(patch 7.1.5) The goblin keeps shouting about a first place winner throughout the two hours. I was able complete the quest on several characters.

Despite his claim to only take 50 winners, I think he takes all comers.

Current event bugs:

If you finish main quest for 40 Speckled Tastyfish (or just get these, but not finish), then you'll have "no loot" effect during fishing.
"No loot" effect occurs when system try to get you another Speckled Tastyfish, but you already have 40 Speckled Tastyfish or already finish quest.
What to do? Just continue to fish and, if you have good luck, you will get your rare fish (or some trash items, heh).
You get your rare fish, but unable to get your reward from Fishbot 5000
All you need to do - just cancel NPC dialog (close it), then open it again. Repeat X times, until u get NPC dialog with repeatable quest for your rare fish. Done!

Today, 7th of May. I did this event on Kazzak EU server and after 37/40 fish the goblin announced in /yell that fishing contest was over. No winner announcements and the quest vanished which basically prevented me from getting 40/40 and claiming any rewards.

As of today (14 May 2017), I opened a ticket because the event didn't seem to start for me (on WyrmrestAccord-US). Within a few minutes, I got a response:

Greetings, I understand that we are looking into the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza as you went there but were unable to actually participate.

Not to worry as this is actually a known issue where the event just does not seem to want to work correctly. But it is still being looked into and worked on. Testing was done on the PTR for a short while as well. Sadly however we don't have an ETA on when this will get fixed, but it is being worked on.

Apologies for the frustration and I wish you the very best. Take care!

The next week, I tried again and it worked. This time, I hearthed there from my garrison (after picking up the temporary fishing rod and hats for fishing skill boost) and arrived just after 2 PM but before the event started. In the previous week, I had arrived there about 5-10 minutes before the event even started, but I can't draw any further conclusions without more specific descriptions.
I actually did win (or was at least one of the first 50) to turn in 40 tastyfish. (yay) A few minutes later, the event "ended," and I say that in quotation marks for a reason.
I did however wonder if I could still catch the other fish for the other rewards. Despite not being able to catch more Tastyfish, I was still able to catch the other rare fish so long as the event continued.

These fish seemed to be what RNGesus decided to give me (I was hoping for the boots). Promptly at 4 PM, the event completely ended. I no longer could catch the rare fish, but the turnin was still there so don't stress hearthing before it ends. It will still be available to turn in after it ends and you stop catching invisible tastyfish / rare fish.

I did this event today to get Dread Pirate Ring because unfortunately i choosed Boots of the Bay back then when I did it for the achievement.
However once I fished ~31 fishes a NPC yelled that the first half is over and she only has a few rewards left. I managed to finish the event but wasn't able to choose the item I want and got the Boots of the Bay I already have instead. Afterwards more people arrived and got their achievements, so the event wasn't over definitely.
So I guess you have to be one of the first 25 people in your region who turn in the quest to actually CHOOSE the reward you want.
But it seems it's not that difficult to be one of the firsts since I also had a disconnect while doing the event and fished a few times without noticing the swarm which I wanted to fish from was already gone. So make sure you're in the area already, have Fishingbuddy installed and have your best fishing pole equipped (and Boots of the Bay of course if you already own them...)

Quest seems to be working as intended today. I came to the area today around 2pm server time , which is an hour behind my current time zone, only to find the world quest not available. I placed a ticket to a GM and received a quick response that the event now starts at 2pm PST and has nothing to do with the time of your server. For me , it started at 5pm EST. Hope this helps someone in the future . Also , I was able to get the first place rewards on two separate characters , but then was not able to loot the pools in the area after I had turned in the quest .

From an official GM quote:

"The Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza is scheduled to start at 2 PM PST so that would be 5 PM EST for you. The first 50 players will receive the Master Angler of Azeroth achievement and prizes!"

This event is now a world quest that starts in both areas of Stranglethorn Vale at 2PM PST. Server time does not matter. Make sure you set your hearthstone to Booty Bay after you collect your 40 fish. Good luck!

Just did this an it does NOT reward the first 50 players with the Achv. They made it so you have to WIN, get 1st place, to get the Achv. now.

As it stands, the reason why the event is not starting on your server is not because of the issue on your end, but from ours, since we are aware of the ongoing issue about oceanic servers being affected by this bug. To echo the sentiment of the previous representative, the CS department, as well as the Quality Assurance team, are very much so aware of this issue; however, the CS department does not have the information regarding the exact ETA of when the issue will be resolved. I can say that this issue is currently being worked on at the moment, but that the more bug report we can regarding the event will accelerate our developers in the debugging process.

When the quest giver says "Game Over", don't give up. Keep fishing, and if you are still getting the speckled tasty fish then your "area" is not used up yet. You can still get the 40 fish and turn it in.

As others have mentioned this quest is still buggy, I tried it 25.02.2018, Sunday ofc.

I waited near a pool before 2PM and 1 minute after the world quest pops up and I start fishing.

The first 2 winners were announced around 2:15 ..so 13-15 min after the start, but i was at 30/40 at that time (damn you RNGesus!).

The problem here is that after the first 2 announcements the World Quest disappeared from the Quest log.

THEN after around 6 minutes I get the quest again and I started fishing again. At 40/40 as i was returning to BB another winner was announced and the quest dissappeared again!

Some players reported that you can get the quest again if you re-enter the STV zone, but I tried leaving STV and returning to Booty Bay but nothing popped up, and the second time I got it just standing by and pouting. I even tried to relog but nothing.

BUT THEN, AFTER 45 minutes of more waiting in front of Riggle Bassbait(in Booty Bay) I loose my patience and fly over to the Rebel Camp Northern STV, my thinking was that I should enter Duskwood and reenter NSTV again mayyyybe I would get it. The second i landed in the Rebel camp(not yet left the NSTV) the quest popped up and I hearthstone back to BB and deliver the 40 Speckled Tastyfish and get the Achievement awarded and the Heirloom ring I wanted.

So at 2:20 I had 40/40 fishes but had no quest and had to wait for another 40 min or so for the quest to reappear.

Heavily bugged and contested atm (going a bit into details below). You need big luck to win because of this right now (while it was real easy a couple of months ago), but doable.

Prepare for the event to not spawn at all or spawn late or maybe even early, finishing after 15 minutes at max and accepting that getting bad pool rng/heavy competition is pretty much a fail for the week.

I guess the competition is higher because leveling takes way longer now and more people want the heirloom ring because of that.

I'm kinda struggling to finish my collection with the hook and pole because of this.

My advice: If you are not in a rush for whatever reason, wait until a patch when it is easy again. Like a year into BfA is my guess.

So the biggest thing i learned from last week, was STAY away from people. I found a nice spot no where near the beach where the pools kept spawning. For real, stay away from the beach. It's a #$@% show there.

ALSO. It's Hallows End. GET YOUR BROOMS! They are insta cast.

So the TL;Dr of what I did.

Turned of War Mode
Set HS to Booty Bay
Found a nice secluded spot.
Used insta cast broom.
Set fishing and broom to mouse buttons.

Here's how I won in 8.0:

Low pop RP server
Level 110 Highmountain Tauren Druid (Class Trial) (Chance for extra fish from racial, insta-cast flight form)
Keybound cast fish, travel form, oversized bobber, hearthstone (set to booty bay)
Fished up to about 100 skill level before the event (caught track fish manual while doing this)
Fished river in northern STV, only saw 2 other people the whole time

pretty awesome that this is still bugged up. i dont get to play on sundays when this is going on generally, cause i work sunday afternoons. and one of the ones im not working, i cant finish it, cause its screwed up. really sucks.

It's been known for a while that this event does not come up at 2pm server time, like it says in the suggested content panel in-game. Instead, it is 2pm PST (Blizzard HQ time-zone). For people like myself in the EST time-zone, this means the tournament has started at 5pm for us. Today, I show up to Booty Bay to set my hearth like usual, at 4pm (1pm PST) and the event was already over, with the quest turn-in NPCs waiting patiently for any late-finishers. What happened this week, Blizzard? What's going on with the time on this thing?

As I couldn't find a newer comment regarding the time of this event, I contacted the Live support. Here's their answer:
So, the extravaganza runs every Sunday like you know, and runs from 14:00-16:00 GMT, which would be 15:00-17:00 server time, which runs on Central European Standard :)

Hope this helps! I am on Sylvanas, EU, btw (if that matters).

EDIT! I have tested this. The event started at 14:00 server time (12:00 GMT). Probably the GM was clueless. Hope this helps.

Just got my ring finally after so many years. I just want to encourage everyone on two fronts: it is absolutely possible to get this without being a Highmountain Tauren (though I do recommend doing it on a druid still, unless it's Hallow's End and you have a magic broom), and it is also absolutely possible even on a high population server! Keep trying!

Not sure if bug or feature but for some reason the quest did not appear with War Mode on, waited for 10 minutes before giving up. Flew back to town and turned it off, saw fishing bot but did not get quest when returning to Northern STV so not sure what the issue was but another Sunday failed :-/.

Still bugged 17/11/2019.

Event started at 2pm Central European Time. 1pm GMT.

Went in, hopping between schools in Northern Stranglethorn—about 10ish players competing. 15 minutes in (no /yells for winners) Riggle Bassbait calls the end of the event. Flew out to Duskwood and back and the World Quest would pop up again for about 10 seconds before disappearing again. Been here for an hour now with no change.

Sucks, my guys.

EDIT: Another comment claims that 50 people PER REGION can win the event. This true?

Today the contest ended for me between the time I fished up my 40th fish and turning in the quest, but I still managed to turn in the quest for the prize a few seconds later.

I suspect that as long as you manage to fish up the 40 fish and complete the quest requirement before the 50 winners have turned in, you're safe. Now obviously I wasn't about to hang around to see how long the completed quest remained in my log, I was just thankful that I actually managed to get it in. But I guess the important thing is to not give up on turning in the quest if you think you just missed it.

Not sure why but when I entered Stranglethorn today (Tuesday) at 11.08pm I got Riggle Bassbait message saying to get tasty fish. This is his speech which starts the event, on Sundays, at 2pm server time...

I flew down to Booty Bay but he was not there, using Track Fish and no tasty fish pools were up.
Anyone else get this?

Seems like you need to have a minimum of Legion WQs unlocked and the fishing skill (can be at level 1). So you can no longer just create a fresh trial account, get fishing, and go do the event. Tried it on several alts and trial characters, and nothing worked until WQs were unlocked and fishing skill acquired.

a big heads up for anyone who is unsure; this *is* a world quest and acts the same way as one. you can go out and about stranglethorn and try to find a good place to start fishing, and once it starts you'll get the quest and the standard dialogue pop-up.

i was two fish away; maybe next week!

WQ did not show up today, unsure if this is because of the pre-patch, anniversary event, etc. I'm sitting in Booty Bay on Trollbane-US and no indication the event has started.

EDIT: has occurred to me that the time did change. That could also have been a factor.

Does this event (now world quest as I understand) still only appear between 2-4pm server time on Sundays or is this old info?

I find that there is very little up to date information about this quest since Shadowlands released and as a returning player, I figure most players probably have this ring by now or don't care, so I'd like to have a chance at it finally.

This event now it's so *!@#ed up! You only suppose to catch Tasty Tasty fish. I catch 50 fish to catch and still not won this because after 20 catches you start catching trunks, oily blackmouth, firefly snapper. 4 in a row I missed the prizes because I catch 10 more fish but it's just trash. Why is this? It only happened after the squish. I really not understand how on earth anybody can win this after 10-11 minutes. I'm furious now!

Just keep trying until it ends, don't panic. Completed on a high pop server (lots of competition) on my hunter, at 2:16.

Grom'gol and Venture Co are good spots, but expect lots of people. I personally found the river between them to be generally empty and had plenty of nodes.
Start precasting at 1:58, the world quest popped at 1:59 for me this time.
Know when to move nodes. If you've caught 2 fish and a person jumps on your node, consider moving. It can sometimes be worth snagging 1 catch from someone's node
Know where you're going next. If you see a node nearby, look if somebody is already on it.
I didn't use waterwalking as it can mess me up more than help me. Use at your own discretion.
Obviously set your hearth to Booty Bay inn, pop any movement abilities to turn in right outside, and know what you're going to pick beforehand. The heirloom ring is the 2nd option on the left side.

I won the event last sunday on Ragnaros-EU with my zandarali troll druid (the main reason was, I think, that it was at 1 pm instead of 2 pm, because this day was the day to change the clock to winter time, and most people missed it).
Some useful tips:
-have max. skill of fishing
-use druid (highmountain is the best); insta flight mode and more chance to catch fish
-precast before the event begins
-avoid zones around grom'gol and venture co; I was fishing near southeast of Explorers League Digsite and east of Mistvale Valley and I have not met many people
-avoid other anglers..
-set HS in Booty Bay

Dunno how tf this works, I spent 15 minutes waiting in BB for the WQ to pop up, nothing. All of a sudden the goblin %^&* started yelling that the contest was over. Like mate, it didnt even %^&*ing start, wdym green ^&*!@#. Gonna try again next week i guess :))) Also, it doesnt seem to be server specific, cuz there was nobody from my server in BB, the anouncement of it being over started after some kultiran dude from a french server talked to the dude. I do not play on a french server, my server is EN.

I just won first place on my server! (yay!) Unfortunately, when doing the STV Fishing Contest for Master Angler of Azeroth I came across some problems and I'm hoping I can prevent others from making similar mistakes. Here's a few little pro-tips to ensure you get your shiny new Dread Pirate Ring and that ever so coveted Salty title!

First off, make sure you get the right time. I showed up about 2 hours early lol, but at least I wasn't late! I saw some mixed answers in other Wowhead comment threads and in Google searches and such. I assumed the contest would start at 2pm server time and found out shortly after getting there that I was wrong, it in fact starts at 2pm PST.
Secondly, bring some form of water walking. Some of the pools you need to fish from can be difficult to reach, especially if you're a shorter race like gnome, goblin, or vulpera. I personally just bought some Elixir of Water Walking and Draenic Water Walking Elixir off the AH. There was only a few of each up on my server so I bought a couple of both. You won't need more than 3-4 at the absolute max, but I ended up only using 2.
Third, buff up that fishing skill as much as you can. The chance of catching Speckled Tastyfish is increased based on your total fishing skill, including increases from lures and such. I personally have been fishing a lot in my Garrison lately so I went in with my Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat that I got from there and "The Broker's Angle'r" which you can just buy from any Shadowlands Fishing Trainer. Those two items add a flat 20 fishing skill on top of whatever you already have, plus the hat has an on use effect that will put a lure on your fishing pole for 10mins which adds another 7 fishing skill (which could be higher, but higher lures will cost you more gold.)
Fourth, set your hearth to Booty Bay. This is sincerely the fastest way to get back to the quest giver once you've got your 40 fish. It's not super important on lower pop servers but it does save some precious time. To those on higher pop servers, this may be the one thing that sets you ahead of your competition.
Last but certainly not least, TURN ON WARMODE. I play on a relatively quiet server and even showing up 2hrs early to the contest I ran into about a dozen other people preparing for the event. I was terrified of the competition so before I went back at the right time I turned on WM, thinking that anyone else competitively fishing while being prone to ganking is crazy lol. Thankfully I ended up being perfectly fine, I didn't see a single other player for the entire 14 minutes that I was fishing. There wasn't even anyone around the quest giver when I got there and didn't see anyone before I left.

Requirements:
Having the fishing profession. You don't specifically need one expansion's profession, but just in case I do recommend to get the fishing professions from all the expansions.

You do NOT need to unlock world quests from any expansion, contrary to what some say. I created a vulpera, did some quests in Azshara and Winterspring, got him to level 16, and the quest showed up when I was at the Booty Bay.

You DO need to be in the Booty Bay, any sunday at 14:00 CET in order to get the quest.

I recommend playing with a druid that can quickly transform into flying form so that you don't waste time summoning the mount.

IMPORTANT: Although the quest itself is completed at the Booty Bay, in order to be able to fish the Speckled Tastyfish you need to go outside the Booty Bay and fish some fish banks called "Oceaninc Mix" that have a roughly 40% chance of giving you the Speckled Tastyfish. You CANNOT get it from fishing inside the Booty Bay, you need to go outside into the Stranglethorn region's coast.

I'm not sure if I just got incredibly lucky but I won pretty easily with a super scuffed setup on my first try. Level 38 (no fast flying) Highmountain Druid, less than 100 fishing skill (I had exactly 99 at the end of the contest). Use the river between Grom'gol Base Camp and Venture Co Base Camp. Get some Waterwalking Potions, some oversized bobbers, the FishingBuddy addon, and go to town. People were saying the chance to fish up the speckled tastyfish scaled with fishing level, but I don't think thats the case, as I had about a roughly 90% chance of catching one cast. Tip to have 0 competition on your shard, be less than level 50 so you can turn on Chromie Time. I didnt see a single other person while I was there. The contest had a "first-place" winner like 5-6 minutes before I finished, but I just ignored it and kept going. Turned in the quest and got the heirloom ring and the achievement.

This seems to be rather fishy these days.
14:01 Event starts
14:11 First place winner anounced
14:14 Halfway done anounced
14:15 contest over

And this while /who showed that I am the only one of my faction in the zone and I saw a total of three others.
I was at 36/40 when the "contest" was over, so I guess this is plausible with a lot more luck.

But, what the heck? Is this region-wide now? So you compete against hundreds if not thousands of other players that do not even exist on your realm?
On top it is broken, there is a NPC that would accept 5 Speckled Tastyfish but when the event is done the fish are gone.

At least I fished a Rockhide Strongfish before it was over and I got +5 fishing boots for it.
And after the event was over, around 14:21, I fished a Keefer's Angelfish which got me a Lucky Fishing Hat.

Then I fished for annother 50+ minutes just to see if I can catch annother rare fish.
But no luck.
Most of the casts came up completely empty though which might be for casts that would have yielded Speckled Tastyfish.
The NPC to trade in the rare fish was still up, so I guess it is possible to still get these for a while after the event.

I am done with this again for at least a couple of years.

Ok so i have done this quest many times now and have won four times so i am going to share my knowledge.
First off, I will put this at the top since it's most important.
IF YOU SEE A MESSAGE SAYING THE EVENT IS OVER, KEEP FISHING AND TRY TO TURN IT IN ANYWAY!
I am seeing a lot of comments floating around from people who are upset that the event ended so fast and they never went back to the NPC to be sure, so let me clear something up for you. In this new world quest version I believe it is the first FIFTY people that can choose a prize. I can't recall if it is the first fifty in your region or first 50 on the server, (also WM and normal seem to be separate) but either way it seems that it's just the old style message bugging out when it tells you the event is done. You will actually hear him make the same announcement several times in a row if you stick around so don't give up until you have all your fish and check with the NPC.

Ok now that that is out of the way here is the rest of the info.

Fishing skill matters
Even though it's considered low level fishing, the higher your fishing skill the more likely you are to fish up Tasty Fish. I noticed a slight decrease in my fishing luck when I accidentally let my buffs lapse. It was not such a huge loss that it cost me the contest, but the buffs were clearly helping. For my maxed out fishing setup i used:
Captain Rumseys lager.(+5) (buff time stacks up to 15 min and the tipsiness goes away fast. It's easy to make)
Nats drinking hat 8+ base plus a 10min lure that adds another +10 (WoD version is best but the Mop version is a good alternative) If you don't have a hat with a built in lure, get some worm supreme, darkmoon doughnuts or a Heat treated lure for a +10 bonus. Lasts 10 min.
A pair of cheap gloves that I enchanted with the Angler enchant. +5 (this is very easy to get on your own if there is nothing on the AH.)
Sharpened Tuskarr spear +5 (the buff area won't move from where you set it down and has a 10 min cd so use it on your first pool then leave it, dropping it at the next pool whenever it's off cd. Otherwise you can just skip this one)
Underlight Angler. +15. This is the best fishing pole in the game but there are plenty of alternatives that are almost as good at +14 or +13. Do some research and see what you can grab.
If you have them from a previous win, Boots of the Bay will give you +10
And lastly I got some Ancient Fishing Line from Slithon the Last.
In total i had 254 fishing and your absolute max right now is 264 fishing with the boots.

Rewards:
some of these rewards are better than others and with the revamp, I don't think they have a second place prize pool anymore? I think all 50 players get to choose from the “first place” selection. Or at the very least there are several “first place” winners before they move down to second place. (winners please correct me if i'm wrong) So here is some info on the loot for your consideration.
The fishing line can be won from turning in a queenfish, plus there is a better fishing line and pole in the game so I wouldn't recommend wasting a win on them. The boots of the bay could help you in future fishing contests if you plan to do this more than once. The fish trinket has better counterparts out there but it is still a fun vanity item. Also idk if they still have first and second places now that it's a world quest but if they do, the fishing trinket can only be claimed by first place winners whereas the ring and boots could be won by second place, so you may want to prioritize if you are a collector.
Obviously if you are only doing this for the ring then choose the ring. But if second place still exists the ring should still be an option for that while other items would not be.

What Time should I be there?
2pm PST. The event does not use server time so be sure to convert your time properly.

Can I win more than once?
Yes. Once per week on one toon, likely more than once a day if you have alts and are really lucky. But if you try to win two prizes on the same toon, the fish stop showing up. You will need to wait until next week to try again. (maybe you can collect 80 then turn them both in? Have not tried it)

How to Win
Consider the item you want and the toon you will use: Obviously if you just want the ring then you can prep a toon on a low pop server. However the rest of the items are bop so only do this on a toon that can use the prize you want. A highmountain druid is the best for fishing since they can proc double fish and druid flight has no cast time. Though i won this on my nelf hunter without much fuss since she had good fishing skill and i wanted all the buff items on her. consider your options.
Get your buffs ready: as explained above. Don’t forget water walking!
Consider how busy it will be: Is the xpack in a lul right now? everyone preoccupied with something new? might be a good time to fish.
Turn on WM: seriously, this is possibly the most important thing. Obviously do a little scouting ahead of time if you have a high pop server but the difference is drastic. You likely won't run into too much trouble. Each time I used WM I only ever ran into two other players but when I turned off WM there were 15+ by the quest giver alone. + if you lose on WM you could always phase back into WM Off at the inn and check that version of the npc to see if he has any prizes left.
Find a good fishing spot: Do NOT go to the beach with all the bloodsail. Everyone goes there. Obviously you should scout a bit ahead of time but i found that the top half of strangelthorn jungle was best. I started by the nesingwary camp and worked my way into the lake, then back up to the camp since the pools respawn quickly. Even when i had competition i just had to move down river a bit more.
Set your hearth: set your hearth to BB or use the boots if you have them. That way you can teleport right next to the quest giver.
Only fish in pools: tasty fish don't drop in open water. They will drop from all fishing pools in STV though, even wreckage. And upper STV still counts even though it's technically its own zone now.
Have track fishing: this will make your hunt for pools so much faster if you can get it.
Don't fight over pools: unless it's really crowded i highly recommend you don't do this. It can start fights, which are dangerous in WM and ultimately you are decreasing your fishing speed while someone out there who is not fighting for pools gets to keep reeling them in. So even if you slow down That One Guy, everyone else will outfish you.
Have sound on: make sure you can hear that bobber!
Tasty fish appear 1 min after the hour: you can potentially get a head start by casting just before the ?:01 mark so that you pull a fish in right as the announcement goes up .

Ok, so I just did this competition yesterday (as of 9.2.7) because I like collecting Heirloom and stuffs. Here are my tips for anyone who would like to give it a try with the newest patch (as of my comment):

1) Event starts at 2PM PST on Sunday. I have had a hard time skimming thru many posts about the timing, as I play on an Oceanic server. Turns out, the timing on this post by Blizzard is the correct one. Please convert the time to your region time: https://eu.battle.net/support/en/article/44811

For me, the time is early morning on Monday, not on Sunday (please note that this is my region time, you should convert to yours respectively). Just go to Stranglethorn Vale, and the world quest is auto-accepted.

2) My preparation: Oversized bobber, lvling up my Classic Fishing skill to 225, playing a Druid, turns on WAR MODE.

3) Prior to the start, I scouted the area first, saw a lot of nodes, and crafted my own route along the coast from Ruins of Zul'kunda, through Gromgol Base, up to Venture Co Base Camp. For me, the type of node didn't matter, I was able to catch the fish out of every node I saw along the way, fyi.

Notes: The reason I didn't apply for a Trial Highmountain Tauren, on a low pop server, was that I thought, at that time on my server most people would have been asleep (too early in the morning in my region time), thus, less competition there would be. I don't know whether this mentality was true or not, but I can tell you that at the time I was doing this event, I saw no one competing with my nodes. Hence, I have been able to finish around 14 mins into the competition.

Tried to do this a few weeks back, and I think Daylight Savings bugged it out, as it never started. Tried again today and got to 32/40 fish before the world quest just disappeared, along with all the fish in my bag. Didn't think that was intended even if there were winners as there's a turn-in for the left over fish?

As of Dragonflight Pre-Patch phase 2, won this last Sunday on alt. Other than all the tips and suggestions mentioned below, I would like to add that it does not require you to have 225 fishing to get this done. You can do this quest with as little as 140 fishing (perhaps even 100 might work, but already had 140 on alt I tested this with). Moreover, each fishing pool grants from 2-4 tasty fishes max (if not a highmountain tauren) before it disappears, so plan paths accordingly. HF!

I tried 3 times, but now I know everything to win it 100%
Not going to explain everything, why each thing is necessary because it'd be too long, but If you want to win it at the first try, here is what you need to do:

- Look for a non english RP realm, population doesn't really matter because realms are connected anyways.
- Level up a Highmauntain Tauren druid to 40 and get 310% flying. (maybe sell a pet on the AH or something)
- Buy "Elixir of Water Walking" at the AH, atleast 2 of them for the contest because it only lasts for 10 minutes.
- Buy "Oversized Bobber" at any fishing vendor (not necessary but helps a lot)
- Buy "The Brokers Angle'r" fishing pole at Oribos.
- Level up your classic fishing skill to 225, this minimizes the non contest fish catches. (You can do 0-225 at STV)
- Put your hearthstone at STV.
- VERY IMPORTANT: If you have auto loot on, and you click your bobber, it will put the fish in your bag immidiately even without clicking the fish in the loot window. THIS DOES NOT WORK AT THE CONTEST! I did this technique, to minimize the looting time and I thought it's bugged but it's not, you just have to click on the fish in the loot window, otherwise it doesn't count. Or download the fast loot addon but I personally just clicked. This is how I lost my second contest btw, because I was confused why it is bugged.

Why is it 100% win if you do this? Because a bunch of people doesn't want to do all this and compete on a character that has regular casting mount flying and no chance for an extra fish loot. Also you'll most likely fish on your own which means all the pools are yours.
Why do all these only to win the contest? Because it is only once a week and you might not want to do this every sunday for weeks.

I´m a bit dissapointed i had 152 fishing and still got 16 "false" catches. Firefin and blackmouth and trunks and stranglekelp. Is the event scaled from when maxed was 200 +bonuses? Im missing the line and boots of the bay (which im going for here), i use the +5 ones instead but other than that im maxed as far as i can tell. Still the event is over when im at 39..

Enlighten me please, how can i make sure a better % is tastyfish and win?

I prepped for an entire week for this, only to miss the competition because of one minor thing. Here's my tip to avoid this:

Every guide says the competition starts at 14:00 PST on Sunday (that's 2PM for folks not using superior 24h time).

So I Googled: "time PST now" and time.is told me that it's currently 6:00 PST. So I figured cool. About 8 hours left.

A few hours later I was reading another guide and it said "14:00 Server time on EU". I was like wtf?
My realm time is 1 hour ahead of EU server time. So this would have been 15:00 for me.

So I quickly flew over to Booty Bay and sure enough I had missed the competition already by only 41 minutes...

So it's 14:00 (2PM) SERVER TIME for those of us in EU.

Now I gotta wait another week to win this garbage. Looks like I will be rushing my WoD Garrison Dock to try and get one of the rings there instead because I just want a final heirloom ring to complete my heirloom sets.

Finally got the win again to get the boots. With 357 classic fishing skill I still had 11 junk drops (kelp, firefin, blackmouth etc) before hitting 40 tastyfish. As far as I know I miss only 2 from the legion line. Im not sure how to get these drops more effecient. Please tell if you know :)

I got my Tastyfish #40 exactly the moment before he announced "Contest over" (about 15min after start; 1st winner was already announced before), I hearthed to BB, and all the fishes were gone.

Is this normal or a bug? I thought I could turn them in for 5 Gold or such?

Just confirmed that Brownell's Blue Striped Racer for the Fishbot 5000's turn-in quests can still be fished from a Bloodsail Wreckage pool - it was about ten minutes after the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza (the Dragonflight Word Quest version) ended, along the Wild Shore along the southern shore of The Cape of Stranglethorn.

Hardest event ever. I started at CET 14:00 PM and it ended at 14:12. I had only 32/40 How the hell I can win?

Just did this one today. Started at 8am Monday AEST (oceanic non daylight savings time). I was at Northern Stranglethorn in War mode, from my ping I was on an oceanic shard.

Level 70 Blood Elf rogue, 1 fish per cast and most pools gave me 4-5 fish, some only gave me 1-2 (but that was only like 2 pools)

I'm not sure if I was the first to hand it in, but I didn't see any announcements saying it was over or that other people had handed it in.

I figured this would be the best time to attempt it. As it's Christmas Day here in Australia so most people would be busy, and Christmas Eve in America.

I didn't see anyone else while collecting my fish and it was relatively simple. I only saw 2 other people hand it in after me.

Happy I can finally have the Heirloom Ring after wanting it since WOTLK

Contest ended or bugged out early for me today - I needed 4 more fish and the NPC yelled that the contest was over, no winner announced, the WQ vanished and so did my fish. The rare fish did stay and I was able to turn one in.

Interestingly, my buddy and I were both competing (same server and faction), I had WM-on and he had WM-off, and we got the same yell/ending at the same time (2:14pm PST). Seems like the timer/winner pool is not split between WM on/off, it likely only matters for reducing node competition.

One thing that makes this event very hard to win (and the achievement I have been missing for a very long time for my Salty title) is that it is not based on who wins on your server, but your entire region (NA, EU, etc). After the first 50 people in your region complete the world quest, you are locked out of first place (you will hear/see a global yell announcing this) and the world quest usually expires shortly after, and you will have to wait until next week to try again. So while Chromie time is often recommended to reduce competition for pools locally, you are still competing with your entire region to get a first place spot.

A lot of comments give tips but some important things to know about if you have not thought about this event in over a decade: It is now a world quest, not a regular quest you accept from an NPC. A talking head portrait with voice acting will announce when the event starts so you can park your character at your desired fishing spot ahead of time. You still need to go to booty bay to turn in the quest, however.

If you are doing this in Chromie time, I recommend you either have decent gear (because you will agro mobs and need to kill them) and/or bring a class that can cc beasts. Some pools will have patrolling beasts nearby so being able to cc and prevent combat is ideal.
