Right now, it's kind of impossible to complete this quest on lvl 80.

I should have come here first.

I tried manually luring them across the river, but as soon as I broke combat, the stupid bird just re-swam the river back were they were in the first place.

Stupid, stupid bird creatures...

My advice for all Level 80s - Go get some low-end ranged weapons if you want to do some of these beginning quests. It just takes up one spot (since there's no ammo anymore), and you can keep it around for 'beatdown' quests.

Go bear and on birds use FFF aka Faerie Fire (Feral). Repeat x3.

Did this as a 85 orc enh shaman. All i had to do was strip everything off and just use regular attacks. Two hits apiece and they ran just fine.

Quests like this one are why you might keep a few bank slots open for old non-scaling damage doodads, a la Faintly Glowing Skull.

I also just in general recommend having an Equipment Set saved that is totally bare--just a 1-button dump of all your gear into inventory. It's a thing you set up once, then you can easily shed 10K DPS in a hurry for finicky low-level quests like this one. It's also useful for certain kinds of damage testing. And parties.

One way I found to do it at level 85 is to hit it with an Argent Tournament lance with absolutely no strength buffs on my gear. It hits for exactly 123 damage on my paladin, which is just enough to send it over without killing it.

Punches hit for less, but the fact that they hit for 82 damage means that you can't get the strider below 25% hp without killing him, since you would have to hit him twice.

Everybody's talking about how to do this quest at high levels but nobody mentioned the reason why it's complicated...

You have to injure the Striders without one-shotting them. Bring their health down to a certain percent and they'll run off. Personally I recommend stripping off gear that increases your damage and attacking unarmed.

I'm still unsure how to do this quest, I am a Night Elf Warlock... I have stripped down and made my minion passive, which means he wont attack unless I say, and I have used the manual attacks but it's still not working at lvl 25 :(

Level 85 Death Knight here.

No matter what you have to be naked. All I had on was a tabard. Still, I found that punching resulted in one hit not being enough, two hits being too much.

However, there is a solution! As Frost spec, just pop Pillar of Frost! One hit and they're running. Not enough to kill them but enough to get them below the quest threshold.

As a level 85 rogue i had to get a 4-7 dmg offhand and equipp mining axe as well as get resurection sickness, then it was easy though. =) With no offhand equipped i just killed the bird each try...

I was having a lot of trouble with my lvl 85 Paladin. So here's my fancy trick:

1. Kill yourself (I just fatigued in the nearby ocean)

2. Release your spirit and take the res damage (making your
attacks 75% reduced)

3.Get fully naked and don't buff

4. Punch the birds in the face

I hope this helps people out :)

If you're Forsaken and high-level, you're going to have to get res sickness and hope you can strike the right balance before your Touch of the Grave kicks in. A low-level finally helped me (thanks dude!) scare them off before I thought about res sickness. Tried it - even after res sickness at 85, TotG will still kill it. Got naked, hit it with a couple of ice lances, and I manged to get it to run before my racial went off.

This talk about how to do this quest at level 85 is suddenly relevant. With the crazy nerfs blizz put in with 5.0 I am 1 shoting them at lvl 10. Had to fight them no weapon to do the quest. Thanks for the advice.

done, just naked and use a Rusty Hatchet (http://www.wowhead.com/item=1416#news) and hit 2 times to Birds and run away, over the river. easy (hunter 90) note: no pet !

As a lvl 90 DK I had to remove my gear, and then run quickly through them when attacking so that I would not be able to hit them again. Worked for me.

Easily the most-frustrating of the "hurt, don't kill" quests.

At 100, you can't achieve this through brute force. Even naked, with rez sickness and wielding a smith hammer, I was still hitting for 11 times the strider's max health.

If you're fortunate enough to have a mind control of some sort, you can still do this trivially, though. Some tips:

1. If you're a warlock, there are several at-level demons in the zone (Swollen Voidwalker is nearby and level 10); Priests have dozens of humanoids to choose from (the piggies at the south end of this quest area are close and about the right level) and Death Knights have Mutated Venture Co. Drone in Northern Barrens. (They're level 22, but they typically kill the striders in 3 hits ... so you'll have to fight extra if your zombie crits.) I didn't try it, but engineers also have the Mind Amplification Dish addon ... might work. Might not. 10-minute cooldown seems terrible, though. Remember: Set your pet to passive, Ctl+1 will send it attacking, Ctl+2 will make it retreat.
2. When using pets, you must tag the striders to get credit. Find an ability that doesn't damage and use it. (I found Death Grip worked on my DK.)
3. Dynamite seems like a logical thing to try, but it doesn't work. Dynamite doesn't scale with your gear, but it scales with something – at level 100, I was blasting level-40 baddies off the face of the earth with Rough Dynamite, doing the same damage naked and clothed.

This quest can still be extremely frustrating even if you are doing it at the appropriate level especially if you use heirlooms. For casters it's a bit easier since most have some sort of dot they can put on the striders which will usually run away before they die. For everyone else, taking off my weapon and punching them worked otherwise I would 1 shot them 90% of the time with one auto attack.

I could not complete this quest at level 100 but I found a pretty simple way just recently. I just waited by the quest giver until someone came to do the quest. I gave them some gold and then just grouped up with them to get it done.

For those doing Darkspear rep it should be noted that you have to have the quest Watershed Patrol in order for Zen'Taji to give you this quest. It's not listed in the Darkspear rep quest chain because Watershed Patrol doesn't give Darkspear rep but without it you can't start this quest.

As a level 81 rogue even my naked punch overkilled these chicks.

I had to deposit all my gear in the bank, except a low-level weapon.

Sky-dived from my flying mount to death, and resurrected with Resurrection sickness, which weakened Throw sufficiently to gain aggro. But auto attack must be toggled off, so that Gouge (with the lousy weapon) can be initiated to run a safe distance to commence another Throw to get the bird fleeing.

I remember struggling to do this on my Orc Unholy DK back when he was lvl 55. At that time, I had to strip naked, then use Chains of ice, and wait for weak disease hit. It took a lot of time and patience, but I did manage it eventually.

Now I'm on another realm, with a lvl 86 DK and sat there wondering how the Hell I'd accomplish this damned quest without resorting to killing myself.

Naked didn't work. low damage skills still one-hit the little fellas no matter how under-equipped I set my char. I wracked my brains, How could I do a set amount of damage low enough to not kill them?

I thought about all my characters, and what items and abilities they had, and then it hit me- what about professions? Naturally rough dynamite comes to mind, since it's the first you get that's pretty weak, and if you don't mind dumping a profession, or if you don't have one, pick up engineering long enough just to make yourself some of these to finish the quest with.

But yeah. My DK already had professions both around 400 or so, and deleting either of them for this one quest was out of the question. But then it hit me. Something I'd picked up plans for a number of times, and evens had the ability to create on one or two of my other characters.

What about Ez-Thro Dynamite? That stuff doesn't require the profession to use it, after all.

So yeah. There you go. Easy way of solving all these "damage it but don't kill it" quests for high level chars WITHOUT having to resort to killing yourself. So all you engineers out there, start putting a few sticks on the AH

This doesn't work, since apparently the dynamite damage scales up with your character, despite the item description still saying it does a low amount of damage. Another item broken since WoD.

However, I did find another way of doing this quest without dying. It was such an easy fix, that it never occurred to me until i thought about controlling undead, but couldn't find any nearby. It also occurred to me that the undead might scale up too, so it wasn't worth looking too far for one.

But the idea of a "minion" stuck, and then it hit me. Why don't I just invite some noob char to do it for me? Sure enough, even though the lvl 1 nub hunter wasn't on the quest, the birds still ran off at low health, and I was credited as part of the party.

Well, looks like the old addage is still true: the simplest ideas are often the best solution.

Just a thought, but has anyone tried using the Red Rider Rifle for this quest? At lvl 100 with insane gear, it still only does 5 damage to a critter, so I wondered if that would trigger the quest.

Here's how to do it on a Level 100 WITHOUT DYING DEBUFF!:
1. Get some Savage Snowball
2. Throw them on the Enemies (Deals around 25-32 Damage with my 716 Hunter)
3. ?
4. Profit.

Note: If you have a Item Equipped like Infallible Tracking Charm which deals extra Damage just unequipp it or you will kill it :)

Edit: Sadly they fixed Savage Snowball and you only can use it on other players :c

Managed to do this quest on a lvl 70 dk by stripping down, getting the res sickness and using chains of ice, which adds a dot to the birds, getting them down to about 3 health, which is enough for them run away.

I was able to complete this quest at level 100 by removing all my gear and putting it in the bank, getting rez sickness, and using Oil of Immolation. I used it and just stood next to them. It bugged a little after I used one oil in the fact that it wouldn't let me use another until I exited the game and logged back in, but it worked.

Looks like Blizz added an item for just this purpose. Soft Foam Sword. Can be purchased for the Toy Vendor in Orgrimmar.

No dying, no rez sickness, no stripping off gear. It just worked.

Here's another thing you can do if you're a higher level trying to do this. If you have access to a second computer, simply create a free starter account and log in on that computer. Have your high level toon invite your starter account one to a group. Bring them to the quest area. Have your lowbie attack the mobs for you. Done. It also helps if your high level toon has a taunt ability to keep the lowbie from dying.

Has anyone tried doing this in 2020 at level 120? I'm finding it impossible. I've tried getting naked, foam sword, and fishing pole...I just kill the damn things every time.

Did this on lvl 16 Orc frost mage. Put my water elemental on passive, and only used Ice Lance on the Plainstriders for it only does 19 damage at lvl 16. Six or seven shots made them run away.

I'm on version 9.0.1, level 37.
The only thing that helped me is equipping a 1-3 bow and use "Bursting Shot" once or twice.

Before that
- I've tried using "Soft Foam Sword" which doesn't work at all, you can't use that on the target.
- I've tried the "Fishing Pole" someone has suggested, didn't help.
- I've tried removing the weapon and all armor and stuff (totally naked) and using a punch and it killed that damn thing.

Hope this will help someone in the future.

Can confirm that as of the time of this comment, the soft foam sword does work for this, even at ilvl 131. It takes them down to 10% health on first swing andthey flee right after.

Soft Foam Sword no longer works (invalid target), but Whole-Body Shrinka' works like a charm. No problem to find all three Wayward Plainstrider within the limited time window of the toy.
