In order to complete this quest, you need to dps the Restless Ancestors below 50% and then use the Quest item.

The turn in location for this quest is bugged. You turn in down in the valley to the northeast at 70 45 to Shieldmaiden Iounn.

Ret paladins, be prepared to get annoyed. What with you having to dps these things down to 50%ish to use the item, and the Ashbringer having a random chance to instantly turn undead below 50% to ash.

I mean sure. Having to do 2 extra isn't the end of the world or anything... Still annoying.

This item only works on the NPC Restless Ancestor after it has been brought to 50% life, it can't be used on the other mobs in the area. Also, you cannot use the item when they are casting Feast on the Living

The quest tracker clickable shortcut for Branch of the Runewood didn't work for me. I found I had to manually use the item from my bag, and then later that hotbaring it also worked.

I had a problem that the quest item didn't work if clicked from the extra button you get on the side of the quest objective text. I put the item on the action bar and then it worked. Hope this helps someone if they are having the same problem.

I just did this quest, 4-18-17, and I only had to get the Restless Ancestor guys lower than 70% and then I could use the Branch of the Runewood. Nice change, didn't take so long and I didn't risk killing them before I could use the branch :D

Some existing misguided info on this..

Even though it has the debuff at 100% health, all you need to do is do "any" damage to the target with just 1 hit (or more) and then use the item. No percentage drop requirement at all but NPC can't just be at full 100% health.

Be sure that you do some damage to the mobs before you use the quest item. If you do not, the mob goes through the animation of being 'laid to rest,' but you get no credit for the quest. I did a single attack, then used the wand. Worked fine that way.

Doing this quest at level 120 with a level 120 follower was fun. I ended up taking all of my gear off and then using a small dot and then I could hit them with the quest item. Getting them to 95% health is good enough, just make sure you damage them a bit, then hit them right away with the quest item.

If you are a level 120, mobs will die instantly while using any of your abilities.

What I found that, you can safely skip this quest as it will not hinder any further progress, allowing you to complete your loremaster - Vrykul Story, Bro, for this zone.

at 120, i took my wep off and puched the mobs once. at 55% you can use the item for credit

It seems to be fixed now. You can do it with a max level char (lv50 as of 9.0 prepatch) without problem.
As long as you are on this mission, you will never one-shot the targets but instead bring their HP to 1 (rest damage is absorbed), allowing you to use the quest item. Just don't use DoT or multi-hit skills.

If you're trying to do this quest at a high level (for loremaster etc) I recommend using the Soft Foam Sword sold by the toymaker in Dalaran!

I completed this in Shadowlands by removing my weapon hitting them once then immediately turning around and using the item.

As stated in a previous reply the Soft Foam Sword is very useful for this quest.

I play as a level 60 hunter on patch 9.1.5 and it was pretty much impossible to damage the Restless Ancestor without killing them. Even if I removed all my gear and used a low level bow.

I found a solution at level 60 in shadowlands. Use interrupt spell, then immediately use branch of the runewood quest item and it works.
I did this with my shaman and had a bodyguard with me that made it more difficult. Soft toy sword would make the body guard attack and one-shot them. So I just did Wind Shear + use branch and it worked.

This quest wouldn't work, so here is the solution to not getting credit for kills:
1. Must hit them with some sort of attack before using the "Branch of Runewood".
2. Kill with "Branch of Runewood", which should show up as a branch icon by the quest, or in your bags.
It should give you credit now...Good Luck!
I played this as a level 54 Demon Hunter, so not killing them right away was harder.

After the release of Dragonlands and getting to lvl 60 with 252 gear there was no way I could do this. With my Demon Hunter completely naked, she was still one-shotting everything in sight. Also, Blizzard has changed the mechanics so that the branch is always auto-use, so you can't even click on the ancestor without applying the branch. Ended up using Vengeful Retreat in order to apply damage and then immediately hitting escape to de-select the ancestor so no more damage was applied. Then when they ran back into range, the branch became active and I could complete the quest.

I then read further and saw the mention of the Soft Foam Sword. I had completely forgotten about that! I dug that out of my toybox and it worked like a charm! I can't recommend highly enough that you pick one up if you haven't already and have it handy for asinine quests like this!

They must have changed something. On my Warlock with all gear on, I can auto attack them (while moving) and they go to 1 health. I then hit escape and used the branch.

HIGH LEVELS: Push 'B' go to 'Spellbook' tab and under 'General' grab the 'Auto Attack' and place on any of your push buttons.
Use it and they will brought down to 1HP and then HIT the ESC button and use the quest item, good game.

For those trying to do this in Dragon flight, I found just walking into the restless ancestor until your character auto attacks then click them as soon as possible works. As long as they have taken damage it will count, no need to remove your toons equipment either

Only thing that worked for me was the following: stripped down, put on autoattack to hot key. Auto x1 and ran out of my own melee range, Then right clicked to channel branch. 2 autoattacks always kill the mob (lvl 70 rogue) and ruined it. 1 autoattack and kite yourself away.

Simply put, the mobs need to be in combat. :D taunt, cc, whatever works fine, no damage needed, nothing besides putting them aggresive toward you.
If you dont have any good cc, just walk on top of them until they hit you, use the questitem and get progress.

as of 10.1.5 unequipping all gear and hitting them with fists it gets them to 1 hp from 4500 if no crit

Doing this 10/14/2023 at 66 on my hunter. I removed all my clothing/armor/gear. I dismissed my pets. I read through all my abilities and decided scattered shot gave the lowest amount of damage then tabbed over to a restless ancestor and whack then used the stick. If you don't get at least some damage on them they will not go gently into that goodnight but will rage, rage... coughs. Seriously though either you whack them too hard with your higher ilevel gear or you don't hit at all so you have to compromise and find an in between. It IS hard to find something that does light damage on a few classes, but I have faith in you--you can do it! And it's only 8 that needs accomplished so you won't have time to get cold on the field!

If you find you can't keep from one shotting them, no how matter disarmed and unarmored, or too low level to use the foam sword, as with my lvl 50 Demon Huntress, EZ Thro Dynamite II worked well, although there's the minute cooldown.

As a level 70 Disc priest, I was able to just strip naked and auto-attack the smallest amount of health off of them with my fists so I could use the quest item. Didn't use any toys or anything.
Edit: They no longer have to be totally "weakened"; any amount of health taken off below 100% will allow you to use the quest item.

As of 3rd of April 2024, the mobs needed can't be one-shot anymore.

No matter how much damage you deal with a single attack, they will always have 1 hp left. A second attack will kill them though, so watch out for dots and any auto-attack spells/buffs.

I was trying to accomplish this task during Dragonflight expansion. Things to note, even though they have the buff the branch will not just work. Running up to and causing them to body agro will also not be enough. You have to cast any ability or attack on them that won't kill them. I was using stuns, silences(even when they weren't casting), and taunts. All of these caused no damage but did allow me to use the item on them for the quest.

I used Skull Bash and/or Incapacitating Roar on them first, then applying the Branch debuff and that worked on my lvl 80 druid.

Description

I would ask a favor, outsider. As you step through the graves of ancient heroes, you will no doubt come across spirits of the restless dead, agitated by the Bonespeakers misdeeds. They must be returned to the earth where they are buried, so that they may be judged as well. Take this bough - it carries with it the essence of the Runewood. Channel its power into a weakened spirit, and it will return to rest.
