The previous quest taught you how to collect wood and cook raw meat. So collect 1 wood, and 1-2 meat. Cook it, eat the meat from your inventory before you starve and collect 2 more meat, and that should be plenty to survive the night if you just wait and eat food when the bar drops to about half.

This is easy to mess up...at least in the beta. If there are too many people in the area you may have to ride further out to find your wood and meat. If you do, you can also eat mountain berries for a few extra seconds on the timer. They are typically near trees or the rocks. Be sure not to click on the meat in your bag, but on the fire itself. Clicking on the meat will make you consume it raw.

Eating a Hearty Steak will give you 50% of your hunger bar. You only need 3 to be able to survive the night.

At level 103 two Champion questlines are available:

1. Recruiting Rexxar, Survival Skills & Survive the Night, which give Champion: Rexxar that grants the Champion follower Rexxar.

2. Calling Hilaire Home and Bite of the Beast, which gives Champion: Beastmaster Hilaire that grants the Champion follower Beastmaster Hilaire.

To unlock these, you'll first need to complete a seemingly unrelated short quest chain in Val'sharah, offered by Emmarel Shadewarden at Trueshot Lodge at 41.7 59.99 who gives you the breadcrumb: Lending a Hand. Turn this in to Hudson Crawford and do Rising Troubles and Assassin Entrapment. At this point, Snowfeather should appear beside Hudson Crawford and offer you Urgent Summons.

Note that Snowfeather didn't appear for me until I'd obtained all three artefact weapons.

Rexxar is in Highmountain at Cliff's Edge, which is 200 yards NW of The Witchwood flight point at 36.73 35.39. For those without coordinates, that's on the first E of Edge on the map. Hints: You only need one piece of wood per quest to light the fire, berries aren't necessary, you only need three pieces of cooked meat to survive "overnight", but I collected another one just in case.

Beastmaster Hilaire is Stormheim, just North of Weeping Bluffs, about 300 yards North of the nearest flight path at Skyfire Triage Camp. Hint: Deliver Zoarg's Head to Archmage Landon, as Beastmaster Hilaire really doesn't want it!

This thing is totally bugged for my Hunter. The preceding quest worked fine but now I can't see any trees at all, I don't have any wood and can't get any. I've re-logged, abandoned and re-taken the quest, logged out overnight, turned off my addons, nothing seems to make it work and I've no idea what to do.

The mechanics are exactly like the preceeding quest. Get wood from a greyish tree. 1 tree should do. Kill 2 pigs quickly. clicking on them with mouse to begin combat doesn't work, use tab and action key menu. run back to Rexxar's firepit. click on the pit, a fire starts with 1 wood. click the fire and a steak cooks and you eat it. cook a 2nd steak & eat it. quest is now pretty much over. You can scout out the greyish trees that can be cut for firewood before taking this quest so you can run straight for them. No problems finding pigs to kill. If others are doing the quest at the same time, it may be difficult finding wood. So scout out where all the greyish trees are ahead of taking the quest.

This took me several tries before I realized that when you cook the meat it goes into your inventory and you have to eat it out of your inventory. To me it appeared as if the meat was cooking when I clicked on the fire and that I was eating it at the same time. So after dying many times I finally realized that you gather it, cook it, go to your inventory and eat it. Seems simple enough but the quest was unclear and most of the comments on WOWhead just say "eat it" which was also unclear. Hopefully this helps someone else out!

I had a very long run in and dying on the way s I did not start from100 in Highmountain - As level 106 I still have not started Highmountain but a quick jump from trueshot Lodge down on the path below at Sylvan Falls ( Remember your Goblin Glider or Kit ) then I could run all the way up there taking fligth masters I passed on the way including the fligtmaster near his camp.

It took a jump out of high clifss or maybe two but I got there.

Finding the woods as mentioned in other comments is not easy when other players here - Still had not completed it whn typing this

While many of the other comments were very useful, I initially missed a few key items concerning the quest mechanics.

You are to survive for a time by killing pigs, looting meat, cooking and then eating the cooked meat in order to refill the red "health" meter that is ticking down when the quest is started. The fire in the pit near the starting point is lit by having wood from one of the gray trees in inventory and clicking on the pit. Clicking on the fire with a raw pig meat in inventory will change it to cooked meat, and clicking on the cooked meat in inventory will "eat" it and refill the red health meter. The central idea is to use cooked pig meat as many times as necessary to keep the red meter from emptying totally before the overall quest timer completes.

The best strategy I found was to first collect wood from a tree and kill and loot a single pig, then return to light the fire and cook and eat the one meat to refill the red meter. This will give time to find and kill another pig and return to the fire to cook and eat this meat, again refilling the meter. Repeat the kill/cook/eat sequence as often as necessary to prevent the red meter from running out before the quest completes. Completion for me took three cycles. Very easy when the quest mechanics are understood. Very frustrating when they are not.

Important note:

As others have pointed out, you need to collect one wood and 3 pigs worth of meat.
You have to cook the meat and eat the meat.

What's not readily apprent, is that 'clicking' on the meat in your bags doesn't cook it. It makes you eat the raw meat, even if you're standing beside the fire. it seems like you're cooking it but you're not.

You have to get he wood. Kill one or two pigs and return to Rexar. use the fire pit to make the fire.

THEN CLICK ON THE FIRE TO COOK THE MEAT

This puts a cooked meat in your bag. You eat THAT meat. Then click the FIRE again to cook another piece. Eat it, etc.

I must have killed 30 pigs and failed the quest 10 times, thinking my quest was bugged, when I wasn't actually cooking the meat I thought I was.

As indicated the mechanics of this quest and what you actually have to do, are not clear at all.

I hate this quest! Turning up the lighting quality at least makes it so you can see the trees (totally invisible on lower settings) but still they really need to take the timer off of this quest. Are you listening, Blizz?

ok, i'm an idiot. I collected the wood and meat, cooked it, then accepted the quest to Survive the Night. Seemed logical at the time. Turns out that you need to collect the wood, cook and consume the meat during the Survive the Night timer. After the third time of having the supplies disappearing from my bags when the night sequence started, I watched the youtube video and had the "ah ha" moment.

I found that you could lure the piglets over near Rexxar and kill them before taking the quest. Then after starting the quest, I went and got the wood came back and looted the pigs. Then I cooked the meat and ate it as I needed it. The pigs were still there to skin after the quest was done.

I found the fastest way to do this was to kill the pigs I wanted next to one of the trees. Run back edge and start quest. Mount up loot the pigs I killed, chop tree, remount and cook food. By the time I got back hunger meter was just above half.

This has to be the least intuitive, most uninspired quest I've seen in a very long time. Not once has Blizzard tried to pass off such a high level of realism, but, yeah, I'm just too hungry I guess. Because my character who's literally been to alien planets doesn't know how to survive in the wild. /eyeroll

Great trick is to kill piglets in advance next to wood trees and let them be DO NOT LOOT, then tell Rexxar your ready. Might be just my screen but i could hardly see so dead pigs really helped.Also has been a long time since i had a hearty steak in wow let alone from a pig .Vikinng

I'll tell you where I got lost, so nobody else has to go through it. After going through the part where you chop down a tree, light a fire, cook the meat, you think you're done. But then it pops up and says Speak to Rexxar, however, his icon above his head is a white question mark and he already told you that you had to survive the night, so you assume you have the quest and you are waiting for the night to pass. Wrong. You have to speak to Rexxar again even though you have the quest and say you are ready to begin. Then the actual quest starts with the hunger bar. I stood around forever waiting on it to get dark. Finally I thought let's just try speaking to him again just in case we missed something. I had. You have to speak to Rexxar twice for the same quest.

To do this quest on 5/10/18. First accept the quest from Rexxar. Second reconnoiter the area noticing where dead trees are and killing some of the piglets but not all. There were a lot of them in the area and they will come attack you or your pet and it takes up time killing them. Third go back to the quest giver Rexxar and talk to him and tell him “I am ready” then it will get dark and the quest will start. Forth go out and kill piglets. I killed two then go to a dead tree and get wood by clicking a dead tree. I’m a skinner but I didn’t take the time to skin them. I am not sure why but the tree wood could not be gathered until you had meat from piglets. Fifth go back to Rexxar and click the fire pit. Sixth click the fire and the meat in your inventory will cook. Seventh click the cooked meat in your inventory. Seventh click the fire again to cook the second piece of meat. Eighth go out again and kill a piglet then the quest will complete. Ninth complete the quest with Rexxar.

IF ITS BUGGED and the meat doesnt create at your bag i got a trick for you . Dont click the meat who drop from the boars at your bag, drag the icon of the drop meat to the cooking fire and it will create the true meat

Quest is simple enough, but it would be nice if there was an indicator of your hunger, telling you when you needed to eat. I just kept killing, roasting and eating until it was over, destroying nature and my health in the process.. :P

When cooking the meat I found that I had to drag the meat over the fire, NOT click it in the bag, in order to cook it and for it to show up in the bag cooked and edible.

I loved the night effects.

When you accept this quest, Rexxar offers a short monologue explaining the wilderness skills you will need:

You need to eat to survive in the wild.

Boar meat makes a hearty meal when cooked over an open flame. It should not be eaten raw, however.

There are many berries that grow in this region. Some are edible, while others cause minor sickness when ingested. You can often determine which are safe to eat by their smell. A sweet aroma indicates the berry is unsafe to eat.

Firewood can be obtained from dying trees. They are easily identified by their dry, purple leaves.

This quest feels like the tutorial mode for something more complicated. Keeping track of one survival meter for a whopping 3 minutes? There's some wasted potential for a true minigame here.

There may have been a change since Legion, and this is somewhat inconsequential nowadays, but I found that you only need 2 pigs to survive the night if you're efficient - not 3 like most comments say. Each Hearty Steak refills 50 Hunger. If you eat one when you're at 49 Hunger, and the second when you're at 49 again, you'll still have 20+ Hunger left by the time the night ends.

Is this quest bugged now in 10.2? The wood from the trees never becomes clickable. I've tried with addons off, picked up over 10 pieces of meat, even found 5 berries but the wood never becomes clickable on the trees with purple leaves, or anywhere for that matter.

This quest is still bugged as of 13/11/2023 . So if you want to complete it and you can't get any wood just focus on finding all the berries. They are scattered mostly around the edges of the "quest area" and some of them are on the center. They look like some small weed so they are easily missed. Don't forget to get those that are down at the slope as well. You will need about 10 to make it through the "night"

Even if I disabled all my addons the quest was still bugged so don't bother.

Was trying this quest and it kept failing. Everytime I tried to mount up and go look for wood or raw meat I could see the spot for the fire vanishing... Then it hit me, this quest was made before Dragonriding! Tried the quest one more time, but this time I just went on foot and got it done. Simple like that, don't mount up. Did not try turning Skyriding off, maybe that could work too, but there absolutly no need to mount up to complete this.

Is this a requirement for the class hall? I can see and click the trees, and kill the pigs, but there are no berries in sight, and the meter depletes far too quickly to accomplish a blessed thing. Who made this quest?
