As of beta build 26567 there doesn't appear to be anywhere in Atal'Dazar to place the urn.

in build 26629 you place this at the lake in the upper middle section of the Atal'Dazar dungeon. From there Bwonsomdi interrupts you and then sends you on a follow up quest to the necropolis in Northern Nazmir for him to collect the urn from you rather than you leaving it at the lake. The follow up quest is called "You Owe Me A Spirit".

Seems he has some unfinished business to tend to with Vol'jin.

Once you turn in the quest "You owe me a spirit" a pop up achievement in progress is shown to the player; "The fallen Chieftain". As of this build, the questline doesn't go any further.

1. Queue for Atal'Dazar dungeon and get in the party ( I actually did without queuing as Hunter, I run to the lake and Feign Death.. Eeeassyy :) )
2. Follow your way to Vol'kaal. Kill the boss and turn right to lake. (Of course if you are alone, you don't need to kill the boss. But with party, usually you follow people)
3. Click Urn of Vol'jin
4. Bwonsamdi will be in front of you, after completing quest. He will give you another quest which is You Owe Me a Spirit
5. Go to Nazmir and complete it at "The Necropolis"
6. First part of Spirits Be With You achievement is done

You need to go to the Atal'Dazar dungeon.
Can complete it on Normal, Heroic or Mythic difficulty.
I don't think it can be done on m+.

You don't need to kill any boss to complete this quest. However there is a bunch of elite mobs you need to get through if you're planning to do this by yourself. There are also a few skeleton npcs who can detect stealth. It's tricky but it's possible to get through with stealth, just be patient.

Edit: Apparently it requires you to kill Yazma now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I did this as a prot-paladin solo. Mounted up and ran straight for it. Bubbled and placed the urn. Then turned the quest/got the next before they could catch and kill me. Easy peasy- and a little bit cheesy. c:

EDIT: Also noticed something interesting- Turning in the quest rewards Zandalar Rep- The old one not that current Zandalari empire rep.

If you have already done this dungeon on mythic for the week you can use your mythic lockout like I did, when you enter the dungeon it is completely empty and you are still able to do the quest rather than having to do the whole dungeon or death run.

You can totally do this solo, just go right from the start and run, then pop some immunity if you have it. The mobs are fairly slow and probably won't interrupt you.

Now seems to have a prereq to kill Yazma before you place the urn. I stealthed to the urn without killing any bosses and Bwonsamdi won't allow me to complete the quest.

Talanji is starting to like the Horde a bit more, since, like Jaina, she represents a future for the faction.

There should be a rivalry between Jaina and Talanji, since they're both princesses and both are very skilled in magic.

Tried the quest on M+. I was able to use the Urn but Bwonsamdi does not appear. I zoned out, went to normal mode, and cleared my way to him. The doodad was clickable again and Bwonsamdi appears after clicking it.

Once you have killed Yazma dont forget to run back and place the urn before you leave the dungeon...
May sound obvious but I saw 3 people leave straight after they got the urn.

8.0 Vol'jin Quest Chain

You pick up the first quest from Rokhan in The Great Seal. You will only see this quest pop up once you've completed the Zandalar Forever! achievement. This quest chain starts "The Fallen Chieftain" portion of the Spirits Be With You achievement. Note: You will not be able to start this chain if you are on any part of the Zandalari Troll Allied Race quest chain.

The next part of the chain you pick up from Bwonsamdi in the Necropolis in Nazmir. You must have the prior quest chain completed. This quest chain starts the "Justice For The Fallen" portion of the Spirits Be With You achievement.

8.1 Vol'jin Quest Chain

This quest chain requires you to have the 8.0 and 8.1 War Campaign completed (you can check your progress on the War Campaign by opening up your quest log and checking the top right hand corner for any leftover quests you haven't completed). Exalted with the Zandalari Empire as well as have the prior Vol'jin achievement Spirits Be With You.

I hate quests like this!

You finish the dungeon and run as fast as you can for the urn and some moron kicks you from the group and you get ejected from the dungeon before you can get there. I wonder if Blizzard actually plays this game?

Just solo'd normal on a 393 Prot Paladin, specced for survival (heals and absorbs). Very run of the mill experience. So if you don't want to group with idiots (all the other players in the game) and enjoy a solo experience, this is pretty easy. Rezan 4:30 mins, other 3 bosses 3:30 mins each. Trash is fine, just position for fears, so you don't accidentally pull stuff. The only thing in the whole run that hurts at all is the Endboss AOE and that is entirely manageable. I pretty much ignored all other mechanics - so go mad, solo it and get your quest done. If you are a decent tank it's possibly soloable over 380 I guess. GO do it and find out :)

I am doing this quest in 8.3, and different from I read here, I was able to complete the quest without killing any boss or mob. I did as a Survival Hunter, went to the quest spot inside the Dungeon (normal mode) using a mix of Camouflage and Feign Death, placed the urn and Bwonsamdi appeared, completed the quest and sent me to the next part. I hearthed out and went to do it.

For fellow slowbies catching up, this has changed. On Version 8.3.0.33775, there's a lit totem outside the dungeon, near the waterfall on the north side of the complex. I clicked on it, and Ashes of the Warchief completed, giving me 750 Azerite power and 93g 60s.

Then Bwonsamdi appeared, clicked on him and he said "No, no, my little hero. Ya not be leavin' dat here" and gave me You Owe Me a Spirit.

Flew to the Necropolis, gave Bwonsamdi the urn, he said "I have waited some time for dis. Long overdue hee hee…wait a moment." Then I got the Achievement Fallen Chieftain banner, 23g 40s and…done.

No follow up quest from either Bwonsamdi or Talanji, either because I missed something along the way, or because at this point the Princess is now the Queen and no longer gives The Lost Spirit. I went to see her at the throne just in case, no joy. Moral of the story, don't wait over a year and a half to complete a quest.

You can actually just fly into the un-instanced version of Atal'Dazar and place the urn in the same place. No need to run the dungeon.

Yeah, you don't need to queue for the dungeon, there is a path to the right of the normal entrance that leads into the dungeon area, you can just walk (or fly) your way to the totem.

Since it isn't mentioned here: the next quest in this storyline, The Lost Spirit, is picked up in Zanchul in Zuldazar from Bwonsamdi. For some bizarre reason Blizzard completely forgot to link these two steps together.

Doing this today, August 30, 2020, Blizzard either changed it, or it's been reported wrong all this time. So now, to complete this quest Atal'Dazar: Ashes of a Warchief you don't have to fight the last boss. You don't even have to fight any boss. In fact, you don't have to enter the dungeon, you can fly right to the urn and complete the quest. Just take care of some normal mobs running around the area if they get close.

When you click on the urn Bwonsamdi appears and tells you, "No, no, no, my little hero. Ya not be leavin' dat here." That ends this quest and you get another quest You Owe Me a Spirit where he directs you to take the urn to The Necropolis.

At The Necropolis Bwonsamdi says;
"Ay, Vol'jin? Come on outta dat urn. Wait... wait, wait...no! Where be da spirit? Where be Vol'jin?:
"No! No! Impossible. Da boss ain't gonna like dis. Ol' Bwonsamdi not been losin' a spirit in.. oh, dis be bad."

That ends the first part of the achievement Spirits Be With You.

The next quest for the achievement is The Lost Spirit that appears on your map in Zanshul, /way 45.20, 20.17 (the quest icon on your mini map, at least for me, kept disappearing when I got close. Took me a while to find it. The urn was there, but as I got close it was replaced by Bwonsamdi. All this quest wants you to do is speak with Princess Talanji in the Port of Zandalar. She's on the ship on the other side of the dock where your ship is sitting. I love what Talanji says, "If he can't keep track of his own spirits that is a "him" problem, not a "me" problem." Haha That ends that quest.

The next quest Talanji gives you is Spirit Call where you just have to observe Talanji's ritual. At the end of the ritual Talanji asks Vol'jin to reveal himself, which he does and you turn your quest into him.

Vol'jin then gives you the quest Justice for the Fallen where you bloody the Glaive of Vol'jin in G'huun's corpse. You get the glaive when you take the quest. G'huun's corpse is sitting outside the raid, /way 53.90, 64.09 you don't have to enter the raid. You turn this in at Dazar'alor to the Spirit of Vol'jin /way 49.87, 39.59.

The next quest The True Leader of Zandalar is the final quest in the chain which Vol'jin gives you right after turning in Justice for the Fallen where he wants you to present the Glaive of Vol'jin with Talanji to the people of Zandalar. This begins a cut scene. After the cut scene you get the achievement Spirits Be With You.

From the time I took this quest, to the time I got the achievement took 15 minutes.

I am slightly confused by all this though. How can Vol'jin's spirit be lost? He died, not at the hands or even the cause of G'huun, but from the Legion's demons. How would his spirit be lost now? From everything I've seen and read about G'huun, he doesn't care about spirits, only the blood of the living. Once they die, he doesn't have any control over them, that's Bwonsamdi's realm. Another case of the programmers not understanding the lore of wow, perhaps?

Bwonsamdi would have gotten Vol'jin's spirit back in Orgrimmar where he died. Vol'jin might be concerned over all the spirits G'huun has created from his blood lust, however. Would that be cause of his spirit becoming lost? Or was he referring to all the souls G'huun created being lost to Bwonsamdi? I guess that kind of makes sense. Except, Bwonsamdi didn't know where Vol'jin was. He "lost the spirit". Which is in itself a confusing part. If wasn't Vol'jin who was lost but all those other souls and Vol'jin had a plan to release them, why was it that they didn't get released when G'huun was killed in the raid and had to wait until we used Vol'jin's glaive on G'huun's corpse to get his blood on it and then present that to the citizens of Zandalar?

In play, it's great. In logic, it has a few holes in it.

And wowhead, you need to remove the dungeon aspect of your page. This doesn't need a dungeon run to do this quest. Nor does it need a dungeon or raid to do any part of the chain to get the achievement. It's in the location where the dungeon is, but it's "outside" of the dungeon itself.

No need to do the dungeon. Just turn around and proceed to 43.97, 38.44 and follow the path to the top and inside the zone. The mobs are all non elites so you can kill your way through or follow the path further along inside and drop down at the waterfall.

For some reason today (August 8, 2023) this quest shows as available in the Echo Isles. I came here because I couldn't locate the quest even after trying party sync with a lower level character. This was a fix that worked for other issues I had with ghost quests. Thankfully I found out through here that the quest is actually found in Zuldazar. Don't make my mistake and trust the random quest marker in Echo Isles.
