Am I the only one reacting to the fact that this was for only 5 years ago, and Vanessa can't have been more than about 7 or 8 years old at the time, which means that she's now, 5 years later, 12-13 years old... And I'm supposed to kill her knowing that? O_O

Interesting to note that you can see the corpses of Mr.Smite, Captain Greenskin, and oddly Cookie in the vision.

I guess now we know that cookie is either a hunter,shaman or warlock.

Just completed quest w/ alt char. and realized clues are there indicating 'whodunit' throughout quest. I liked the way they blacked out 'villIain' like they do in Detective Conan.

It's south, but not immediately south.

If you are in the right house you will see a label The Deadmines - Defias Hideout pop up as you enter. As for the advice "follow the homeless" it was meaningless to me - there was no pattern to the movements of the homeless here or inside the mines that I could work out. Perhaps this was a bug and others see a stream of homeless making their way to the entrance. Whatever.

From the house, you go up the stairs, and this will get you to the the entrance to the mine.
It all gets twisty at this point, but I went to the southernmost area of the dungeon - lots of undead
and with a different colour on the minimap. I was wrong - go south but before you reach the undead part turn west, that's where the instance portal is. After entering the portal, light the incense.

There are dungeon quests following this one if you need/want them.

I still remembered the way through to the portal, so I left the homeless guy in the dust :P This quest was a great bit of nostalgia, with a surprising twist. Well... not so surprising if you've done Heroic Deadmines, but you know what I mean.

This wasn't too obvious for me when I did completed this quest, so I wanted to share my thoughts. First, you do have to go into the Deadmines instance to complete this quest, but you don't have to be part of a group (unless you want to run through the instance). In terms of getting to the instance, if you haven't done it before, after entering the building and going upstairs, keep to the right. If you've start fighting undead, you've gone the wrong direction. Once you're inside the instance, you'll just use the item and it'll complete the quest. You'll still have to run back out of the instance to turn it in.

Am I the only one who was unable to turn this one in at all? Gryan doesn't even give his sound clip when clicked on; he just makes the talking gesture and then returns to his animation.

You have to get inside the Deadmines instance and then use the quest item. I was using it outside even though thats near the entrance as well.

The trick is to find the instance portal, which is abit hard for those who havent done deadmines without the LFG.

This quest is a lie! So much of it was authentic, the hunter using mana, the group focusing adds then killing Edwin, ect ect... This made me miss this fight, and then made me cry right at the end.. RIGHT as Edwin dies, the rogue uses Shadowstep. What is this madness? From the date of this quest (2010), 5 years ago would put it 2005 (I appreciate how they used RL dates as the years that pass in game), and shadowstep wasn't implemented till 2007... Is this rogue from the future, or perhaps the inventor of shadowstep? If not, then this needs to be changed to be as authentic as they appear to have wanted.

I still got lost with all of these instructions, so what I did was to go back to the start and then...

Follow the cave wall around to the right - don't deviate anywhere else. You will very soon come to a wooden bridge and just down and to the right you will see the swirling purple entrance. Simples!

Okay, so when you first reach the deadmines, it's all a lie, you have to find the purple portal instance thing which is the entrance to the actual deadmines. :)

Of course, back in Vanilla WoW when we were all doing Deadmines to kill VanCleef, priests couldn't shield their tank because a warrior couldn't develop rage while shielded.

And after playing a priest for many years, and healing many level-appropriate groups through Deadmines, I know of absolutely no priest that could have kept their party alive through that fight without quite a few major heals, never mind renews, etc.

But....well....ya know...........details.

I recommend that you fly/taxi back to Sentinel Hill first and set your hearthstone there if you haven't already. That way you can just hearth there instead of running all the way back out to Moonbrook.

Once you get down to the basement, use "M" key to open a map. You will need to walk all the way to the left on the map to where you see a double circle mark which is the REAL ENTRANCE to The Deadmines instance. Once you walk through the entrance of The Deadmines instance, use the item: Incense Burner to look into its past. After finishing watch the event, get out from the instance and walk all the way back to the outside of the basement.

The only thing inaccurate about this reenactment is that Cookie is already dead. Every group I was ever in killed Cookie last since you'd just drop down on top of him after killing VanCleef.

This is an old but confusing quest, which doesn't tell you that you have to enter (but not clear) the instance. The Wowhead comments didn't help me much, as the homeless wander back and forth so cannot be followed.

So, here's a final precis!

The entrance to the building containing the Deadmines tunnels is at 42.56 71.71

Once inside the Deadmines tunnels, work your way West to the entrance to the Deadmines instance, which is at precisely 26.18 51.06.
Note that these coordinates to the Deadmines instance are for the Deadmines tunnels map, not for the Westfall map.

You need to use the item in Deadmines the dungeon, not Deadmines the cave. I've spent few minutes trying to find the spot near the entrance to the cave since it says "Deadmines" when you enter. Just go to the dungeon itself and use the item right after entering it.

This quest alone is pretty sad. But if you know the full story its even sadder
Because Edwin Vancleef wasnt a villain. Not really.
He and the rest of the stonemasons were refused payment for a job that took Decades to finish. The rebuilding of the entire city of Stormwind.
Long story short, onyxia infiltrated the House of Nobles and manipulated them into not paying.
They rioted, and accidentally killed queen tiffan. One of their few advocates.
They were exiled from stormwind, losing their livelihoods, homes, belongings, family and country. Without a copper to their names.
Edwin vancleef sought to tear down the house of nobles and the feudal system that had screwed over so many people, stealing and pillaging to work towards their goal of building the ogre juggernaut to siege stormwind.
To take back the city they built on their hard backs.
Edwin Vancleef would be the hero the people needed. The dark hero they created.
But we murdered him.
In front of his young daughter no less.
And took his head as our trophy.
That little girl had to crawl her way out of that mine. Past all the dozens if not hundreds of corpses we left behind. Making her way across the most crime ridden destitute part of the kingdom alone until collapsing exhausted in a barn. The saldean family farm. Who took her in and raised her. Her having feigned amnesia to hide her identity as surely if anyone knew she existed shed be hunted down, and her plans shed begin to plot would be for nought.
5 years later (well 2 years after some retcons) the downtrodden and forgotten of stormwind returned, but not the stonemasons. Rather the homeless and poor who lost everything in either the post northrend war economic downturn or had their homes destroyed by the cataclysm. The compound meant to house them turns them away and the conquering heroes of westfall and northrend returned.
The people who sent us to kill edwin vancleef.
It wasnt hard for vanessa to turn the people on stormwind again.
Because once again, the nation had done most of the job on their own.and shed spent her time taking care of the homeless she could either in her home that became a halfway house, or from sentinel hill.
She had the defias organized well enough to plan out complex murders in daylight no less without stormwind ever realizing there was a growing threat in westfall at all.
By the time we realized the defias brotherhood Was truly back it was to late.

With 9.0 pre-patch, if you're in Timewalking Campaign (Chromie Time), you can't run into the dungeon manually which makes it difficult to complete this quest. Right now, the only solution is to disable Chromie Time on your character or queue specificly for Deadmines (and you sadly lose that extra XP from random dungeon).

Hope it gets fixed soon!

If anyone gets an error saying "You can't enter because of your timewalking campaign", make sure to check your characters dungeon difficulty is set to 'Normal'. (Right click your portrait in the left corner, Dungeon Difficulty > ).

Deadmines has an heroic instance, which is not accessible for lower levels, thus resulting in an error.

This incense will put your body and mind in a deep meditative state. Once the trance begins you will be pulled into the spirit world. Do not fight the trance once it has begun, <name>. Allow the spirits to show you what they know.

You must leave now. Go to the Deadmines, a place which I am told holds great significance in the history of Westfall. Once inside, use the incense.

You may enter the Deadmines through the old farmhouse south of here. Follow the homeless.

Return to Gryan with your discovery.
