I leveled from OL up to 80 as prot and I didn't feel it went slow at all. Well as long as I grouped up multiple mobs so I had plenty of rage, but unless it was attacking one thing at a time I felt it went really fast with no down time.

This is almost the same as me. My first toon was a warrior and I loved him to bits. After he got to 70 I decided to make a shaman, and well things turned bad for my warrior. For some reason when WotLK came out I didin't even bother going to my warrior. I just stuck to my shaman and geared him up and now hes running heroic Nax. My warrior just kidna sits there at lvl 72. I'm thinking about switching him to Fury, but I am not sure yet.

With t5'ish protgear I had loads of fun personaly. I just pul about 10 mobs and aoe them to dead. Grinding as prot did about 1k DPS at lv 71 wich isn't to shabby.

you didn't say much about your playstyle as prot, but don't make the mistake of trying to go dual-wield devastate or anything like that.
for soloing, stack SBR/SBV and pull big groups - always have your shield equipped, and the titanium spike is a cheap enchant that is great for leveling.
