You'll find these in Upper Skettis, they are scrolls that are located on the ground and also inside of pots where you find the stationary hostile NPC's, the scrolls are golden in color, they will show up like any other quest item that has a gear on to be clicked.

Don't waste your time going after the NPC's that are dropped in or are moving around, even though you can't really avoid them, go to the locations where the hostiles are stationary.

I posted a screen shot of what the scrolls look like.

1st quest - Go to quest area and find 5 notes.

2nd - 4th quest - activate 3 keys in three locations.
*Key coordinates are at in order of quests. (they are orange colored.)

1st Key - up the hills.
2nd Key - jump off the water fall, and it is right beneath the water fall.
3rd Key - enter the cave at that coordinate, as you enter there are three routes, go to the middle one and you will see the key.

Last quest - go to quest location, and turn the statues facing middle, click on the orb in the middle, you will be ported, just kill mob there and loot it and you are done.

This quest is poorly implemented; there are very few scrolls, they're difficult to see, and they spawn very slowly-- all in an area absolutely crawling with nontrivial mobs, so every fight is with 5-6 enemies. It took me 2 hours to complete. I hated, hated, hated this quest. Hopefully they hotfix it to be less annoying.

For those without Coords

fp: Akeeta's Hovel

p1:
collect 5 notes
- same area as upper skettis apexis daily
- they're small and sometimes out of sight.
- lousy spawn rate

p2:
Go to the top of the area in upper skettis you are in to collect notes
- it is a little hill that was just on the left as you entered
- the item is on/in the ground at the edge. clicky clicky

p3: waterfall
- near the NPC you turn freed prisoners in to if you're on the skettis daily.
- jump down to the bottom. the icon is underwater, on the bottom as in P2. click

P4:
- follow the river on the left side, cave is at the bottom of the next waterfall
- avoid all the mobs on the left bank and jump down to the river
- jump down the waterfall carefully ( you'll lose 1/3-1/2 hp )
- turn around, the cave is behind you
- the cave forks 3 ways, go straight ( very short ) 3rd icon on floor, click and leave.

P5:
- leave cave and ride down the river bed, through some nasty goblins to a thingababob with 3 icon thingies around it.
- when all three point inward, you can portal to the ( soloable ) quest mob.

P6: kill loot, hearth ( the portal that appears takes you back to P5 )

Well,

1st Quest: finding 5 Research Notes, I found mine at:

- 52,10 next to the banner on the left
- 51,10 next to the wall close to the working Arakkoa Outcast
- 54,10 next to the big stones one ground
- 52,12 closer to the right broken wall
- 51,10 on the round table with brick chairs

2nd Quest: The First Key: at 53,15 best ween the bones on the ground

3rd Quest: The Second Key: at 60, 12 Jump down the water fall and you will find it under water

4th Quest: The Final Key: Use your Reins of the Azure Water Strider or any water walking ability for some classes and run south east through the river to 73,35 (Cave entrance) use any fall dmg reduction, enter the cave and go straight and there you go.

5th Quest: The Apexis Device: Click on all three statues to face them to mid portal (You might need to click more than once) then use portal stone at 74,43

Last quest: Kill Aspect of Rukhmar and you will receive Amulet of Rukhmar

Has anyone had issues looting the items? I went there and found a few, they glowed, but I couldn't loot. Reloaded, still no looting. Relogged, still broken. I'm attempting an abandon and re-pickup now.

This quest is nuts. Very hard to get to, the mobs are tough and like to swarm, the whole area is crawling with horde, and when you die it takes 10 minutes to walk back to your body.
Abandoning!

But if you really want to do it, fly to Akeeta's hovel and walk north. I went to Crow's Crook the first time and spent a half hour trying to find a path through the mountains. The map is no help. Gah!

Info on the full "The Apexis Device" quest chain, one of the six quest chain criteria for the Master Relic Hunter (Alliance)/ Master Relic Hunter (Horde) achievement needed to get the Harrison Jones follower with unique Mentor trait. This chain takes place in Spires of Arak, the southernmost Draenor zone.

Bug Notes: Have at least one quest slot free in your quest log (i.e. at most 24 of 25) when you're on this chain, or a quest may become uncompletable. Also, can't complete these quests while in a raid group, and being in a raid group could screw up a quest so it becomes uncompletable. If a bug crops up, try logging off and back on, but or if a quest is still uncompletable, you can return to your garrison, delete the quest, and re-accept the quest on that step of the quest chain from the book on the ground next to Harrison Jones.

Optional suggestion before leaving garrison: If you can get the Skettis daily Apexis Crystal quest (Assault on Skettis (Alliance) or Assault on Skettis (Horde)), this quest chain takes you to the same area during the first quest, and you'll be there for a while, so you could do both at once.

1. Treasure Contract: Amulet of Rukhmar: Gather five Research Notes in the quest area around (to highlight the quest area in blue on your map, click on the quest on the right side of your map window). Two similarly time-consuming ways to get to the quest area are:

Fly to Akita's Hovel flightpoint in Shadowmoon Valley, mount and ride northwest above the river, then ride in the river at in Spires of Arak to avoid mobs, go south out of the river at just before a waterfall, and follow a winding path up the hill into the quest area. — OR —
Fly to Crow's Crook flightpoint in Spires of Arak, follow the path north/northwest, then turn northeast at the fork in the road at (there are some mobs to run through).

There are quite a few mobs in this area (it's the same area as is used for one of the Apexis daily quests), so unless you can stealth, expect some fighting. The spawn rate of the research notes is slow enough that it might take anywhere from a couple minutes to a couple hours, even though it's a small area. Notes are not hidden, but they're small, and sometimes in or next to a pot that could obscure it from certain angles. You do not get shared credit for notes when in a party; each party member must get five.

Other glowing quest objects (winged totems, etc.) in the area have caused some confusion; if you don't get a "hand" cursor when you hover over an object, it's probably from another quest.

After gathering five notes, click the "Click to complete quest" pop-up.

Wandering around looking is probably the most efficient method, but specific spawn points for Research Notes, from left to right, include:
(western tip of quest area)

(behind a pillar)

(up the hill, on block by east pillar)

2. Amulet of Rukhmar: The First Key: Located up the hill at ; looks like a circular golden compass pattern on the ground. Click it, then click the "Click to complete quest" pop-up.

3. Amulet of Rukhmar: The Second Key: Located at the bottom of the waterfall at , underwater; looks the same as the first key, on the bottom of the river. (From step 2, you can just walk due east down the steep hill, and follow the path at the bottom eastward to the shallow river and waterfall, jump down the waterfall, then swim downward.) Click the shiny circular "Mysterious Device", then click the "Click to complete quest" pop-up.

4. Amulet of Rukhmar: The Final Key: Located inside a cave, which has an entrance at (just follow the river downstream, using a Reins of the Azure Water Strider mount if you have one, jump down the next waterfall, then turn northwest to enter the cave). The key itself is at , just a short ways in the cave, to the left, just inside the middle of three branching tunnels. Click the shiny circular "Mysterious Device", then click the "Click to complete quest" pop-up.

5. Amulet of Rukhmar: The Apexis Device: Head southeast back out of the cave, get ready to fight a few mobs, and travel further down the river to . (You can probably just ignore the mobs if do this next step fairly quickly). There are three statues there. Click each statue until they face the center Portal Device - they turn 90° per click. Once all three are aimed at the device, it transforms into a functinoing Portal Stone. Clicking it teleports you to where you fight the nearby Aspect of Rukhmar (391K health)...the mob spawns at , and if it isn't there when you arrive, someone probably just killed it, and it should respawn in less than a minute. Kill and loot the mob to get the Amulet of Rukhmar, double-check you looted it (i.e. your bags weren't full), then hearth back to your garrison to turn the quest in to Bodrick Grey (Alliance) or Rokhan (Horde). Bug Note: Sometimes Aspect of Rukhmar simply does not respawn; if that happens, try realm-hopping by joining parties (not raids) of people on other realms to try and get to an instance of the zone where he is respawning.

Bag Space Tip: You can safely delete Compiled Research from your inventory. It's just for interesting reading. Each Harrison Jones quest chain leaves a similar soulbound book in your inventory (click for list).

I must say this is the absolutely WORST design for any quest I've ever experienced (and I'm just trying to get the research notes!). Quest items seem to be on a HUGELY long timer. They do NOT glow at all, there is no visual indication it IS the item you want/need (I got a few yesterday and am trying to get the rest today, so not a one time thing). The scrolls are basically kind of purple in color and there are tons of such scrolls that are NOT good for looting. You clear an area and start clicking and before you've done 2-3, more mobs spawn on top of you.

Add in a ton of mobs roaming around, with what appear to be a rather large aggro radius. I and my bodyguard have been killed because it just gets overwhelming (and this is after popping my survival CDs like Ice Block). Oh, and at least one rez pont is way, way out of the way... and literally impossible to get back to my body. The damn map shows clear sailing, flat terrain, but it's unsurmountable mountains in the way. Oh, and no flying while dead either.

I am serously disgusted.

So, you finally see a scroll. Just one mob in the way.

You start killing it and just when it is about to die you get attacked by 6 birds , halfway joined by another mob who spanws yet another (97 hp) bird. At the end joined by the now respawned mob you killed first.

5 Minutes later, while the ground is littered with dead mobs all around you, you go for the scroll but .. its gone.

Some other player desperate looking for scrolls ran away with it. Cant blame him ..

Rinse and repeat the above process for about an hour and you finally may have 5 scrolls.

You wonder if Blizzard actually test this sort of quests ..

The whole area was a facepalm to begin with thanks to one of the most horrible achievements in game. So they fixed it by drastically increasing the spawn rate of the mobs.

Brilliant!

Now the area is bloody annoying for another reason!

- louzy spawn rates on the scrolls
- scrolls are very difficult to spot
~~- no individual looting of the scrolls~~
- insane spawn rate of the mobs
- irritating mobs like hell who aggro you from all directions
- all mobs have 97 hp (30 hp for the flying birds)

And i thought that 37 cut scenes in Uldum where bad.

Harrison Jones is a lot nicer (to watch) in the movies then in this game ...

EDIT : it appears that at least the scrolls can be looted by everyone

Wow, that was misery. Took me well over an hour on my blood DK, and many times I was hammered by 6-7 mobs at a time (mostly trash with low health but they hit pretty hard), and finished them off with 1/3 health or so. And again, that was with a Blood DK. I can't imagine what would happen to a squishier class, especially without strong AoE.

By the time I didn't want to do it any more, I was more that halfway through it so I forced myself to finish on my DK, but have no desire to repeat it on other toons I play. Not for now, anyway.

Just for info, finished all the quests and got Harrison Jones as my follower.
Now there's an NPC (Surveyor Daltry - Explorers league) in my garrison where Harrison used to stand that still gives this quest.
Can anyone tell me if there's any point in doing this now other than the gold reward which I really don't need?

If you don't have the Reins of the Azure Water Strider, make sure to have a few Elixir of Water Walking/Draenic Water Walking Elixir

1. Treasure Contract: Amulet of Rukhmar Fly to Crow's Crook in Spires of Arak

Travel north to Skettis to coords 46,9 and proceed to loot the 5 Research Notes

1st Research Notes: 48.8,8.4
2nd Research Notes: 48.8,10.1
3rd Research Notes: 50,8.8
4th Research Notes: 50.4,9.3
5th Research Notes: 52,10.5

2. Amulet of Rukhmar: The First Key Travel to coords 53.0,14.8 for the first key

3. Amulet of Rukhmar: The Second Key Travel to the top of a waterfall to coords 60.4,11.7 and jump down into the water below

• Get the second key at coords 60.5,12.4

4. Amulet of Rukhmar: The Final Key Travel the river southeast to coords 73.1,34.2 and jump down (you will probably need to heal yourself down below).

• Enter the cave and travel to coords 71.8,34.6 for the final key

5. Amulet of Rukhmar: The Apexis Device Exit the cave and proceed to an Apexis "monument" at coords 73.4,43.

• Aim the three statues so that they are facing the Portal Device.
• Click the Portal Stone.
• After you are teleported, kill Sol-Shaper Krivin (391k health).

This is one of those few times each xpac where Eye of Kilrogg becomes useful! Warlocks can cast this spell in a safe area and use it to scout for the research notes without placing themselves in much danger. This allows you to bee-line for notes. If you can pull this off on a low-pop realm, even better!

You have to do this quest in one day or else you lose it the next day when the daily visitor resets! Make sure you do this on the same day that you get it.

If you're thinking about doing this quest save yourself the time and trouble. Simply sharpen a pencil to a fine point and shove it in your eye while simultaneously destroying 100 gold. It will feel better and be cheaper than doing this ridiculous quest.

Several others have detailed their troubles with the quest so I won't go over them again suffice to say in several years of questing across many different games this is the WORST quest I've run across yet. And from Blizzard that's no small achievement.

In addition to all the crap others of have pointed out with this quest as of April 15 2015 the final part is bugged on Dawnbringer and will not let you activate the portal to the final fight. And if you hop realms the final object disappears when you return to your server.

All in all, this quest sets a new standard in horribly bad for WoW.

No Issue , just make sure you turn the three bird statues around so the are facing the centre piece. once all 3 are in place a beam comes out of all 3 and you get the portal , job done

Thank GOD I was Ilvl 691 when I did that quest today.
The first part with the scrolls is just utterly annoying b/c of the insane respawn rate in that place.

Rest of the chain is okay though.
If you have the choice, do it on your char that has the best gear.

Protip: Don't hearth home and log off in disgust after you get the quest notes. Yes, eevn if you make sure to get the next step in the quest.

Came back the next day to try for the next step in the questline and I don't have it anymore.

Which means I'm going to have to go through that again.

The Harrison quests take place in a location where the Apexis dailies can also take place. If you want to maximize your time in a location, be sure to pick up the associated Missive from your Garrison Quartermaster ( Sergeant Crowler or Sergeant Grimjaw ).

You can have both the missive and the daily from the war planning table.

seriously the single most annoying quest in WOD maybe just period. never been this annoyed. so many mobs packed in small areas with very annoying vague coordinates. what were they thinking?

why is this and The Spirit Forge the only two treasure contract quests that I get in my Garrison - like I have done it on my main 3 times now and could have done it umpteen more times! .... my other toons keep getting it also! If these quests are random I'd like to get bliz's definition of what "Random" is!

If you die at Rukhmar it's really hard to get back. I tried multiple paths--I'm not certain there is a way back in by foot or mount. But--if you get back the the Lost Veil you can repeat the statue process and return through the portal there.

BTW--your follower can come along and help.

The many angry comments are clear hints, but I would like to emphasize that if you're playing a character who's not (a) a tank, or (b) a rogue or any class that has stealth, be prepared for mobs while doing this quest. If you're not adequately geared, you might want to seriously consider asking for groups to do this together, or band with other fellows who are also on this quest.

Is this quest even in the daily rotation quests you can get from Harrisson, it's been over 3 weeks I check daily with Harrisson either in my Garisson or someone elses and I never ever get it it'salways one of the other five and this one is the only one missing I got

In addition to all the other annoyances in this quest chain, don't worry about final step where it says you've looted Amulet of Rukhmar but the damn thing isn't in your bags. Apparently they stuck it in one of your body cavities or something. If the quest says you've looted it you can successfully complete the quest back at your garrison even though it doesn't look like you have it.

Never been so pissed off in my life. By now, I am short 235 gold after being repeatedly overwhelmed by annoying swarms of fast-respawning patrols (zoom out your camera and LOOK UP) in the first part . Stealth classes like rogues and druids will have it easy. All others will have to make the best of their AoEs.

However, the guides posted by the userbase has helped me so much. To elaborate... the scrolls (Research Notes in part one of the questline) DO NOT GLOW, but is best described as scrolls wrapped in dark purple. You definitely need a map addon to locate one of the scrolls. Move your mouse cursor over to confirm that it is indeed a quest scroll.

If you are a mage, pop Greater Invisibility to stealth past mobs. Keep your Prismatic Crystal handy in the event that you get jumped by the fast respawning level 100 mobs.

Some mobs, like the little orange phoenixes will disorient you for three seconds on death, so make sure to LOOK AWAY when you kill it!

Once I got past the obstacle course of collecting the research notes and approaching the final key, I had a misfortune of encountering the rare mob "Shadow Hulk" in the cave. He is like a gigantic, Tauren, stunlock rogue. He only has two attacks, a annoying charge, and a annoying stomp-stun that has no diminishing returns and hits like a truck.

If he manages to catch you between your blinks and CCs while a swarm of patrolling flying octopuses gnaw on you, you are pretty much screwed. At this point, I already popped all my cooldowns, including both Ice Blocks/Cold Snap with Regenerative Ice.

If you see the Shadow Hulk, AVOID HIM. The final key is NOT in that room! Go back to the central path, it should be the one to the right of that cave, and all of the keys look like golden gongs or plates.

Like I mentioned before, install TomTom or HandyNotes or DBM, anything with the ability to plot coordinates if you want to complete it before the daily timer runs out. Yes, you gotta do ALL the steps in one day.

Edit: Just completed it (Last Part of Questline). Surprisingly much easier. All you gotta do is either fight, stealth, or invisible ghost yourself past the flying octopus mobs further down the river outside the cave, and keep going past the infected goblins holding out with guns and barricades (Hostile), until you see three Arakkoa Statues. Keep turning them until the orbs (their front) face the center of the "device", and click the device. Make sure you clear the "Befuddled" Ogre Mobs, I saw one patrolling.

The fight against the Arakkoa boss is easy. He appears to be 391K HP but is in fact 468K HP after the cutscene. I showed him my distaste for his kind and their merciless ganking by dropping a Prismatic Crystal, a Frozen Orb, a Frost Bomb, and a flurry of critting Ice lances until I vaporized him. Loot the mob, and hearth back to Garrison.

Don't break your keyboard with rage after you turn in the quest. Harrison Jones is only giving you 150 gold for your trouble. And a questing achievement....

Whooopeee.

Having played since release, I have done annoying quests, I have done boring quests, I have done quests that have been a right down pain in the ass... but this quest is something else entirely... This was the first time I've actually wanted to punch my fist through my monitors in anger. It's infuriating on a whole other level than anything I've done in this game for the past 10-11 years. It's the quest that will make you pull your hair out, grind your teeth to oblivion and probably want to make you give up on life.

After reading below comments, definitely took tanking bodyguard (Illona) on this one. At one point, in courtyard area where most scrolls are, was fighting over a dozen varied mobs at once. Didn't help that some scrolls are hard to see (and this is not an area you want to run around randomly searching in). Shadowpriests, recommend keeping focus on tank bodyguard, renew their shield constantly, and just spam Mind Sear. At iLevel 685, it was definitely doable. But as others have said, what a freaking pain....

This is the kind of content you do 1 time per character to get the achievement for a follower and never again. These are suppose to be challenging solo daily not something that makes you want to pull your hair out. There are tons of small and large group daily. The gold reward is just not worth the hassle.

Most the solutions involve using a character that has a special talent. Gee it was easy on my brewmaster I just spam my statue to get the mobs attention and grab the notes. Or you get a large group that can deal with the huge respawn rate.
Does not help those who do not have a special talent.

Maybe if the notes were always in the same place you could get a strategy but the random and the massive mob spawn rate makes this impossible.

So the cheese method everyone can do is naked corpse scouting. Once you learn the path up the hill from the graveyard it is not too hard to complete. You many times can get 2 if not 3 and get it done in only 2 deaths.

It really shows poor design of a quest when the best solutions involve non standard game play.

I hate this *!@#ing mission. I have died more times during this mission than my entire WoW career. The respawn rates of the enemies are stupid high, the god damn birds that fly around and patrol will just jump into a fight making any of your fights just over the top hard.

I hate this mission. Bring a friend.

It has been said but really needs adding again the best way to find these items is to go to Interface>Display>Outline Mode and set it to DISABLE. The sparkles are 100 times more effective at highlighting these scrolls this way.

As many others i had a hard time finding those scrolls on one of my alts when i did this quest a second time, on my main tho did it with no problem at all.

I flew around for ½ an hour and couldent find any of those supposed items.
Luckerly i was okay geared 715ish so the mobs went down pretty fast but i can imagine people with less gear having a very bad time, completing this quest. As most of the mobs are lvl 100 and dont just fall over.

Furthermore it does not help that the scroll's you are suppose to pick up are darkish colours like the ground where they are placed and the glowing outerline that are suppose to indicate that it is a questitem is barely visable to the point that i would wish that they have kept the sparkly spark indication instead as it used to be.

Tip: But what i did after flying around for ½ an hour was fly out of the zone and back in again seem to fix it because with in 5 mins after that i found all 5 of them. So i guess it can be a phasing isseue.

Simply put, if you really really want Harrison as a follower, wait until your item level is about 800 and then it will be no problem. Otherwise, don't bother. The effort (and repair bill) is not worth your time. Plus one of the two thousand mobs that will attack you will kill your bodyguard, so no leveling those guys for an hour. If the reward was worth it, the pain would be minimal but at this point, it's an exercise in masochism.

Had no trouble with this on my newly dinged discipline priest (ilvl 612), though dodging the mobs was a bit of a trial. However, then I got to the last step only to find I couldn't damage the final boss (Aspect of Rukhmar) at all. None of my targetted abilities would cast on it. I have no idea why.

So I just Holy Novaed it to death.

Yes, they are level 100's but this actually isn't too difficult. My iL is 680, and while I'm a tank spec, which may make it easier, it's not hard to avoid mobs and such. I'd recommend having Draenor Flying just to make it a little easier to avoid things, beware of hovering too close lest you get a bunch of Kaliris, though. (Flashbacks of BC Skettis!) The notes were kind of annoying to find until I saw one, then, knowing what to look for, it wasn't bad.

TBH, some of the advice here is a little silly. For me, this was the last quest I needed for Harrison as my follower, and it took almost a month for this to even show up, and I was stalking the pre-made groups pretty heavily. If you find it, just go for it, you might have more trouble finding it again, otherwise!

Having played a shadow priest for most of my wow existence, I know that sometimes, clothies just have it rough. This quest chain is probably on that list, but I wouldn't tell people just to forego it, especially with the uncommonness of Harrison showing up with the quest you need. If your server is higher pop, or you have some good friends/guild, even the pre-made groups, you should be fine. Happy Hunting, and just my two cents!

On a random note, there's a chance for a Dread Raven to drop off a rare mob nearby, Solar Magnifier.

Easily the most tedious and least entertaining of the relic hunter quests. Nothing fun or creative, just pains-taking searching for hard to spot items with low spawn rate.

Pull the mobs away from the quest items. As it is the item is so hard to see and when a swarm of mobs you kill pile on top of them it's impossible to see.
