Any mobs you kill in the area give you a 20 second buff called Pheromone Tracking. Having this buff will show a red cloud/trail surrounding the Eyes of the Empress, even when you are too far away to target them. The Eyes of the Empress are small maggots crawling around on the ground. Click on the Eyes of the Empress to collect them.

You can also see the Eyes of the Empress when not having the buff, but only if you're really close. You don't see the red cloud then, just the maggots. Collecting an Eye of the Empress also gives you Pheromone Tracking.

I had to increase my view distance and particle density settings in order to see the clouds before the pheromone buff wore off. If I hadn't done that I would probably still be doing this quest.

Increase your particle density to be able to see those bugs from far away. They will look like a redish cloud on the ground.

It is also worth nothing that killing one of them refreshes your seeing buff. So you only need to kill one mob in the area and fly around looking for more bugs as your buff gets refreshed.

There are some commonly asked questions in the zone's general chat on my server so I felt like I should answer some here.

1) You do not need the seemingly related (but actually unrelated) zone-wide buff that gives you a similar pheromone tracking buff.
2) When killing any mob in the quest area you will receive a 20 second buff. This allows you to see red clouds where the mob you need is located, but the mob itself will not show until you are in the cloud! This means that /tar commands/macros will not work. If you rely on them it will seem like there are none of the required mobs around you.
3). Once you enter one of the red clouds you can see once you have the buff, after a second or two the "mob" you need will phase in. You do not need to kill it, simply click on it and you will receive credit.
5) You cannot click/"kill" the quest mob while mounted, but you will be automatically dismounted and won't have to deal with a "You are mounted" error. I am not sure about Flight Form.
6) Each time you kill one of the mobs in a red cloud the buff allowing you to see the clouds will reset to its original duration of 20 seconds, meaning if you are proficient you can do it all in one go.

The red clouds use your video settings' "Particle Density" option. If you have this set too low you may have trouble seeing this. Blizzard will, hopefully, realize this oversight in the future and update the quest accordingly.

While your "View Distance" setting is also important so you can see further away, please remember increasing it is almost useless without also increasing "Environmental Detail". While View Distance will let you see terrain further away, Environmental Detail is the setting that actually allows the more distant terrain to be populated with objects.

If you feel that you need to increase your video settings to allow yourself to do this quest but your computer cannot handle it and starts to lag out, remember you can lower other settings such as Texture Resolution, Shadows, etc to compensate.

these were pretty much invisible when my comp had lowest particle density, switch to ultra and they were easy to find.

sidenote- asking about this quest in general chat has a sort of ironic humor, when ppl say learn to read idiot you have to kill stuff, even though i posted "i know you have to kill @#$% but i still cant find them". So learn to read before mocking others about not reading quests.

FLY! Sometimes a LONG way, with view zoomed out, to see these on ANY video settings.
Look for pale pink if you are on low settings... can be seen for sure, it's just hard to see and rare.... particularly if there are other guys questing there.

Even after setting the settings to every possible configuration, these bugs were invisible. I'll submit a screenshot as proof, that has a freezing trap that caught one, and showing me clearly inside the red cloud.

I'm colorblind and I had a hell of a time with this. My draw distance and particle density were already maxed and I still wasn't seeing the clouds. I got a couple by sheer luck I think. Then I noticed another blue quest area farther north, up where you do the spider/egg dailies. I went up there and found it a bit easier to see the clouds there on the flat ground.

After begining the quest, simply head to (63:41) and kill something. That will grant to a 20 second buff called pheormone tracking. Look for a red cloud ( Thx to all the earlier comments uping ur partical density really helps Thx yall !) ...Here's where it gets easy.

Once you loot one of the eyes of the empress (maggot) it will refresh the above mentioned buff . So just fly or stealth to the next 5 red clouds, loot and done ...very easy quest :)

I've come across a few buggy maggots that don't phase in no matter what you do - so if they don't show up even after running inside the red cloud for a few seconds, move onto another cloud.
Personally, going back and forth between the northern half (temple remains) and the southern half (mire/basilisk field) worked best when I encountered the perma-invis ones.

maybe i am the only one but i go to the terrace, i kill a mob , i see the red cloud but nothing spawn near the cloud nothing to loot or to attack, just a red cloud moving on the ground while i can't do nothing on it! i put the view distance to the maximum but still can't do nothing. Any suggestions?

It has take a while, before i discovered that u can see a red smoke in the grund. The best way: You fly to the smoke and take the Eyes, then u have 20 seconds to find the other red smoke. I completed the quest in 1 minut after i understand what i have to do.

As of today's date, 10132013, this is still in game.
Kill stuff, any thing, look for red clouds. Inside of the clouds will be yellow beetles.
Those are what you want.

Killing mobs for buff didn’t work for me. Instead slowly search the ground for small glowing insect. Take it and the buff will be now active. You can see the red clouds and complete the quest faster.

Since the kills need to be eligible for exp (level appropriate), it can be hard to do this quest at level cap. You have two options to trigger the clouds that make grubhunting easier;
1. Hunt for the first bug manually. This is easiest in the ruins, as the grubs can be hard to spot in the fields.
2. If you're also doing the "Nope Nope Nope" quest, you can trigger it by destroying a Dreadspinner Egg with the Shado-Pan Dragon Gun.

Went over the entire area on the map it said the bugs were, never found a single one. Previous comments say max level characters need to manually find the first one, but i found that impossible so just gave up :(

Got this quest today 11/14/20. Couldn't see the Eyes of the Empress at all. As a demon hunter, my work around was to use spectral sight. This not only allowed me to see them, but also click them and get quest credit. Even with the pheromones buff, I could see the red clouds but not the actual clickable slug. Just the cloud. ONly spectral sight worked, so it was a 30 second cooldown between eyes -_-

This quest was just given to me and low and behold there are no grubs to be found, Playing on ultra with fov changed to super close to super far away and yet there are no grubs to be found :S

I got this quest for the first time on 02Dec2020 and wasn't able to see anything I needed to complete the quest. Still broken.

In 2021 this is just as broken as most of the comments from 2020 indicate; I also searched for a while for any bugs and found none, and the buff I was promised was never given.

If you're a Demon Hunter, try Spectral Sight as one comment mentioned; otherwise, until/unless it's fixed or someone finds a more general solution that's confirmed to work in 2021, I suggest just skipping this one.

As of June of 2022 this quest is still impossible apparently. I'm on my level 51 Hunter and cannot complete it. No buff is given to me and I cannot for the life of me manually track down these slugs. I have tried every suggestion in this entire thread including using the gun for the egg related quest and messing with my graphics settings--they were already on ultra and max FOV but I played with random changes to them as well and saw no difference. I just wanted to finish grinding my rep but also it sucks that there's a quest out there that is IMPOSSIBLE to complete. I submitted a ticket and got back the auto-response with suggestions I have ALREADY TRIED. I am attempting to escalate it further but we all know how Blizz staff is.

As of today this quest is still completely broken. While I can get the buff and see the clouds, I stand in them for seconds on end, following their center and there is just NOTHING to click on or interact with. Only the red cloud.

Same with War Mode off.

Oh, and just for the record I went back and tried this outside Pandaria Timewalking Campaign and that's when I couldn't even get the buff.

Quest is still broken, I got it today. Reported the bug, hopefully they will fix it, but since it's been broken since 2020 (according to comments) and I'm sure I'm not the only one to have reported it, I don't have much hope for it being fixed.

Seems to work now, asked the Questgiver for his Assistance and was able to see and interact with the bugs in the red mist.

As of July 2, 2023 - Pandaria Remix

In a zone, that is easy on the campaign and daily quests, this is unusually a pain in the rear. I was doing everything listed in the comments. No luck. By chance, I moved my mouse and got a hand for clicking over the grub in the red (more pink for me) cloud. Don't just stand it them, run to them. Once I saw how they were done, I was able to run from one to the next and got them all in about 1.5 minutes. Of course, that depends on your speed. But in general just look around you and ahead of you. All you have to do it click on the grubs. Just wait until you get a "hand/grasp" pointer. Everytime I found the spot it was very close to the grub.

Debugging the Terrace

Stomp out 6 Eyes of the Empress around the Terrace of Gurthan. Killing anything will grant you Pheromone Tracking, helping you detect them.

Description

If this Empress is truly possessed by fear and paranoia, she will have sent scouts to every corner of the land in order to cement her control.

These scout grubs are likely everywhere, but difficult to spot with the naked eye. Better to track them by the pheromone trails they leave behind.

I've already... gifted you... a reactive toxin that will reveal these trails to you for a brief time after experiencing the thrill of victory.

Go now to the Terrace of Gurthan and root out these spies.
