Grinning Tolg's Journal drops from orcs that are mind-controlled by the Botani, such as: Enthralled Mutant or Twisted Guardian. Most are found in Gorgrond around 68,30.

Bare bones to the quest.

Fly to Everbloom in Gorgrond and kill the infected orcs to get the journal. I only had to kill one to get it so it might be 100% drop.

The ingredients that are to be collected are at:
Shadethistle planet 57 35.9
Bonethorn plant 68.6 34.2
Steamcap mushroom 59.6 33.2

The cave entrance is located at 60 32.5. Drink from the cauldron twice, and then talk to the reaver there. Avoid the skulls or you will have to return to the cave and drink from the cauldron. The reaver will take you to Gu'rakh which you can mount and ride to the final location. Kill the orc loot his body and then teleport to the garrison for the reward.

Info on the full "Taking from the Taker" quest chain, one of the six quest chain criteria for the Master Relic Hunter (Alliance)/ Master Relic Hunter (Horde) achievement needed to get the Harrison Jones follower with Extreme Scavenger and unique Mentor traits. This chain takes place in Gorgrond, the northernmost Draenor zone.

Bug Notes:

If you collected an item that should complete a quest, but the quest isn't shown as completed, log off and back on (just reloading won't work), click the quest in your quest log, and see if you can click "complete quest".
Leave at least one spot free in your quest log (i.e. 24 of 25), or a quest may become uncompletable going from one quest to the next.
You can not do these quests in a raid group; doing some steps in a raid group can make a quest uncompletable.
If a quest becomes uncompletable, you can return to your garrison, delete the quest, and re-accept the quest on that step of the quest chain from the book of Relic Hunting Notes on the ground next to Harrison Jones. All but the initial quest are also shareable from party members, if you are on the same step of the quest chain.

1. Treasure Contract: The Infected Orc:

Fly to Everbloom Wilds flightpoint ( in Gorgrond) or Everbloom Overlook flightpoint ( in Gorgrond) — you can choose between these separate areas to find mobs for this quest. Everbloom Overlook usually has more mobs and fewer competing players.
Kill Enthralled Mutant (98k health) and Twisted Guardian (195k health) until they drop Grinning Tolg's Journal. They're sparse, respawn slowly, and the journal's drop rate might be 15% or so, so this can take a couple minutes to a couple hours. Killing other area humanoids may hasten their respawn. In Everbloom Wilds, the orcs spawn around , , , , , ; in Everbloom Overlook they are in between the east and west mountain ranges south/southeast of the flightpoint.
Once you get the journal, click the "Click to complete quest" pop-up.
BUG NOTE: If you kill 10-20 infected orcs without getting the journal, and double-checked you're not in a raid, log off and back on, and kill more; it may have been bad luck, but this no-drop bug occurs on other Jones quests.
Bag Space Tip: After you get credit for completing this quest, you can safely delete Grinning Tolg's Journal from your inventory. It's just for interesting reading. Each Harrison Jones quest chain leaves a similar soulbound book in your inventory (click for list).

2. The Silent Skull: The First Reagent: , north of Everbloom Wilds flightpoint, under a primitive rock-covered shelter. Click the purple Shadethistle plant, then click the "Click to complete quest" pop-up. If you're not using coordinates, the shelter is a bit north of a large animal's skeletal remains, northwest of some burning trees and grass. The shelter may obscure the plant a bit depending on your camera angle.

3. The Silent Skull: The Second Reagent: , in the eye socket of the skull of a large animal's skeletal remains. Click the Bonethorn, then click the "Click to complete quest" pop-up.

4. The Silent Skull: The Third Reagent: , click the Steamcap Mushrooms, then click the "Click to complete quest" pop-up. It's in an inactive steam vent with some trees growing in it, which looks like a medium-sized dark crater on the minimap with some orange in the center.

5. The Silent Skull: Taking from the Taker:

5(a), "Brew the Laughing Skull Elixir": From the last quest, head east a few feet, then north along the path to a cave entrance at . Inside the cave to the right you'll see a Cauldron (). Click the cauldron to complete the first of the quest criteria.

5(b), "Drink the elixir and find a way to reach Skulltaker": Click the cauldron again to get a 5 minute Erratic Visions buff; if someone else clicked it recently, you have to wait for a cooldown to wear off, and in a crowd you should spam-click the cauldron until you succeed. (You don't get an elixir item in your bag; you just click the cauldron to drink it). Next find a Brightscale Ravager by the cave entrance, and talk to him ("Can you take me to Skulltaker") — or skip this if you know the way. If someone else talked to him recently, wait until he respawns. Follow behind the ravager southeast, east, then north to while avoiding floating/moving skulls. When you get to , a large hovering ravager, Gu'rakh, will offer to take you to Skulltaker. Click Gu'rakh to complete this step of the quest, and he or she will fly you to Skulltaker.

This step can be challenging. Poor visibility when you have the buff makes avoiding the skulls difficult, and when a skull touches you, you'll lose the buff and need to go back to the cave and click the cauldron again (waiting again if it's not immediately clickable). Some tips:

#1 BEST TIP: Type "/console ffxGlow 0" to reduce the fog a lot, then after you complete this step, type "/console ffxGlow 1" to return to your normal graphics setting. (Thanks Aquifel!)
Stealth abilities (rogue Stealth, druid Prowl, mage Greater Invisibility, hunter glyphed Camouflage) significantly help avoid aggroing skulls. Draenic Invisibility Potion helps too someone said you wouldn't see the Brightscale Ravager.
Alternatively, mounting up just outside the cave lets you move faster, which is an advantage avoiding skulls, or outrunning aggroed skulls.
If you still have trouble seeing the skulls, use first person view, or lower your camera angle and zoom in so you're looking at things from close to the ground, so less fog blocks your vision. Also note that skulls produce a vertical column/pillar of darkness above and below them, which can help spotting them and judging their position.
If you're having trouble seeing where to go, practice the route without the buff; from the cave entrance at , follow the path southeast to , east to , then north to . Putting a target marker on the Brightscale Ravager before talking to it might help, and it leaves a glowing trail, but that disappears fairly quickly, and if he gets ahead of you the marker and trail don't help. You're better off knowing the way, and taking your time to avoid skulls.
Using Aviana's Feather cancels the buff so doesn't help, but if you're in a party only one person needs to reach Gu'rakh with the buff for everyone to get credit for this step, and the others can use Aviana's Feather to glide into Skulltaker's crater to kill Skulltaker (Gu'rakh will only fly one party member).

5(c), "Claim the Silent Skull": When you talk to Gu'rakh, he or she will drop you in Skulltaker's Crater (), where Skulltaker (489k health) is standing atop a large skull. Walk toward Skulltaker, he'll jump down to the center of the crater, where you can kill him and loot The Silent Skull to complete this quest. If he doesn't jump, try backing up and reapproaching.

Double-check that the quest is ready for turn-in, then hearth to your garrison to turn it in to Bodrick Grey (Alliance) or Rokhan (Horde).

If your quest did not complete after looting the journal, just relog, then go to Map - click on the quest - and there is a "complete quest" button to complete the quest.

Its not very worthwhile to pick up a Scouting Missive: Everbloom Wilds (A) or Scouting Missive: Everbloom Wilds (H) to complete alongside this. Only the infected orcs count.

The droprate for this item seems a bit sporadic. I've completed this quest on three characters now.

Toon 1: 1 kill for drop.
Toon 2: 7 kills for drop.
Toon 3: 42 kills for drop.

Toon 3 was a healer too so it took forever. :(

Tip: If you're using premade groups to check out some low pop servers for the The Silent Skull: Taking from the Taker, make sure to not leave the group while you have the buff on you. Transporting back to your own server will remove the buff and you'll have to start over. Also, it bugs out(hah) and you won't be able to see people inside the cave anymore unless you relog.

I used Ghost Wolf on my shaman to get through the floating skulls. If you pull aggro just keep running, as long as you don't stop you SHOULD be fine. If not run back and get the buff again and morph into Ghost Wolf right outside of that little cave. I adjusted the foggy stuff as suggested and it helped me. I waited until I had a near straight shot across, through the skulls.

Be aware before completing the last quest for the achievement if you have multiple wow accounts in your battle.net account!

The achievement spreads out to all logged in characters and you will receive Harrison Jones follower on these toons!
So prepare to log in with chars that still have a lot of low level followers as the mentor trait is absolutely helpful in boosting this followers.

Damn, I did this chain yesterday AND it is listed as complete in my Achievements panel... but I got it again today! Not a happy camper as this sure implies it could take a LONG time to actually complete this what with getting the same quest lines again and again.

For the avoiding skulls part-probably a bit annoying,the easiest way is,after passing first group of skulls,go up the mountain to your left-while keeping on eye on any skull nearby.When near top,you'll see the target npc down to your right,just go for it avoiding most skulls and before the escorting npc will reach the area.Fast and simple.

• Go into the cave & click the Cauldron... click it a second time to give yourself the Erratic Visions buff.
• Speak to the Brightscale Ravager by the cave entrance and click 'Can you take me to Skulltaker'
• Watch out for the floating skulls and their path, which you can see as a Black Cylindrical Cloud around the skulls (as you may lose Erratic Visions buff)
• Once you arrived, click Gu'rakh and it will fly you to the Skulltaker.
• Kill Skulltaker, loot the The Silent Skull.
• Hearth back to your Garrison, and turn in the quest to (Alliance) / (Horde).

The Harrison quests take place in a location where the Apexis dailies can also take place. If you want to maximize your time in a location, be sure to pick up the associated Missive from your Garrison Quartermaster ( Sergeant Crowler or Sergeant Grimjaw ).

You can have both the missive and the daily from the war planning table.

I didn't get the follow up quest (The First Reagent) when I had completed this one, but had to go back to my garrison and get it. And now when I completed that one I didn't get the one after! Why is it bugging like this..?

If you need to pick up this quest (for example you abandoned it in error), you can pick it up from Relic Hunting Notes in your garrison next to Harrison Jones

I farmed for exactly 8 hours at Everbloom Wilds. I went to Everbloom Outlook, and it dropped within 1 minute. No exaggeration. The orcs at Everbloom Wilds most likely do not drop this.

I farmed for 40 minutes at Everbloom Wilds with no luck. Just for a change of scenery, I went to Everbloom Overlook and the item dropped from the 3rd orc I killed.

One poster has already mentioned that this also happened to him, so I suggest trying your luck first at Everbloom Overlook.

I found that mounting up after you leave the cave makes it easier as you can get past the skulls before they tag you .. mentioned this to someone else who was able to fly and just flew to bug at end and skip skuls all together.

It could go without saying I guess, but flying in WoD now makes this quest fast and easy. Just mount up and fly and you never have to deal with avoiding the skulls.

1st Part of the Quest:)

Today, what a pain, but so is reading and when coming to a conclusion...reading ftw. Just like everyone else i was having problems. Went near Everlook Bloom 70.42 , 33.95 Killed my Enthralled Mutant and got it. This was after 30min of looking and logging out then back in!

PLEASE TRY THE LOGOUT/LOGON as posted by another player! this worked for me. Good luck!

This is listed in the comments under the achivement "Master Relic Hunter" but hopefully this will help someone checking in here. I havent seen any post about it, if i missed it and i am double posting i apologise. The quests and the stages in this achivement do not have the same name!

Those skulls were annoying, but luckily a rare spawned while I ran back into the cave to drink from the cauldron again. I finally popped an invisibility after walking out of the cave. It takes you to your 'ride' without getting popped from the skulls. Just do not let the reaver get too far ahead if you need the direction as the blue trail does not linger much.

Extremely ANNOYING quest! LOW DROP rate and LOW number of mobs to kill to get it! I'm about to abandon this and not bother. I have better things to do with my time!

Legion Prepatch--the cheat to reduce the fog in the last phase is not working. :-( Any good ideas for making the fog thin out would be greatly appreciated!

Get to the guy, kill, loot... only coins. Baffled, read the message: daily quest are now reset... *facepalm* I wonder if I'll have to do everything from the beginning or just this step...
Edit: Got offered this chain again - and yes, from the first step. The journal that I'd kept just in case now disappeared.

I carefully carefully read all the comments

what I *didn't* see is that you're supposed to click on the green ravager after drinking the potion! (first 3 failed attempts)

this may be easier on alts who can already fly but for the first pass thru, its smegging *hard*!

I think I drank from the cauldron and followed the ravager about 10 times before I finally managed to avoid all the effing skulls and reach the end point.

but it is necessary to get the Draenor Pathfinder achievement in the first place so....

Just fyi, you can't talk to Gu'rakh in in travel form. I'm sure it's just common sense, but it took me like 5 minutes to figure out why I couldn't talk to him.

Description

In Gorgrond, the Laughing Skull clan has a legend of one called Skulltaker. His mask, known only as the Silent Skull, is legendary among the clan, and could help us learn more about them. Until recently, he was thought to have vanished. Now it appears he has shown his face, so to speak, in Everbloom Wilds. The last orc to have seen him fell to the botani there, but may still have some clues on how you can find Skulltaker and recover the mask. If the botani have him, he may not be cooperative.
