Khadgar is not at the Dark Portal in Blasted Lands; there's a huge Khadgar in Orgrimmar, Valley of Strength, who you must talk to in order to get to the right Dark Portal.

This is the actual description in the quest log. NO WHERE does it say to talk to him in SW. This is VERY misleading.

For Alliance: He is in SW near the visitor's center.
For Horde: He is in Orgrimmar in the Valley of Strength.

Took a while, but worked out, you have to go to Blasted Lands Eastern Kingdoms side. Khadgar is in group of people, not question mark but speech mark. That gives you the next step through the portal.

On Orgrimmar "Big Khadgar" is in Valley of Strenght. Infront of hall where Vol'Jin spends his time.

You can speak to Archmage Khadgar in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms 86.5 63.8 (outside of the Shrine), in Stormwind City 63.3 72.2 (center of the Trade District), presumably at the Horde equivalents, in the Blasted Lands 54.9 50.4 (in front of the Dark Portal), and for all I know other places as well.

Not sure how many are aware but as of 11/14; 7 AM on Lightninghoof, this quest is bugged. I am able to talk to Khadgar but after I see the cut scene it says transfer aborted instance not found. I asked other players around me and they said the same thing.I did notice that maintenance is scheduled so hopefully it gets fixed.. If anyone else is experiencing this please let me know.

(Q) - I lost the quest to The Dark Portal? Now what do I do?

(A) - If you lose the quest or have a problem getting to draenor. I went to The Dark Portal and walked threw The Dark Portal. DONT NOT FLY... Walk.. the The Dark Portal open and let me start the quest on the other side.

I asked a GM and the have no clue how to get there.

Archmage Khadgar is now only located in the Blasted Lands, and has been removed from the main cities.

Once you have the quest, go the underground in drag in Orgrimmar where you have the 1st dungeon of Ragefire Chasm, where the initial portal to outland used to be.

Take that portal & you get teleported to the new version of Blasted Lands.

Once you are in the Blasted lands, go to the dark portal, it is easily located on the map.

you will find Khadgar standing there speak to him, watch animations and you get teleported. Once inside you will be able to return this quest & continue your journey in Draenor.

For those who are looking in Orgrimmar, it's in the drag, underground, beside the mage trainer. Get a guard to pin point it, or go yourself in the cleft of shadow.

1. Warlords of Draenor: The Dark Portal - (Video) - From Stormwind, go to the Mage Quarter, and enter the Mage Tower (entrance @ coords 49.5, 86.7). Click on the Portal to Blasted Lands.

• Once at the Blasted Lands, travel southwest to coords 55.0, 50.3 and click on Archmage Khadgar. Select, "FOR AZEROTH!"
• After the cut-scene, you will be on Alternate-Draenor (where this expansion will be taking place).
• Turn the quest in to Archmage Khadgar (in front of you) at coords 54.6, 48.4, and accept Azeroth's Last Stand.

2. Azeroth's Last Stand - (Video) - Kill one of the Iron Grunt located around the stairs leading up the Dark Portal, and loot the Iron Horde Missive.

• Hit 'Complete Quest,' on your sidebar, and accept Onslaught's End from Archmage Khadgar.

3. Onslaught's End - (Video) - Travel down the stairs, and turn left. Enter the structure on your right (entrance @ coords 52.2, 54.6), where a door gets blown up. Click the Mark of the Bleeding Hollow.

• Exit the structure and turn left, continuing onward and entering the structure on your left (entrance @ coords 52.2, 41.9). Click the Mark of the Shadowmoon.
• Exit the structure and go back to Archmage Khadgar (@ coords 54.6, 48.4), and turn in the quest. Accept the quest, The Portal's Power.

4. The Portal's Power - (Video) - Travel north and drop down, and go underneath the Dark Portal (entrance @ coords 54.9, 45.4 -- see video if unsure what I mean)

• Go to coords 55.9, 46.5 and click on the Mark of the Burning Blade.
• Go to coords 57.2, 48.2 and click on the Mark of the Shattered Hand.
• Go to coords 56.0, 50.1 and click on the Mark of the Blackrock.

• Turn around and go up the stairs to in front of Gul'dan, and click on the Stasis Rune, located in front of him on the ground.
• Exit the chamber and go back to Archmage Khadgar, turning in the quest The Portal's Power, and accepting The Cost of War.

5. The Cost of War - (Video) - Travel east and take the stairs, leading down, at coords 58.6, 49.6. Turn right and go inside the building (entrance @ coords 61.2, 54.6) Archmage Khadgar and friends enter.

• Turn in the quest, and pick up the next one, Blaze of Glory.
• Exit the building, and pick up the quests, Vengeance for the Fallen and Bled Dry, from the quest givers in front of you @ coords 62.1, 53.0.

6. Bled Dry - (Video) - Open the Eastern Bleeding Hollow Cage @ coords 65.7, 54.2.
Open the Southern Bleeding Hollow Cage @ coords 61.1, 62.7

7. Blaze of Glory - (Video) - Travel to the following areas to set the nearby Bleeding Hollow Huts on fire (there are three huts in the vicinity of each of the coords):

• 66.3, 55.8
• 63.7, 50.5
• 61.7, 60.7

8. Vengeance for the Fallen - (Video) - While completing the quests, Blaze of Glory and Bled Dry, kill 6 Bleeding Hollow Orcs in the area (usually while completing the other two quests, you will kill at least this number already).

• Travel to coords 71.5, 62.3 and turn in Blaze of Glory and Bled Dry to Archmage Khadgar.
• Turn in Vengeance for the Fallen to Vindicator Maraad.
• Accept the quest Altar Altercation from Archmage Khadgar.

9. Altar Altercation - (Video) - Speak to Ariok @ coords 72.0, 62.2 and select, "Khadgar has asked us to go distract the Eye of Kilrogg."

• Escort Ariok on the northeast path to the Bleeding Altar @ coords 75.9, 52.8.
• Go up the stairs @ coords 78.5, 49.7, and click on the Blood Ritual Orb @ at the top of the Altar.
• Jump down below and click the two Blood Ritual Orb @ coords 78.0, 53.4 and 76.7, 53.8.
• Travel the path to the northwest and cross the Tar'thog Bridge @ coords 72.5, 46.9.
• Turn in the quest, Altar Altercation, to Archmage Khadgar, at coords 71.9, 40.4, and then accept The Kargathar Proving Grounds.

10. The Kargathar Proving Grounds - (Video) - Follow Khadgar, and turn in this quest, picking up A Potential Ally.

11. A Potential Ally - (Video) - Travel northwest to coords 69.1, 33.8 and use Frostflurry Focus ability (your extra action button).

• After Farseer Drek'thar and Exarch Maladaar are freed, travel the path southeast (where you came) to coords 73.3, 38.7, and turn in the quest A Potential Ally to Exarch Maladaar.
• Speak to Archmage Khadgar and accept the quest, Kill Your Hundred.

12. Kill Your Hundred - (Video) - Follow Khadgar and friends into the Arena.

• You can either stay mounted and run around in a circle, or you can fight the mobs. Either way, Khadgar's friends will combat Kargarth's combatants.
• After 99 combatants are killed, the arena gates will open, and you can follow Khadgar & friends to Umbral Halls. After Khadgar collapses the entrance, turn in the quest to Archmage Khadgar at coords 81.3, 50.3.

FOR ALLIANCE:

There is a portal on the bottom floor of the Mage Tower in the Mage District of Stormwind. That portal takes you to the Blasted Lands. Then fly just a few hundred yards south west to the same side of the portal you went to in order to start questing in Hellfire Peninsula, and Kadgar will be in a group of people near the entrance.

Kadgar has not been in the Trade District of Stormwind for many, many, many months.

Since the launch of Legion this quest is offered on the boards instead of the quest Iron Horde Invasion.

However, The Dark Portal will invalidate the whole questline in Blasted Lands if taken from the board. If you click on the board's quest, it auto-accepts, meaning you'd have to abandon the quest to do the Blasted Lands questline. Instead use the portal in Cleft of Shadow, and head directly to Thrall in Blasted Lands to take the next part of the chain.

As of BFA The Dark Portal is now an auto-accept on reaching level 90 regardless of where you are.

From the Shadowlands pre-patch, this quest is now offered by Chromie for both factions, should you opt not to continue your adventure into BFA content after reaching level 10. it may be again possible to simply head to the Blasted Lands for this Chain without needing to abandon this quest. Yay. You prolly can't do it at level 10 though.

You are tasked to speak with the Vanguard Battlemage in the portal room, who will send you to the Blasted Lands, arriving where you used to get sent by the old Cleft of Shadow portal. Sadly, the quest still invalidates the entire chain here, so either head over to Khadghar to skip the quest chain, or abandon the quest, and talk to Thrall to start the chain.

The quest chain is as follows:

Now you can accept the quest The Dark Portal, head back to the Blasted Lands and continue with the Draenor questline after speaking to Khadgar. If your used a boost, this quest will not be available, but you can still do the Draenor questline by running through the Dark Portal at Blasted Lands

If by some chance you have just Boosted your character to 100, I took the portal from SW to Blasted Lands, then Flew into (through) the Dark Portal for it to start the Draenor scene.

I couldn't get this quest anymore with a level 100 boosted char, neither from board nor from Adventure Journal. Khadgar also didn't offer this quest. Maybe something to do with scaling worlds...
But the next quest is available, I could go through the portal and start scenario, even though the garrison is already fully functioning.

If you have a boosted character and want to start the Draenor quest line you can get the starter quest from Khadgar in front of the portal in Blasted Lands (there's a portal to Blasted Lands in the capitols), just check that you have "show low level quests" enabled.

how to get there in bfa? I got there once with the quest. there's an NPC called Vanguard Battlemage at the base of the stairs in the mage tower that ports me there but I had to go back and now I can't go back again? talked to the same npc and she said there's a portal to Ashran but no such thing exists....

You can start your Warlords of Draenor questline with a boosted character by talking to the NPC at the entrance of Wizard Sanctum (Stormwind portal room) and teleporting to Blasted Lands.

Enable trivial quests on minimap to see low level quests easily.

To skip this and the entire Draenor intro questline, go to Timeless Isle to 66 77 (by the boat between the two isles on the east side of the map) - there's an underwater cave with chairs in. Sit in one and click the campfire to be teleported to gorgrond.

9.2 edit: For a quicker route, you can take the portal from Stormwind/Ogrimmar to Ashran and fly there. Still works like a charm at max level even with the forced timewalking leveling.

Horde: If you need to get to The Dark Portal now you gotta go through the Shattrath portal in the Pathfinders Den. Then use flight path just outside.

If you have already done the pre-quests for the garrison on another character, there is no need to do them again. What you have to do is the following: Once you reach level 90, go to stormwind where the portals are and take the one that goes to Jade Forest. There take the flight path to Timeless Isle (or fly there yourself). Once there start running to the eastern part of it. There you will find a ship that is also shown on the map. Right under water the ship at 70.76 there is a cave. Get in the cave, sit in one of the chairs and while sitting click on the fire in the middle. You will be summoned to Gorgrond in Draenor. From there you will have to fly all the way south to the Shadowmoon Valley and find the quest "Finding a foothold" to start your garrison. From there you will do a couple of quests and then you will build your garrison.

As a mag'har orc, I feel like this questline should destroy the very fabric of the universe, you're going to close the Dark Portal of which should already be closed when you joined the Horde :P

I was able to find Archmage Khadgar by the portal. Make sure you are in the present time though.

After 9.0 prepatch, you can skip the intro scenario by abandoning this quest and walking through the dark portal. No need to use the Timeless Isle campfire or take an Ashran mage portal anymore.

I have 12 characters, but a few months ago I created a new character and instantly leveled him to 50 on startup. After I leveled him to 60 and been playing for many months, I couldn't find the start or possibly already at some point and couldn't find the starting quest. I did the /run print(C_QuestLog.IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(34398)) and it returned "true". So I decided to enter the portal at Blasted Lands, but that took me into something I wasn't expecting and couldn't get out of it without using my Hearthstone. I then decided to go to Orgrimmar and portal into Ashran. This worked, and I could catch a flight to the Garrison. When I got to were the Garrison should be and I could see on the map a quest, but it wasn't actually there. No NPC or item to pick up a quest. I then noticed on the larger map next to the water, south-west of the Garrison, there was another quest available. When I got there, it's considered too low level, so the guy does not have an exclamation point over his head. On mouseover of a few of the NPCs I found I could see Durotan had a quest. After stating with him, it went through a few quest that I knocked out in minutes and there up comes my Garrison. Hope this helps others.

Warning: The mage you're told to speak to does not drop you at Kadgar. Instead, she sends you to the flight point that was added. There's about a hundred elites between you and the dark portal, who will wreck your face if you can't fly over them, and you just blindly charge through them because they have this delightful, short cooldown ability to stun you, send you flying, and knock your health down in just a few hits.

Tank spec is highly recommended if you have one. Just be *very* careful approaching the portal, and you should be fine. Or bring a friend to escort you. :) Not trying to discourage anyone from taking this leveling path. It's fast XP, nicely designed quests that flow pretty well, and you get to kill a lot of orcs. Just don't want anyone else feeling blindsided by the intro like I was lol. I expected a couple of orcs, maybe a hell boar or two. Instead I got ragdolled all over the map lol

I had a level 60 character that I wanted to build a Warlords of Draenor garrison for but I'd never done any Draenor content. By putting together some comments here, I made it happen quickly.

1) Go to the warboard in your capital city and take the quest that says the Iron Horde are invading through the Dark Portal.
2) Go to the Ashran portal and talk to the NPC mage who will port you to the Blasted Lands.
3) Fly over to the Dark Portal BUT DO NOT TALK TO KHADGAR. If you do, you will be started on the Warlords of Draenor intro which is long and unnecessary.
4) Abandon the quest you are on and simply walk through the Dark Portal.
5) You'll end up standing by Farseer Drek'Thar, Thrall, and Khadgar downhill from where your garrison will be. Talk to Drek'Thar to start the quest chain that will result in your garrison being built.

To those who try to follow the "abandon and walk thru portal" and it does not work, do what i did.

Did not work for my chars. did exactly what everyone said to do: Skipped him, abandoned and walked thru. Still brought me to him to start the main long and dumb quest line. Tried on 5+ alts...

IF it does that to anyone, just hearth out.

Proceed to take the Warspear portal and fly to where the garrison "would" be.. Then Fly or run down to the wrecked boat is and accept the quests from Thrall!

Speaking to the Thrallmar Mage in the same room as opposed to the the Vanguard Battle Mage in Orgrimmar dropped me right at Khadgar near the portal.

You can open garrison without all the pre-quests. Fly to Blasted lands, don't talk to anyone or take any quests.
Just fly thru the Dark Portal that all the mobs are coming out of, you will transport to the landing and Prophet Velen and rest of crew are waiting for you to talk to Velen , take finding a foothold, and he leads you up the hill to Lunarfall. All set to do the open garrison quests there.

I am so lost. I got the quests "Warlords of Draenor: The Dark Portal" & "Yrel" but can't complete any of them. I can't reach the locations they show on the map and Yrel is standing in several different spots not moving even though it tells me to escort her to safety? Theres a question mark on the map as if I am to go there and complete a quest but when I move there Khadgar teleports me back and tells me not to move to far. I've been stuck on this for months because I don't understand what the hell the game wants me to do

Don't be like me, make sure your Blasted Lands is set to the present time else your Dark Portal will take you to Outlands instead.
