~~In Beta~~ As of 05. September 2016 You still cannot start this quest after completing objectives for Bringer of the Light quest (the quest from Velen). While the yellow exclamation mark still appears on Exodar map, Nobundo offers no quest whatsoever. Pick it and defend him before safeguarding terrified citizens and destroying portals.

According to comments below, if you miss it, you can leave group to reset the scenario.

When fighting waves, try to protect the Dranenei from incoming mobs, and keep as many of them alive as possible, beceuse they do a lot of healing and also dps.

Also 2 potentially useful ways to complete it for undergeared characters (or without healing) to choose from:

The key to success is to close the all 8 portals for the other quest (without saving the citizens yet), then it seems much easier to complete. I (as fire mage) had 3 tries before closing portals and there were just to many mobs each wave. But after I closed portals I even had small (1-2 seconds) gaps between new spawns, which leads to Nobundo had more health for the final stage and to my victory!

Go ahead and do yourself a favor with this quest by skipping it. It takes a very long time for minimal reward, plus the difficulty on any class that cannot heal would put it near impossible. Nobody likes Nobundo, anyways.

During this quest, the NPCs join your party. Out of curiosity, I reported one of them because you can use "Report Player" feature. After that, you get disconnected and you can resume your scenario but the quest will automatically be abandoned and, if you accept it again, you cannot start the encounter. After resetting the whole scenario, by leaving the instance group, I was able to complete it.

Farseer Nobundo wants your help defending the entrance to the crystal halls. He and three other NPCs join you as a party, and you have to defend against three waves of enemies and then a boss. For me, the waves were

1. Imps & Sycophants
2. Felguards & Doomguards
3. A Fel Lord and Eredar casters/warriors
4. Pitlord boss

The quest takes place as a scripted event, meaning that if you die during it you can run back and it's probably still going. It also means that it can take a while to start if someone else recently finished or abandoned it.

Unless the items are a decent upgrade for you, I'd recommend skipping the quest. For non-healer classes, keeping Nobundo alive is a bit of a pain.

Completely painless on a 105 hunter with ilvl 744. I used a tanking pet and had no issues with the waves. On the last boss, Nobundo insists on tanking, but the pet taunts it back. I killed the boss with Nobundo having 67% HP remaining. Worth doing if only for the simple fact that you won't be able to do that in the future, once you complete the scenario.

As a non healer just keep the Broken Shaman north of your party alive and it should be a breeze.

Still true as of August 31st.

So, if you really want to do this, get cracking when you arrive in the Exodar.

(this whole story line is awesome, but I'm not sure how much this side quest adds to it)

If you're having trouble staying alive or killing Karzak, even as a class without serious self-healing, you're doing it wrong. Took me a few failures myself to figure out that you don't just need to protect Nobundo. You'll notice groups of Draenei fighting down two hallways nearby. Go back and forth between those two and pick up all the mobs as they appear. Kill them quickly and try to keep as many of the Draenei alive as possible. They are Shaman that will heal and do a bunch of damage. When Karzak appears, they wreck him pretty quickly. If you stand around and wait for the demons to come to you, like I did the first few times, the lesser demons will kill the Shaman and the bigger ones will overwhelm you later.

Managed to pick this quest up after getting to the stage of the scenario where Velen wishes to examine the mysterious lightbound object. Only problem is I had to abandon the quest Bringer of Light and restart it from Khadgar. Once I got back into the scenario, I still couldn't pick up the quest until I spoke with Velen and began his quest to save the people and close the portals.

Starting over sucked, but the good part is that I got to kill the rare twice here and get some AF power.

Soon as you've spoken to Velen about the object and he asks you to save his people and close portals, rush straight to Nobundo. The earlier you get here, the more Shaman's are alive, which leads to more dps on the waves.

There are also 3 portals just outside Nobundo's little area, closing those may help (further testing required), but coming directly here my first time, there were dozens of Shaman's on both paths, and I only had to defend the southern tunnel (the one that Karzak will enter through). The rear/west path was easily defended by the NPC Shamans and I never had to kill a single guy coming from that tunnel.

Second time I came here, I immediately moved to kill the Houndmaster rare, and then slowly mosied my way over to Nobundo, rescuing 12/12 citizens and closed 4 portals before I got here. Closed the three portals, then spoke to Nobundo and there were practically zero Shaman's defending tunnels. I had to ping-pong between the two tunnels, gathering them all up to keep them off the group NPC's.

TL:DR:
-go straight to Nobundo if you want to finish this easily and you are badly-geared and/or no self-healing.
-Come here last if you're a masochist and like having to bust your ass off.

First update (2016.09.05): third run here, I tested getting 8/8 portals before speaking to Nobundo. Harder than my first time, where I went almost directly there and I destroyed maybe 3 portals tops

Second update (2016.09.09): fourth run, I destroyed 0 portals, rescued 0 citizens. No change in Fallen Shaman count.

Moving in a direct fashion immediately to Nobundo is no different than taking a few moments here and there on your way to destroy portals or rescue citizens. Just don't leave it too long, or it ramps up the difficulty because you'll lose the Fallen Shaman's that heal you.

This is just a side quest. A bonus. You don't need it to advance and can skip it.

This quest seems horribly bugged (at least for me). Prior to starting the quest Nobundo and the gang move around and attack enemies that come near them. As soon as I start the scenario however thet become stock still and only kill enemies that I kite towards their little possy of ne're-do-wells making the scenario extrodinarily difficult to complete (if not impossible). Add to that the "healer" npc does not seem interested in healing nor do any of the other casters, she sat at 60% mana for the duration of the encounter and even when myself and the "tank" were at 30% health she did not heal us and they eventually perished causing an automatic failure forn
the quest. I came here to see if anyone had encounter this issue or if their was a solution to this impossible quest but it seems the only answer is having self heals (which as a DH I do not) and having completed certain other quests in a specific order before hand (something that I had not known or done correctly). Luckily it seems this quest is entirely skippable so do yourself the favour and spare yourself the agony and repair bill and just skip this fel cursed quest

Just did this quest on Hunter and Paladin, was easy once I started running back and forth in the tunnel past all the minions to make them help kill stuff, as they reset to their original position if they're not targeting anything. Of course much easier on a hunter.

For all Hordies who've never been to the Exodar, you can mount up inside :) And if you're interested in the lore, the pink hologram statues depict the demons they tried to escape from when they crash landed here. There are a ton of Refugee's to rescue in the Trader's Tier. See the screenshot.

Seriously, people, don't even waste your time on this quest. By the time you get this quest, you'll most likely have outgeared the reward it offers. Not to mention that the whole scripted quest is buggy as hell.

If you wander too far from the main area you'll fail the quest. Karzak for some reason walked off, then I was feared further outside of the hallway and the quest failed.

As of 19-October, it is still the case that you can't pickup this quest after you complete the objectives of Velen's quest (even if you haven't handed in yet)

Leaving group and resetting still fixes, but the rewards aren't really worth it as others have mentioned. :)

This entire mini event in Exodar to discover the purpose of the Mysterious Object typifies everything that is wrong with the expac. Rather than create interesting content, Blizzard have just thrown in loads and loads AND LOADS of endless trash to mindlessly DPS. Utterly boring, utterly uninspiring.

Then the Nobundo mini event, which is far too long, and has pathetic quest rewards at the end of it. Unless you have above average gear you are going to get overrun towards the end, go into the fight with the pit lord mini boss with your party with too little health to make it through.

Oh, and of course your "combat companion" from Class Hall conveniently does not appear to help, since this is an 'instance'.

Useless, overlong, tedious quests. Yep, 2017 is going to involve changes, and one of them is not renewing my subscription to Warcraft.

I struggled with this quest on one toon because I had leveled through legion to 108 entirely through invasions. My only gear better than Spires of Arak was from a couple of green drops I had gotten off of invasion mobs. In other words, I was woefully undergeared.

The way I finally beat it was by concentrating almost entirely on one end of the tunnel so that a relatively large group of shamans were saved. Additionally, as soon as Karzak was called I hotfooted it out into the Crystal Hall just south of the encounter area where a Paladin and two Mage npcs were stationed. As soon as I got into range they engaged against Karzak. Those plus getting all of the shamans from one end of the tunnel to fight (I actually had to run through them in order to activate them) did the job.

200 ilvl upgrade...

There is a new problem with this quest as of March 2, 2018. I not sure how far down I had gotten Karzak, but somewhere during the fight, all the NPC's suddenly leave the group and the encounter ends because "you are no longer in a group".

This has happened twice and after 10-15 minutes of fighting everyone just goes home, and the quest evaporates.

I'll update later if I can figure out how to get around this problem (if I have the patience).

Update - evidently the area you can fight him in is extremely small. Stay on the platform where the quest is given. Straying up to the level just above or below, causes the quest to abort. You can drift away to fight the first three waves, but for the boss, I wasn't able to complete it unless I stayed on the central platform.

This quest is basically a simulation of the worst pug possible. The tank never taunts and immediately loses aggro, the healer stands around picking her nose, and the damage dealers do little more than auto attack. According to Blizzard this quest is working as intended, so I can only assume its purpose is to make all your interactions with real players pleasant by comparison.

The Broken is seems to be rendering this quest almost broken (sorry) in 8.0.1. Specifically, Nobundo is pulling crazy aggro, so when the pit lord arrives he beelines Nobundo and quickly kills him, failing the quest. Even spec'd as Vengeance, Nobundo would put out an aggro spike every few seconds, requiring heavy use of taunts. Fister Rockfist also seems to be putting out a lot of aggro, so I think the problem is with their shared Flame Shock attack (spell 189804). Or I suppose you could just grab the boss immediately on spawn before he gets to Nobundo, though he hits pretty hard.

Seems to have fallen victim to the scaling fiasco of the BFA pre-patch. Just tried it at max level and the boss guy at the end annihilates Nobundo in a very short amount of time - not very much longer than the duration of his fear, in fact. Unless you have great burst dps, don't waste your time on this quest.

Description

The Exodar shook from the force of the Legion's arrival. Before we could react, demons were running rampant through the halls, slaughtering everything in their path. If it were not for the Prophet, we would have all perished in the initial assault.

I was charged with evacuating the Crystal Hall, which is when my Broken and I were separated from the main force.

We fell back into the collapsed hall to make our last stand.

With your aid, we may survive this invasion.
