You have to use the portal to get back to your order hall... if you hearth back, you can't turn in the quest.

Just take the portal you initially took to the Firelands beside your elemental work order queue, and then you'll be right in front of the portal you need to take

Quickest way back is a long walk off a short pier.

Drop down off the cliff behind Smoldeous and rez back at the portal you need to leave by.

With the exception of Neptulon, all of the elemental lords and emissaries have Warcraft-style annoyance-at-being-poked lines. I especially recommend checking out Thunderaan's.
