Obalis is the first trainer you'll challenge who uses epic pets. They are:

Pyth - Beast
Spring - Flying
Clatter - Critter

Despite their apparent rarity and assumably higher-than-rare stats, the battle is not that much more difficult than any of the previous ones.

My strategy was a simple type match-up and zerg down. None of the pets have noteable CC and as long as you exploit their weakness they should drop quickly enough.

Just wanted to quickly say I had no magical pets leveled at this time so I beat his flying guy with a lvl 20 Crimson Geode from deepholm, his feedback move was pretty powerful so I didn't need to level him, the other pets I used were Clockwork robot and Adder.

You must be very lucky to get the correct order because otherwise he will kill you in 2 to 3 shots. His flying pet is un-attackable every 2 turns so doubtful if you can survive to kill him. I have tried 8 times and the best I could do was kill 2 and get his last pet down to 43 health to my 187. He killed me before I could attack. I use a mechanical / Magic / Beast all 3 are RARE. I don't know what else to try? Sometimes he just cheats! Also my mechanical pet does not rez when killed. VERY ANOYING!

I am having problems beating him with a simple matchup of pets that are strong against his types so I looked at perfect matchups. If you want a pet that does strong dmg and takes weak dmg, try these:

Spring: Lil' Tarecgosa. Surge of Power should do most of the work, and flying types are weak against dragons so you should survive.

Clatter: A Flayer Youngling is your best bet here. Make sure to use Rampage and Triple Snap. Most of Clatters damage comes from a critter attack.

Pyth: No flying types with mechanical attacks exist so you can go either way here. He does monster damage, especially when he poisons you.

Off to level some more pets....

he was pretty easy, kinda sad with epic pets. i used: effervescent glowfly on pyth and some of spring, then i used celestial dragon to finish spring off and killed clatter. i had curious wolvar pup ready to kill clatter though :)...all my pets were 25 and blue (curious was green since i havent seen a blue one yet)

Magic is weak vs flying. I just defeated this guy using aquatic (huge toad) instead and it worked fine.

Lil' Smokey vs Pyth - REM! Robot does not get back up after he is killed
Restless Shadeling (Undead) vs Spring
Silky Moth (Flyin) vs Clatter

They fixed the bug for robots not resuscitating. I won with Darkmoon Tonk, Guardian Cub (has magic ability), and Panther Cub. Took a lot of work leveling the Tonk, but it was worth it. =)

I tried a few different pets, and battled him about 3-5 times before I won.

Finally, I got him down with the following pets:

-Wild Golden Hatchling *Rare*
(Breath + Call Lightning + Liftoff)
Took his snake down to roughly 100 health.

-De-Weaponized Mechanical Companion *Uncommon*
(Metalfist + Overtune)
Was able to finish off the snake, and brought the moth's health down to half. Though, I'm sure he could have finished the moth if I had time to heal.

-Lil'Ragnaros *Rare*
(Sulfuras Smash + Magma Trap + Sons of the Flame)
Finished off the moth and the Tol'vir scarab.

Now.. Lil'Ragnaros isn't very strong against the Scarab but his abilities were very helpful. I started off with a Magma trap, instantly used Sons of the Flame (hide underground until Magma trap explodes) then as he was stunned from Magma trap, bash him in the head with Sulfuras Smash. :) It was a close call but this helped me beat him twice! Once for achievement, then the daily right after.

Finally consistently beating him with a team of rare 25s (NOT necessarily on the first try, RNG still rules the battle, unfortunately):

Nordrassil Wisp using Light, Flash, Arcane Explosion against Spring and I continue using the Wisp against Pyth until it dies

Landro's Lil' XT using Zap, Repair, Tympanic Tantrum to finish Pyth and again using this pet until it dies

Cat using Pounce, Rake, Devour against Clatter (The fight is truly trivial if Cat is anywhere above half-health when Clatter enters the battle)

I hope this helps someone against this bear of a Master Pet Tamer!

Beat him with the following level 25's . All of Rare quality.

Dark Phoenix Hatchling. - Lazer. Immolate. Conflagrate. Used only Lazer on Spring (his Moth pet) survived with enough health to throw an Immolate dot on Pyth (the snake) then it died.

Switched to - Cogblade Raptor - Batter. Overtune. Exposed Wounds. Used Overtune to start with to make myself faster. Then just used Batter til Pyth was dead. Lived long enough with the poison debuff to batter Clatter (scarab) once before I died for good (resurrecting earlier).

Switched to Diemetradon Hatchling - Claw. Screech. Ravage. Used Screech to slow Clatter down. Then clawed a few times til it health was low. Used Ravage to finish him off. (ravage heals if you kill the pet in the 2 turns it hits).

I found this guy far less irritating to beat than the guy in Dragonblight. haha

I just battle this guy. I had to start and stop the battle a few times for him to send out the right pet for my 1st in my line up.

I don't have any Magic types leveled to cap so I replace with a Flyer.
My Line up:
Clock Work Gnome level 25 rare (Tronmega)
Kun-Lai Runt Level 25 rare (Egore)
Wildhammer Gryphon Hatching Level 25 rare (Bluewynn) Side note: I have a level 22 Gryphon (green: uncommon, named: Stormwynn. i'm not going to level him just keep him out.
Anyway -
I wanted Tronmega to start so I had to do a few start and stops until he figured out I wanted his Snake. Tron maded quick work ofit. Build Rocket, metal fist x2, die, reboot, Repair, launch rocket - over.
Then he send out his Moth. I was worried because I didn't have a magic type. However - Bluewynn was able to take him down with out much trouble. In fact, Bluewynn stayed alive and was able take on the Beetle for a few round just for fun. Once the Beetle was down to half health i pulled Bluewynn and sent out Egore. Egore did his finishing move on and killed the Beetle in 2 rounds.

All pets survived this battle against Epic pets.
Note: A good Flyer can replace the need of a magic type.
IF you are looking for Magic type Deadwind pass in front of Karazahn has a few Arcane eyes floating around. Levels 15-17.

Consistently beat him with:

Darkmoon Zeppelin using Missile, Decoy and Explode against Pyth. First put up the Decoy, then use Missile until you will die on the next hit, then use Explode. Usually I can Explode against the next pet as Pyth will already be dead.
Nether Ray Fry using Arcane Blast, Tail Sweep and Shadow Shock. This one goes against Spring, the flyer. Often Spring will be down 400-500 HP due to Explode, but even when he's not, this baby still takes him out.
Clouded Hedgehog using Bite, Survival and Counterstrike against Clatter. Using a smart Survival often saved my butt. I actually beat Obalis the first time while this one was still 23, so it's a great combo.

For the longest time my team was :

- Lil'XT for Pyth, Celestial Dragon for Spring ( usually went into Clatter ), and the third pet was a random pet - quite often my Spawn of Onyxia.

Nowadays my team for this battle is :
Lil'XT ( one from the store, which is breed H/B ) matched against Pyth. I usually lead off with Tantrum to weaken the backrow. I use him until he dies ( usually dies off against Spring )
- Baneling ( from the sc2 digital deluxe thing, breed is P/B ) for Spring. Not the greatest pet in the world and lacks burst damage but at least it is a Magic Pet ( usually ends up dieing against Clatter )
- Stunted Shardhorn (P/P breed ) for Clatter. Very high damage when you hit.

Had no problem with him and was able to defeat him the first try. I used:

Lvl 25 Uncommon Cogblade Raptor
Lvl 25 Rare Celestial Dragon
Lvl 25 Rare Panther Cub

Cogblade Raptor died, but was able to finish off Pyth when he came back. Celestial Dragon took down Spring easily and completed half of Clatter before he died. Panther Cub finished him off and had almost full health.

I was just able to kill defeat this guy with two pets:

Nexus Whelpling: Frost Breath, Mana Surge, Arcane Storm.

Son of Animus: Metal Fist, Siphon Anima, Extra Plating.

Both level 25 and both rare.

For this guy I personally dont have a strong beast pet. so i used my lvl 25 Disgusting Oozeling against his beast pet. used Corrosion then Expunge on Pyth. luckily Expungue hit bringing the bird down to like 20% hp. Just a FYI if Expunge misses u are in trouble, although it has an 85% chance so.. whatever. Next i used my Emerald Proto-Whelp its rare at 25 with 305 power 273 speed. just used emerald presence and emerald dream when at 60% or below to heal up against his moth Spring. tanked him down and killed with Emerald bite. then i was able to kill his critter as well with my Emerald bite and healing up strategy.
I had a Fel Harvester 25 saved up just incase.

I find it really funny that his last pet, the critter does Apocalpyse.. I mean the battle is almost over and he casts a 15 round spell. like come on.. seriously?

Really easy fight to 2 man.
Anubisath Idol- Demolish, Sandstorm, Deflection
Emerald Proto-Whelp- Emerald Bite, Emerald Presence, Emerald Dream
Anubisath Idol with Demolish wrecks pyth, Emerald Proto-Whelp with Emerald bite wrecks Spring and also takes reduced damage from flying being dragonkin.
Save a third spot for a leveling pet.

I two petted him with Green Wing Macaw against his first pet and then my Nether Faerie Dragon, which lasted through the second and third pet. I tried about five times before hitting on this combo, and it worked the first time.

Right now having good results with Dread Raven, Carry pet, and Untamed Hatchling. Any crow or raven would make quick work of Pyth. Let your bird eat a couple of attacks from the moth until it dies, then bring out your carry for one turn. It would be best for this to have around 500 hitpoints to survive a dust attack.

Then bring out your Untamed Hatchling. First activate Spiked Skin. Both the moth and critter do multiple, small attacks and will do nearly as much damage to them as they do to your dragon. Healing flame when you can, Tail Sweep when you can't. You will be slower than both his final pets, so Tail Sweep does do its bonus damage. The humble hatchling cleans up both of his final pets very neatly.

Easy Peasy.

I took him down with Clockwork Gnome and Chrominius:

Turret
Metal fist
Metal fist
Next move doesn't matter (Clockwork gnome will die)

Turret will finish off Pyth

Bring in Chrominius

Use Arcane explosion twice and Ancient Blessing when it becomes available, rinse and repeat until Spring dies.

Clatter will come up with 700-800 hp (damaged from Arcane explosions)
Finish him off with Ravage)

I took him out with a 2 pet team consisting of:

Lvl 25 Restless Shadeling (rare h\h)

Lvl 25 Onyixian Whelpling (rare p\b)

Start with the shadeling and just spam shadow shock on opponent(s) until he dies.

Bring in ony and spam tail sweep to victory!

I had a lvl 25 mana wyrmling as my back up for a just in case scenario.

Clockwork Gnome and an uncommon Nexus Whelpling worked for me. I did not need the third pet. I beat him two for two with this team.

Start with Clockwork Gnome.
Build Turret, Metal Fist, Metal Fist. Repeat until he dies.

Nexus Whelpling.
Arcane Storm, Mana Surge, Arcane Storm.

Zandalari Anklerender - (2,2,2)
Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling (1,2,2)
Chrominius - (1,1,2)

Black claw > Hunting party took Pyth down.

Decoy > Thunderbolt > Breath finished off Spring.

Bite > Bite > Howl > Surge of Power

Was able to 2 pet this npc with the following team:

Skywisp Moth (1,1,2) - Start with Call Lightening, cocoon, then slicing wind until python is dead
Emerald Proto-Whelp (2,2,2) - Emerald Presence, Emerald Bite. When at half health use Emerald Dream, keep shield up. This pet can solo both moth and beetle.
Leveling pet

If you want overwhelming power user Flayer Youngling or Lil' bad wolf on beetle. I have also had success soloing with the emerald proto-whelp.

I found that Iron Starlette and Teroclaw Hatchling worked together for both the Elekk Plushie for the An Awfully Big Adventure achievement and also a carry pet, which provides fairly decent XP, particularly for lower-level pets.

Starting out with the Starlette against Pyth with the attacks: Wind-Up, Supercharge, Wind-Up to finish. You could skip the Toxic Smoke, i tried twice to mix in a toxic attack and it made no difference, maybe because of RNG, maybe because newb, maybe just not possible for it to make any difference.

In any case, on the next stage, my Starlette died when I tried to get off any attacks against Spring. I swapped in the Elekk or leveling pet on the Starlette's death, then immediately swapped in the Teroclaw.

For the Teroclaw's attacks, I basically just spammed Dodge on cooldown, kept Nature's Ward up, and Alpha Strike to fill in. Slow but steady, this worked to finish off both of the next two opponents, Spring and Clatter. I didn't particularly have a set method, the attacks against me did were not consistant (random), so I haven't developed any specific timing of attacks.

The first successful attempt, I used an Elekk for the achievements, then I swapped in a level 7 Ash'ana for the daily -- which made it up to level 11 from the XP without any bonuses (still working through Taming the World for the Safari Hat). With this method, my swapped-in pet was never attacked, so it really doesn't seem to make a difference what you use here. You could skip straight to Teroclaw after Starlette if you want to just finish the fight or you don't need the Plushie achievement or care for the XP. Really, the Plushie doesn't even need to be in combat for the Adventure.

Easy enough fight:

Lil'Bling 2/2/1
Chrominus 2/1/2
Clouded Hedgehog 1/1/1

Start with Lil'Bling Extra Plating, Make it Rain, Inflation, you might have another shot of inflation at the end, else he dies
Switch to Chrominus with Howl followed with Arcane Explosion untill dies
Switch to Hedgehog, Bite, Counterstrike, Bite & all his pets should be dead then ;-)

I used Ikky, (1,1,1) Comet (2,2,2) and Nexus Whelping (2,2,2)

Start with Ikky, use black claw and hunting party, bring in Comet and use barrier and arcane blast until he dies, then bring in Nexus Whelping and mana surge and arcane storm. Ended the fight with Ikky and Whelping only half down on health.

I tried many of the pet combinations in the comments but kept losing to Spring. Finally one of the suggestions worked for Spring!

I used Ikky against Pyth. Black Claw followed by flock took him out. Any pet with Black Claw and Flock or Hunting Party works against Pyth.
I then used Onyxian Whelpling against Spring. Tail Sweep took Spring out easily and then took out Clatter too.
I had Chrominius as a third pet but didn't have to use him.

Is this buggy for anyone else? I do not get the follow up quest Battle Pet Tamers: Pandaria after this encounter automatically and the NPC in Stormwind got no new quests for me either.

I used;
Lil' Bling 2,2,1 (started with extra plating)
Stormborne Whelping 1,2, 2 (never used tail sweep)
which frees the last spot for whatever pet you want to level
fast and easy

My team:
Hydraling (1/1/1)
Dream Whelpling (1/2/1)
Fel Pup (1/1/2)

I used this team without having checked any other sources and they did very well.

Hydraling - Call Lightnight, then Deep Bite, which increases with each attack. Kileld the first one of the team easily and managed to do damage to the second before dying.
Dream Whelpling - I used Emerald Bite, with Healing Flame as needed. Again, killed the second one of the team and was alive to do damage to the last.
Fel Pup - Bite and Vengeance as appropriate.
