There is a full proof way for targeting all of these mobs. The end result is three macros, but you only need to push the third one. Make three macros to start with.

The first macro:

(It isn't a bad idea to add a /target Time-Lost Proto-Drake line to the second macro since you have extra room, that will target the rare mob in storm peaks that drops a mount of the same name.)

The Third Macro (edited so you can right click, left click, or hit the bind for the third macro for it to work - also note that you need semicolons after the first MultiBar line, not commas.):

(Third macro will be different depending where you place the first two on your bars)

Instructions: After making these three macros you need to place the first two on your bars (preferably next to each other and on the same bar for simplicities sake). Then you need to figure out what bar they are on (the third macro still works if you use a bar mod, but generally you want to keep it on Bars 1-6 of your bar mod).

To find out which bar your macros are on I suggest do the following (If you are using a bar mod it is a good idea to turn on your old Blizzard Action bars to figure out which of your Bars correlates with the Blizzard bars).

MainActionBar - Your Main Action Bar, it is the first bar you ever see when you start WoW.
MultiBarBottomLeft - On the ActionBars panel in your Interface Options this is the equivalent of your Bottom Left Bar option.
MultiBarBottomRight - On the ActionBars panel in your Interface Options this is the equivalent of your Bottom Right Bar option.
MultiBarLeft - On the ActionBars panel in your Interface Options this is the equivalent of your Right Bar 2 option.
MultiBarRight- On the ActionBars panel in your Interface Options this is the equivalent of your Right Bar option.

Buttons: MainActionBarButton1 would be the first button (starting on the Left) of your Main Action Bar, MainActionBarButton12 Would be the last button on your Main Action Bar (for your Right Bar/Right Bar 1 its from Top to Bottom). So in my Third macro example

Once you have your third macro properly adjusted it should now work. Clicking or hitting the keybind for that macro will attempt to target all 23 mobs in both macros combined (in one click). You can use this for Bloody Rare to make the macro more accurate.

Also while testing to see if you selected the right buttons for the third macro I would suggest adding a line to target yourself in one of the first two macros for testing purposes. That way when you click / hit the keybind for the third macro and you target yourself you know you did it right.

I hope they include one like "Nessingwary Who?" for getting "Frostbitten", "Bloodyrare", and another achievement for killing all the rare elites on Kalimdor and The Eastern Kingdoms. Give you either a title or some epic gun, bow, crossbow, or thrown weapon. That would be awesome IMO.

Some of these mobs -- especially Loque'nahak -- will require late night/early morning/weekend camping, unfortunately.

King Ping - Primary spawn area is where people do one of the Kalu'ak dailies, so he gets killed in short order.

Icehorn - The tons of Death Knights or alts leveling in Borean Tundra are likely to nab this guy pretty early after it spawns.

Old Crystalbark - Same deal as Icehorn.

Vyragosa - So many people are searching for the Time-Lost Proto-Drake that she goes down very quickly.

Loque'nahak - On my server, there's at least one hunter camped in all of its known spawn locations every time I go check. Have all your attacks/buffs ready, fly close to the deck and start spamming DoTs or ranged attacks if your macro tags it.

Completed Frostbitten yesterday after trying to nab Vyragosa for several days.

Quite a fun hunt, but I really hope Blizzard doesn't implement a similar achievement for the old-world rares. Tons of those suckers.

If you are in a party or raid when the rare is killed, and you are within 'credit' distance (IE close enough to gain XP and roll on items dropped), then even if you did not attack the rare, you will get credit for the kill. However, if you are in a party or group, and beyond that range, you will get no credit for the kill at all.

The moral of the story: there is no way to share the achievement without having to share the goodies from it. Sorry. ;)

These maps may not be 100% accurate but they are locations I've seen them in OR have had multiple eye wtiness accounts towards the areas. I hope these are good resources.

Just finished this achievement on the Spirestone realm, last one on my list being King Krush. Took about 12 hours of camping each day for 3 days in a row (3 corpses, so mad) but finally... flying south from Nesingwary Camp, targetted him just south of the bones of Nozronn... fear away the rogue who landed right beside me and kick the crap out of King Krush as my heart starts racing so fast. Great feeling to have that achievement flash up in front of me!

Took about 2 months from the time I started working on this achievement until its completion. Some of them seem to take some work to get (King Krush, Vyragosa, Loque'nahak, Zul'drak Sentinel) while some others seem to be up very often (Crazed Indu'le Survivor, Scarlet Highlord Daion, Griegen, Terror Spinner). It was a good mix of ups and downs and by far the most fun I've ever had completing an achievement. My large collection of blue BoEs grew quickly and now it's finally time to ship them all out and watch the profits roll in.

If I had any hints to give for anyone working on this achievement, it would be, based on my many hours of observation, that rares spawning will tend towards hourly increments after your server comes back online after a restart. I've personally witnessed several rares (Zul'drak Sentinel, Loque'nahak, Putridus the Ancient) spawn right under my nose at exactly X number of hours after server restart. Many shortly before or shortly after, but definitely cluster close to those hourly increments.

Also, don't be afraid to ask in general or trade chat and try and find some timelines of different rares killed on the continent. There have been a few occasions where shortly after Vyragosa or Time-lost was killed in Storm Peaks, Loque'nahak would pop up in Sholazar, and this would continue to happen for a few days. Try and find these relationships. Observe patterns in your kills and try and recruit friends to camp different areas across the continent. Make educated guesses then fly out there and get 'em =]

If a friend finds a rarespwan and tags it, you can invite him, go to where he is and get credit for the kill. If ur close enought ofc. (Did it today with "Dirkee")

Just a PSA... Loque'nahak is ~~the only Spirit Beast in-game~~ the only Spirit Beast with his model and unique sounds, King Krush is the only devilsaur with the green skin, and Aotona is the only tameable parrot; all are highly sought-after by hunters, Loque'nahak especially. Mercifully, the other tameable rares, the newer Spirit Beasts (Gondria, Skoll, and Arcturis) aren't on the Frostbitten list, but they'll still be killed by people who think of them as loot piñatas.

If you see a hunter taming any of them, be considerate and let them tame. You will not get the achievement for killing it (it will be tagged to them), they will, since they've tagged it, and trust me, it's a long and stressful hunt for any of them. So don't be a jerk and ruin other people's day. If you see them and there are no hunters in the immediate vicinity, go ahead and get your achievement. :]

It really breaks my heart when I hear about a hunter who, after long weeks of searching and finally locating their beast, has it pointlessly killed in front of them. So please be considerate.

After learning of it, I refer you guys to this post. The addon mentioned allowed me to put the full names of every single Northrend and Outland rare along with the added raid warnings and sounds in a single button macro making the achievements amazingly easier.

easily the hardest part of this achievement is the 3 mobs in sholazar and the 2 in storm peaks

sholazar mobs are camped by hunters, grinded by miners and herbers, and is visited by many doing the oracle/frenzyheart dailys

storm peaks is just loads of people going for time lost proto drake

so if you kill any of these, just /yell and tell, it saves those poor hunters and mountfarmers quite a few hours since they then know its not up for a few hours

Been doing full laps around all the spawn points early in the morning and sometimes during normal 'raid times' (like Wednesday ~18.00) and rounded up most of the rares by luck. It was a relief to finish Borean and Howling Fjords, as it cut my travel time in half.

While leveling I found and killed Dirkee and Vryagosa, so I had those when I finally decided to go for Frostbitten, but I must say - I've never seen them up after that. I've tried to spot the Time-Lost Protodrake a few times with a macro which targets all rares in the zone, but had no real luck with either. I reckon these can be troublesome.

As a tip, the rares in the most desolate places are the ones you'll most probably encounter. Start doing *full* laps searching for everyone, making your own kind of route while doing so until it becomes routine. Rares like King Ping and Terrorspinner was very easy to find, and all the Icecrown-rares are also so large that you can both target and spot them from great distances. (Putridus is a great example - with a target-macro you can get him from 700+ yards away). Also: Most, if not all, the rares are soloable by any class. Though you might have problems with Putridus and King Krush if you happen to grab adds or can't counter fear (in that order). Bring a healer if you must.

Seething Hate and Syreian was the last two for me before Sholazar Basin. Been doing laps around Sholazar at regular intervals now for a few days, and luckily discovered King Krush while discussing "how hard it was to find rares these days" with another guy. This will be the toughest zone for most medium+ populated servers, I guess, as it's both a great grinding zone, a place you level in, a miner's dream, and the rares are also sought after by hunters. I'd want to team up with someone, but there doesn't seem to be anyone else on the realm doing this achievement yet...

NPCScan tracks seldom-seen rare mobs by proximity alone, making the old “/targetexact …” macros obsolete. It has the same range as those targeting macros, but you won't have to mash any buttons. Just go about your business and let _NPCScan alert you when it finds something.

I've been working on this for about a month, never camping but doing several loops a day. I've managed to find most of them easily but High Thane Jorfus and Putridus have become near impossible to find due to the Argent Tournament dailies. I've seen the Time-Lost Proto-Drake more than I've seen these two! I've also killed Gondria as well (I checked to see if any hunters were in the zone or any guild hunters that may have liked her as a pet before tapping).

It's easy to make a simple /tar macro and fly over the zones in known spawn places (wowhead was right on the money with all of them so far). One of the rares always seems to be up during a loop. I always call out when I see them in case any of my guildmates need. Even though I have TLPD I still use his special macro when I am in the zone should I see him and be able to help another alli get a cool mount! All of the mobs are easily soloable, but Tukemuth and Dirkee can give you a run for your money if you aren't at full health going into the fight.

My lvl 80 Druid was grouped up with my alt who sat in the middle of Shatt. I killed both Nuramoc and Ever-Core the Punisher (within minutes of each other) and as you know, those two mobs are in Netherstorm. The alt received credit for both of my kills.

You will receive credit while grouped for Medium Rare and Bloody Rare achievements even though you may be miles apart from each other.

But when I found Icehorn and my guildmate was in Dalaran we were grped ofc. I killed and he didnt receive it.

Well, the whole raid group thing was a long shot. I didn't think it would work. You have to take in cosideration everyone who is not in your group who kills a rare as well as the oposing faction who cannot communicate w/ you.

Some rares are easily trackable.

Putrdidus the Ancient can't be missed if he's up.

Dirkee has two areas, but w/ constant people farming for TLPD, he is easy to be missed. Also, if he's at Terrace of the Makers, you have to give him time to spawn and if you on a really fast mount, you will miss him.

Vyragosa has four patrols. More than likely killed due to TLPD farmers.

King Krush can go from Glimmering Pillar, and pat counter-clockwise near the outer path of Sholazar, and end up near Skyreach Pillar. Hard to find due to mass amounts of gatherers as well as hunters.

Aotona pats around River's Heart in that Wildgrowth Mangle area. The only spot Aotona doesn't really go is between the Oracle's daily quest area and the undead part just north east of River's Heart. Also hard to find for same reasons as Krush.

Terror Spinner has a rather large area of Zul'Drak. Pretty much the whole light blue or snow area. Might need two people on that one alone.

Griegen is in the undead area of Zul'Drak and it's a large area too. Many questers there so kinda annoying to find. 1 to 2 farmers for this guy.

Zul'drak Sentinel is easy to spot. He's in the purple area of the map of that zone. I've always found him on that road that heads south east from the main Argent quest hub. 1 farner is fine.

Syreian the Bonecarver can pat around the east area of Grizz Hillz, but not south of the river. I've always found her on that mountain side. 1 farmer is fine, 2 covers more ground.

Seething hate is any of the three busted tree caves. 1 farmer for this guy

Grocklar pats on the west end but not south of the river, and not very close to the horde/ally bases. I don't believe he goes near the troll area either. 1 or 2 farmers for this guy.

Scarlet Highlord Daion is easy. Has 3 areas that he or she can be: Scarlet Point, Scarlet area just north of Naxx, and New Hearthglen. If spawns in New Hearthglen, you probly won't find because that is a popular quest area. 1 farmer is plenty.

Crazed Indu'le Survivor is rather annoying because it goes near both western ally/horde smaller bases as well as pats around Azjol Nerub dungeon portals and near the quest area w/ the ghosts. Only need 1 farmer for him.

Tukemuth is huge and hard to miss, but you should probably have 2 on him because he pats around the greater area of Dragon Wastes. I've killed him right next to the dragon temple as well as in the open area next to the cliff near New Hearthglen.

King Ping is the island quest hub in western Fjord. He can be on either of the 2 islands. Check the shores and give him time to spawn. A lot goes on in that area. Only need 1 on him.

Vigdis the Warmaiden is eastern Fjord. She can pat in the lower area near the cliffs just outside of the Vrykul towns. She can also be on the higher plains near the packs of boars. Has a big patrol kinda so 2 would work but 1 is fine.

Perobas the Bloodthirster I've always found just north of the Taunka village, in the trees. I've not seen him anywhere else but he supposedly can pat round the snowy mountains, at their bases, but not too close to the ally/horde bases nor the Vrykul quest area. 2 would be fine for this guy just because he pats the northern area of Fjord.

Icehorn I've always found in that northeast corner of Borean in the snow, or on the south side of the main road, near the undead Taunka. He supposedly can be anywhere on the snow, but I've not seen him elsewhere and have killed him nearly 10 times w/o looking. Only 1 to look for him.

Fumblub Gearwind is hard to find just because it's a popular quest area in Borean. She flies low, but has a large patrol and is easy to lose target of her. Should only have one after her.

Old Crystalbark patrols counter clockwise around Coldarra. When he's in the southwest corner of Coldarra, he takes the upper route, around the elite, named dragonkin. Only need 1 for him. He's hard to find period because of the dungeon portals there as well as a popular quest area.

Hildana Deathstealer is in either Vrykul town in Icecrown. She's somewhat large, so easy to pick up. Has a larger patrol near Jotunheim, but not hard to find at all. Only need one on her.

High Thane Jorfus can either be in that little corner west of Icecrown Citadel, or around the Fleshwerks. I've seen him at both. Should only have one for this guy. However, due to the phasing in Icecrown, it might be difficult for a group to kill him depending on of they've done the quests or not.

Last but definetly not least, Loque'nahak. This cat is the most hunted cat for hunter pets. Known spawn areas are north sholazar near the boneyard area (w/ the birds. I forgot the name of that spot), near the gorillas in eastern area, to the west near the river near the Nesingwary camp, as well as to the south. I've only seen Loque'nahak long the borders of Sholazar, nowhere else. The only other time my mod picked him up was a tamed version of the pet.

For ALL three Sholazar rares, you will need at least 3 people checking spots and to be mobile about it. Never camp one area because there is a chance you'll miss it. I was in the wrong spot at the wrong time and missed Krush twice. On my Aotona kill and it was the first and only time that bird has been up for me, I went from the southwest area near River's Heart, to the north and a bit to the east. Someone spotted the bird and was selling the location, but I knew where it was because I didn't check there. It was at the southeast area from River's Heart. My realm, Blackwing Lair, has 3 Alliance Hunter bots, or gold farmers in that zone, so I didn't get the tag to Aotona on my kill. Luckily, I was easily able to kill the hunter and get the tag w/ ease.

The hardest rares to find are of course the Sholazar ones. You've got hunters wanting to tame them, gatherers randomly finding and killing them, as well as achievers wanting to kill them. I farmed for all 3 in a 36 hour window and was lucky to get them when I did, on both chars luckily because I was 2 boxing.

Any competent tank can solo these rares. Non tanks will have problems soloing with Putridus the Ancient, Old Crystalbark, Vigdis the War Maiden, Tukemuth, Grocklar, Zul'drak Sentinel, King Krush, and Dirkee. Those 8 are actually elites that are rare, not just pushover rares like the other 16 mobs.

I dont really think there is a connection. I thougt that too when I was farming Time-Lost Proto-Drake.
Anyway I´ve tryed it on PTR and every rare mob in Northrend has it own Spawn timer. You are just lucky to find those rare mobs like that.
I have tryed this therory. And no it didnt work.
But there is still chance that rare mobs always are up because there are like how many? 24?. And all of them has 12h spawn timer. Wich makes it easier to find because it's not like all rare mob is being killed at the same time. Waht I am trying to say that your theory isnt really true. and Idd The Sholazar ones are hard to find. So is Old crystal bark because hes in a small area and there is always ppl that lvl DK's or their alts. And that makes it easy to spott Old crystalbark. It's Easier for you to spot if you camp for 12h. I got my Vyragosa / Dirkee kills when I was farming Time lost. So if you are only farming those it will maybe be abit hard if you are just looking for them like every 5h or what ever. It's easy if u are have herb/mining and farming gold or flasks.

I hope this helped I´ve farmed rare mobs for frostbitten for like nearly 5 months and still dont have it. anyway I am farming those with a friend wich makes it easier for me . :)

Completed this today. 39 hours to find the first 22/23 mobs... 32.5 to find King Krush. King Krush spawned +24.5 hours after a server restart.

_NPCSCAN (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/npcscan.aspx) and RARE SPAWN OVERLAY (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/rare-spawn-overlay.aspx) are a must.

I did this over a 3 week period, spending 8-12 hour stretches looking for mobs. I patrolled every area to start with, and slowly reduced it as I cleared areas out. It does look like the 5 mentioned above always spawn at a server start (King Ping, Vigdis the War Maiden, Perobas the Bloodthirster, Icehorn and Griegen), and then the rest are slowly seeded into the realm. As such, I'd advise against searching on a server reset day (unless you are looking for those 5) as for the most part, the server is empty. I found Tuesdays/server restart days were my worst days, whereas on one Friday I found 7 rares in 10 hours.

I will also say that it is my opinion that spawns tend to spawn on the hour and half hours... and that spawns do not happen only every 6 hours, nor is the realm limited to 5, NOR does a rare need to be killed to spawn another. I think people who log in and check every 6 hours and find spawns are self-fulfilling the idea that the server only spawns on the 6s. My finding was that on every half hour or hour of the day a spawn could pop up provided it is within it's spawn window. I do believe that rares have a 6+ hour respawn timer so if you find a corpse, you can write it off for at least 6 hours. But ever half hour there is a chance a mob could spawn. I also believe that once a mob has been seeded into the world, it is just like any other mob and will respawn when it's respawn timer is up. That is the easiest way for programmers to deal with them rather than write code to spawn them at such and such time, and only if x mobs exist, etc.. etc...

The only mob to kill me was Dirkee... caught off guard by his fire damage and stuns :P Putridus was also a tough fight. All the rest were rather trivial.

Another good thing about NPC Scan that these handwritten macros fail to do on their own is to disregard mobs that you have already slain according to your achievement lists, so it will only alert you to mobs that you still need to complete.

You can always reset this list by clearing your cache.

Here's a strategy for anyone who tries to be kind and attempt to share the kill credit with others. I found from experience that this is far easier with guild members and/or when the party is relatively small.

Your party members should try to get there ASAP (in case anyone arrives and grief-kills her)
Warn party members before they arrive to NOT kill her on sight.
Ask everyone if she appears as red or grey. If she is red for everyone then they will all get credit. If she is grey they will not get credit.
If she is grey, instruct everyone to stay put and that you will run away until she resets. When she resets, they should immediately tag her and take her down. You should be within close enough proximity at this point to get the kill credit.

A related anecdote - I was doing quests at Jotunheim in Icecrown when NPCScan went off that Hildana Deathstealer was nearby. I already had her for achievement so I tagged her and announced in general and guild chat that she was there for others. I ended up inviting four other players to the group who were all at various stages of proximity (some questing in Icecrown, some in Dalaran, some at the Argent Tournament). I did not perform step #2, so one of the players who showed up immediately proceeded to kill her before everyone arrived. As a result, not everyone got the kill credit. Furthermore, even some of the players who were next to her already did not get the kill credit either, including the one who took her down (which is a bit of justice I suppose, but still unfair to everyone else). So, just a word of warning that this does work better with people you know and in smaller groups.

Interestingly enough, Putridus the Ancient was announced in general chat at the same time the group was on their way over. It was around 11:40 server time (EST) on Argent Dawn which is restart +33:40 hours. I don't know if this is common, but I got the impression it was more than a simple coincidence.

I just finished this achievement and I'm very glad to have done so - it was beginning to consume me

My advice if you want to get going on it is to get up early(ish), around 07:00 or 08:00 realm time, at least for the lower-level zones. Because most of us are level 80 and sit in Dalaran unless we're in an instance, finding 12-15 of them isn't so hard. It's only the busier areas that become problematic really, i.e. Sholazar Basin, Icecrown, Storm Peaks (particularly Vyragosa, though she can relatively easily be found if you're prepared to get up during the graveyard shift, like 06:00 realm time).

I found this out accidentally and got quite a lot of them by getting up early for a week or so. I hope that helps, good luck!

Finally completed as a holy/disc priest with mediocre pvp gear. I found camping one spot in Sholazar was the best strategy for that particular area because of all the traffic (the most difficult zone to find any of the rares in, bar none) . Of all of them, for my particular class Dirkee was the toughest to take down but the others (including Putridus) were very easy. All soloed, and I recommend getting npcscan if you don't have it, I just left my volume cranked, parked in one spot and went afk to do other things waiting on spawns when I really didnt feel like circling. I also really recommend logging out at a spawn point so when you come back online you waste less time (logged in to a few npcscan alerts that way too :)

This achievement took quite a while for me. I just flew around searching for rares and sometimes found one or two. The hardest for me was those on Borean Tundra, the two in storm peaks and Loque'nahak. Good luck grinding your achieve. Try to prio the hardest ;)

Just started this one after having finished up Medium Rare for TBC so am wondering if anyone could give a respawn timer for them?

Are they on a 4 hour, 6 hour, 12 hour, 24 hour or even 48 or 72 hour spawn timer?

As a dedicated rare spawn farmer, I managed to kill most rares within a few days. Loque'nahak, aotona, vyragosa and dirkee were still left. About a week later. I was VERY lucky and managed to kill Loque'nahak and vyragosa withing 40 mins of eachother while doing dailies. Then, things started to become hopeless, untill a month later (hadn't been very active) I killed dirkee. And now, I'm camping for another few weeks for vyragosa. I have seen her corpse a few times, can't recall what time that was, but I guess I shouldn't complain seeing the amount of luck I've had.

It took a fairly long time to do this for me. The best bit of advice I can offer is jif you see a dead body return 12 hours later. That's how I got Vryagosa after I killed the TIme-Loss Proto Drake and that's how I got my last target the Tuskar dude in Dragonblight. Also, I think I got some of the Bloody Rare ones that way too. Its a pain in the ass (At least for me; I am on a very heavily populated server) but its very doable. Just don't set out thinking you can get it all done in a day.

The only issue I forsee with Vyragosa is the stupidly long patrol paths.

And as sad to say as it is, have killed the entire set of spirit beasts about twice - with only one Gondria going to a hunter.

I tagged him and had him all DoTted up when one of the aboms in the area pulled me into a group of undead mobs. I kept hitting Putridus, but the mobs killed me. By the time I got back a DK had finished my job for me.

I'm so ready to be done with this achievement!

A tip for if you're using NPC_Scan and NPC_Scan Overlay: If you're minimized it and come within range of a rare it will only alert you once you maximize the game again, and log that position as the place where you found it. So if you are going to minimize I suggest to go into window mode and instead just swap windows...

Just finished the achievement, the last one was Aotona. Camped him for three days now, first around 43/54, no joy. 42/69, no joy.
Finally started camping him at 57/65, yesterday like 6 hours, today ~ 5 hours, spawned pretty much right beneath me.

Someone, either here or at the Aotona page, mentioned him spawning at this location around ~11-12am. Spawned at 12.50am for me. Might just be a huge coincidence but glad I got lucky. ^^

So much love for NPCScan. ^^ Makes camping rare mobs much more comfortable, still thinking back in horror at the time I camped the TLPD for weeks, hammering a target macro every couple seconds......

So I finally achieved Frostbitten about 5 minutes ago.
The last mob I needed was King Krush. He took me over a month of solid camping to find. He repeatedly spawned when I was online but I kept missing him as he spawned at the other points.

Today he finally spawned @ The Glimmering Pillar at 15:00 just as I was logging out. God am I glad this is done.

Tips:
-Early morning rare hunting is awesome. Seriously. If you can manage to log on for 30 mins each morning at 06:00 you will find at LEAST 3 rares. I've completed about 75% of the achievement on a second character while waiting for King Krush by patrolling while eating breakfast.
-NPC_scan, NPC_scan overlay and SilverDragon are invaluable if you are hunting rare spawns. If NPC_scan has a mob cached and you happen to spot the mob again, SD will likely pick it up if your mouse goes over it.
-RESEARCH! If you are after a particular rare, find out when it last spawned. Then go do a bit of research on WoWhead for respawn times. This will save you countless meaningless hours camping when you could be doing something else.

PS. This WILL take you a long, long time, unless you are extremely lucky. Be patient. You probably wont finish it in one week.

Apparenty the Frostbitten system is quite generous as it turned out today on Putrudus the Ancient. I tagged him first , i waited for my group mate to come from the other side , another mage out of my group came and start killing him while it was (grey) for him. In the end me as tagger , my friend that was out of range and this guy that killed it tagged ( grey ) to him , we all go the achiemevent. Thats a good thing and its the way it should be. It is enough hard that there are realms on which at 5 in the morning there are 49+ people in icecrown, Storm peaks and Sholozar.

Starting to do this with another guildie and have read where a lot of people are just patrolling zones. I went to each rares page and pinned a point on a Northern map in all the key areas. I then copied it over to paint and drew lines to each point that should take you close enough to each that would allow NPC_scan to go off if one is there when you pass by. Hopefully the map is useful to anyone that does patrols of the entire continent, and hopefully it nets you some kills.

I'm still working on this achievement, but finished Bloody Rare today. What has been a great help so far is using NPC Scan and the MoveAnything addon. I opened up my battlemap (the small version of the zone map that you can keep on your screen), used MoveAnything to make it a little bigger, and placed it on one side of my screen. That way I could check where all the paths were without having to constantly open my large map!

my best advice for this is to:

get NPCscan, NPCscan overlay, and do this in the morning (maybe on a weekend morning, it's Saturday morning for me).

It is 11:49 EST (8:49AM PST) and I am wrapping up my outland hunting for the day. Up untill just now, I've gotten 4 consecutive kills

Make sure to go slow if you have 280/310! It takes a sec for enemies to spawn. don't just fly through, stop every few seconds (make sure you can see other enemies behind and in front of you).

Completed this achievement today 9/11/11 after about 6 days of farming (2-3day weekends). First day I decided to do this I found one rare (Please see individual mobs for details), 2nd day 5 rares, third day all but 3- Loque'nahak, Tukemuth, and Vyragosa. The following weekend I was able to kill Loque the first day, Tukemuth the second and Vyragosa the third with almost an entire days worth of camping on each. These three were by far the most challenging for me to locate, and seemed to be on a much longer timer then the others.

My method was to pretty much spend the entire day flying from one NPC_Scan overlay path to another then repeat, eliminating paths as I found the rares.

If you kill something using only a pyrium shield spike you will get credit for the kill, receive rep (if any) and be able to loot the corpse. I just finished off Frostbitten by killing Vyragosa while alt tabbed and writing emails. She pathed into me and died to the spike.

Aforementioned earlier by a previous poster you can use a batch file to automate the deletion process of the creaturecache.wdb for _NPCscan. To do this takes a little PC savy.

To start open Notepad and click File then Save As
In the File name box type: wow.bat
and select your desktop for location to save the file, and click Save
Once this is done copy and paste the following lines into notepad then click Save

REM The next line deletes the creature cache

While only needing Aotona for the achievement I was flying through Sholazar and spotted a hunter camping it. I thought great another person i can group with. Finally about 2 hours later it spawns. I get group summoned and watch as they tame it. Sadly, no credit for the acievement. It must be killed to get credit. on a side note I had already killed 16 rares in NR and got a guild hunter to tame 2 others. All that work flying around and I don't get the only one I've needed for about 2 weeks. Guess I'll go camp TLPD till tomorrow. Oh, wait Vyragosa got killed today too. Maybe someday I'll finish this one. Time to go find Vorakem Doomspeaker (only one I need for Bloody Rare).

This is a time consuming achievement to say the least.
280%~310% mount speed is good here, Along with a low population server.
Only two rares per region of northrend can be up at once, So, Icehorn, Fumblub Gearwind, and Old crystalbark cannot be up at once. Only Icehorn, Fumblub gearwind, Or Icehorn, Old crystalbark etc.
I suggest NPCscan + Npcscan overlay. Incredible addon.

Well I thought I'd just give some feedback on my experience on getting this achievement.

The key thing to remember when searching for Northrend rares is to limit your time looking for rares at peak times; Northrend is now just a levelling zone and people race through it quickly to move on to the Cataclysm zones (and soon Pandarian zones also) so peak levelling times aka Friday nights and Saturdays and Sundays will give you a lower chance to find the rare your looking for.

Below I've listed some specific issues regarding each rare annoying with a scale of difficulty on getting: -

(1) = hardest --------------->>> (5) easiest

Borean Tundra
Icehorn: - His spawn is in a starting zone and on a highly travelled route to Dragonsblight by levellers. (3)
Fumblub Gearwind: - Around a starting zone questing hub and can be tricky to get. (3)
Old Crystalbark: - Around a lowly used starting zone questing hub and can be tricky although easy to camp; avoid the elite dragons flying about! (4)

Howling Fjord
Vigdis the War Maiden: - In a starting zone & on a farming route for cobalt ore that people still farm. (2)
King Ping: - In a starting zone & around the The Kalu'ak questing hub which people still use to get the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole (3)
Perobas the Bloodthirster: - In a starting zone & on a farming route for cobalt ore that people still farm. (2)

Sholazar Basin
Loque'nahak: - An absolute pain this one, in Sholazar which is heavily quested & farmed for Saronite Ore & Titanium Ore and this rare is also farmed by hunters so they can tame as a pet; it also has 5 spawn points along with being around the Frenzyheart Tribe quest hub. (1)
King Krush: - Again a pain and for all the same reasons as stated above - only 3 spawn points. (2)
Aotona: - Again a pain and for all the same reasons as stated above - 6 spawn points and the spawns are around The Oracles & Frenzyheart Tribe which people still do the dailies for. (1)

Dragonblight
Crazed Indu'le Survivor: - Fairly easy to get this one with no major problems (4)
Tukemuth: - Easiest of them all - seems to have a very low spawn timer and I've killed him plenty of times while looking for other rares. (5)
Scarlet Highlord Daion: - Spawns in 3 different areas, for me this was a hard one to find as people camp the areas to farm Frostweave Cloth (2)

Storm peaks
Vyragosa: - Hardest part of this one as it has the same flight path as Time-Lost Proto-Drake who drops Reins of the Time-Lost Proto-Drake. Special note here is that Vyragosa flys high and wont land, you will have to dps her down with ranged attacks; any attempt to kite her so she lands will reset her so be warned! Iv'e killed her and seen her dead 2 times by the valley past Bor's Breath so I feel confident to suggest that she spawns at the waterfall and flys north (1)
Dirkee: - Because of the above comments this NPC is still quite hard to get as it's generally killed by people camping Vyragosa or the Time-Lost Proto-Drake. (2)

Grizzly Hills
Syreian the Bonecarver: - Easy enough to get this one - no major issues. (5)
Seething Hate: - Spawns points are near the Flight Path to an Alliance and Horde and a starting quest hub for the area so can be hard to find. (3)
Grocklar: - Spawns points are near the Flight Path to an Alliance and Horde and a starting quest hub for the area so can be hard to find. (3)

Zul'drak
Terror Spinner: - This zone isn't heavily quested any-more; especially around these spawn points (5)
Zul'Drak Sentinel: - Slightly harder to find as he spawns in areas under flightpaths and around the Argent Stand (3)
Griegen: - Spawns around an early quest hub and under flight path routes (4)

Icecrown
Putridus the Ancient: - Icecrown is a fairly empty zone other that in the starting area so all 3 are easy enough to find. (3)
Hildana Deathstealer: - As above. (4)
High Thane Jorfus: - As above. (4)

For those starting to hate TLPD campers because you want Vyragosa, try turning it around. If the camper's the same faction as you, tell them you're working on Frostbitten and ask if they're willing to tell you if Vyragosa spawns. As a long-time TLPD camper I have had no problem doing this for people, and essentially acted as their pet camper for hours on end. Holding Vyra for the couple of minutes it takes someone to fly over (or indeed, simply summoning them over now that we've guild perks) really does not cramp the TLPD spawn timer by all that much, and helping someone else out helps with the monotony of the camp and the let down when Vyra decides to show.

This achievement, along with bloody rare are both simple to complete these days. As said before, the use of NPC scan / overlay is imperrative but there is no need to camp etc. Most of the places are deserted these days, just do a loop round all the spawn points once a day, preferably later at night, midnight or later worked for me, you should have the job done in less than 2 weeks (give or take an awkward mob or 2!)

People have got to stop posting useless information that extends the page.

The respawn timers are about 24 hours, basically 1 day. So if you don't see any of the NPCs, just save yourself time and wait the next day.

I'm currently hunting for this achievement on my paladin.

It just occurred to me that in the area of prospective spawns of the rares, at least in Borean Tundra and Sholazar Basin and also in Storm Peaks , there's quite often Arctic Clouds approximately where the actual spawn could be expected.

I wonder whether the spawns of the rares are somehow related to the despawn/harvesting of those clouds (by using the Zapthrottle Mote Extractor), or whether those two occurrences are completely unrelated in terms of game design.

If you're trying for Northern Exposure / Frostbitten I suggest trying Stocking Up at the same time, because killing Northrend rares gives a guaranteed Abandoned Adventurer's Satchel, which give 20 Frostweave Cloth. :)

I consider, that Blizz should change conditions of obtaining this achievement. It is quite uncomfortable for hunters to kill some creatures, like Loque’nahak or Terror Spinner. It is hard to be a hunter and get these very hunter’s achievement. If you wanna have a pet, you should tame it. If you wanna have achievement you must find it again and kill it. But that will be really good to inform other hunter, who has not this pet.

Why it does not count if I tame the beast? I think it should be something like "Kill or tame all of the extremely rare and hard to find Northrend creatures listed below". Perhaps, it will be good if other classes get this achievement, when they are in a group with hunter, who tame it.

ok so i am a bit late on the wow craze but yes i am a wowhead and am hooked on the achievements, i am working on the frostbitten and dang it all the npcscan does indeed show the rares pathways it travels but to have them ping is another story. the pathis there and i will travel it day in day out but not a pingone and no they are not cached. so anywayi have 5 need a lot more once i figure the screenshot out i am going to post some the achievement but until then i am going hunting. lol.

As of completion of scheduled maintenance on Halloween 2012, it appears this and Bloody Rare have gone account wide. This was not announced, but rather somewhat sneaked into the game. As of right now, none of my progress is showing on either achievement and I was 3 away on both. I am not submitting a ticket until I log into all toons and see if it updates. I'll post another comment to let anyone know who's wondering as I am. Cheers.

Do you know if the rares in all of Northrend is connected? So if you kill a rare in Borean Tundra, a new rare will spawn somewhere else?

Will a rare despawn after a period of time, if the rare is not tamed/killed, or is this just a myth based phasing?

Is there any limit of rares that can be up on any given continent, or in any given zone? Or could there be rares all over, on a low populated server?

I'm very sorry about the wait time on this for you, we are very busy at the moment but we are working hard on this to get it back to normal.

I'll answer your questions in turn for you:

The rares are not connected like this, killing one rare does not affect another one spawning.

A rare does not have a despawn timer, it will just stay there until it is killed or tamed.

There is no limit to the amount of rares that can be active at the same time.

I'm not sure if this CRZ related, but trying to get these while I was doing the Children's week quests is frustrating to say the least. I'm taking the flightpaths (being the lazy person Iam) and NPC scan goes off. I target the mob so I know where exactly it's located. Upon arrival, I mount up and fly back to the location only to find no traces of the rare.

I find this very frustrating, considering I still have quite a few rares left to kill.

I myself use the rare spawn/boss scanner, Silver Dragon. I find it works really well and is custemizable. As of 10, June 2013, its covers every rare and boss spawn in game from vanilla to MoP 5.3 rares and open raid boss's like oon, sha, gallon and nalak!

I've gone and made a ~~mess~~ collection of TomTom waypoints, which guide you to the rare spawn areas. Sadly some of them spawn like all over the place, so sometimes you need to look around the coords, especially if they are marked as 'waypoint'. When the rare has multiple locations with pretty narrow spawn areas, i have marked them as 'spawn'.

Use the addon Paste to add all waypoints in one copy and paste to your WOW-client. (Since the client alone is limited to 255 characters per paste.)

This script (which you can run via the Paste -addon) detects all the remaining champs and adds the waypoints to your TomTom . I Hope it helps you guys out. This way only the required waypoints are there. Keep in mind most of these mobs pat around multiple areas.

You know there has got to be an easier way to find these other than trying to on CRZ infested servers with thousands of players Horde & Alliance scouring Northrend, whether they are leveling up or are max level. It was tough enough when my server was alone during Wrath of the Lich King days, but now with these ridiculous spawn rates, it is next to impossible today.

Makes me think I should have boosted my 90 on a non-CRZ realm.

Fixed, I hope, version of ApathiaLol's script below. Couldn't add it as a reply due to comment length limits. Props to them, not trying to steal their thunder or anything.

As mentioned in comments GH was missing from the replace, both ZG and ZD were used for Zul'Drak, some lines were missing "s, and *I think* the Zul'drak Sentinal and Terror Spinner lines were too long thus causing your character to /say some of it. Anyway it processes correctly for me at least, now let's hope it helps with the hunt.

Hunters: rejoice! At the moment, taming a pet counts toward your achievement progress. So no more will you need to kill any of the rare beasts if you prefer the idea of taming them.

That doesn't stop others from needing to kill them, of course, but it does offer hunters a little bit of relief. At least the Beast Masters.

The Rare Love AddOn over at Curse and WoW Interface does this for you.

In fact, it combines these and a whole lot more. All in one convenient macro.

Most importantly, it runs lean and clean. Little cpu/fps impact and a tiny memory footprint.

To Confirm , On 7-31-17 I had Found Loque'nahak and did Did not want to Kill him. So I waited and waited for a 1/2 hour but No Hunters would show up to tame him. I didn't want him to De-Spawn so I tamed him for a Second time and I got credit for the Frostbitten Achievement too.

Today I've found out that, not only taming this or any of the beasts required for the Frostbitten achievement counts towards it, but it also counts for the whole party.

I found this out while I was helping my hunter friend tame Loque'Nahak. After she was done taming it, the achievement progress window popped for me as if I had killed Loque'Nahak. Which means there is no reason at all to actually kill any of these gorgeous beasts if a hunter is currently seeking to tame them - you can just invite the hunter so that they can tame the beast and both of you get credit for it.Or, if you have a hunter alt, you might as well tame them instead of killing them, as the achievement progress is account wide.

My last creature to hunt down for this achievement was Vyragosa. I was hovering in Bor's Breath, around the place where frozen river turns south, ~36.66, 40y+ above ground, near the ledge with two NPCs high above the rest (Argent Dawn RP server, if it means anything). After few days of waiting for her I was so excited that I've finally managed to get this dragon in my sight (and ears; thank you, NPCScan) that I've forgot I was in the air and casted an attack spell. Of course, I've plummeted to my death, but I've DID manage to get the achievement before hitting the ground.

However, I'm not sure if I'm going to wait even more for Time-Lost Proto-Drake... I have better things to do, like taking care of several thousands of pirates in Tanaris for Insane in the Membrane. :P

Generally, it was a fun achievement to get (music, views, nostalgia), I think that the most problematic NPCs are the ones with wider patrol routes and not that much stationary. For example, there is not much of an issue with finding King Ping or Old Crystalbark (if they're alive, of course) or even Vyragosa mentioned above, as you basically must just patiently wait in a spot, but creatures like Loque'nahak who needs you to fly over a whole zone or Fumblub Gearwind who flies over a rather wide patch of ground, on different altitudes, and even NPCScan has problems with detecting him, or Grocklar that has several patrol routes and everywhere are these trees that cause you to hit them all the time (but I love Grizzly Hills and the music there, so I didn't care that much)... they can really nom on your time.

As of 9/09/19 Hunter no longer get credit for this if you tame the pets instead of killing them. Not sure if they meant to allow hunters to get credit when taming or not, but have been talking with GMs about this issue and they state we now have to kill them.. ugh

Finished this today with King Krush--all three rares in Sholazar were the last ones I needed, probably due to lots of hunters waiting to tame still. I used SilverDragon, NPCScan, and macros to target any zone rares that I spammed as I flew around/between spawn areas. Definitely hit the areas around the spawn points and use a targeting macro, which can grab the mobs before you see them. Have your settings on for flightpaths, just in case (I got Tukemuth this way), too. Putridus is HUGE, but my NPCScan only picked him up when I flew down into Icecrown and near his path while spamming my targeting macro; it picked him up from VERY far away, but not up in Dalaran like some people have mentioned.

The addition of Chromie Time levelling makes this and Frostbitten far easier. Take any character into Northrend Chromie Time levelling and look for yourself. Took me <5hrs for each achievement if you add up all the flying around.

It's really not that hard. Vyragosa is tricky, check out wowhead's time lost proto drake guide.

For everything else, create an allied race on a dead RP server and level to 30 for your flying mount. You can fly around and get everything in RP server shard chromie time, no problem. Save Tukemuth or another very easy target for last, and do that on your main (if you care about such things).

doing it in the morning on low pop server or at night or early morning is basically a free achievement. I used some help from a friend who had alt on weird servers - however - deadservers don't work as zones without people in reset, and timers of rares start with zoning in which means it might be even harder - zones that existed for some hours are the best way to go - download addon NPCtime to ensure you are in a zone that has been up for some time - do it at night or in the morning and you will get most in one go

This is substantially easier with a warmode on chromie time character on a dead RP server or servers. I think you can also do them with trial characters too, especially now that achievements are all account wide with TWW (I think this one was beforehand anyway)
