Database > Quests > Campaigns > Death Knight Campaign.

Found in the "Maw of Souls" dungeon.
Apparently it belongs to the DK campaign, however I've also got it as a DemonHunter. Not sure if there's any use for it or if it's just a bug. Most likely a bug. (Beta is Beta)

In case anyone is wondering the item drops from the last boss in Maw of Souls, not like the ring which you had to loot from under the stairs on the 1st lvl of the ship.

Maul of the Dead is a Death Knight campaign quest as a drop from Helya within the Maw os Souls dungeon (normal or mythic). As a DK on this quest, it is an auto drop as you defeat her as the last boss of the dungeon on the end of the ship.

The quest is given out by Salanar the Horseman at Acherus by using your Death Gate from Class Hall. More on the dungeon can be found here:

So according to the item's flavor text, the Maul of the Dead has been "infused with the souls of countless fallen Vrykul warriors." So uh, we really just brought Salanar a mace version of Frostmourne just to use as a blacksmithing hammer?

I tried to do it on mythic+. Dont do it, you wont get the quest reward (since apperently you must loot the boss :(

You have to join a group to Maw of Souls. Normal, heroic or mythic are all okay.
Maul of the Dead drops from container that appears after final boss Helya - so you have to do a full run through the instance.

Maw of Souls: Maul of the Dead

Retrieve the Maul of the Dead from Helheim.

Description

All of the necessary components have been gathered together. Soon, the unholy steeds of the damned will trample the armies of the Burning Legion.

However, our work is not quite done. One item yet remains beyond our grasp...

Lurking within the depths of Helheim, the fallen queen Helya rules over the dead. In her possession is a maul, infused with the souls of countless fallen warriors.

Bring to me the Maul of the Dead and with it, I will forge barding so impenetrable... no demon shall break it!
