The 250 Smouldering Essences are probably something similar to the Shadowmourne quest A Feast of Souls which before Cataclysm required you to kill 1000 mobs in the Icecrown Citadel raid, but now only requires 50. I'd imagine that with the lower requirement, it could be one of three things.

Blizzard thought that 1000 was way too much, backed up by the reduced amount of souls in Cataclysm for Shadowmourne.

There is less trash in Firelands than Icecrown Citadel or not being able to kill trash in both 10 and 25 man raids is a reason for the reduced amount

This being the last quest and requiring to actually KILL Ragnaros in Firelands (only presumed for now), Blizzard didn't want those who have already cleared Firelands before completing this chain farm the raid over and over or at least for as long as we did for Shadowmourne souls.

Looks like there is more to just killing rag for the heart then we think with

The staff also has an on use effect: Use:Siphons the Smouldering Essence from the corpse of a powerful creature in the Firelands

So we don't just kill 250 things have to to target them and use it 250 times.

Looking up Siphon Essence shows its only a 20 yrd range and takes almost 9 sec for each soul.

@fury... no blizzard explicitly said that the 25man would progress roughly 2-2.5 times faster which it is ...that has to happen on all steps of the quest or else it wouldn't really be 2-2.5 times faster.

What i think IS strange is that heroic modes are more than double normal modes. I am not all that opposed to it just surprised considering cinder drop differences are barely noticeable.

@xenje That would make a lot more sense if others aren't getting it from the chest. Many other items (the fragments/branch/charged stones) have all had separate pick ups for the items when there is only 1 of that item. i could see it being possible that you also need 250 first. I guess no one will find out for sure until either someone loots it or someone gets to 250 essences and figures it out.

Again though there is no way they are requiring heroic Rag to obtain the legendary... they specifically aren't requiring any hard modes to obtain the legendary... just to accelerate getting one.

Do you have to be using the staff during the boss kill to collect essences or can you equip it after the boss is dead?

Players should never get Rage of Ragnaros on Heroic difficulty. Rage of Ragnaros will only be given on normal difficulty if someone on the legendary quest line has 250 shards. Heart of Flame should always be given on Heroic difficulty, even if a player doesn’t have Rage of Ragnaros, but does have 250 shards.

Yup I am confirming 8 for normal kills, received 8 from Baleroc and 8 from Majordomo. 0 from Ragnaros himself obviously (no body to siphon) and after the recent hotfix it appears that he does not do the AOE knockback effect over the person with the staff until you are able to loot the Heart of Flame AKA until you have collected all 250 souls

Azranos post about how much time it will take to finish this quest in 25m seems accurate. So as long as your guild is at least 4/7 heroic it will take the minimum 3 weeks, assuming 17 souls come from each heroic kill

For anyone curious, 10m HM appears to be dropping 7 or 8 Smouldering Essences, so 15/2 bosses. Or, the same as doing it in a 25m pug.

Sporadically places a living bomb effect on you that causes no damage to the target itself but explodes within a small radius after 5 seconds. Simply stay away from other raidmembers.

The Heart lies in the middle of the lavapool after Ragnaros disappeared, you need to loot it while being overhealed.

Interesting point to note, might it be possible for a person not involved in the kill the be summoned in whilst the smoldering buff is still active and then siphon it, subsequently not getting saved? If possible would said person be able to arrange/pay a number of guilds to siphon their kills if they do not have someone on to this stage of the quest?

anyone else think that 14 weeks for this quest ALONE is a little ridiculous for 10m guilds? i know this staff isnt just ANY staff but geez, this is gonna take me forever, since i am only up to like 50 cinders atm

Hadn't seen this posted yet and it seemed fairly important:

To loot the item from normal mode Ragnaros, you must survive the entire encounter with Rage of Ragnaros and, when Rag submerges, the item Heart of Flame will spawn in the center of the lava. I died getting it, but I'm sure it's possible to cooldown through it.

Again, the Heart of Flame will spawn in the center of the lava pool Rag emerges from if the person with 250 souls survives the fight with Rage of Ragnaros.

Edit2: The 10N numbers are outdated due to the buff a day or two after the original nerf.

Edit: Believe this list holds true after 9/6 50% nerf. Only HC boss kills are affected. That said, 10m guilds that are 7/7 also become at least a 1/7 HC guild, so the droprate on heroic REALLY stings for any 10m guild that had a chance to complete one before Christmas. /endEdit

If these do end up being the real droprate for 10m essence siphoning, 10m guilds are at a more than 2.5 disadvantage compared to 25m guilds. 25m guilds will have 3 legendary staves before 10m even get their first.

Assumptions:

10m will get Cinder quest by week 5, only terrible RNG will stop that
10m gets 20 Cinders per boss kill x 7 a week.
25m gets 2.5 Embers, 50 Cinders per boss kill x 7 a week.
25m subsequent DTR completion after first is 6 weeks..
Collecting cinders the same week as getting 25/25 Embers is not possible under this model. However, doing delegation before killing bosses is possible.

Amusing note: Sending the next Runestaff (phase 2 staff) person to a separate raid (even 10m) to collect essences while the current one finishes his drastically cuts down on the time the following (#3) will complete his DTR. This is due to having to said next person having to wait 2+ weeks to begin to collect essences after already forming his Runestaff. Using said method would possibly have 3 DTRs by week 22 maybe. If splitting into two 10m raids, it will slow down the following staves and comes out to be the same as having stayed in a single 25m.

Amusing note 2: If essence collection is equivalent, then 10m raids will complete their first DTR just as 25ms complete their third.

Total completion time for 10man heroic for anyone who's interested:

Phase 1: 25 to collect, 0-1 per boss, takes 4-5 weeks. I was very lucky to get away with only 4, not wasting any boss kills on the transition to move to second phase.
Phase 2: 1000 to collect, 23-26 per heroic boss and Ragnaros, takes 6-7 weeks, more if you kill some bosses on normal. For me it was 6 weeks + 2 bosses, ended up with 1019, bit bad luck.
Phase 3: 250 to collect, ~7 (unconfirmed for now) per heroic boss, 6+ weeks to complete. I got nerfbatted myself, killing the remaining 4 bosses for the week during nerfed droprates, only getting 3-5 per boss :/

Total: 16 weeks minimum, plenty more if you're not killing bosses on heroic. Further items 6-7 weeks each. Just imagine 25man getting them at 2.5x speed, new legendary every 2-3 weeks? Same as if they actually dropped off a boss with 30-40% droprate. Even most common epic weapons aren't that common. For once, I fully agree with Bliz nerfing the droprates. They're just months late with the nerf.

We didn't particularly want a lot of in circulation, so partially intended. We really do want to keep legendary weapons legendary, and Dragonwrath ended up being more readily available than we were comfortable with.
Nonetheless, we should have recognized that the completion rate was faster than we wanted, and taken action, sooner.

The above (huge nerf to the smouldering essence drop rate) was shortly changed after Blizzard realised this would result in approximately a 5:1 ratio of Dragonwraths obtained in 25 man compared to 10 man (due to the fact that 25-man guilds had completed 1-2 of them already, while 10-man had completed none). The day after the first hotfix, this happened:

• 25-player heroic has 44% lower drop rates in phase 3 relative to 4.2 launch.
• 25-player normal remains unchanged from 4.2 launch.
• 10-player heroic remains unchanged from 4.2 launch.
• 10-player normal has 33% higher drop rates in phase 3 relative to 4.2 launch.

Meaning that 25H guilds will receive fewer Dragonwraths than expected, while the 10N guilds will get a few more. By "fewer" in the top guilds, they are likely to receive 4-5 staves still, instead of the 7 or so they were expecting. 10N guilds are never going to see more than one, and are unlikely to even see one before 4.3.

TL,DR:
- 25H drops 10 essences per boss; quest completed after 5 weeks
- 10H drops 7 essences per boss; quest completed after 6 weeks
- Normal modes will drop 10-15% fewer essences
- Guilds will NOT need to switch to 10 man to get more staves, as the other steps all take far far longer

That's another issue, though it has less to do with drop rates and more to do with how the quest can reasonably be completed. We came up with a "parallelization" concept where a player could be on phase 3 of making Dragonwrath, while another raider in the same group could be on phase 2. We thought that would feel better for the players involved, and it did, but more because they were getting their staves faster than for any other reason. The real problem with this idea is that it made it very difficult to balance the time investment it takes to create a staff. The first staff might take x amount of time to create, but then subsequent staves could potentially come out the door a lot faster.

Legendaries aren't very legendary if 20% of the raiding population is carrying them -- never mind the ripple effects that their presence can have on game balance in PvE and PvP. Ultimately, 'parallelization' made a too powerful item, too easy to get, too quickly. In short, it was a mistake that we regret, and one we won't be repeating in the future. It also left us with a situation that we needed to address, though, which is why we nerfed the quest item drop rates to begin with.

All of that is merely by way of explaining how we arrived at this point. The heart of the issue for many of you has been 10-player raid drop rates and I’d like to take a moment to thank those of you who provided clear, constructive feedback in these threads and elsewhere. It’s been really valuable during our deliberations and helped us arrive at a decision that we think will address our concerns and yours.

We’ve decided to revert the drop rate change for 10-player heroic Firelands completely. We’ll also be slightly buffing the drop rates in 10-player normal. In the end, we should get the following results:

• 25-player heroic has 44% lower drop rates in phase 3 relative to 4.2 launch.
• 25-player normal remains unchanged from 4.2 launch.
• 10-player heroic remains unchanged from 4.2 launch.

Completed the quest yesterday, sharing some info,

-You can safely Iceblock, You won't loose the debuff required for the heart to drop.

-If you wipe, and manage to invis/reset the boss, you keep the debuff. Actually If you engage again you get a second debuff (and yes, you'll explode twice a minute > you should'nt do that :p).

-You have plenty of time to loot the heart, so don't rush if your healers are OOM, we had a messy kill and had the time the rez everyone, and full regen. Every hybrids should be spamming heal too.

-Tol Barad on use 400 resist trinket is awesome especially during phase2, It'll be up everytime you'll explode, and it helps in lava too.

-If you have an average raid dps, (meaning you do 3 adds wave in phase 2), the timing on the explosion shouldn't be an issue. I could stay with the raid for the 3 seeds explosions.

I'm having some issues with this portion of the quest, for the past few weeks, my guy that has been working on the quest is stating that he is only getting 3-5 souls a boss kill, 25m both H and N.

Anyone else can confrim that the drop ratio is that low?

Drops rate for 10m normal is 3 to 5 by boss. I'm getting a average of 3.9.
Only got 3 on Baleroc bacause i only needed 3 to finish my quest :)

If you have a few people on the same part of the "heart of flame" quest only ONE person will be able to able to drain the bosses you kill in firelands.(I asked a GM about this) the response is shown below

A couple of items of note on this quest:

I completed it last night and the Heart of Flame spawned after getting Ragnaros to 10% but I did not get the Rage of Ragnaros buff to reduce damage so I could properly retrieve the Heart of Flame.

Make sure your healers heal you while you are getting it from the lava.

Also bugged on me and continued to cause me to explode periodically even after Ragnaros was not longer in the room. The debuff disappears as soon as you leave the Firelands instance.

To turn in this quest: Go to the Cathedral area in Stormwind. There will be a quest turn in for this.

The serie of this item has been a total waste, never seen something like this and I've been around since Molten Core.

Why would you be forced to do Ragnaros normal, a heroic kill should be more than enough to complete this. Be forced to put a person in a pug to complete the chain *facepalm*.

Much like during the quest Time Grows Short, while you are on this quest every few hours you will get an emoted messaged declaring "You feel a surge of power as Tarecgosa's essence manifests itself."

It's neat, but only for flavor. There actually is no buff or surge of power.

ADDENDUM: Well, it only took Blizzard the entire remainder of the the expansion to fix the stupid thing, but Tarecgosa now properly talks to you during the quest chain from inside your own body. ...Would have been nice to have this during the actual quest, but sure, why not, fix it when the staff will be replaced in a few weeks...

I have to throw out a word of warning about race and/or faction changing with parts of this legendary quest chain active. When you pay Blizzard for that service you also get a complimentary quest log wipe as part of the process.

What this means is that you will have this quest removed from your log. What this means for this particular quest I can't say for sure because, unlike with All-Seeing Eye and Time Grows Short, the "smouldering essence" you have to collect is not actually a physical object that you possess in you Inventory. If this quest get removed, you very well could lose all progress you made towards it.

Now, I can't say that for sure that you'd be utterly screwed over like that, and maybe the GMs after a little digging could restore previous progress... but do you really want to be the one to test this? So heads up, I'd recommend against big paid changes to race, class or faction while on the collect parts of this quest, and this one most specifically.

Just Did FL10 Normal.

Got 25 Smouldering Essences.
Beth - 5 Smouldering Essences.
Shannox - 3 Smouldering Essences.
Rhyo - 3 Smouldering Essences.
Alyz - 4 Smouldering Essences.
Baleroc - 5 Smouldering Essences.
Majo - 5 Smouldering Essences.

That means that drops rate is terible.
More 9 weeks to get it.

Next week I'll do FL25 Normal.

I decided to keep track of all the essences that I collected during my stage 3 quest.
Now that I've finished, here is the table with all the information.

Heroic kills are also in bold:

As expected, it's consistent with the conclusion that 10 man normal mode bosses drop between 3 and 5 cinders, while 10 man heroic mode bosses drop between 7 and 8 cinders. We killed some bosses (Beth'tilac, Shannox, Ryolith and Baleroc) in normal mode during the second week, in order to ease our way into their related achievements (for the meta). In lthe last Beth'tilac kill as I was only missing 5 essences, there is no way to confirm how many it dropped, however I'm assuming it would be 7 or 8 nonetheless.

i done 6/7 fl normal 10 last night and i got 24 essances 5 from rhyo domo nad alys beth shgannox and baleroc all gave me 3 each so the drop rare on 10 normal is defo 3-5 a boss now

last week i did hc shannox 10 man and i got 7 essances

so thats me at 44/250 2nd week on the essances will up date when i do fl next reset

There is currently an issue effecting collection/syphon and Blizzard is aware of it. Unfortunately due to it being a "quest progress" the syphon can not be restored or fixed by a GM. Additionally they can't summon the corpse for you to syphon. Affected about 1/3 of our bosses this past week.

I suggested that Bliz change it to an item like the other two phases that work fine, or allow the syphon to happen regardless of loot bugging out.

You don't need to actually have the staff equipped for the Ragnaros fight. I got the debuff a few seconds in and was able to loot the heart at the end without having it ever equipped, even on the pull.

I am an elemental shaman who has been working on completing the entire legendary chain solo and have finally managed to complete 7/7 normal Firelands (as elemental only). I started this way back during ToT and worked on it on and off, at first just getting embers/essences off of Alysrazor and Beth, but after siege came out and I got heroic level gear, I found I was able to do more and more of the zone solo.

What better way to prove your elemental supremacy than by defeating the lord of fire himself by vomiting giant globs of magma at him!

Majordomo is the hardest fight in the zone. I'm sure enhance can cheese him with far superior 1 minute DPS, but it's still doable as elemental, despite needing to do about 400k dps while also keeping yourself alive (to the tune of about 25-30k hps) What a jerk.

Edit: Still no normal mode crown of flame which I have never seen drop, even in months of killing him on 25 when it was current.

Of note, it is possible to have Beth'tilac's corpse skinned out from under you before you've collected the essences from her corpse. Just had this happen to a friend... Oops!

Regardless of what others have posted, you most definitely CAN collect the Heart of Flame the same week you have collected your 250 Smouldering Essences. I just did it, got 250 on Baleroc and then went on to kill Rags on 25HM and got the heart in the center after he died.

You have to be on the quest to be able to siphon essences after killing a boss.

You cannot siphon if you kill bosses first and then get the quest to siphon essences although the bodies are still present in the instance. You will see the error message "You can't do that yet" if you try.

You can keep your progression on this quest whenever you do a Faction Change; your smouldering essences will remain in-tact. Submitted a ticket regarding of what will happen and this is the response.

Just make sure you don't destroy them yourself. You can keep them in your bank and then as soon as you pick up the quest again and get another essence, the quest tracker will update. :)

Okay, obviously people have asked and it's been confirmed that you CAN NOT siphon essences from the same boss twice. So two people doing this quest together can't benefit from the same bosses. But no one has addressed whether it would be possible to leave the instance without siphoning, leave party, and then come back in. Since both people are locked to that instance, the boss/bosses would still be dead, but without being in the same party they would basically see different instances, right? So if they did that, could both then siphon? Or would the debuff disappear even though the body doesn't?

A note on what happens when you faction change half way through this:

Problem: cannot pick up quest line for Legendary Staff.

Explanation: I was half way through Heart of Flame as Alliance when I faction changed. I understand that progress to completion of Heart of Flame (250 Smouldering Essences) will be lost due to faction change - that is OK - but I cannot restart the quest now I am Horde. Went to Kalecgos in Coldara but no quest available. Flew around looking at previous parts of the chain and no luck either. I still have Runestaff of Nordrassil in my inventory. Hope you can help me please? I have checked on wowhead etc for advice but cannot find any.

Been working on this quest on and off for a while now. I have tried this on 25 man NORMAL and 10 man HEROIC and I get the same amount per boss on both modes. 3 essences per boss. Max. I have never gotten more than 3 per boss no matter how many time I've done this instance. I have not tried 25 man heroic simply because I heard it had been nerfed to the point it wasn't worth the time. I have seen all those hard to understand charts people are posting and I see 8 drops here, 5 there, 7 of the next boss, etc. and I have NEVER gotten over 3 per boss on any mode I've tried. Next week I'll try 25M heroic just to see if its any better or not. But I have a feeling I will still only get 3 per boss no matter which mode I try.

** UPDATE*** I just did it on 25m Heroic. Same thing . Only getting 3 per kill. So, doesn't matter which mode you do it on you will only get 3 per kill now

THE BELOW ONLY APPLIES TO NORMAL DIFFICULTY. On HEROIC, the encounter is unaffected, and the Heart of Flame is simply looted from Ragnaros afterwards.

Once you have all the 250 Smouldering Essences, it's time to retrieve the Heart of Flame. This will affect the encounter against Ragnaros, in the following ways:
You, the wielder of the staff, will have the debuff Rage of Ragnaros.
Every minute, you'll get affected by Rage of Ragnaros, the debuff counting down from 5 seconds. It is shown by a Hellfire-like effect.
This means that you'll have to stay away from everyone else when the effect happens, as every person within 8 yards of you will be knocked back and take heavy damage.
You'll need to survive the ENTIRE encounter in order to be eligible to loot the Heart of Flame.
The Heart spawns in the middle of the Lava Pool. Be sure to have your healers spam heal you at this point. Don't worry, it doesn't matter if you die here, and the looting is instant.

if you do this quest...you are gonna HATE BLIZZARD! soloing 25 man heroic full clears, the first 6 bosses can either be helpful to your cause...or be a giant pain! Each boss can drop anywhere from 7-11 on 25 man heroic but its not always consistent, if your looking to get this done fast....think again. Minimum of 5 weeks ...if your lucky

Just to be clear, all you have to do is have collected the 250x Essences, then kill Rag. Nothing special, just killed him and looted clicked the item. Ezpz.

Just a quick info for everyone what is farming. You don't need to havbe the Runestaff equipped on the kill. Just have it in your Bag and have the quest in the Log.

Since nobody posted it here and had to try it my self and got the Essences. Good Luck on your Legendaries then.

So for anyone who is done with smouldering essences and is wondering how to do the next step to acquire the heart of flame, it's simple. When you have 250 essences, and the staff in your bag just to be sure. Ragnaros immediatly enters the phase in which you are given the debuff Rage of Ragnaros when you damage him. Just kill him and the heart of flame will spawn in the middle of the lava pool Ragnaros retreats into. Then go back to Stormwind to hand in the quest.

Just want to provide some things I've observed.
-If you gets your cinders then leave and come back to collect essences you won't be able to siphon them off bosses you've already killed. I killed Shannox, Beth, and Rhyolith then left to finish the quest and grab the next one and when I returned I was unable to siphon them.

-You don't need to have the weapon equipped when you kill the boss but you do need it equipped to siphon from the boss. The way I will be doing it going forward is clearing the raid then running around and siphoning when I'm done. You don't have to do it this way but when you swap the weapon it goes on a 30s CD and I'd rather not wait after each kill.

As others have correctly pointed out, you can only siphon bosses that have been killed with the quest active. Blizzard was even so kind to leave a visual indicator on the corpse in the form of the Smouldering debuff, that is only applied to a corpse of a Firelands boss if that is the case.

This serves a number of purposes from the POV of the quest design. First it restricts siphoning only bosses that have been killed with the quest active. It also prevents more than one player from siphoning a boss since the debuff will be removed upon siphoning. Finally it was an easy way to ensure you can never siphon Heroic Ragnaros since his corpse will simply not get this debuff, ever.

As of the pre-launch event, I completed the quest after I did the broken isle scenario, and I'm now unable to turn in, untill the pre-launch event finishes (I would guess so). If anyone know any work around getting through the doors, I would highly appreciate it, so I do not have to wait untill Legion launches to get my legendary staff :^)

It appears you can now kill him so fast that the heart doesn't drop. A shadow word pain and artifact ability on my disc priest was enough to kill him.

A previous comment By Wolfenstein3000 suggested that you could open a ticket if you lost the quest during a Faction Change but in doing this I was unsuccessful actually.

NOTE: The immediate soluution if this is the case for you as well is to simply go to Kalecgos in Coldarra in Borean Tundra.

When a Faction Change takes place any quests which are active and in progress are abandoned upon starting the service. All quest items are also destroyed during this time. I’m afraid this is a limitation with the Faction Change system, more information on this can be located on this article: https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/22231

Normally, Customer Support is extremely hands off when it comes to quests lost due to Faction Changes because that is a limitation with the system. However, when it comes to this quest specifically we can in some cases help. I looked at the Character prior to the Faction Change but I’m afraid there is no record of the quest Heart of Flame being picked up by the character =\ We aren’t seeing it abandoned or in progress.

I’m afraid this means that to progress further with Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa’s Rest the character is going to need to pick up Heart of Flame and progress from the start.

I hope that this information helps provide some insight and I wish you luck going forward Jacob.

In submitting this ticket as well I have 3 things I thought would justify the end means being that I have these items from the previous quests in my inventory:
1. Runestaff of Nordrassil
2. Seething Cinder
3. Eternal Ember

And even while that was the case and mentioned in my ticket submission it was not able to help me after a faction change and losing the quest.

I completed this tonight. I sandbagged forever, waiting for him to cast the Rage of Ragnaros debuff, but it never came. I ended up killing him and was still able to loot the heart.

To clarify, this is NOT dropped from Rag. It is under him when he dies, you click the floaty ball of fire, and it loots to your inventory. It's small, and if you kill him fast, hard to see. Keep looking!

I've done this quest on various toons along the way. One was when it was current content, the rest during different subsequent xpacs.

What I noticed as of today; previously there was an issue that having got the 250 essences completed in a run meant the heart didn't drop during that same run. There was an extra week's wait to get it finished. That no longer occurs, apparently.

Today I got my last essences, and just to be sure I ran outside and re-logged. I hadn't done the bridge cut-scene before I left (right after killing Baleroc), so I was surprised to see that I could still use the portal near the entrance to take me right to Domo's area. However, there is no bridge. There is just a cavernous drop, which was quite interesting to see.

My 50 cents from the point of view doing this in legion (110):
- you don't have to have epic quest weapon equipped, you can reequip it after the kill (and wait 30sec), or equip it before pulling and then slowly kill boss due to massive loss from artifact weapon
- to get essences you have to have boss' corpse selected (it needs 'smouldering' debuff) and be sort of near (without boss selected upon using it says 'you can't do yet/right now)
- all bosses except raggy drop them, so if you don't need rag for anything else you can leave after majordomo or sell your ID to people who CBA to farm

It is worth noting that with the changes to Firelands in 8.2.5, you are now able to run it on both normal and heroic each week. I can confirm I received Smouldering Essences from both versions in one week.

You are able to obtain the embers on both Heroic and Normal mode Firelands.

This means that post-patch, you are able to go in twice a week for embers, making it faster to obtain this. I strongly recommend doing so!

I don't know if poeple know this or not, but you don't need to be able to loot the boss to be able to drain essences. Thus, with other people's help to reset Firelands, it's possible to do the essence requirement within a single week!

EDIT: Preemptive clarification: By "don't need to be able to loot the boss" I mean being ineligible to loot them by having already killed them on this week.

You can do this in one week if you have more ALTS which are 80lvl+ and can enter Firelands. (this is good if you have no friends :( )

Reason is that you don't need to loot bosses, you just need to use staff to siphon the essence from the corpses.

For example, I did this on my Druid (character on which I'm doing this quest), cleared all bosses on normal and heroic except Ragnaros as he is dropping the Heart of Flame
YOU CAN LOOT IT FROM RAGNAROS IT ONLY IF YOU HAVE ALL 250 ESSENCES

How to do this quest in one week?:

Clear all bosses except Ragnaros on normal and heroic difficulty on the char where you have the quest for legendary staff
Now, you are saved so you need other lockout where bosses are alive, log in, your ALT and create group in dungeon finder, for example in the custom section
Exit game or logout and log back into the char with legendary quest, go to dungeon finder and join the group you created with ALT, then log out or exit game
Login to your ALT and accept your character application in dungeon finder, logout and log back in the char with quest
Accept the invite from your ALT and again log out and log back in to your ALT, then enter the dungeon on your ALT and log out or exit game.
Last login to your char with a quest (in my case it was Druid) and enter the dungeon, all bosses are alive and you can kill them and siphon the corpses
After you cleared all bosses, leave the raid on the char with quest do the same with another ALT

Normal mode gave me around 32 essences where heroic gave me 57.

I completed this at 120 with a mage geared mostly with BoA's during (almost) a single raid lockout period.

(Note: you can't obtain the Essences from bosses you killed prior to picking up this quest. That is, I finished the step prior, ported to Northrend, completed the quest, ported back to Org/Hyjal, then re-entered FL and 2 boss corpses were still there but didn't have the buff that would allow me to siphon essences.)

The only boss that was left after finishing the previous stage was H Majordomo Staghelm. Killed, equipped staff, drained, got 9 Essences. Next day was lockout reset, ran N & H, then ran H by using the (Heroic only) lockouts from 5 of my other 120 alts since you don't need to loot the corpses (even Rag for the Heart) to complete the quest. (6 N boss siphons, 28 H boss siphons, 7.3 essences/boss - I didn't need all the bosses the last run.)

Easiest way, for me, was this. On your questing toon go to FL. Logout. Get on another FL raid-eligible alt. Set raid difficulty to Heroic. Create a custom group (note: all my alts are in the same guild so I used a Private group). Logout. Login with quest toon. Request to join the group. Logout. Login on the Group Leader, accept the request from the LFG interface panel. Logout. Login on quest toon, accept invite. I had my quest toon's raid difficulty set to N and I knew it was working correctly when I would see the raid entrance change to the H skull graphic. Enter the raid. After a few minutes you'll see a popup promoting you to Lead and asking if you want to keep the group listed, I just de-listed the group. Clear the 6 raid bosses that give essences. Rinse and repeat with other alts.

I hit 250/250 on Shannox, cleared the rest of the bosses before Rag, then cleared Rag - same run as getting to 250/250. I didn't have the staff equipped at any point in time during the Rag "fight". I did have to wait for his corpse to despawn to "loot" the heart. I could see part of the animation but wasn't able to target it/click on it until that happened.

After all that I finally had what I wanted...the Lil' Tarecgosa pet. As a plus I also ended up Exalted with AofH and got the fire chicken ground mount off of Alysrazor.

Another way of doing this fast:

Do both normal and HC versions, get your essences.
Get out of dungeon and politely ask ppl who are outside and want to in,
if they are not saved they can invite you, when bosses get killed u dont get loot, but u can use staff for their essence

Just wanted to post here how many Smoldering Essences I got as of Pre Patch for Shadowlands 27th October 2020.

Today was my first day to start this quest. I am a lvl 50 Druid and I went alone. I did Heroic 25 (which changes to Heroic 10 once I enter) and I just kept the staff equipped the whole time since it wasn't affecting my dps at all. I ended up getting 52 Essences in that one.

I then went into 25 man Normal (which turns into 10 man Normal once I got inside) I kept the staff equipped and i ended up getting 32 Essences.

Total of 84, so not bad for one day, If it continues like this, looks like i will get it done in 2 more

-As of today, October 28, I am using peppan92’s advice and that’s how I was able to do them both again today.

I came out with a total of 94 Essences from heroic 25 man and normal 25 man totaling 178 Essences.

-Ran 25 man heroic again and came out with 53 Essences, totaling 231 Esscences. Ran 25 man normal and was able to collect 250 and get the heart from the last Heroic boss!

I did have trouble trying to get the heart, just comes off heroic, and since I left Rag alive in the previous one, I went back in to him and killed him. I tried to siphon, but apparently there is no need to, there is a clickable ball of fire when his body disappears, or you can go looking for it under his body. I forgot my bags were full and it despawned on me, but I seen a letter on my map and sure enough it was the heart! So I was able to get this done thanks to all the posts on here making things so easy, thanks everyone, be safe and stay healthy :)

Followed Pepan92's guide, and figured somethings out.

You don't need to swap to multiple alts to do this, and you don't need your alt to be in the instance. I used my Death Knight to start my group when he was in Dalaran (Legion), and I just spammed heroic. I killed up to Majordomo on my Druid (who has the quest) despite having fully cleared on my Druid that week. To reset, I ran out of the instance, logged back onto my Death Knight and waited until he was automatically passed group lead, and then simply reset instance, then logged back over. I was able to grind the quest out in about 5 hours.

As sleazychicken stated in post, works like a charm in 9.2.7. Use your alt to create group/list your group /join with alt and log out and accept it etc . Log back on the toon needing smouldering essences. kill up to majordomo, run out , log back to toon in grp, wait till it passes lead and reset.keep going till you have all 250 then kill Rag.

"OH! Wait! WAAAAIT! And 250 essences! Yeah...that's right. That's why I said you need to remember to use the staff on boss corpses. I need 250 essences. Okay? Thats one heart of flame, and 250 essences."

There ya go Blizz, I fixed it for ya. God I would've hated to have done this when this was live and relevant content lol.

It bears repeating that the Heart of Flame does NOT "drop" from Ragnaros, but rather appears as a flaming ball of fire in his corpse when he dies. You need to click it to create the Heart of Flame, and it ONLY appears after you get the 250 essences. On heroic, Rag's body usually dissipates or bugs or disappears or whatever after you loot him and it's pretty easy to see, but just look for it on his corpse otherwise.

so as of a while ago you can now run both heroic and normal on the same lockout. I just did a run and got 30 from normal and 53 from heroic. should take 3 weeks, hopefully.

You can run this on normal and heroic for each reset as mentioned. You can also go into someone else's raid ID and still get the essences. The essences are obtained by using the staff on the body of one of the dead bosses. You can only get loot once on heroic and normal but even if you can't get loot from a boss using the staff on that boss still gives you essences. Leave Ragnaros up until you have all the essences because the heart wont appear until you have all of them. You can't get essences from him either. The heart appears as a clickable item after you loot Ragnaros. Good luck!

You can complete this in around an hour if you have an alt available to go into a fresh lockout. Create a group in the custom group finder on your alt, Alt+F4 and relaunch into the character you have the quest on. Sign up to the group, Alt+F4 and invite yourself from your alt. Alt+F4 and accept on your main to get into the group, zone in and the instance is the same as your alt's lockout. This can be repeated with the same character, you do not need multiple high level alts for this. You DO NOT need to drain Rag, as he does not drop the essences, he only gives the heart once you're at 250 essences.

Many thanks to all the commenters below about using an ALT to get this done quickly. I have rarely used the group finder tool for stuff like this and it honestly would not have occurred to me on my own. In this case it was really easy and worked like a charm. I was able to get this done in just an hour or two and finished the questline today. Thank goodness for Wowhead and the great community who share stuff like this.

Here's how you finish this quest in one week if you do have a cutie friend:
1. Ask your friend to invite you into his/her group, ask him/her to set raid difficulty at HEROIC, then to reset all instances.
2. You enter Fireland.
3. Ask him/her to disband this group. (Note: You shouldn't leave the group on your own, or you will be teleported out of the raid.)
4. Siphon all bosses except Ragnaros by using the Runestaff of Nordrassil you previously received and equipped. (Don't really know if you must equip it)
5. Leave raid. There's a Circle of Thorns Portal on the other side of the bridge behind Baleroc, which can teleport you to the entrance of the raid.
6. Praise your cutie friend and do 1-5 again. Each run will give around 60 Smouldering Essences on Heroic, 40 on Normal.
