This quest can be completed in two ways:

1. Opening cages in the maw which may require cypher of extrication (as of early beta, these cages were purple and did not require the item but may on live)

2. Get "Soul Stabilizer" items, rarely dropped from elites and assassins in the maw, and then rescue souls in torghast runs.

Note that while there are many soul looking entities in the maw, the vast majority of these do not (as of early beta) count toward quest progress.

You Rescue Souls from the Maw by opening cages and looting "Soul Stabilizer" from elite rares & assasins (lvl 3), and by recue souls in torghast tower.

good location for cages is around /way 28,4, 17,6

About the cages: if you and another player click on the "Caged Soul", the progress will count for all.

When I had this quest (in the beta), on the map (in-game, not on this site) the area marked was not the actual area where I have found the souls. I found that the locations suggested on this page by other posters were good spots to find them. The souls that I have found were inside "stone prisons" - which can be DPSd down, and then a soul will be released at your location which can be clicked on.

Does anyone know if this quest is working? I'm current US Moon Guard, Chapter 2 completed for my Covenant campaign, and working on the "Replenish the Reservoir". I do not see this quest available nor a way to see if I have completed the quest already....

As of 12/01/20 on NA.

Ignore the quest marker. Run over the first hill in the Maw and down to the forge area. There will be light blue runes on your minimap. These lead to stones that can be attacked. Break the stones and click the soul npc that spawns. Collect 5.

Takes about 5 minutes with this method.

DO NOT use the quest objective marker on the map for this quest. The imprisoned souls can be found directly west of Ve'nari's Refuge in the Stone Prisons.

To complete his quest you have to

Go to the Maw from Ring of Transference in Oribos
There are several types of souls you can save. You will see a blue mark on your minimap in Maw:

Imprisoned Soul (<= map inside) the closest to the Ve'nari base
Destroy the rocks to free them Demo video 1:27
Caged Soul (<= map inside) all over the maw, but most of them are to the north of main Ve'nari base Demo video 2:00
Wailing Soul / Aimless Soul (<= map inside) are also to the north but instead of cages
They are moving randomly and fearing everyone from time to time. Demo video 3:12

Hi all

I get this Weekly Quest from Soulguide Daelia from My Covenants ( I Think You should have same ).

On This Weekly Quest You need to Rescue Souls in the Maw Best spot to get them 33 44 That can take even 5 min, souls are mark on minimap line small ghosts ( on mini map is showing 45 56 but don't go there and behind bridge to ease to die xD anbd is very low number of souls - i don't know why Blizzard mark this quest over there xD)

5 Souls - 1-14 Renown
10 Souls - 15-23 Renown
15 Souls - 24-31 Renown
20 Souls - 32+ Renown

So... is 5 souls the max per week we will ever be able to get? Looking at some of the anima upgrades... 5 weeks of soul gathering for each the higher upgrades. Just hoping to confirm that's accurate.

I am unable to claim credit for saving souls in The Maw for "Return Lost Souls". I have tried dropping the quest and picking it back up and disabling addons. I am not in a raid. I do not even have the option of clicking on the cages when I mouse over them and when I break the stone prisons and right click the souls, I get no credit. I have not changed covenants at all. I have been unable to complete this quest since the first week it was available. I put in a ticket and Blizzard replied with the above "suggestions" but were too busy to address a quest related ticket directly.

Although the quest turn-in text says "take the portal to Oribos" you actually turn this quest in at your Covenant.

I found as a demonology warlock that I had to set my pets to passive and damage the Stone Prisons only with direct damage spells, otherwise the souls would not spawn once the stone was destroyed, and there was nothing to release in order to claim quest credit. I was also able to release souls that spawned after other players destroyed the stone prisons.

Edit: ~~Oddly, I don't recall having any similar issues with my hunter pets.~~ Similar problem with Hunter pets, easier to get in the killing blow perhaps?

I've noticed while on my BM hunter the past couple weeks that the souls almost never spawn from the stone prisons, even though the minimap shows a soul in it, unless I dismiss my pet BEFORE I attack the stone prison. I think it's a bug because I never see this on any other class I've done it on (none of which are pet classes), and another BM hunter noticed the same thing. At least if I dismiss pet first and the stone prison is surrounded by mobs, I can stand off and attack it without aggroing anything else and the soul spawns near me. Anyone notice this with other pet classes?

There's these soul-draining guys there and they seem to be unkillable? Like I can't damage them at all, but they kill me in 4 hits on my pally. Any ideas?

I attained 15 reknowned this week after I had picked up the quest. I abandoned the quest, went and did a few world quests and came back and picked it up and it adjusted to 10 souls to rescue. Seems long as you pick up the quest after the 15 reknowned you can get the upgrade and not have to wait another week.

Fast & Easy Quest for Level 60 Shadowlands.

1. Stand at 38, 40 in the Maw, behind the furnace thingy.

2. DPS down the soul rocks that spawn to the left or right of you, and the souls should show up right beside you.

3. You will finish the quest in no time as these respawn pretty quickly. Enjoy.

4. ?

5. Profit. Quest Completed Efficiently & Effectively.

Goto 35.88,43.43 on Zovaal's Cauldron. Stand facing the furnace. There should be two stone prison spawning one after another. Just keep killing it to collect lost souls. You should be able to collect 15-20 souls in 5 minutes.

This is such a poorly done quest.

- First it's one of the few ways to up your Renown with your covenant, so it's an important quest (it only gives you renown if you're behind now).
- Second, it's one of the few ways to get Redeemed Soul. This weird currency won't show up in your currency tab, you have to go to the Sanctum Upgrade person in your Covenant to see it. This currency also has a max limit of 100. This currency is only used for upgrades.

The weird part of this quest is that as part of your renown, certain renown levels will raise the amount of souls you can get (and of course the Redeemed Soul you get from the quest). What I don't understand is why I would want this to happen? The more souls I need to get the longer this quest takes me and the more the Eye of the Jailer is affected by this quest. I'm definitely not burning through Redeemed Soul very fast at all, because of the huge amounts of anima needed for the upgrades. I would much prefer this quest stayed at the original level (5).

What's really going to annoy me is I'm going to hit that Redeemed Soul max level (100) and this will be a complete waste of time for me. Yet I'll need to do it for the Renown.

Extremely poor design imo.

Edit: And now it's up to 20. So ignoring the lazy design and the sheer boringness of doing this quest. If you try and do this with the 3 dailies that Ve'nari puts up you're almost guaranteed to get your Eye of the Jailer up to max. Which means you'll race to get those last souls before you die. It's kind of funny, all you see now in The Maw are a bunch of ppl running around getting souls trying to do this idiocy. I mean really, how much do these game designers get paid?

Edit2: So Blizz fixed this so that if you are at your limit of Redeemed Soul it will give you 500 anima instead. But as I'm writing this, it's bugged for some of my toons. So some (no idea why) will get the quest reward of Redeemed Soul even though they are maxed out on it, while others will get the 500 anima.

Edit3: Somewhere along the line Blizz made it so that the souls you pick up in Torghast count towards this (though weirdly if you get them from a power node it doesn't count). So if you need to go to Torghast pick up this quest and get both done (or at least mostly done).

The screenshot shows a good place to farm the souls. There are two next to each other. Just go back and forth they spawn almost instantly in a medium pop server. You do not have to wander around!

Thanks/due to the mechanics adjusting to the player count in the maw, the spawn rates of the Souls seem to be heightened when...

Therefore:

I'd recommend turning WM off and doing it around some kind of "prime time"
(whether that's around or past noon or early evenings to midnight-ish "new waves of players doing it" ... times)

Quite more often it happens that you can see 2 adjacent souls from the same spawning spot hovering one next to the other
(so just estimate which one spawned first so that it**² won't despawn until you channeled-through)

(**²the second one.. which seemingly did spawn first and is now gone, that is, but also if they despawn during your channeling they won't count towards the quest either and/or be an invalid target, you didn't free them! I should spare further details and stop the nitpicking description, right? but now, hopefullly, you "knaw'mean")

Also players surrounding you will attack those "prisons" for you so you just have to coordinate
where to run to first and might be done with this faster*¹ than "the usual"

I'll just pick a random one to comment on, and I guess I picked Venthyr? I'm fine with that - emphasiziing the "fine" (whatever that all'udes to) :>)

At least for our realms you have loads of players roaming around with WM off around such times.
(and I know the compared WM on maw since I ran it for the first months)

So apparently you have to be capped on souls to get the anima, so they are encouraging you to NOT buy sanctum upgrades that take you under cap? Or am I confused?

You will not earn 20 Stygia if you free a soul when you have the Eye of the Jailer debuff (at 10 stacks Immediate Extermination). However, they are a good source for extra Stygia when you want to collect Stygia during the 1-10 Immediate Extermination phase. You should be able to collect at least 8 of them, and perhaps kill a special encounter while doing so, giving you a grand total of 200ish extra Stygia that day.

They really need to turn souls in to mailboxes. Not literally of course but so you can click them through other people, its a bit annoying when you break one free and you get a tauren necrolord in a giant green bubble and some random beastmaster hunter with two giant water buffalo pets parked firmly on top of it until such time as they see somewhere else they'd like to go and leave, by which time the soul might be gone...and thats not even players intentionally griefing each other it could easily be fixed however.

This quest is currently the only way to routinely earn the redeemed souls needed to access and upgrade your sanctum structures (i.e., teleportation network, anima conductor, scouting map, covenant specific structure).

In addition to the souls, you need anima. I have yet to encounter anyone who has reached max renown and found souls to be the limiting factor for access/upgrade to structures. That's because by ratio, you're going to get souls at a faster rate than anima.

The number of souls required for this quest increases based on your renown, maxing at 20 souls. The souls/renown level goes like this:

5 Souls - 1-14 Renown
10 Souls - 15-23 Renown
15 Souls - 24-31 Renown
20 Souls - 32+ Renown

So at level 32, if you don't spend your anima upgrading your structures, in five weeks you're going to be maxed, likely sooner. For example: teleportation network level 2 needs only 8 redeemed souls, but 5,000 anima. You can definitely get the 8 souls in a week at max level, but it would be impressive (at this point in Shadowlands) to pick up 5k anima in a week.

You can exceed the cap of 100 when you are close to 100. It will only happen if you are not at 100 souls when you pick up this quest, but the collection requirement is higher than your difference between your current soul number and 100. For example, you're renown 32+ and have 95 souls. You receive the quest and it says you will need 20 souls to complete it. Even though you would normally cap at 100, because the quest required 20, you will get credit for all 20 at turn in. Your sanctum reservoir will reflect 115 redeemed souls, and Total Maximum: 115/100.

Thereafter, until you go back below 100 souls, you will not receive souls as currency. Instead you'll receive 500 anima. This is likely Blizzard's attempt to balance out the souls/anima ratio problem so many are experiencing.

PS: It's really weird for me to write some of this. Makes me feel like a snake-handling preacher. ;)

The nerf to this quest is so annoying it's no longer even worth it to do. I can't imagine what possessed someone to make this tedious quest even more-so. Utterly demoralizing.

With your souls caped you will gain 500 anima from this quest. If you're about to upgrade your sanctum and don't want to loose this "perk" just wait until you meet requirements of the quest, then upgrade your sanctum and after that hand in the quest. You will still get 500 anima and also re-cap your souls.

From reading comments I can see other people are capped on available souls. I am as well. However each soul I collected awarded 20 stygia. Everyone will need to determine if the quest is worth their time.

I just completed this quest and did NOT get any anima for completing it even though I have been weeks before. Looks like blizz has nerfed the anima reward to literal nothing. I'm capped at 111/100 souls.

Gotta get that 'time played' metric up, right?

I had 96 souls so I contacted support when I did not get renown for this quest. This is the response: Game Master Urndanorm here. Thank you for getting back to us.

I hear you had some concerns about not getting Renown from the quest Return Lost Souls in game after completing it this last Tuesday. Making sure that things are running smoothly is important, and feeling like you might be missing out on something is never fun. I wanted to dive into this with you and see what we could find out.

As of the release of Patch 9.1, the quest Return Lost Souls is no longer guaranteed to provide Renown in game when completed. It's meant to be replaced by the quest Shaping Fate in Korthia. If you received no Renown from Return Lost Souls, this is intended, Customer Support does not provide Renown for this quest.

IF you are like me and pick up the first lost souls which are only ten. Then pick up the second version which is 20. It will not allow you to gather more than 10 total souls. I have reported this bug as it won't allow you to finish both quests.

At last! Patch 9.1.5 makes this repeatable. After handing in the weekly Return Lost Souls quest (20 lost souls rescued from Maw), the same NPC in your covenant sanctum offers a blue repeatable quest Return More Lost Souls (there is a separate wowhead link for each covenant's version of this quest but it behaves the same) which offers the same reward of 20 Redeemed Soul.

So it's now very quick and easy to change covenants and get sufficient (unlimited, non-time gated) Redeemed Soul for all your sanctum upgrades. It's just the Reservoir Anima that you need to grind now.

This is a pretty significant (necessary for the campaign) quest and YET - 1) you can't figure out where to find what you need but even MORE frustrating is that you there's no marker on your map on where to turn this in. Revendreth is possibly the most confusing and frustrating zones and Sinfal certainly contributes to that being one of the most annoyingly divided and time-sucking base camps but, on top of all that - sure - remove any kind of turn-in ? from the campaign quest. Super helpful.

Confirmed that souls do indeed count toward this quest, regardless of what quest you are on that might have been a meta. This is nice because if you're doing a Torghast run, you can do a lvl1 run and blaze through the entire thing in a few mins and get a bunch of souls. Might even be faster than trying to search for them in the Maw, kill mobs around them, "kill" the stones they are in, acquire them, hope you don't get interrupted when getting them... ugh.

So... when did they make the souls in Torghast count toward this quest? I picked up 17 of 20 in one run because my covenant daily was to get embers from Torghast. Maybe that's why it counted? I'm confused.

As of 9.1.5, I found the most efficient way dealing with grinding all the Lost Souls for all covenants is going into any Thorghast level 1 layer collecting souls from there. The mobs are very weak, they have 4k health and can be easily ignored or gathered for a big burst. But yea following a thorghast route will give u 20 souls in a single run. You might want to put your hearthstone at the covenant base if you're planning to spam getting the souls.

On those days when the Necrolords are running the Assault I have found that it is MUCH
easier to gather my 20 souls with little hassle and time spent in that area. That is assuming
a reasonable number of players are around. At 3 a.m. 5 that may not hold true. Also the
Zorval's Cauldron area stone prisons seem to respawning much slower now than they did
3-4 months ago.

Never thought i would need more lost souls but upgrading all the covenant features for the meta achievement ain't cheap. Here's what i've learned from my time wasting endeavours

- Once you have 100 souls you'll stop getting this as a repeatable quest until you've spent some, however you can hold more than 100 souls

- This quest is farmable in Torghast but for some reason not Sanctum of Domination despite both having lost souls throughout

- The fastest route ive found is doing a Torghast run (any difficulty) which will earn you 17/20 souls if you grab them all. Do a second run and you're good to hearth out or leave group once youve grabbed the final 3 souls. I've tried a couple different wings but I find Skodus Hall is the fastest to run through and has the least contrived layout

to give a different choice, i decided to try to just farm souls in the maw. it looks like the souls respawn rate is incredibly high. i managed to farm the souls very quickly just running a circle around zovals cauldron (near venaris area) and got the souls very quickly. maybe even faster than a torgast run? though in torgast you can grab powers to speed yourself up, you still have to look for some of the souls in there.

TWW Pre-patch
Despite the many comments, this repeatable quest is still missing from ALL of my covenant halls after switching, even after the many attempts of relogging.
-Relogging at Quest giver NPC doesn't help
-Relogging in Orobos doesn't help
-Switching covenants to other halls/NPCs doesn't help
-Powering through main story doesn't help
-Doing 1000 Anima weekly doesn't help
-Upgrading anything in the Sanctum Reservoir doesn't help

No matter what I have tried, I cannot get the NPC to offer the Return Lost Souls quest.
If anyone has any other solutions of soft prerequisites to activate this quest, please share - and thank you!

EDIT: GM Ticket basically asked me to report the bug, which I did before I opened the ticket. Can't see this being addressed if I'm honest.
EDIT 2: Weekly reset fixed this. Be cautious switching however.

I got stung with the bug on a few toons, but switched covenants today with another and instead of skipping the 'walkthrough' where you're introduced to the vendors, Sanctum, Renown npcs etc. I did the whole thing and this quest was immediately available.

It's worth taking the few minutes and not skipping to avoid waiting for weekly reset to get more than the 5 souls you're granted to begin with.

Had a bug this week:

whenever i logged off and log in again, i found out that the quest got automatically abandoned.

Meaning that i can only finish this quest without logging off. I had 2 times already, running around the maw, collecting souls and later realized i did not have the quest on me.

Not a big deal but certainly annoying.

Description

Souls continue to pour into the Maw. Their anima, our very lifeblood of the Shadowlands, is going with those souls to fuel the Jailer. You rescued me from the Maw. I see no reason you cannot pull more souls from that abyss. Bring souls you rescue from the Maw to me and I shall see them put to better use. At least in Revendreth they have a chance of redemption.
