is a Gadgetzan one, so if you killed Booty Bay bruisers for the Bloodsail Admiral title you will have to farm a lot of reputation back to ever get over 225 cooking

You'll need 12 Giant Eggs, 10 Zesty Clam Meat and 20 Alterac Swiss. The Alterac Swiss is the easiest to get, just go to the Trade District in Stormwind City and buy it from Ben Trias. Get the eggs from the Owlbeasts in The Hinterlands (the drop rate is way better than the Rocs in Tanaris). For the clam meat go to Steamwheedle Port in Tanaris and kill the Turtles. They will drop Big Mouth Clams at a good rate, which contain Zesty Clam Meat.
Keep killing Owlbeasts in The Hinterlands and grab another 70-80 eggs. Also kill the Wolves round here for Tender Wolf Meat. Go to Talonbranch Glade in Felwood and buy the Monster Omelet recipe from Malygen and about 140-160 Soothing Spices.

The Clam Meat I got off the turtles in Tanaris. Quick killings on my 51 Hunter.
I ended up just buying the eggs off the AH - wasn't worth farming them with the lowish droprates. I'm not the patient type. xD

Innkeeper Abeqwa <Innkeeper> in Thousand Needles sells the Alterac Swiss.
Giant Egg from the Red Birds neer big bones through out Tanaris or in Winterspring from Boomking look alike at /way 65 20.
Zesty Clam Meat - land in Azhara and in the near area kill every naga and ure done in 5min. 100%.

Also 1 quick tip if u go to Winterspring get in the inn and from Himmik <Food & Drink> buy Recipe: Monster Omelet so farm 12 eggs for the quest and farm 25 more to get cooking skill from 225-250. After that visit Cooking Guide to read how to get more skill.

1. Make sure you have 225 cooking skill and level 35.
2. Buy the cheese, which can be found in many major cities.
3. Pick up the quest.
4. Start farming rocs and hyenas for Giant Eggs. They share respawn so you'll have to kill both kinds to get it done quickly. I like many others suggest the bit skeleton in the middle of Tanaris.
5. Farm some turtles for clams to get the zesty clam meat. They are found on the eastern coast of Tanaris.
6. Turn in the quest, your done.

Ofcourse, you can always visit different locations, such as hinterlands like somebody mentioned. But to get the quest done quickly I suggest not traveling, as it takes alot of time.

Doing this at level 40 as a mage, I found it much easier to hunt Vicious Owlbears than the Rocs. The Rocs were few and far between, even at the bone piles, and worse they were surrounded by 43-45 level mobs which had a tendency to wander into my fight.

After making the trip to the Hinterlands, a quick run from Tauren Mill, I found the Owlbears plentiful, easy kills and the surrounding wolves docile.

Just FYI

You do not need to pick up the pre-requisite to do this quest even though Wowhead list it as a series.

Just gather all the mats and head to Gadgetzan and you will be able to pick up this quest as long as you have cooking at 225 and are level 35 or above.

For the clam meat: if you are having trouble getting turtles there are really plenty of them at Land's End Beach. And nothing other but turtles there, so noone else wants to go there and you will allways find enough to get the meat. Helps if you can use your Hearthstone to get back fast.

As of 3.1 this quest no longer teaches you Artisan Cooking. You will need to go to the cooking trainer to learn it. Instead you learn how to make your own Clamlette Magnifique.

Also only requires 10 eggs.

Patch Notes: Players no longer need to complete the Clamlette Surprise quest to gain Artisan cooking. The quest now offers the unique recipe, Clamlette Magnifique. If you already completed the quest, you can visit Dirge Quickcleave in Gadgetzan to learn this recipe (for free).
Also You no longer need to learn cooking from books. The trainers have finally done their reading and are able to teach you the same thing.

As of patch 3.1 this quest has changed you don't need to complete it anymore to learn Artisan cooking, this can now be learned from any trainer. You can however still do the quest to which now rewards the Clamlette Magnifique recipe. If you already completed the quest return to Dirge Quikcleave in Gadgetzan and he will teach you the recipe.

While this quest does help you get a bit closer to Chef de Cuisine, it does not seem to count for Loremaster of Kalimdor.

I was killing and skinning turtles on the coast of Hinterlands for turtle scales and picked up 60 Big Mouth Clams in the process, took maybe 30 minutes. (Also got 36 turtle scales and the clams gave a black pearl, a golden pearl and two iridescent pearls).

Next time you're near a transport. Buy the cheese en-route. Done!

The rocs in the center of the desert (in the abyssal sands) drop the giant eggs. However the main place I got them was from the southern sand crawlers in Stranglethorn. Also, I can't train for master at cooking even though my cooking skill is 300, can anyone give any advice? My level is 45 if that matters. (and yes I am going to Shattrath to train, so that isn't the problem.

I had fished zesty clam meat prior to the quest. I had no recipe to cook it until I picked this up. Farmed Giant Eggs from the Rocs in the areas as suggested by Wireless and others. No need to leave the area. However, unless you kill everything around them, the Rocs will draw the other mobs into help. Fire Rocs will hit hard but use mana. The latter just seemed to spawn at will, coming out of nowhere after I had killed something else. The quest was orange for me at 41. I lost count of the times I died trying to complete it. This was the very last Cooking recipe i needed in game so I decided to go for it and comple all. I read up on it and collected all the mats for completing. I Went to IF to get the Pre-req and it didnt exist. So i figured w/e, maybe they took it out. Went to Drige with all mats and completed and he didnt take any of my mats

I think you only need 225 cooking to complete now and auto get the skill.

42.0, 63.0 in Tanaris. There is about 20 Rocs here that have a high drop rate on giant eggs.

Hope it saves you time. Cause mine was wasted, crusing around the sands on my mammoth hunting out this dammed eggs! :)

If you have my luck, your map will tell you that you can get the clam meat on the other side of the islands east of Gadgetzan. Don't be like me and spend 20 min swimming around there trying to find them. You'd be better off flying up to Azshara and fishing for them there.

As of the new patch I can't seem to get any zesty clam meat from the snapjaws and haven't gotten any clams off of them either. Killed probably 40 without a single drop.

This appears to have a disagreement between the text and the quest "checklist" when you get it - right now the text says it needs Alterac Swiss, while the checklist says Fine Aged Cheddar.

Dirge Quikcleave wants you to get the following items:

10 Giant Eggs. You will find those on the Rocs wandering Tanaris or any other species of large bird.

10 pieces of Zesty Clam Meat. You can find those in clams, naturally!

20 pieces of Alterac Swiss. Get thee to a cheesery!

Gather all of the items and return to Dirge.

Giant Egg (10)
Zesty Clam Meat (10)
Fine Aged Cheddar (20)

Sadly, I had Alterac swiss stockpiled in the guild bank :(

Post Cataclysm Note (as of Nov 29th, 2010):

Giant Eggs still drop fine off of the Fire Rocs.

CLAMS do NOT seem to drop off of the Turtles anymore. I broke down and just bought the clam meat off of the AH so I wouldn't have to figure out where to get the drops now. :P

When buying the cheese: Note that the quest description says Alterac Swiss, while the cheese required to actually complete the quest is Fine Aged Cheddar. I had glanced at the quest description and bought Alterac Swiss and had to go BACK and buy the Cheddar.

This quest is just a mess right now. :P

It seems to me that the Naga Explorers by Booty bay no longer drop the clams for zesty clam meat. I spent an hour farming them and did not get a single one. wowhead has shown me that azshara naga seem to drop the big-mouth clams that drop the zesty meat, so taht might be a better place to look now.

This appears to have been changed. It now requires 20 Fine Aged Cheddar instead of Alterac Swiss. The quest text has not been updated to reflect this change, however the quest requirements do. I don't know if this is a bug or intended.

However: This change means that the entire quest CAN be completed in tanaris :D

Ok. Finally figured out how to complete this.

- Kill Fire Rocs to get eggs.
- You get clams by FISHING near Gadgetzan. Open Big-Mouth Clam and you find Zesty Clam Meat inside.
- Buy cheese from vendor.

Fine Aged Cheddar can be purchased from innkeeper (more like tentkeeper) Carmen Ibanozzle at the Bootlegger Outpost, the flightpoint just north of Gaping Chasm.

Also, I got a pretty decent drop rate for Big-Mouth Clams from the Tidal Strider giants in the area. Had a quest to kill em anyway, so win-win!

POST-Cataclysm: My experience now suggests the drop rate to be 45-50% now. 23 kills, 12 eggs, 20 wings.

First group of Rocs killed near 40,64, killed 13 and found 7 Giant Eggs.

Second group killed near the bones at 36.5,70.5 killed 10 Rocs, found 5 Giant Eggs.

From both groups I collected 20 Buzzard Wings (they are also for another cooking recipe quest in Booty Bay).

As of 4.0.3 the quest giver "Dirge Quikcleave" has been relocated to outside (no longer in the Inn). He is beneath a canopy in Gadgetzan amongst other goblins. His appearance has also changed.

I have submitted a screenshot and am waiting for its approval.

I picked up this quest to work on my Loremaster achievement. I'm already 85 and my cooking is maxed through Wrath.
The quest asks for 20 Alterac Swiss but it shows Fine Aged Cheddar as the requirement when I go to turn in the quest.
I thought perhaps I had to use the Alterac Swiss to MAKE Fine Aged Cheddar but I cannot find the recipe on the AH, and there is no option to talk to the quest giver to MAKE the stuff with the mats the quest asks for.
What is the problem here?

As of 4.03, the quest dialogue asks for "Alterac Swiss" but the actual cheese you need is AGED CHEDDAR.

Just a quick note: the quest no longer requires Alterac Swiss it is now Real Aged Chedar, or something like that. The text of the quest however still says Alterac Swiss.

A bit mixed up this quest. Dirge Quickcleave (who used to be inside the inn) is now standing in the open air in gadgetzan (Tanaris, Kalimdor). I completed the quest with horde level 35, finding the vendor of the cheese in bootlegger outpost, (Tanaris, Kalimdor). I could not buy alterac swiss as I needed to be level 45 to do that, but I did buy the fine aged cheddar, and this enabled me to complete the quest successfully.

It's been said, but I want to re-iterate. The quest text asks for 20 Alterac Swiss, and an indicator pops up on the map to show you where(Caverns of Time) you can buy Alterac Swiss from a vendor. This is wrong.

Despite what the quest text says, you will now need 20 Fine Aged Cheddar which can NOT be found from the Caverns of Time.

Also, if you have a low level(under level 35) alt in another city like Thunder Bluff and you want to buy the cheese there and mail it, you will NOT be able to do that(I can personally confirm that as I tried to do that a couple days ago). You must be level 35+ to be able to buy Fine Aged Cheddar or it will tell you your character is too low. I thought you just had to be level 35+ to EAT the cheese, but it wouldn't let me buy it either. Is that new?

Owlkin in Hinterlands(my old favorite spot) no longer drop Giant Eggs. They now drop Small Eggs instead now that their level was lowered. I found the drop rate from the Rocs in Tanaris to be awful as always, so I went to Deadwind Pass, killed the Sky Shadows(those annoying birds that used to attack you when you ran to Karazhan) and got my 10 Giant Eggs pretty fast.

As of Cataclysm and the slight changes Taranis this quest is quite easy to complete.

I found that the Tidal Striders just South-East of Gadgetzan have a decent drop rate on the Big-Mouth Clam for the Zesty Clam Meat. There is plenty of them around and at a similar drop rate to the Steeljaw Snapper mentioned above I believe them an easier solution.

The Fine Aged Cheddar can be bought from Carmen Ibanozzle the Innkeeper at Bootlegger Outpost, which is just a short flight south to about 56,59.

Sorry I don’t have any advice to offer the eggs, I bought mine off AH.

All this said, I suggest buying everything off the AH before you accept the quest so you can turn it in immediately. Hope that helps a bit :) Happy Hunting

The recipe apparently changed. It's now fine aged cheddar that you need, not the swiss. It took me forever to find a vendor that had it. Finally found one in Thunder Bluff with the Innkeeper Pala near the bank.

If you have the quest markd' as completed, the friendly rep and you can't complete it... make sure u have all the mats in your *bags*. Had some eggs on my bank because of cookiin, they 'count' for the quest but coul't deliver it because of that.

For that cheese, my lvl 47 goblin just rode his trike down into the Caverns of Time cave until he hit the first little settlement. In the first building on the left was an orc, Galgrom the Provisioner, who sold me the cheese. No problems, no fights, no level issues.

ERROR! Damn it, I wasted my money on Alterac Swiss :-( Still looking for the Fine Aged Cheddar. I couldn't enter the Dark Portal (minimum level 65).

NOT Alterac Swiss! I went all the way down into Caverns of Time to buy that from an orc supplier, and it was the wrong stuff. You want Fine Aged Swiss. For Horde Cordelia Everseek sells it far to the WSW of Tanaris, beyond the Valley of the Watchers, at the Dawnrise Expedition location (33,77 or so).

The Rocs aren't too bad at dropping giant eggs either, I just collected them while toodling around on other quests (butcherbot, etc.).

I thought it was sending me to the bottom end of Lost Rigger Cove...still, just buy the cheese from the goblin "woman" (gak) @ Bootlegger Outpost, flypoint just to the SE.

Best place to farm for the clam meat is Land's End Beach. The western part of it is still swarming with turtles.

I completed this quest easily on my rogue without ever leaving Tanaris. Make sure that you complete Butcherbot first so that you can move on to the second part. This will make farming the Rocs much more convenient. Also make sure that you pick up the quests Seaside Salvage and Puddle Stomping since the giants you kill have roughly a 30-40% drop rate (this is from my own personal experience) for Big-Mouth Clam.

In order to obtain the cheese simply fly to Bootlegger Outpost in the southern part of Tanaris. The innkeeper Carmen Ibanozzle is a seller of various cheeses, including Fine Aged Cheddar!

Things changed, so a small guide:

Exit Gadgetzan south. Go past the docked wreck and make sharp left. Tidal Strider wander in the shallows, they drop Big-Mouth Clam which contains the Zesty Clam Meat
To the west you'll see some giant bones sticking out of the sand. Fire Roc spawn around the bones. They drop the Giant Egg
Carmen Ibanozzle sells the Fine Aged Cheddar she's at the northern tip of the Gaping Chasm. Visible to the south (the curved upside down insect legs)

Took me 20 kills to get 2 zesty clam meats (came down with 8). Definately recommend getting your meat ahead of time. Low drop rate and the turtles in Tanaris are very spread out and most are underwater.

The quest now requires 20 Fine Aged Cheddar and not 20 Alterac Swiss. I wish the built in quest helper was fixed because it still points to Galgrom for the cheese but he doesn't have the correct cheese anymore.

I finished this quest today (11/26) and you can get the Big-Mouth Clam from the Tidal Strider Giants. I killed every turtle for two hours, not a complete loose cause I am a skinner too, and received nothing. I got the Giant Egg just fine from the Fire Roc's. And the cheese you can get by flying to Bootlegger Outpost and talk to Carmen Ibanozzle <Innkeeper>

There are A LOT of comments here about this quest but I did not read anywhere that mentions the fact that the Southsea Pirates by Lost Rigger Cove drop Fine Aged Cheddar. Sure you can still buy them but why not get a few for free? And in addition you may buy them from Rations Officer Flexgear at Steelspark Station (50, 82) just north of Land's End Beach.

If Dirge doesn't offer you the quest after you hit level 35, be sure your Cooking skill is at least 225 (and that you've trained for Artisan). Just happened to me (had trained Artisan, but skill was only 219).

Big Mouth Clams (source of Zesty Clam Meat) do not drop where the quest map says they do. Instead, go down to Land's End Beach (southernmost shore of Tanaris) and kill Surf Gliders (turtles, don't ask me why turtles drop clams).

Doing this in 2019:

Get the eggs from Fire Rock birds by the big skeletons in the desert.
Get the clam meat from the giant humanoid Tidal Striders outside town.
Get the cheese from the vendor at the flight point near caverns of time, at Bootlegger outpost.

The map will mark areas where turtle are for the clam meat but the striders are better.

Zesty Clam Meat and Giant Egg can be bought from the Gadgetzan AH (post Cata this is now the general AH shared between Horde and Alliance) for around 3g a piece.

Alternatives for the clams are to take the quest to kill Tidal Strider who also drop Big-Mouth Clam (the turtles have around a 1 in 5 drop rate - only useful if you have a swimming mount and/or are a skinner). I didn't try going up to Thousand Needles as the mobs such as Siltwash Terrapin now scale with your character up to level 40.

For the eggs, Fire Roc still drop them.

I just did this quest today, and it's not clear in what to kill but for Giant egg kill the fire rocs, for the Zesty clam meat you need to kill the turtles I found these very low in supply but eventually got enough. The cheddar you can buy at merchant near the next town in Taranis.(bootlegger outpost, coordinates: 55, 60

I went to do this quest today and it just auto-completed and gave me the recipe!

I brought out another toon that had high vanilla cooking, and the quest activated like normal.

I can only assume I had all the ingredients needed in my bag. But I've never seen a quest just skip the turn-in step!
