The chest is on the shore near some floating debris in the water. There's also a journal lying beside it. Pick that up for another part of the quest. Also if you go up high on the mountainside where the ruins are there's an Argent Dawn guy there with another quest for you.

For those with add-ons such as Cosmos, Wowhead Looter and Titan Panel, the coordinates are 36, 30.

I was at the depris on the beach and found the chest but it must be bugged, so I'll have to abandon and retake to get it to work. I did find the journal and took that quest, not sure yet where the keys are but i'll keep you informed.

A little brown chest, exactly at 36,30 in Desolace.
Be sure to grab the book (Rackmore's Log) next to it to start the "Claim Rackmore's Treasure!"

Be careful of the Deepstrider Searcher (elite) wondering around that area. He walks by the chest.

I find it strange this questline is considered level 39. The highest mobs you need to kill are level 37. A level 35 could do this quest without much trouble. Mostly single pulls, only occasional double pull. There is a level 39 elite giant wandering around but he is easy to avoid and would kill a 39 just as easily.

okay, that quest was 2.5 hours of my life i won't get back - and in the end after endless swimming, walking and diving, i didn't find it... ggrrrrr...first abandoned quest...
i hope i never come across something like that again!

Not as of 4.2.2 journal is there chest is not useable in anyway..obviously they have moved the quest item...desolace worst zone in loremaster so far..

The quest item is available from killing nagas around Ranazjar Island...thanks for thr outdated info, but this is now confirmed !

Ok.

After being misinformed and misdirected, i searched around.
To unlock this quest and have the darned question mark appear on top of the casket, follow this:

1- Reach level 27.
2- Visit Roetten Stonehammer in the Hall of Explorers in Ironforge, and obtain his quest Reclaimers' Buziness. When you have it, head to Stonetalon Mountains.
3- Obtain the quest Help for Desolace from Hyerophant Malyk in Farwatcher's Glen located in Stonetalon Mountains.
4- Reach Officer Jankie in Desolace (check your ingame map!) and obtain the quest Rerouted! before jumping on her gryphon. When you hit Nijel's Point, search for Corporal Melkins.
5- Obtain the quest Lay of the Land from Captain Pentigast right next to him.
6- Obtain the quest Elune's Gifts from Vahlarriel Demonslayer standing nearby.
7- Visit all three relics, come back and turn in the quest.
8- And finally, search for Kreldig Ungor to obtain the quest The Karnitol Shipwreck.

Read the quest: Quest item comes from killing naga by Ranaziar Island ... Slitherblade Tidehunter and Slitherblade Sea Witch both have tool tip for quest item. Drop rate is low by that's how it is done now (May 2013)

If your looking for the Satchel, go past the ship wreck to the island. I came upon it at about 30.13. It will be found on one of the tidehunters or sea witches. It takes some patience but its there.

Find Karnitol's Chest in Desolace.

Description

Greetings, friend. Have yerself a seat here...

My first order of business is for the mage Karnitol--a noble of some sort in Stormwind. Seems his ship was attacked by sea giants while off the coast in the northwest of Desolace. He and his servants tried to bring one of his more valuable chests ashore, but when the sea giants attacked in droves, he chose to abandon it and teleport himself and his servants to safety.

He wants us to find the chest and its contents, and return it to him in Stormwind.
