New as of 9/12: After you finish the level 50 intro quests in the Maw and get ported to Oribos, you're given the Frozen in Place debuff. The world is grayscale, and Fatescribe Roh-Tahl appears with the Threads of Fate dialog choice. You have to pick your leveling path to continue.

Do you have to run through the whole story 4x (plate/mail/leather/cloth) to get all the armor transmogs? Or if you do the threads of fate will you get the quest related transmogs?

So good you came here looking for info, let’s see the difference btw both ways.

The first time you level up you follow a guided way. You don’t choose. Is like a campaign that you do in a tour visiting for a short time every map in shadowlands. You visit the maps in a determinate order and once in each map you only do that chain questline. This means that you only have one-two quest actives most of the time. All the rest of the quest that exists in the map are not showed for you, are not available for you.
Is not a bad idea because makes you be focused and reach the “end” faster, because you don’t pick side quest by mistake that steals you time from the main story. You just are send to the map, do the questline (3-4hours) that is basically an introduction to that map and to that covenant, then you are send back to Oribos and again send to the next map. Once you see all maps and do a couple of dungeons you should be already 60 so you choose your covenant (faction) and all the other stuff is then available to you.
The idea is to give you a full perspective in order to be able to choose your covenant at the end.

This default system is not bad for level alts, is fast and safe but after some times will be really boring yeah.
I say is safe because the chain questline is easy and is done in the safe part of each map. Because as far as I already saw, each map has a “star zone” where mobs scale with your level and the rest of the map (more than 50%) where mobs are directly level 60 always.

The “free” leveling system will make you possible to don’t level all alts with the same route and that will make it less bored, yeah.
After you hit level 60 with your first character and finish the first chapter of your covenant quest line, once you complete the Maw introduction and arrive in Oribos with next characters, you're Frozen in Place , and offered the quest The Threads of Fate (this doesnt work with characters that were already level 60). In this quest, you get to decide how will you level in Shadowlands on your alt.
Also if you choose the “free” leveling system and you know which covenant you will choose since the beginning, will allow you to focus while leveling into that map, doing all the quests there and that will help you a lot because you will get reput (because world quests will be available for you in this mode) and you will know the map well and gain resources (anima, etc, due to world quests). This is important because your covenant will “force” you to do a lot of stuff in the map linked to that covenant.
The “main storyline” will be flagged for you as done, so you wont find those quest but you can continue the campaign since the same point that your first character took after hitting 60 and choosing covenant .

IMPORTANT THINGS TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION
Both alternatives has pro´s and cons, lets see some.

When you are in DEFAULT you are phased (I why most of the quests in maps are hidden to you), and this is very important mostly in the first weeks because it will be a lot of people leveling and that means that quest type kill 10 mobs or loot 10 items gonna be hard to complete due to the overpopulation (and there is a lot of this kind of quests yeah).
So, if everyone choose to go FREE MODE just since they ding 60 with their first toon, and you continue in DEFAULT, you wont meet all those grinders in your way while leveling and doing your quests xDDDD.
When you are in FREE mode, you can focus into your covenant, start grinding anima, leveling your followers, gaining reputation, use the traits for professions etc.
But even if you can straight focus, this will become a catch up system? Will make you improve faster?. Its not a sure thing.
Leveling for example could be less repetitive but also slower. All the experience from the main introductory questline that is flagged for you as done, that experience is a lot, and is lost for you.
You are forced to level with side quests and world quests. Quest only from your covenant map wont be enough, so you will to end visiting the other maps as in default mode. Put in mind that spamming dungeons is not as great as it was in other expansions in order to level up. Also your map will be more populated than in default mode as you will have all the other players leveling in free mode and also all the max level players, and you will be doing the same quests they do, and those quests to kill 10mobs I did before easy and fast now… well, I took 3or4 more time to do each single thing. Found myself in small zones with 50 boars where I should kill 10 but it was another 50 players around, so imagine, the horrible “we know” experience about competition into tag the mob.

MY EXPERIENCE: And is only an opinion, and if blizzard introduce changes this could also change over the expansion (in fact the system changed a lot just in the beta).
My experience is that the Free system was not a speed up or catch up system. It took me the same or maybe even a bit more time to level up to 60, and the “advantage” into my covenant was not a big advantage. So is just a different way to level, that’s all, in order to don’t become bored.
I play all classes and some twice so I will end choosing FreeMode but not after the first character.

Because remember, after you choose FreeMode, you cant come back to the default system.

The Threads of Fate didnt pop on my alt after the maw intro. I have lvl 60 with covenant...is it a bug or am i missing pre requisite ?

You need to finish the first chapter of your covenant quest line (the ones to unlock WQ...etc) to unlock this.

Once you arrive at Oribos after finishing the maw intro quest, you will be the target of Frozen in Place
Then Fatescribe Roh-Tahl will give the this choice.

I have one account for me and another for my son that plays with me.
I hit 60 and the quest poped for my alts and also for his main (I didn't expect that), but that's interesting.

Characters who already reached level 60 can no longer skip the campaign, even if another character already finished all requirements. It's a level tool and as such must be used before reaching level 60.

Fatescribe will no longer offer the skip as soon as a character reaches level 60. This is working as intended.

After you choose ToF you will receive transmog (quest armor and quest weapons) for your alt's associated gear. Leveled on a Mage and my ToF DH received leather xmog and associated reward weapons (glaives, etc.) I received these after I chose ToF and logged out / back in. Also received achievements for all covenant storylines.

For those stuck like me (not being able to get this quest on my alt) you have to proceed, on your main, until you get the quest that asks you to do 3 world questions for your covenant. For my Kyrian Warrior, it was A Calling in Bastion.

WARNING: If you arrive in Oribos and accept this quest, DO NOT LOG OUT BEFORE COMPLETING IT. The quest will auto complete and force you into the "normal" leveling experience. You will not be given a choice and are not able to abandon the quest to change your option to the "alternate" leveling experience.

This just happened to me on my fresh level 50 alt. I opened a ticket and hopefully this will be resolved. I have no desire to complete the campaign normally a second time.

EDIT: Thankfully you can find the quest giver again (Fatescribe Roh-Tahl) in Oribos and he will let you change your decision, it just doesn't tell you that clearly. Check your map and he will have a little dialogue bubble I freaked the !@#$ out and thought I was stuck.

Couple of things maybe not mentioned made choosing Threads of Fate a no brainer for me.

The first is that dungeon loot doesn't scale to your level when playing through the story. At level 54-55 playing through the Necrotic Wake, you still get iLVL 98 (level 51) loot. Also you are not able to queue for dungeons that your level is too high for, until you hit 60.

The second is that your quest exp gets nerfed if you are too high a level for the zone. For example I was level 55 heading out of Bastion into Maldraxxus, and my quest exp dropped by 3k. I'm assuming this is so that you dont hit 60 until you finish the storyline.

Lastly, choosing ToF allows you to easily gear to your level from world quests, as they are available all over the place, dungeon loot scales to your level, and you can begin your covenant and stocking up on anima.

Level 50 BM hunter, fully charged xp bonus, WM off, no heirlooms. After the Maw intro I replayed the normal sequence, Bastion > Maldraxxus > Ardenweald using only campaign quests, plus a few side quests to clear level gates in Bastion and Ardenweald. Ended Day 1 halfway through 57 with xp bonus depleted.

Day 2, finished Ardenweald 1/4 of the way through 58. Unlocked Revendreth portal, map and flight points in about 35 minutes, then went to Oribos, took the Threads of Fate and used bonus objectives and world quests to finish leveling. Once you choose Threads of Fate and enter each zone, all four automatically give a separate meta-quest to aid the covenant in that zone in exchange for 72,000 xp, 408 gold and an ilevel 138 weapon for your spec, plus a follow-up quest called Return to Oribos from each covenant, for a total of four extra Renown levels.

I forgot to /played at the start so I can't say precisely how long this method took, but even with a bit of gating it proved highly efficient. Going from 50 to 60 can be done on a weekend as dps. Doing it this way got me through a bunch of levels quick, let me choose the optimum time to get started with the Night Fae, and turbocharged my covenant campaign progress and Renown leveling (six chapters completed and Renown level 19 just a week after hitting 60).

One downside to note: I reached 60 at 250 Neutral with the Ascended, Harvesters, and Undying, and at 0 Neutral with the Court of Night, so this isn't a good way to get an early start on grinding rep.

A common question here appears to be. If I use the skip option do I still get all the transmog appearances?

From what I've read, probably.

There are several people saying they didn't get it but they also don't say they logged out then in and also didn't say they hit refresh on their collection.

What I found. I made a class trial druid and choose the skip ahead option. Then on my normal druid I started the bastion story line normally. When I got to the first piece of leather gear it offered me it said I hadn't collected it but when I went back to the class trial druid (w/o completing the quest) I did find that piece in the transmogrifier interface. So I think you do learn them (but it's not account wide unless the character is not on a class trial.)

I have an alt that chose Threads of Fate, but did not complete the "Choosing Your Purpose" quest to choose a covenant. I saw that the flight paths were open in the realms and decided to level her crafting, starting with fishing and cooking. I flew to Bastion, and the quest to aid Bastion popped up when I entered the Zone. I can see all of the world quests and Sojourner quests for the areas, without choosing a covenant. When I entered Bastion, the 2 extra talents popped up to add to the action bar. I plan on leveling the alt by questing without making the covenant decision, as I am not getting much reward from the alts that have made this choice already. I can see that postponing the choice to later may be more attractive, due to talent and covenant re-balancing. Does anyone have any input on what I may miss by not making a covenant decision at the beginning?

Edit on 2/5/21: At the end of each realm, you get a quest to return to Orbis and the quest rewards a level of Renown with your chosen covenant.

With the current state of the game, world quests are "few" compared to legion and you will likely end up seeing 3 (maybe 4 per day if you do pet battles) during your time in Threads of Fate. With the low amount of actual world quests, all that remains is killing hundreds of enemy mobs to complete bonus objectives. It's a bit of a grueling experience, especially in Ardenweald, and so much so that I wish I had just redone the story line.

The Threads of Fate choice has this bit of text, which could cause a bit of confusion:

You will have access to all Shadowlands zones except the Maw.

You won't have access to the Maw while leveling, but you'll get access to the Maw after you reach level 60, via a campaign quest.

I also made the mistake of logging out before choosing, only to have it pick one when i logged back in.
However Fatescriber Roh-Tahl is on the other side of the city as described, so i went go there to choose/change.

I was finding the description of each option confusing, which is the "normal mode" and which is "free mode" ?
But when i finally went to see Roh-tahl and chose "I want to speak to you about the threads of fate", you get a prompt that says, "I am ready to choose".
It is there you get a clearer picture of which option to choose, even with pictures!
FYI - I chose "The threads of fate" as I'd done the story line twice already.

ToF has been redesigned in 9.1.5 and honestly, as it is now, I doubt any other form of leveling is better for casual leveling (WR and speedrun leveling is another layer entirely). What I do on new alts now:

Buy a Broker Mark of Distinction on my main and send it over.
Finish the Maw intro. It can be skipped, but with rested xp and War Mode it gives over a level in a ~25min experience that I know start to finish now.
Accept ToF, choose a Covenant I'm mostly likely to play in the endgame, use Broker Mark of Distinction.
ToF order: start with Torghast, as the run will likely reward a Renown at 40.
Then I go to Bastion, getting the Necrotic Wake quest and doing all bonus objective for 6 or 7 Renown (dungeon, 5x bonus, Return to Oribos).
Repeat this process for Maldraxxus, Ardenweald and Revendreth.
As for dungeons: you can get the Wake, Plaguefall and Mists quests (almost) directly. Halls requires the Halls of Atonement chain but this is otherwise efficient for Reinforcing Revendreth.
If I'm still not 60 I start queuing for BGs to finish ToF, otherwise repeat doing daily Torghasts for bonus xp and Renown.

If you remember to get Broker Mark of Distinction straight away, do all bonus objectives and dungeon runs as you finish zone quests, you end up around lv59.5 and Renown 70 with one Covenant.

So am I missing something? I have a 63 hunter that I'd like to do threads of fate on to skip Sl campaign, but Fatescribe Roh'Thahl, only has the "what's your purpose?" Option when found in East Oribos. And yes I have completed the leveling campaign on other characters, and skipped to cov selection on a few different alts. Most threads I find are about leveling alts, or first arrival at Oribos.

As of right now it seems that The Threads of Fate is only available for characters who chose to skip the Shadowlands prelude. Once you go through the prelude without skipping, the game stun locks you into the full campaign, you'll have to finish the campaign in its entirety to get to covenants and so forth.

Which is really sad - I didn't skip the prelude on my alts because it's good for speed leveling and remembering the zone... And I leveled my alts specifically to get to covenants and have a specific RP alt on every covenant. And now I'll have to go through the full campaign 2 more times just to get to the covenants. At which point I'll probably won't even want to do the covenants anymore due to burnout.

Ok, so I have a Lvl 53 Shaman, just entered Shadowlands (skipped the Maw intro), my primary is a lvl 70 Pally, that did Shadowlands up to Covenant (doing the dailys), but no "The Threads of Fate" quest from Fatescribe Roh-Tahl.

I have seen people say you have to finish the first chapter of your Covenant quests, but any idea at what that point that is?

Nevermind. The Threads of Fate quest has been removed, due to Shadowlands now being part of Chromies time shifts.

So just to confirm what others have said: you can still start 'The Threads of Fate' in certain circumstances but possibly only at level 60. From my experience I had a bunch of toons that were in the middle of threads of fate at prepatch and they were able to continue to level to 60 through ToF fine (and as intended by Blizzard). I also had 2 that were somewhere in the 40s 1 Ally one Horde and in the middle of Chromie time.

I've since levelled them to 60 (in Chrome time) but wanted to be able to go to Oribos to pick up professions. My undead mage was OK as he could learn the portal anyway so just used that method. My human rogue couldn't get there though so had to go get the breadcrumb quest fro Shadowlands. Once at the quest giver I was able to skip the Maw (straight away) which was nice but I thought I'd still need to do full campaign after the Maw once I got to Oribos (if I did want to do more content than just professions). But then it turned out I was offered the ToF option so picked that just so I could get shapeshift for speed around Oribos.

But it does look like from what I've seen elsewhere that if you don't skip at that very first opportunity you can't skip at one of the later points. But still good news for those wanting to take alts to Shadowlands for whatever reason.

If you already chose Threads of Fate, do not choose Chromie Time's Shadowlands - Realms of Death. If you do switch to Realms of Death while Threads of Fate is active, you will retain most of the features of Threads of Fate, but you will lose access to World Quests until level 60.

This article is inherently false. I literally just got prompted w/ threads of fate on a fresh dracthyr upon arrival in Oribos for the first time. I got to choose my fate, my covenant and even got a skip for Zereth Mortis. However, my other max level characters did not get this option. I have completed the campaign on my main. My first level 70 alt didn't get the prompt at all. My 2nd level 70 alt SOMEHOW, acquired the quest "the call of fate" without ever getting the threads of fate follow up.

So I have a ticket in. They're probably going to shine me on. This doesn't even seem remotely fair or right, especially considering what their support article states.

There's still a way to get this on your characters that otherwise couldn't. Whether that's because they entered Oibos through the portal or chose to Replay the Storyline and forgot to switch before the pre-patch happened, etc.

You'll need a friend to create an allied race toon (so they can get the quest Shadowlands: A Chilling Summons|Shadowlands: A Chilling Summons ).
What you need to do is go to the location in Oribos, shown in the map above and wait there.
Once the two things above are completed, have your friend choose Shadowlands for chromie time. This allows them to obtain the quest mentioned above
Then they go to the NPC to skip the Maw intro, which puts them right in Oribos - the same location you are at.
Invite them to your party and enable Party sync. This will stun you in place, just like before, and Fatescribe will approve you providing you with this quest.

Now you're free to skip Shadowland's storyline and continue on like before!

Guys, I chose to play through the campaign thinking that I could switch to threads of fate at any time through Roh-Tahl, but he doesn't give me the option anymore!

Did I %^&* up? I swear it said you can switch to threads if you change your mind in the quest text.

I think I have this figured out. If you have gone through the whole campaign on one toon:
1. If you level an alt all the way up to 60, then accept the summons to Oribos, Fatescribe Roh-Tahl will rush up to you just after you teleport and give you this quest to choose your path.
2. If you go to Oribos between levels 50 and 59 and do intro quests, but DO NOT GO TO the MAW, then leave and level up to 60, then go back to Oribos, Roh-Tahl will not be there, BUT he will be on the far eastern side of Oribos and offer you this quest. Then you can skip the campaign and do world quests.
3. It looks like if you do the Maw intro, then come back to Oribos at 60, you are hard-wired into the campaign mode. (Unconfirmed, but seems like it).
Point is, do not do the full maw intro. If you do go to Oribos before L60, then come back, try to find Roh-Tahl at the eastern side of Oribos. If he doesn't offer you the quest... yeah, it looks like you're out of luck.

Alfa's comment should be upvoted to oblivion. If you don't have a friend that can help you, just create a second free trial account tied to your Bnet account.

Explained in simpler words:

1. Park your main in Oribos (right between the two portals).
2. Open a second client and log in to your second free trial account. Make a character (preferably in the same realm as your main) and level it up to 10 (or create an allied race character).
3. With your main, invite your alt character to a party (trial accounts can't invite other players).
4. With your alt character, accept the quest Shadowlands: A Chilling Summons, go to the questgiver and choose the option to skip the Maw introduction.
5. Your alt character will be teleported to Oribos - now, with your main, open up the Quest log and click on Party Sync at the bottom.
6. Accept the petition on your alt character.
7. Change back to your main and, voilà, Fatescriber will ask you to choose between Fates of Thread or replay.

Is it possible to disable Threads of Fate on an old toon that started it during SL?

I know the option to start TOF is gone, but I can rapidly quest, with flying, through Bastion/Maldraxxus to hit 60 and start Dragonflight. Part of the reason I never finished leveling the toon was because of how bad TOF was during the expansion, so I'm wondering if I can get out of it now.

Would like to add to the workaround, that ToF does it fact still exist for newly created lv60+ without the workaround. On a newly created monk I decided to check for Sandworn Relic gear after dinging 60: I skipped the Maw intro and instantly got offered the ToF inquiry. So technically this has not been removed, it's just unavailable for Chromie Time. Be wary to trigger SL if you don't intend to do the campaign (which, with all due respect, you shouldn't if you've done it before). I'm not sure what it does for lv50s going here out of Chromie Time.

i read this and some of the comments i still dont care after 6 different toons why do they decide now to take out threads of fate yes they removed it.i know because i was helping a friend and we ran into this and had to look it up outside that garbage forum.it was removed in one of the ten point whatever patches .it's one thing to like grinding and slogging through old content it's another when you are doing more than one alt for whatever reason.that's the reason so many have turned to the 70 boost because nothing before that matters at all.but yet you took out one of the biggest skips for content a lot of people didn't like shaowlands to begin with i liked shadowlands it was cool but im not doing legion and shadowlands bs everytime i make a new toon or lvl an alt.i only have alts for those professions and yes they all need to be current lvl.whoever is making the choices on where this game goes after what's happening in the last 5 or 6 years i hope you change the way that company thinks because a lot of the player base is getting real tired of some of those stupid changes you keep making.

Just did some experimenting with Threads of Fate. I leveled 2 warriors from 54-60 and a third warrior from 53-61, a mage from 56-61, and a rogue from 54-60 in the past 2 weeks. The ones that I stopped at 60 were able to go to Roh-Tahl directly (he didn't come to me) and get Threads of Fate. The two that went to 61 before returning to Roh-Tahl were unable to get Threads of Fate. The warrior that I took to 61 I was able to get Threads of Fate at level 60, but I chose to not take it at the time to see if it did indeed vanish at 61. It did. I was not able to pick up Threads of Fate prior to level 60 either when arriving in Oribos originally or from Roh-Tahl directly. I also opted to do the Maw intro on every toon rather than going straight to Oribos. My rogue was the only one who didn't have Chromie Time enabled until after the Maw intro was completed since I didn't realize it wasn't enabled until my xp dropped like a rock and I noticed the mobs turned grey. A level 70 toon I had that was boosted from 50-60 using the Shadowlands level 60 boost did not have Threads of Fate although I had leveled her to 70 before checking. Another toon I boosted from 50-70 with the Dragonflight boost also did not have access to Threads of Fate, and I'm (slowly) taking her through the Shadowlands campaign.

Seems Threads of Fate is still available but really only if you're level 60 without doing extra work that many may not know or want to do. I didn't experiment with skipping the Maw intro and going straight to Oribos nor did I experiment with a toon lower than 53 as most of my toons I leveled 50-53 or 54 using Winter Veil and Love is in the Air. I did level a paladin from 10-60 this past month as well using Shadowlands via Chromie TIme, but I finished the leveling campaign at 60 so had no need to see if she could get Threads of Fate. She could pick her covenant fine at 60. Roh-Tahl also did not come to her when she initially arrived at Oribos.

Gating a major feature of Shadowlands behind the leveling campaign really makes this expansion one of the worst ones. Threads of Fate shouldn't become unavailable (without workarounds) once you hit 61+. Hopefully this is fixed in The War Within. Otherwise, perhaps they can make an item you can buy off the vendor by the Oribos flight path to immediately skip the leveling campaign jumping you right to covenant selection. Make that available once you complete a covenant campaign on at least one toon maybe much like how you can only buy the item to get 60 renown with a covenant once you get high enough on another toon.

In case this is helpful for others: I took a lvl 70 to Oribos (skipping the Maw intro) and was given the Threads of Fate quest. Upon choosing the Threads of Fate, you are NOT awarded the achievements for doing the main questlines in each of the four main zones, which gets you halfway to Loremaster of Shadowlands. Maybe this is obvious for everyone else, but I couldn't find anyone mentioning it, and I wanted to know because I hadn't taken my achievement toon through the first time around so I was unclear if it would screw up getting Loremaster on her. Since choosing ToF means you are skipping those main quests, it would appear to me that yes, it will screw up acquiring Loremaster if you're going for it on a specific toon. Something to keep in mind.

Moral of the story: be careful with character boosts. I missed the entirety of Shadowlands and finally got around to using the lvl 60 boost I had lying around. The character was awarded all four of the main storyline quest achievements for Shadowlands. This, in turn, appears to have enabled the ToF quest to show up for my other characters, which is a problem since the info on this site about that quest is not terribly clear as of DF in terms of how it works. If you're an achievement hunter who hasn't gotten around to doing Shadowlands, but used a 60 boost, beware of choosing the ToF option. I don't know if the lvl 70 boost that is now available has the same effect or not.

Works all the way up to level 80!

My level 80 pandaria timerunner was given threads of fate upon entering Shadowlands for the first time. Just make sure you do it via the starting quest in Org/Storm.

Quest is currently BUGGED on 11.0.5, there is no follow-up for the fatescribe npc, you just get a grey screen and there is nothing you can do. If you logout there is no option to skip the sl campaign anymore, meaning your character is forever %^&ed with no access to sl raids unless you redo the whole campaign. GG bLizzard
EDIT: its not bugged, the campaign skip was actually removed as per https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/277497, so yeah....
