Same. Prot warrior here also, took 3 times to get credit. Finally just aggroed from the beginning and reflected his lightning bolt back or shield bashed him, interrupted him for a bit. Seemed to work.

as full prot got to this guy and blown the horn to start the fight. after killing him I got no credit.. rinse and repeat about 10 times trying ways to get the credit on my own..tryed DPS like mad.. or letting the NPC tank tryed killing him with both NPC's dead. nothing would get me credit for this guy.. then in came another warrior and by the looks of the two huge 2h he was holding up with each hand easy to see he was fury.. got him in group and got credit the moment he dropped...

Still broken as of 30/11/08. Tried 4 times as a prot warrior, even tanking all the way through didn't work. Contacted a GM and apparently they're aware of the bug and are fixing it. Their advice was to drop the quest and try some time in the future.

As a prot warrior, you almost HAVE to tank this to get enough damage for credit. Reflect as many Lightning Bolts as you can, and interrrupt the Spark Frenzy every time. Spam Devastate and rage dump with Heroic Strike and Shield Slam.

And have Enraged Regeneration available as well, in case a Shield Bash misses on Spark Frenzy.

I just did this quest as prot warrior, had troubles doing it, as many others have experienced. It seems though, that it has nothing to do with the amount of damage you output (since I checked with recount, and the 2nd last time I did almost 36k dmg out of 100k, and did not get the kill, and the last time I did around 34k, yet got the kill). I think the most important part is actually for you to tank all the way through. Either that or it compares the three of you and it is important that you have most DPS. In that case, I was very lucky the last time as they must have done almost exactly evenly damage. Thank god this is over.

Here's the strategy that worked for me. As a prot paladin, I was able to solo this quest.

(1) Blow the horn, start the fight

(2) Let the elite NPC flighting alongside you to gain aggro while maintaining a healthy amount of dps (blow wings, trinkets etc).

(3) The elite NPC will eventually die and you will gain aggro. By this time, the boss should be low on health.

(4) Finish off the fight and gain credit.

When you blow the horn, 2 NPC's will assist you:

Bouldercrag the Rockshaper says: At last, the tyranny of the stormforged is at its end!
Bruor Ironbane says: No more will your minions assail the creatures of stone and their allies.

Valduran the Stormborn says: How predictable! But then, who would expect a rock to think like anything other than one?
Valduran the Stormborn says: If you're so eager to fight, I'll oblige you. But know that nothing you do here can prevent the completion of the iron colossus!

This took me three tries as a Resto Druid. On the third try, the sidekick bugged and Rockshaper got owned. I had to finish the fight alone.

I just did it as a prot pally. I popped up my damage meter so I could check to see how much I was doing. I got 51k damage, just enough for credit. Here is how to do it.

Buff with Blessing of Might
Take of Righteous Fury
Seal of Corruption and Judgement of Wisdom
Use every damage skill you have: Judgement, Hammer of Righteousness, Shield of Righteousness, Consecration, and Avenger's Shield.

If you have any bombs or trinkets, use them.

If your threat gets a little too high for you, pop Hand of Salvation on yourself. (Never thought you'd do that, huh?)

If your dps is not high enough, pop Avenging Wrath.

I was able to do this without poping my wings, but I had some Saronite Bombs, So I think all prot pallys should be able to do this now. Remember, all you need to do is deal 50,001 damage.

As many of you other prot brothers and sisters! ive tryed this first at around lvl 77 and could not get the credit kill as protection warrior, i guess i was blue / purple geared of best pre tbc like t6, tryed to switch to dps kit greenish / blue and no result.

Now im lvl 80, pretty much total naxx geared 3x t7, all epixed out eccept for blue sholders, cloak and rings, even thoug i got the twice amount of all stats (at least) still no credit kill, i was sitting and drinking and some lvl 78 greenish geared fury warrior came to do it, so for fun i popped an invite and i got instant credit kill.

never saw the bug where one of the nps's flee or never show's up before now, but for all u others that goes trugh same pain, get a friend to help at least until blizz fix it hopefully in next patch or so.

79 fury warrior couldn't keep dps low enough to not pull aggro and I was quite flimsy against him. Popped on my tanking gear and spammed shield bash and spell reflection. Didn't get credit first time I downed him. Killed him again taking note that my damage was 54k and I got credit.

Also, I only got one elite NPC to help after blowing the horn. After I got got credit an 80 orc lock walked in and blew his horn and two elites spawned. Another warrior posted earlier he had two elites by his side so I don't think it's class that makes the difference. What gives? Very odd quest.

I see a lot of advice for prot paladins but litlte for holy.

It might be a gear thing (as I'm doing these simply for achievement rather than as a leveling quest) but the lightning bolts and lightning aoes weren't strong enough for me to worry about.

What I did was threw up retribution aura, grabbed aggro immediately from the two mobs, and spammed consecration with seal of martyr up and judged that on cd as well as using holy shock on cd. I had no problem getting completion with this technique.

Did this in one go as a prot pally. I just spammed concecrate, hammer of the righteous, avenger's shield and hammer of the righteousness. Made sure seal of corruption was fresh, and used avenging wrath. After I drew aggro, I used holy shield to add to my dps. Used lay on hands once. Popped a mana pot to keep the mana up. Completed at lvl 79. Hope this helps out prot pallies.

As a Prot warrior, I did this one solo just now. Put a second weapon in my offhand in place of my shield, went berserker stance, spammed WW, Heroic Strike and Devastate, and got credit for the quest. This is definately a viable strategy!

He does not move from his loacation.
While i was fighting him another player came in and hit him. I ended up dieing and the other person ran out of the room. I was able to fly back, rez and kill him before the other person lost aggro and made him reset and completed the quest.

Im not sure if that will help anyone, but after 4 tries, i wasnt going to complain.

someone might have said this... but i just did this quest, i moved behind him and i stopped taking damage... before i moved behind him i got down to 83% health, i moved behind him and stayed there, when the fight was over, i was still around 80%. only time i lost health was when he did the spinning thing.

if youre a feral druid, go cat form and mangle the hell out of him when you can. avoid the aoes, and regrowth when you can. you dont need to pull aggro, but you do need to do a certain bit of damage. i did this four times as a bear, not pulling aggro, not doing much damage, and never got creidt. as a cat, only had to do it once.

Any advice for a shadow priest? I've tried this quest and i still can't get credit. I've tried letting the 2 npc's get aggro but one ends up dying. I've tried getting aggro and i end up dying pretty quick. I am starting to think this quest is impossible.

What a screwy quest! 100% Prot Pally tried three times to do the quest. Got all the bugs everyone has talked about; first time only one NPC came to help; second time both showed and we killed it and I got no credit. Went back to the quest giver and abandoned the quest and took it again. Went back and still no credit, after making sure I held the agg the entire fight. I was about to give up when a 'Lock showed up. We grouped and we BOTH got credit. Hope Blizzard unbugs this in the next patch!

Yep... had to complete the quest 3 times in order for it to finally credit the completion on the 3rd attempt. Definitely a buggy quest. Easy to complete though.

I also noticed that somtimes only one of the dwarfs that help you fight him shows up. I would just step back and shadowmeld until the fight ended, and then blow the horn again.

Don't try to heal the Dwarfs! I tried several times to get this quest done by aiding the dwarfs and healing them, didn't work! When I tried to let them do their job and sticked to DPS Valduran myself, I succeeded the first time. Did this as a shadow Priest.

Eventually succeeded as a holy paladin. 54k damage was sufficient for the kill credit. To the other holy pallies out there: Holy Shock, Holy Shock, Holy Shock. Pray for crits. You'll get him eventually.

Prot Paladins don't use Blessing of Sanc or Righteous Fury use just Blessing of might instead.
Don't bother with holy shield since you shouldn't pull aggro.
Use Seal of Corruption and spam consecration, Hammer of the Righteous, Shield of Righteousness, Avenger's shield, and judge

3/04/2009: Quest still confirmed bugged.

I'm a protection paladin, and after reading all these comments it looks like I'll just have to get a guildie to help me DPS the bastard. I opened a GM ticket, but there's probably (unfortunately) nothing they can do.

ETA: GM confirmed previous complaints of this quest, and he told me the matter is being researched (but no ETA on a fix). He agreed that adding a friend's DPS will more than likely remedy the problem.

Well thanks for all the comments about not getting the kill. It happened to me too as a prot warrior the first time. So I switched to ARMS and used Shockwave, Shield Slam and ultimately to increase DPS a couple of slams with Execute and got the kill.

Tried this quest solo (lvl 78 dual wielding warrior)

Killed him 4 times, never got credit.

Then I read this post and started figuring out what the problem could be...

When I solo-ed him 1 or both dwarves was/where dead when Valduran died, but both dwarves said something different after he died.

While reading this post an other player came by and we decided to do the quest together, but just healing the dwarves, not fighting the guy.

When he finally died both dwarves where still alive and we both got credit, even though the other player was dead at that moment...

I guess that must be the problem...

Ok please don't hate me for this... I just did it as blood spec DK. Only had to do it once. I hadn't read the comments here before I tried it so I just went in tank gear, frost presence and tanked him the whole fight.

Unfortunately recount didnt record it for some reason, so I got no real numbers, but I didnt really take much damage. Death Strike and Rune Tap were more then enough to keep me close to 100% health.

I can't do the quest. The first time, both NPCs showed up like they were supposed to, but I died. So the next time I did it, only one showed up. Every time I died and redid the quest, the one that showed up would alternate. I eventually noticed that the second NPC WAS spawning, but it was spawning behind me outside and dying before the battle started.

I did manage to do the quest once by running around to avoid the ridiculous and unsurvivable damage he does while using Arcane Barrage, but I didn't get any credit. It's so hard to get things lined up just right... both NPCs, don't draw aggro, do enough enough damage to get credit. How in the heck am I supposed to do this?

EDIT: I did the quest AGAIN, and managed to use Arcane Missles fast enough to kill him even though only one NPC showed up, and my threat somehow didn't skyrocket this time. But it still didn't give me credit. Why?

EDIT2: I did the quest yet again, and this time, by luck, both of them showed up. I managed to do what I did in the first quest, even using invisibility once and taking time to kill an Iron Dwarf that spawned in the middle of the battle as well. I didn't do nearly as much damage as in the first battle, but this was the one that counted. I think this is really bugged.

As of 4/22/2009, game version 3.1.1, this quest is still buggy. I just killed him twice on my prot paladin, and didn't get credit for it either time. Both times the horn blowing and NPC summoning went fine. They both showed up, said their speech, and the fight began. First time, I pulled aggro and tanked the elite myself (I'm well geared). Burned him down fairly easily, had to toss a few heals to myself I guess, and when it was over...nothing. No credit. Did it again, this time shut off righteous fury and let one of the NPCs grab aggro. Once again, we killed the elite and neither I nor either NPC died. And once again, no credit for the kill. It's not a DPS thing, either, because the first time around I poured it on and when I do that, I'll put out around 2300 DPS. If that's not enough to "participate," then this quest is crap. I reported it to Blizzard, but of course 3.1.1 has only been out for a week and dual spec is pwning the GM trouble queue.

This quest sucks. Watch out for it. Walk away, if you can.

EDIT: Blizzard response to my GM ticket, via email, was "We know about the problem and are working on a solution. Watch worldofwarcraft.com for information." Yay, support? I have heard that the quest works for groups more reliably. I'm going to dual-box my paladin and druid together. If this works, I'll update this comment again.

EDIT2: I caught my druid up to my paladin in the chain, and they did the quest together, dual-boxing. I did NOT abandon the quest on my paladin first. I did nothing except join him with my druid. Encounter went as before. Blew the horn, two guys show up and give a speech, fight begins. Druid healed the paladin, cast DoTs and some Wrath. I didn't go particularly hard at it, because I wanted to be sure it wasn't "do omgwtfbbq DPS" that was the key. So we slacked through it, in fact one of the NPCs took aggro from the paladin. In the end, everyone was alive and this time we got credit, both characters. So, if you are bugging on this one, get someone to join you. It DOES seem to work more reliably for a group.

I just did this quest roughly 8 or 9 times, without getting credit, using a different strategy each time. I tried outdamaging the npc's, hittting him from behind, using the horn at directly in front of him within the circle, etc., and nothing worked. This must be Blizzard's idea of a joke if players were actually able to get credit at some point and this was working as intended. This quest is all I need to make 100 for the achievement.

EDIT: I got some help from an 80 dk and before I could hit my spell reflect he was dead and I got the credit.

Ugh what a crappy quest for prot paladins. Three times I did this quest. Survived the first two, died on the third. Still no credit for killing the dude. What I did was:

1. Came in and started the fight.
2. Moved in behind while the talking took place.
3. With seal of corruption on, spammed all damage related spells. Using judgement of wisdom to keep the mana fresh. Used concencrate, hammer of the righteous, and avenger's shield over and over.
4. I took damage but not as much as standing directly in front. Didn't even have to use lay on hands although I probably could have.

Hope this helps. As of May 9th, this bug still has not been fixed.

Priests: Don't heal the two allies, then it won't count! Just dump as much damage on it as you can. I was able to do it easily after I figured that out. Don't worry if they die or not, just focus on killing it as fast as possible.

After reading the comments I was a little leery of this quest soloing as a 79 Combat dagger Rogue (with no real special gear). As suggested earlier I used anesthetic poison (to help reduce threat), popped an agility and fortitude elixer and ate some northern sculpin for the extra stam and AP. Stealthed in then blew the horn, which left enough time for the vanish cool down to restealth before the fight. Let the two NPCs begin the fight for about 10 secs or so then just began hitting him from behind (ambush, SS, eviscerate repeat till dead). I didn't pull aggro once and was only hit by his AOE Spark Frenzy 6 times for about 350 hp each time - only 2100 hp total). I don't think I really needed the elixers or food - but they didn't hurt. I think the key is to back away let the NPCs start the fight and build aggro before you take part.

As a mage, I did it several times. My attempt that got the quest complete was when I pulled aggro off the two Elite NPCS.

Hello all,
Seriously, something should be mentioned in the quest dialogue somewhere about what is needed to complete it.
As a resto druid I just healed the summoned helpers and dps'd in between...a no go. No credit for the kill. I did pull aggro during the fight but didnt' have it at the start and at the end.

Just let the summoned helpers die, or at least the one who holds most of the aggro.

Steps:
1. Get the 1st hit and initial aggro pull.
2. Let the helper who holds most of the aggro during fight die,
3. You'll pull aggro after he's dead,
4. Hold aggro at end of fight.
5. Done....get credit.

After reading other comments, I feel a little bad about only needing one try, so I've provided as much info as possible.

L80 Shadow Priest: Killed the magus nearby, and summoned from where he'd stood. Moved to the center, slightly behind the summoned dwarves. I let the Dwarves get the first shot in (Vamp Touch has a cast time). Ignored damage to them (they lived, anyway) and just unloaded and killed him as quickly as possible. I found it very easy with the buff provided by the helpers. Did not take meaningful damage, myself (was at full health due to Vampiric Embrace), and didn't even bother with Power Word: Shield. Confirmation came maybe 2 seconds after he died -- as I turned to face the dwarves.

Did not pay attention to whether I pulled Aggro at any point, though I should have so I could report that - it is likely that I did.

However, for healers not getting credit by healing, I suspect this works like other fights where you must deal a certain amount of the damage done to get credit (usually 50% or so, IIRC)...so maybe it's not necessarily a question of pulling Agg, but simply out-damaging two NPCs? But then some of the posters here who did not get credit surely must have done enough - despite the earlier mentioned GM's assurance that adding a friend's DPS should help. Maybe the time it takes to kill him?

Would be nice if Blizz could confirm what the issue is and not just say "add a friend's dps" to those having problems.

It's a bit of a shame that level-capped characters only gain the Experience Compensation, rather than both that and the normal cash reward, as it nearly halves the potential monetary value of this quest. A bit of a pain when saving for Epic Flight.

As a fire mage, I switched to Mage Armor and tried to keep Mana Shield up the whole time. I also just kept hitting Counterspell when I could and hit him with some DPS. I couldn't get him any other way.

Being somewhat of a noob to WoW, or to playing a solo enhanced Shaman anyway, I read all the notes above but still died twice even though avoiding his spells in the ways suggested while doing as much casting as I could to contribute to the battle.

But then I realized that I would probably do better playing to my template's strengths (DUH!). So while the NPCs discussed the coming battle and issued their challenges, I walked up next to Valduran rather than heading to a corner or a table. As soon as Valduran attacked and Bouldercrag had the aggro, I dropped my usual melee totems and commenced whacking him with as much melee damage as I could muster. It seemed that all the lightning bolts landed outside the circle I was dancing around him. I never got the aggro and by circling him constantly, took hardly any damage.

As an 80 MM hunter, the first time I kinda of stood still, near his side after blowing the horn, and his bolts tooks me down in no time. Trying to stay in the crags helped not at all.

The second time, much more successful, was to run in a semi-circle behind him, keeping in motion the whole time. Kept CS, ArS, and AS going when off CD, autoshot otherwise. Never got below 90% HP, and never popped a trinket.

Pretty easy. I used a lot of DOT abilities; that seemed to help and stopped me from getting most of the aggro. Also, make sure the extra mob in the same room doesn't respawn as you're fighting.

Just did this on a level 78 Assassination Rogue (came here first to check for pointers of course). Based on some of the comments, I got him on the first try and pretty much did nothing.

Blew the horn, waited for the dwarves to come and speech-ify, dropped a fel bomb and then just stayed out of the way of the lightening bolts and circles on the floor, hid out in the niches in the wall. I did no other damage and just let the NPCs handle it. Neither of them died and I got the credit for it. Dumb luck, maybe?
