You need to use the quest item provided on the Canyon Ettin that roam around Redridge Canyons. Check mob page for map over patrol path.

Good news for beta testers is that there is a 10 minute duration on the Subdued Canyon Ettin but it's not zone bound, meaning you can take him along for a walk where ever you like and he helps out in combat too (40-70dmg swing)!

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but every time I go to use the Ettin Control Orb, it gets interrupted instantly and then I have to kill the Ettin and find another one. I've tried to subdue probably 10 of them now. What could I possibly be doing wrong?

So I turned off my addons and that made the item work. It's beyond me why, or which addon broke it, but there it is anyway.

Unfortunately, the pet Ettin is now restricted to the greater area of Red Ridge folks. He just fades, regardless of time, when you try to walk him out of the area. =(

I was having problems completing this quest too.Everytime I clicked on the control orb,nothing would happen and he would continue to beat my head in.It wasnt until I began fighting him and then clicked on it,when it finally worked.

Was having more issues with the gnolls that were chain spawning around me! lol.

use the provided orb on one of the elite ettins. go to 31,43 with the ettin, then use the orb again.

31, 43 is at the end of the bridge on the lakeshire side

Subdued Ettins will assist you if you enter combat! You can reuse the orb on as many Ettins as you want. If you don't turn the quest in you can have a lvl 18 elite pet as long as you're in redridge helping you kill things :D

I too was unable to use the orb to subdue the ettin until I dismissed my pet (warlock voidwalker). Then when it was fighting me instead of voidwalker, clicking the orb did work.

Leveling on my mage -- same problem of not being able to use the orb while my elemental was out. I made the mistake of resummoning my elemental which allowed me to have both out. However after the Ettin picked the rock up and tossed it into the lake -- no credit for saving Oslow.

Redid the quest without having my elemental out and it worked fine.

Could be a fluke but it could also be a bug.

I don't know if it is bugged for every other class, but Warlocks can still have their summoned demon and a subdued ettin out at the same time. As of this post time and date, I am currently doing it.

Apparently even if your char is female, the ettin still calls you Daddy. Half-glad, though, because I think if he yelled, "Bye Bye, Mommy!" I'd start sobbing. They grow up so fast :'(

Bugged?

I tried this several times today, and was unable to complete it. Rogue, so no pets. The Ettin would tame normally, but either disappear on the way to the boulder, or right after he picked it up. Either way, no credit for quest completion.

ok i just completed this one today on my shammy lvl 85 and yes i did run into the bug problem just mention aboved. but i think i found the problem and solution.

the problem is a timer bug, even though their was a timer on this i never saw a buff/debuff for it

the soultion: use an attack that will do little to no damage (for shamnys its wind shear) and kite it all the way down to the bridge than use the orbs as instructed in the quest text to control it. then since you only have to take a few steps to the bridge follow the instustion that popped up. now i kept hitting the orb after its cooldown..i don't know if it helped the situation or not but better safe than sorry.

you may need help to clear out trash if your lvl appropriate for the zone and i am not abonding the quest again to try my theory out.. i hope this helps

update five min later: ok their was a bug when i tried to turn in the quest. it would not let me click the reward i wanted but a simple log out log in fixed the matter.

Agreed with the kiting.

From a GM: "So the work around is as follows. Once you have the quest, go find an ettin and use a low damage attack to kite it down towards the bridge, then use the orb."

Basically, wait for it to pass as close to the road as possible, then kite it to just below the graveyard. Then use the orb.

At this time, the quest is bugged. It appears that the duration of "Control Ettin" has been reduced to one minute instead of ten. Which makes it difficult to have the rock removed from Oslow, and have the Ettin go through his mercilessly slow dialogue before he finally throws it into the water. Trying to shorten the distance, between the Ettin and Oslow, before I controlled him, I FINALLY was able to do this quest...but only just barely. He had barely thrown the rock off the dock (which MUST happen before the quest updates), and he vanished before saying his usual "Bye-bye, Daddy!" and running off.

You have to clear everything, because if anything attacks you, the Ettin will waste time fighting for you. Then you have to lure the Ettin as close as you can before possessing him, then book all the way to Oslow...and don't waste time anywhere.

I did report this bug to the Reps, so I think it will be fixed soon.

A funny thing happened the first time I tried to clear everything and lure the Ettin. As I was pulling it close to possess it, the creature just died. I don't mean it disappeared. I mean it dropped dead and its corpse was laying there, and I couldn't loot it. I pulled it with Shadow Word: Pain to make it chase me, which it did, but then it died.

The Rep asked me if Shadow Word: Pain killed it, and I said, "At my level , my intellect, killing a creature that powerful with Shadow Word: Pain? NOT BLOODY LIKELY!"

As I explained to the rep, the only thing I can think of is that some more powerful toon happened by, saw the Ettin chasing me, and thinking I was in danger, they decided to "do me a favor" and kill the Ettin for me.

I'm on a level 19 worgen hunter. Kiting the ettin is not working, he keeps resetting. I managed to get him down to the bridge, throw the rock in the water and Oslow popped up...but no credit. I've tried this stupid quest 4 times since with no luck.

yay im not the only one with this issue... im working on my Lore of eastern Kingdom and was wondering why the hell the quest didnt work, first time i used the quest item to possed him right away then i came here to read what im doing wrong, then seen some of you suggest to kite him near the road, is any 1 other then me having an issue kitting him to road? he nearly takes like 5 steps to be after being kitted then runs back the other way stated Evade >.>

"ya, we have a few reports about it. We are just waiting for Quality Assurance to investigate the issue, and see whats going on with it."

Yes, it's bugged right now. Yes, it's a timer issue. No, you do NOT have a whole minute. I think it's more like 30 seconds. Once you know that, it's easy. Just clear a couple Gnolls, wait for the Ettin to get relatively close, kite him to the boulder, use the orb, then you're good to go. Follow him to the pier for good measure. I am not sure if that makes a difference, but I did follow him the one time he threw the boulder when it worked.

yeah this quest is bugged i even dropped it and reclaimed it back went back to the orb in the caverns., did what you're supposed to do and still no credit after he throws the rock. Oslow just stands up. Spoke to a GM and all he said was thanks for adding and providing this information to us, pretty much not doing anything there. If this has been going on they should have worked out the bug already.

I seemed to be having the same problems as stated above. What worked for me was the following:

1) Check the patrol route of the Ettin and determine the corner closest to the rock you want him to lift.
2) Make sure to clear all the gnolls around that area so they cannot disrupt you while playing with your Ettin
3) Subdue the Ettin and run towards the rock, if you have any speed boosts you can use them however he might still be a bit slower.
4) When you get to the rock, use the item provided again for the Ettin to lift the rock.
5) Follow the Etting as he goes on to throwing the rock into the water.

I cannot verify it but I think step 5 might also be important as there's some phasing involved.

So. I tried this about.. seven or eight times. And I almost had it about four or five times. Inevitably, the Ettin would begin to throw the rock and fade out, the rock would land on the dock or the bridge like a ghost threw it. Like a girl. Badly.

Never did I see any text from any NPCs, either the ettin or the bridge workers.

I'm now standing at the bridge and I cannot see any Ettins, yet clearly someone has one because it's going through the script text over and over.

This is my ninth 85. I'm not really all that proud of that, because that's a lot of time spent playing WoW, but what can I say, I get very obsessive. This quest's sheer stupidity right now is possibly one of the dumbest, most careless ones I've seen in a long time. I'm running a priest, level 18 right now, I don't HAVE a way to kite the ettin. I can wand it, but after four shots and about 1/3 the way to the bridge, he just resets.

Shadow Word: Pain is the same way, by the middle of the second dot, he resets.

Blizz has how many people and can't, say, excise a quest until one of the developers removes their thumb from their ass, and adds a ZERO back to the duration of the effect?

Having the 1-20 quests actually work closely to flawlessly should be Blizz's primary concern with their announced 300,000 account cancellations and modification of their trial accounts to unlimited length through level 20.

Sheesh this quest finally worked for me xD

heres a Dk Point of view,

*note* theres a ettin near the road at 34.53, 35.71
dont kite the ettin at the one at redridge Canyons

Ive tried and he runs away like after a min or so

Taunt or death grip the Ettin near the road when at 34.53, 35.71

once you get the aggro ( if higher level) take off autto attack,
Kite walking backwards
kite the ettin near the boulder.

dont use quest item until your pass the grave yard,
use the quest item at 31.69, 43.55
then once you use the quest item Ettin will say,
"rock not so heavy! Puny humies!
"where throw? throw on bridge?
Click the Quest item once again when he says that so he WONT throw on bridge, or he will if you dont click the item

Ettin should now be walking to the doc and say
" OK! me throw in water!"
Once he yells, " Bye bye daddy!" quest complete and you should get credit Good Luck! :)

kiting wasn't working for me, he would abandon attack and leave if i passed a certain point. i cleared path, got him as far as i could, used orb, mounted, and hauled ass to rock. barely made it...on the 8th try >.<

I was having the problem with the Ettin disappearing after he lifted the boulder, so I lured him as far south as I could then subdued him. Then I mounted and hurried to the boulder and clicked on the orb. Then I kept clicking on the orb every time it was done with it's cool down. I got credit after he threw the boulder.

The trick is to aggro the giant so that it chases you, then use the control orb when it stops to bash the ground. Don't stand under the club! You can only use the orb when the giant stops and is standing still ready to use the club. It won't work when the giant is newly aggro'd or chasing you, only when he stops to use the club.

Best part? Look carefully at the boulder as the etin is going to the dock to throw it in the water - the foreman's legs are still sticking out of it.

Go to the place marked for the quest. Pull and subdue an Ettin. Follow the path to the North side of the bridge and use the orb once more. If you're losing your Ettin, you're going the wrong way!

What am I doing wrong? I have read all the comments here. I'm a L17 Mage. I am trying to get the ettin as close to the road as possible, I attack him with my little firebolt spell. Its the lowest level spell I have equipped and then I run towards the bridge. He chased me for about a second, I tried the stupid orb thing and it was a fail. I've done this too often to be fun anymore. I am torn between wanting to defeat the quest and letting the foreman die under the rock! Gah!

Ok so apparently posting frustrated comments is the key to this quest because I just posted 10 minutes ago and have since beaten the ettin.

Here's what I did. I waited on top of the mountain ridge closest to the cemetery. While I was waiting for the ettin to come around the corner I killed some of the gnolls. Then when the ttin was as close as he was going to get before turning back around I hit him with my lowest level spell. (L17 mage, so firebolt or even frostbolt work). Then instead of running, I walked backwards off the mountain. I found it easier to keep an eye on the ettin. I did get hit, but by knowing where he was I could make sure he didn't run away back toward the mountain again.

When I got back to the road I kept going backward, kept my mouse hovered over the orb and waited for the log strike (its when he hits his log on the ground, there is a little countdown thing just under the ettin character icon). and then I orbed him. Then run towards the bridge. Keep an eye on the orb because you may have to click it once or twice more to keep control. But I didn't have a time issue or anything. It just took me a thousand and one tries to get it right. Hope this helps!

I couldn't get my orb to work, even after trying all the workarounds suggested here. Luckily, I saw someone else on the same quest use the orb successfully, so I joined their group and was able to complete the quest with their help.

After accpting this quest, you should have in your bags Ettin Control Orb.
Go to the location marked in your map, find a Canyon Ettin and use it on him.
It will become friendly as Subdued Canyon Ettin.

Then, go near the bridge, around 31,5,44.5. Canyon Ettin will follow you.
You will see Foreman Oslow under a rock.
Use the Ettin Control Orb again on your Subdued Canyon Ettin.
He will remove the rock and throw it into the water, and the quest will be completed!

I can control all the Ettins in Redridge and my first thought is to use them to move a rock.
My character is not much of a big picture thinker.

Just tried this. Blizz has not fixed the bug as of this date. The orb does nothing. I have been playing WoW for well over seven years, and have controlled many NPCs. All of the control devices worked with the same mechanic. This does not work. There are a dozen workarounds in the posting here, which proves that this is bugged. I tried two of them and I am giving up. I can level this alt without this quest.

Probably due to the recent stat squish, but a quest that you will receive later on (Showdown at Stonewatch) is a bit overtuned and was destroying me and my NPC buddies. I had avoided completing this Saving Foreman Oslow quest so I could use the Etin to help me in Redridge if I needed, and he certainly proved helpful for finishing Showdown at Stonewatch. I recommend holding off on turning this one in right away, at least for now!

For those having issues with the Ettin Control Orb not working:

DON'T use it from the objectives window. Move it to your action bar and use the keybind or click it from there. When used from the objectives window, all it will do is pull the Canyon Ettin and you'll probably die. However, when used from your action bar, it will cause you to cast the subdue required to control the Ettin, allowing you to perform the quests required actions.

As of 2 weeks ago, this quest seems bugged. I've so far leveled 3 characters to lvl 90..and every character could not finish this quest. I believe it started when Blizzard activated the Rep gain bonus.

When I use the Orb on the Ettin, and then go to Foreman, the Bridge Workers is trying to lift... nothing as you see Foreman laying there on the ground.. dead. There is no rock.

Like others have stated, you may have to use the orb manually from your bags or actionbar, as the quest tracker button for the orb didn't work for me. Additionally, I just accidentally found out that you may be able to use the orb on ANOTHER ettin after you have one subdued, to make it "lift the boulder". What this means is that up in the mountain where the foreman is nowhere near, my ettin did a little leap while I was engaged with a hostile ettin, and then I got credit for saving the foreman. Yeah, no idea. Bugged quest is bugged

Since the rock wasn't there for my quest, I had to find a work around. The work around to this quest was mind controlling the Canyon Ettin then letting another Canyon Ettin spawn, using the orb on that second Canyon Ettin will give you credit for lifting the rock.

I just completed this today and had a hard time getting the control orb to work... I tried three times on the first ettin, using the orb in my bag and bars - neither made a difference. I ended up killing him and letting another ettin spawn - and to my surprise it worked on the second ettin! I was able to jump down the cliffs with him (he stayed following me) and walked back to the bridge. The boulder spawned and I was able to use the orb again just like I should have.

The boulder also respawned at the bridge within about 60 seconds of me completing the quest.
