As of 11/27, Wowhead indicates this quest is no longer available. This is untrue.

The quest may be bugged however as nothing happens for sometime and then O'Breen emotes:

If we can just hold them now, I am sure we will be in the clear.

Shortly after this you have to defeat 3 level 29 naga.

I can confirm this quest is still available in game. Give O'Breen a few seconds, and the quest will complete.

The canon is on the deck of the boat. Head up the ramp, and look for the sparkles on your right hand side.

Quest rewards 350 Booty Bay rep and spillover goblin rep at level 80.

Just completed the quest 4 Dec 2010. As before, this quest seems a little buggy. First wave will come. Let them approach a little then blast them with the cannon. Then WAIT. I waited close to 45 seconds which seemed like an eternity, when a second wave appears. Blast them and complete the quest.

If someone who is hated with Booty Bay is near Shakes O'Breen when the event starts, he will attack that player instead of the naga, stopping the event. You will need to wait until the player moves off the dock and out of the way before trying to restart the event. Fortunately he has about a 15 second respawn time.

Simply kill the first wave. then blast the second wave with the canon.
Do NOT try to kill the second wave aswell, just blast them or the quest will be marked as failed.

I've tried this quest with two different characters on two separate accounts. This seems to be broken as the cannon sparkles but I can't use it. I just had to stand there and kill them as they came without it. The other quests, including those with cannons, have all worked fine.

Cannon still broken in 5.3 - just ignore it.
If the quest doesn't complete, it means that there are a couple of Naga hiding.
I noticed 2 of them run off & hide behind the hill. The first time i didn't notice them there, so I abandoned & re-aquired the quest (Shakes disappears & re-appears after 3 to 5 secs).

So, if this quest has not completed, have a look behind the hill in the direction from which they came!

It seems that the cannon does "work" - it's just that the animation doesn't happen. If you click on the cannon as the Naga come down the slope, they will die as if they had been shot. So it is shooting - you just can't see it!

Quest still broken. No animation when you click the cannon and no visible effect on the Naga either. They just keep on running to Shakes having taken zero damage.

Fight them below on the dock as they run at you in triples. If they 'run away' in fear before you kill them, they'll either go stand on the hill up the path, or hide behind the hill. The quest won't complete if you don't go get them and kill them. Don't worry, the quest will still complete even if you kill the last of the Naga up there on/behind the hill. That's what happened to me just now. :)

This quest is bugged, but its still doable. Don't let any of the naga run away, and you will complete this without a problem. L/R chars won't have an issue with this, but for S/R chars, the quest can bug out.

DON'T ABANDON THE QUEST

There's no need to abandon the quest, even if it's bugged out, because you can still complete it. The cowardly naga don't run too far, so you can polish them off by venturing out after them. Be careful, however - the quest is a radius-based fail, so if you wander off too far, you will need to start over.

Please note: Statistics record abandoned quests, but not failed ones, so you can simply accept the quest again, which will replace the one you have open without chalking up an abandoned quest.

This quest is still available.

1. Go up on the ship. There is a black cannon which is twinkling on the ship.
2. Stand next to the cannon.
3. Look at the direction where the cannon is targeting.
4. When nagas are appeared on the hill and right after they are starting to come down then click on the cannon while a cursor is shown as a gear icon.

- There will be no sound or animation for cannon been fired (probably it is bugged).
But you will see nagas are being hit as they are falling down silently.

5. Repeat around 4 times (there will be around 4 waves) until the quest is completed.

Note: Cannon has a cool down so don't click too much. Just wait till ready to shoot. And one shot will be a strong enough to kill all nagas in each wave.

You are required to stand on the ship during the entire duration of the quest. If you leave the ship during the encounter the quest will be marked as failed, even if you have full capability to defeat the nagas by hand.

Just completed this quest at lvl 100, tried many times with the cannon, but it didnt work at all. I just sat down at the questgiver and killed the 3 waves of 3 nagas each just after they attacked the NPC.
So dont use the cannon, kill them as you usually kill any other mobs and you should be fine, good luck .)

So, just ignore the cannon it doesn't work or do anything.

Kill all the waves, if you are waiting for a while look where the nagas come from, sometimes two of them get stuck on the hill.

You can't actually go to them because you will be too far from Shakes and the quest will fail, but you can inch close to them and pull them with a ranged ability.

Once you kill those last two bugged nagas the quest completes.

A lot of people are saying the cannon doesn't work... They're right in a way. However, I just completed this quest using the cannon. It has no animation and only 1 of the 3 shots I "fired" had audio. 3 naga will gather on the hill where the cannon is facing. Once they begin to move down, click the cannon and all 3 will die.

I tried this quest this morning, and the cannon is completely gone.
I had to stand close to Shakes and help him nagas in three waves of two to three.

As of April 22, 2018, this quest is still available and still required for Loremaster, however, it is even more buggy than years prior.

The cannon does not work at all. It does not sparkle, there is no option to click any of them. And if you leave the deck by further than a few feet, it automatically fails you. You can no longer get closer to the hill to range shot them.

This took me three tries tonight. The first one failed me very quickly as I barely walked off the deck and it considered it out of bounds. The second try, only two waves came through. After five minutes of nothing, I came here to read the comments. I tried logging off and back on, but it did not complete the quest so I abandoned it again.

The third try, I stayed on the deck. I waited until the Naga got to the deck before killing them, and the waves came MUCH quicker. There was someone running through on the last wave and it aggroed them, but they kept running and the Naga eventually came back and down to the deck. This method completed my quest. I have a feeling that if another person kills them because they aggroed, it will not allow you to complete it so be watchful of your surroundings prior to accepting this quest.

Standing close to Shakes O'Breen and killing the nagas standing on the pier seems to do the trick currently. As people have said, no cannons, so don't even try going up the ship. And if you are a high level, don't kill the naga off too fast - wait until Shakes notices them, too.

Description

This is bad. It seems the Daggerspines are amassing for an attack.

Naga are known for their ruthlessness in battle. They will keep attacking until I am dead.

I don't value my own life above that of my crew members, but you must help to defend me. The crew will not be able to make it back to Booty Bay without my knowledge of the seas.

The naga will be coming from the sea. I need you to remain up here with me to fend off the attack. Man the cannon and drive them back.
