I found the instructions for this could have been a bit clearer:

After "Add 5 fuel to the forge" and "Open a vent", you get to the "Hold the heat steady" stage.

There is a bar above the forge that shows you the current heat level: black on the left = too cold, blue in the centre = just right, black on the right = too hot.
The aim is to keep the heat in the blue zone by adding fuel or opening one or two vents when the heat surges up. When the heat starts to get steady, an additional percentage counter appears on the screen that will go up as long as the heat is in the blue zone until it reaches 100%.

~~Note that the heat bar is anchored just above the forge, so depending on your viewing angle, you may not be able to see it, which would make the quest basically impossible to complete!~~ (This seems to have changed since Beta)

To complete this quest you need to assist Forgelite Sophone in crafting a piece of armor.
First, speak with Sika and add fuel to the forge five times (a place where you dropped the crate during the previous quest onto)
After that just open either right of left Anima Forge Vent and keep throwing fuel to the forge. Make sure the heat mark kept within the blue section.
Finally, interact to the armor piece when its on the anvil and stand still while the castbar is being in progress

Ok easy guide.

Throw 3 "fuel"
Open vent
Repeat.

You should keep heat between medium and high no problem.

If the meter doesn't move abandon quest and take again.

It seems currently any nameplate addon will mess up this indicator bar. So if you can only see one color, try to disable all addons.

I present The Aspirant's Crucible part of The Path to Ascension Storyline Quest Chain in Bastion

Quest Name:	Start and description
1. The Aspirant's Crucible	Ride Theonara 48 74.1
2. A Life of Service	Press on The Eternal Flame 57 81.3 then kill 3 waves of mobs. To call new wave use The Eternal Flame.
3. A Forge Gone Cold	Speak to Sika 52.7 82.6
4. The Cycle of Anima: Etherwyrms	Collect 25 Glowing Viscera dropping from Languishing Etherwyrm or Starved Etherwyrm. This quest can be done in same time with The Cycle of Anima: Flower Power and The Cycle of Anima: Drought Conditions.
5. The Cycle of Anima: Flower Power	collect 6 The Cycle of Anima: Flower Power from big flowers from ground.
6. The Cycle of Anima: Drought Conditions	Activate and defend Anima Extractor 55 79.5. after you will kill Ravenous Etherwyrm pick up Condensed Anima Mote is on mid in Anima Extractor.
7. Light the Forge, Forgelite	Just follow NPC but don't forget to pick up Raw Materials and drop in to Basin. Then clean 2 Anima Forge Vent then Tidy up 5 elements inside forge
8. The Work of One's Hands	Speak to Sika next to forge then use 5 raw material then open a vent. Now the hardest think xD you need to keep the heat ( i throw 10 raw materials and when Sika call that is to hot i use only 1 vent then i throw more raw material and that work xD ). At the end you need to help pressing on Armor.
9. The True Crucible Awaits	Speak with Kleia 51.8 81
10. Assessing Your Stamina	You need to Sparring with Aspirant 8 times just speak with them and they will attack you. You can do this quest together with Assessing Your Strength
11. Assessing Your Strength	You need to Defeat the 3 Praetorian Sparring Assistants: Archilon 50.6 81.7, Straticus 50.2 80.6, Epilon 50.4 79.3.
12. Assessing Your Spirit	You will challange Athanos you will lose but that normal xD.
13. The Chamber of First Reflection	Speak with Kleia She is inside chamber 57.2 86.6.
14. The First Cleansing	Pick up 3 item from left chamber ( one of them is to take bathe in pool use extra skill to activate ) then back to Kleia speak with Her and go to right chamber to activate 3 Soul Mirror one by one and every activation you will need to kill mobs. after finish with last mirror move out from chamber to speak with Kleia.
15. The Archon's Answer	Speak with Kalisthene 53.5 87.2
16. All An Aspirant Can Do	Go to Kleia She is behind bridge 48.3 72.9.

If you don't see the blue bar and only see a red bar, abandon the quest and pick it up again.

Currently unable to complete this quest due to the "no blue bar" bug.

I have disabled all add-ons, and abandoned and retaken the quest upwards of 20 times on three different computers, two with fresh WoW installs, and I still only see the brown/red bar. The blue bar shows up for a moment, or if I move away from the forge towards the door, but there is currently no way for me to complete this quest and progress with the story,

It can get crowded in the room, so just know you must add "fuel" to the forge when the bar goes too far to the left, and clear the vents if the bar goes too far to the right. The fuel is located to the left of the forge opening. Even though the fuel was sparkling,I could not see the fuel pile because people were standing on it. You will get a hand icon if you move your cursor to the left and you can then pick up the fuel.

More RNG (you know you can't get enough). So once you get this going, it's all RNG as to whether the forge gets too hot (need to open vents) or too cold (need to add fuel).

The only time the percentage increases is when the bar is flashing blue, if it's too cold or too hot the percentage doesn't increase. So keep it as on blue as you can, but you're limited due to the RNG. One time I had it get hot 3 times, so all that time (until you get it down to flashing again) the percentage doesn't increase. So it took quite awhile to finish..

I found this quest be a bit broken. After the creepy mutant owl-thing instructs you to throw in some fuel, and open a vent the rest would seem to be intuitive, however it continues to rant about "the forge is cold" and you see a debuff to refeclt this - regardless of where the indicator is on the slider. I kept the damned thing in the right zone for ages but still got this incessant whining and debuff. I cranked up to max, and somehow, despire the dangerous heat levels it mist be at, I again got the debuff. In the end I just ignored it, let the slider drop to empty and threw in more fuel. This apparently completed the quest. Great design Bliz ==

if the bar turns completely red drop the quest and start over.

The object is to keep the gauge in the center of the blue bar

I don't know if it was just me, but I think this quest was changed. The "events" that made the bar go higher and lower didn't happen, so it was very easy to just keep the bar in the center as the quest completed. It might have been random, or maybe they realized how annoying the quest was and nerfed it?

Ha, at the start of the armor-holding part (the last step), Forgelite Sophone will say:

Come, I have need of your hands.
Hold the armor steady, now.
This is the most delicate part of the process. Precision is key.

So I jumped in the middle of the "cast".
...to which Forgelite Sophone said:

I cannot work like this.

That just made me laugh.
I imagined some super famous musician being told they will have to "endure" not having the comforts of everything that they listed on their rider, and the musician yelling

WHAT? I cannot work like this.

...and storming off.

Amusingly, you can still use Darkmoon Whistle while you're holding the armor for her --
she will be startled, but she will continue without issue.
