I ended up doing this quest 4 times for it to work on live. What I believe made it work was walking up to the questgiver while Piston had the pod, instead of flying back. Each time I flew back, the quest never completed, but running back to the questgiver did the trick.

The guy you're looking for, Rust-Eye the Clever is in the far southeast corner of Mechagon on the little outcrop of land at 87, 74.

If the quest won't complete for you when returning with the pod, stand next to the quest giver and re-log. It will complete instantly.

I had one issue doing this Quest the trog was really hard to kill I was on a Demon Hunter with najitar 385 mostly gear I had to pop both of my defensives and Metamorphoses then stun but I was finally able to kill the bastard

This guy is stupidly hard to kill in sub 400 gear. If you sped to 120 on an alliance character because you did all your faction work on a horde character, bring a friend to kill this guy. He pretty much 2-shots my shadowpriest in ilevel 324 gear. Also, that gnome friend who joins you? useless. neither dpses nor takes aggro. just there cosmetically.

This quest is just a mess.

Basically you have to go to Bondo's Yard and with absolutely no other indication this Piston guy will join you on a crawler.

Then you go fight the npc Rust-Eye the Clever with no help from Piston. He will pick up the pod though after you kill the npc.

Then you go back to Waren Gearhart in Rustbolt and Piston should deliver the pod.

Quick update:

Tried reloading/logging - nothing. Flew out of Rustbolt and back in and voila! Done deal!

I got as far as beating Rust-Eye and couldn't get the helper gnome to pick up the pod. I cleared all the trash around Rust Eye in case there was something blocking but still just stood there looking at me funny. After the third time killing Rust Eye I submitted a ticket. Blizzard's response was basically "hate it for you but we're busy right now".

So, as a Horde main this expansion, my options for unlocking mechagnomes are to gear my alliance alt to 385 or higher just to be able to survive this mob, or to wait until Shadowlands. You couldn't have the spider tank helper hold aggro, Blizz? Or maybe not give the trogg an ability that can one-shot a fresh 120? Seems unnecessarily harsh.

What a lot of people seem to be missing on why this quest won't complete is this: If you fly back, Piston will not keep up. He might make it back eventually, or he might despawn (with the issues in the pre-patch launch, this is happening a lot).

1. If you fly back, wait about a minute or two for Piston to catch up as he can't keep up with flight speed while on the ground.

2. If you log out and back in when you get back, sometimes it will respawn Piston next to you and the quest will complete, but not always.

3. If Piston never shows up, abandon the quest and do it again. Walk or slow fly back, keeping him within viewing distance, and he should follow correctly.

To get to Rust-Eye the Clever, go down to the shore from Rustbolt, near the flight master. Build the armory next to it, then take a jet pack that lasts for 20 minutes to the island. Rust-Eye was easy to solo as a level 56 alliance noob rogue.

Stupid quest.

This is considered three-expansions old now, so it's not like anyone is in the area to help. I'm a level 58 priest and went shadow and gave it absolutely everything I had to kill this guy after a few failed attempts. Fear when possible. Bubble at every opportunity. Have a health pot on hand. Use everything you absolutely have to kite and keep him away from you. In my case it was a lot of Psychic Screaming and Silencing.

Defeat the scavenging troggs and retrieve Mekkatorque's Escape Pod.

Description

One of our defenders saw the troggs take out the homing copter carrying Mekkatorque's pod. Since we started bringing goods in from Tiragarde, they have been a real thorn in our side. Piston, a very promising young inventor, has a vehicle able to handle this task. Meet his crew down in Bondo's yard. Please hurry and retrieve the pod! I am not sure what will happen to Gelbin, if they break it open. Ahem, we would not be upset if you did a little beach clean-up while you were there...
