Horde Death Knights receive this quest after completing The Battle For The Ebon Hold. The Alliance equivalent is Where Kings Walk.

When you walk through Ogrimmar, on your way to Thrall, you will be unfriendly with all the NPCs. When you pass them, they will say things to you like "Monster!" and "I lost my family to the Scourge!". They will also throw rotten food and spit at you. You gain 6000 Ogrimmar rep when you turn in this quest with Thrall.

A very interesting quest.

More aimly, here are all the quotations said by the Orgrimmar citizens and guards:

They trow to you rotten apples and rotten bananas, and also spit on you.

Thrall also disclaims a little speech when you end this quest:

Thrall yells: Horde, hear the call of you Warchief!
Thrall yells: Today marks the firsts of many defeats for the scourge! Death Knights, once in the service of the Lich King, have broken free of his grasp and formed a new alliance against his tyranny!
Thrall yells: You will welcome these former heroes of the Horde and treat them with the respect that you would give to any to any ally of Orgrimmar!
Thrall yells: For the Horde!

And to finish with the hilarous part this quest, when you aggro Gamon, he yells :

When you turned in the quest to thrall and you have to go to outlands, simpel use your http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=50977 and talk to the fp there :) then you can fly all the way to stonard.

While I'm not ruling out the possibility that it was just a glitch, I was able to summon my mount and ride through the city to Thrall after the most recent patch, so the silencing effect may have been removed.

If you mount before you go in Orgrimmar you can ride till you come Grommash Hold (the place Thrall is).

Make sure Thrall is alive and well before making a DK. A raid group just killed him so now I gotta wait until he respawns to turn in the quest and get rollin again.

Fastest way from Orgrimmar to Outlands after completing this quest seems to be to go into the Valley of Spirits in Org, go near the portal trainer Thuul and take the portal to Blasted Lands.

If Varian or Thrall are dead, go do some other quests and come back in a few hours. NPCs in other cities of your faction (other than Stormwind/Orgrimmar) will still be friendly to you. Theoretically you can even turn in this quest at level 80. The only major disadvantage is that you cannot reset your talents until this quest is done.

So if your faction leader is dead, don't fret and don't just stand stand around waiting impatiently. Just go level in Outland for a few hours until he respawns.

In case your new to being Horde your looking for Valley Of Wisdom=40.3,36.9 and then Thrall=31.6,37.8.

I'm level 80 and have not turned this quest in. They still throw things at me in Org. Here are the consequences:

1. You can't use the mailboxes, bank, AH, FP, in Org, or talk to any npc's that hate you.
2. You are silenced not just in Org, but in the whole of Durotar, so if you're in Org, you have to go elsewhere (quite a ways) if you need to cast Death Gate.
3. You're liked in every town but Org.
4. You have to fight your way to the runeforge, but that becomes easy very quickly. Don't aggro Patchwerk. DUH

Other than that, it's no big deal. I don't need to go to Org more than once every 30 minutes, normally, so I can just hearth to Dal and go wherever I want.

I've gotten a few lulz from it :)

Edit: If you reach 80 and need to level a weapon skill (like 2h maces for Titansteel Destroyer), the lev 57-60 elites at Acherus (assuming you haven't turned in this quest) are handy for that. They can barely even hit you. You can auto attack and just walk away for a few minutes, come back, and be close to 300. The Val'kyr have close to 30k hp, so it's easy to beat on them for a while without taking much damage, if any.

Also, put yourself in Frost Presence to prolong the agony for each mob. You'll get more hits in per mob and take even less damage.

I went to do this quest on my Death Knight today, and found an extremely amusing catch...

During Winter's Veil, you can walk into Orgrimmar on this quest and pick up your presents - I was able to shoot my pellet rifle at Orgrimmar NPCs, and my Mechanical Greench even defended me during these encounters.

Guards usually came and smacked me once for about 400-500, but then reset to their fruit throwing stage. I spent a few minutes pulling the Flight Master and the Auctioneers before I got bored and decided to finish the quest :P

to kill time you should go to these portals they will send you straight to the dark portal
Horde: Orgrimmar (Valley Of Spirts) look for a hut that`s double storied and then go to
the top and you should find a portal

Alliance: Stormwind (The Mage Quarter) Look for a tower then follow it when you reach the top you should see
a portal to the dark portal

Thought this was different, but after patch 4.0.1, the quest turn in goes to Garrosh Hellscream, who is standing next to Eitrigg and Vol'Jin. Thrall still is standing in front of the throne, but they are just talking about Thrall's future pilgrimage to Nagrand to consult the spirits and find some answers.

As a note, now with Cataclysm out, it is VERY possible to never turn this quest in and remain in an "angry" version of Orgrimmar. You are able to obtain hearthstones from various other-faction NPCs in Org (such as the Goblin Slums), mailboxes in these areas are accessible, and so are auctioneers.

Edit: Okay, I am now 85. However, I've had to turn the quest in. The Twilight Highlands pre-quests are NOT POSSIBLE AT ALL if you do not turn in this quest, as you need to interact with multiple NPCs inside Orgrimmar proper.
It is entirely possible to, at 85, still not turn in this quest, as long as you level with instances/battlegrounds/different questing zones. However, you will never be able to have the portal from Twilight Highlands to Orgrimmar, and back.
However it is possible to access the Dragonmaw quartermasters and do some of their quests (everything away from Dragonmaw Port, e.g. Blood Gulch and the cave near the Ogres is fine), so the only thing you forfeit is really not being able to talk to any Orgrimmar-faction NPC in Org.
Additionally, Gamon has been hotfixed so that he no longer spams his "SCOURGE! GAMON WILL SAVE YOU!" He does not interact with Deathknights who have not turned in this quest any more. :(

Edit2: Mograine will train you in Deathknight spells. You are also able to unlearn your talents and buy Dual Talent spec from him. You cannot buy the Ebon Gryphon; the Runeforges of Acherus are usable, but you'll have to dodge regular level 58 hostiles to get to them (combat avoidable easily by 70). Only NPCs inside Orgrimmar itself, with the faction Orgrimmar, will not speak to you; Taurens, trolls, goblins, etc. who are not part of the Orgrimmar faction will gladly talk to you (although they'll still throw stuff at you and yell).

Edit3: Final edit for now - some Twilight Highlands quests, like the ones in Blood Gulch, are still completable even though you can't do the pre-quests. Since there are now cooking and fishing dailies in other cities, you don't sacrifice too much any more from not turning the quest in.
~~And yes, it's possible to talk to the JP/VP vendors. I have not checked the Honor vendors yet, but those would presumably be usable also.~~

TL;DR - If you are a DK who hasn't turned in this quest, pros/cons:
~~-The Auction House, innkeepers, bank, VP/JP/Honor/Conq vendors are available (I used the Goblin Slums area).~~
- AS OF 4.3.3 the VP/JP vendors ARE ORGRIMMAR FACTION. You will NOT be able to buy any of this gear. However, since the Valor Point system is being changed in Mists (so that you can buy VP gear from Pandaria instead), not turning in this quest is still a viable option!
-You cannot interact with most Orcs INSIDE VALLEY OF HONOR. Any NPCs flagged with the Orgrimmar faction outside of Valley of Honor will still interact with you (e.g. lowbie quest zones).
-Runeforge is available, as is Mograine (DK Trainer)
-Portals to Cata zones are available with the exception of Twilight Highlands. The TH prequests cannot be completed, but Dragonmaw rep can still be attained. You can access the Dragonmaw quartermaster.
-You can still get reputation with Orgrimmar.
-You won't be able to do Cooking/Fishing dailies IN ORG (other cities' dailies are available) - don't know about JC.

Found it interesting that Tirion's letter and Garrosh both say "Blood and Honor." This is the name of the book by Chris Metzen about Eitrigg and Tirion.

I find it slightly ironic that Garrosh, who Blizzard wants to portray as a relentless and merciless warchief that would kill his own faction members, heartily allows a death knight to the horde because Tirion saved *one* orc.

So with the 7.0 patch and invasion going on, Saurfang is currently out fighting at the Crossroads, making this quest impossible to complete. I rode out there to try and talk to him, but he doesn't respond. Anyone have any ideas?

I was having problems turning in the quest Saurfang's Blessing in order to join the horde so I logged out, made my lunch, logged back in and Saurfang was standing in front of the Warchief's throne in Grommash Hold. So maybe you just have to log out and back in once you've gotten to your respective cities.

weird bug with timerunner death knights
They can sometimes come in unfriendly , and can't get the quest to become friendly with their capital city :( it made me do the entire death knight starting area on the timerunning dk
