This quest might look hard in the start. In fact it isn't.
The best tactic is zoom your camera all down and get an eagle view.
Go to the Bonfire. (Big fire) And click the torch. Now run after the shadow.
Be a little in front of it. When it's almost down, place yourself so it will hit you.
When you get the first torch, it will not be thrown as long up the air.

Took me a bit to figure out how to start this darn thing - but *cough* I tried to catch everyones torches flying around (like alot of others did too) - until I understood that I had to actually go up myself to the Bonfire - press my"Unlit Torches".

Just wanted to make it a bit clear - that you have to YOURSELF - go to the bonfire and use your own "Unlit Torches" and chase those ;)

As a Horde character, I found it easier to catch my torches in Thunderbluff, mostly because there are less people there and I can clearly see the shadows on the floor, in Orgrimmar I had difficulty seeing the shadows because they kept disapearing.

Remember that it's the same torch that you throw up in air that you have to catch 4 times.

Light a torch -> catch it when it comes down -> catch it 3 mores times (you automatically throws it back in the air, when you catchs it.

I followed each and every suggestion and none of them worked. I think, in the end, it only is really helpful to do this when there's not anyone else around as it just gets too much, even with your camera set back.

I think that this is a very skipable little quest...

Oh and as a side note, DO NOT use the "/script SetCVar" suggestion unless you know how to work the code as I tried it and now my camera will not reset to where it was before...

Good lord, this took forever. I spent about an hour on this one. Set your cameras however you like (I found it easiest to just zoom all the way out) but this is way easier when everyone and his mother isn't playing at the same time.

This might be a bit "well, duh," but I also found it a little easier to be in a city that has lighter ground. For instance, it's a lot easier to see the shadow on the stone ground in Stormwind rather than the grassy, eternal twilight of Darnassus. Of course, Stormwind has a denser population, so you be the judge...

This quest was quite frustrating. I read a lot of the advice posted here and for me the best strategy was posted by sirupsen the one to zoom as far out as possible and put the camera in a "Bird's Eye" perspective. This makes tracking the shadow much easier and allows you to better see the direction in which the torch was thrown in case the shadow vanishes.

However, on the initial throw the toss went so high for me every time the shadow vanished. I just ran in the direction I saw the torch go and then watched for the shadow to reappear. It's a bit hard because if you just run out the entire time the torch is airborne you'll probably miss it. I hesitated once or twice. A few misses on your part and you should get the travel speed down well enough.

When you catch and retoss it looks to go in the direction opposite the direction you were facing when you made the catch. For these you can just run in the direction of the shadow and you should be alright. Once I got the hang of it, using the bird's eye camera, I aced it after about 10 tries. The daily is harder since it requires 10 catches. However, I got that one on my second try once I got the hang of it.

This quest does get progressively harder with more players attempting it around you so be wary of chasing the wrong shadow.

Some tips: 1) take off all your +sta items: so you will lose lesser hp after miss;
2) follow the shadow on the ground from your torch (you need to set "spell detail" in video options near 55%);
3) Remember about ping and latency: you may be required to catch the torch when it is behind you;
4) Try to complete quest in cities where are not many people because you may lose your shadow.

I found that when I stood on the bonfire's pedestal, that when I threw the torch, there was no shadow. To counter this, merely stand on the stone ground and follow your own torch's shadow.

Shadows seem to disappear for me at a frighteningly low distance from the ground (less than jump height). How do I crank that up so I can see a torch that gets chucked ten miles in the air?

I did this on the test server a while back and it was impossible. but then they didn't have the Shadow on the ground. inifinitely easier now.

Draenei are glitched with this, they cannot catch the torch, despite being literally right on top of it. I have a feeling this is similar to the Lurker Below in SSC, which draenei have a problem getting onto his platform after jumping into the water.

I can verify this, because I went onto my night elf druid and did this quest first shot, while on my draenei I had close to 10-11 times failing a day before I've had it work.

For alliance, to do this really easily (I did the "More Torch Catching" on my first try today, yesterday I tried over 20 times and gave up) here are some tips:
- Go to the Exodar, it's a lot easier to see the shadows, it's usually less crowded than most other cities, and the catching area is pretty clear from objects.
- If you're a Hunter, put on Aspect of the Cheetah, it works wonders :)
- Unsummon any pets, companions, etc.
- Use your mouse to turn
- If you lag like me, stand a little bit infront of the shadow when it comes down
- Have a lot of patience, on the daily "More Torch Catching" you have to catch it 10 times!
- Some people say that jumping before it lands helps, it usually does, but it can cause other problems (over jumping, etc) I never had to use it anyway

This quest is TERRIBLE.

Unless you're getting some sort of hardon from Burning Blossoms, I see no reason to do it.

I don't know what Blizzard was thinking. While it is somewhat easy after you find some sort of trick, there is no universal trick that works -- what will work varies depending on the aesthetics of your bonfire's location, and the graphic settings / capabilities of your computer. By the time you realize that this quest sucks, look it up on wowhead, try various tricks until one works for you, you could've got a plethora of blossoms, xp, gold, rep or whatever in any number of ways other than this mind numbing quest.

One thing I've consistently noticed is that players performing this quest have trouble locating where the flame will land. Just stay a little behind the shadow that appears, as most people run in front of it thinking it will travel further. And it doesn't hurt to have a mage make you some food, as this quest really wears down your health! ; )

After following the advice I found here, I also found that the only way to consistently catch the torch was not to be right on top of the shadow, but just behind the shadow. After trying over and over with a few characters, I finally found this gave me a much higher chance of catching the torch. Whether it's latency, or just how it is, I don't know.

For all intents and purposes, this quest is actually fun...and somehow, at the same time, it can be terribly frustrating if you don't know just how to do it.

ok i HATE this quest. Tip this quest is easer to do somewhere where it is not crowded. first time i tryed it was in SW and there was yonks of ppl doing it. and i kept getting hit by other ppls ones and had to start my 4 all over.

Do this in Exodar.

1. There are fewer people there, which raises your fps, and eliminates confusion as to which shadow is your torch's.

2. The ground is a smooth flat color, which makes it easy to follow the shadow.

High fps (frames per second) is important for this. I turned all my video effects down to the minimum, and bumped the shadow detail setting up until I could follow the torch's shadow on the ground (didn't need much with Exodar floor background).

Watch from high above your toon, and make sure you're where the torch is when it lands.

I found this quest to be easier by zooming out as much as i could and making the camera angle look straight down at my characters head. I finished the quest in one try that way. Piece of cake.

The lag is not friendly for this. Need to run at least 2m ahead of the flame shadow if your at about 500ms (international player).

lol. I'm the kind that likes to figure out the quest/method on my own. So, I was able to do the 4 catches by going into First Person, and flinging the torches up, with my camera aimed straight up. Over 40 years of catching pop-flys, it's pretty instinctive...natural...but in game, a bit tough. Often takes me 3 or 4 tries. Odds are too long for me to try 10 catches.

Also, when I went to TB, and looked at that setup....well, there's no Warning Track there....

I found it the easiest way to do like this:
1- Bind the torch to a hotkey, you only need it once, since when you catch one, it will be tossed up into the air automatic.
2- Remove gui with Alt Z.
3- Place your camera at max distance right above your toon.
4- Toss and follow the shadow.

This really helped me out a lot: when following the shadow on the ground, make sure you stay IN FONT OF IT slightly. I was sort of lagging slightly behind it, and I wouldn't "catch it" that way. Make sure you're slightly ahead of the shadow.

/agree with the tips from the posters above. Also:

I found it easiest to catch torches in Ironforge (if you're alliance...) because its darker... and the floor has a plain texture - making for better torch visibility. Though best if you can do it at a time of day where there aren't many people around or it will lower your FPS, and make it harder to see which torch is yours...

Speed enchants like this OR a meta gem like this help (a little) too. Or popping a Swiftness Potion if you're getting desperate!

an alternative as hinted to already for those who many not have the processor power to max thier particle settings for the shadow tracking strat is to zoom into first person view and look straight up. I did that approach in thunderbluff for my baby tauren and again in darn on another character, both perfect runs the 2 quests combined to about 3 minutes work.

very simple just go to first person while standing next to fire, look straight up 90 degrees then fire off the unlit torch, follow its progress so it remains centered, dont run backwards turn and go forwards if it goes off on an angle. For this strat to work best you need an area with as few physical obstructions. Other torches shouldnt be an issue if your torch is centered in your view, its not going to fly off elsewhere midflight. Also as stated you may need to run in frnt of the torch, if thats the case just keep edging forward till its more or less going to crack you in the back of the head, that should be enough for the lag to be compensated and the catch to be a success.

Also as stated this strat is risky in TB for any hordes reading, but its served me for all characters i have done the torch catching on over 2 years of the event. Just an alternative for those unable to max thier settings, i could these days but am too trained at the look up throw up approach lol

For Shammies - ghost wolf is great. When following the shadow, regular running leaves little margin for error. But in wolf form, you can keep up with the shadows much more easily.

"More Torch Cathing" - seems that you don't have to complete it to continue questchain leading to The Fires of Azeroth as it is not included in the achivement list ("Y">World Event> Midsummer). Only Torch Juggler is (juggle 40 torches in 15 seconds in Dalaran..! and I havn't tried that one yet.

Definitely do this one in the Exodar as mentioned above. I was the only one there and it was MUCH easier than in SW. And I can also confirm that you want to slightly overrun the shadow for the best chance at a catch.

Best tip I've read all holiday: You can pretty much assume it's going to get thrown again opposite of the direction you were facing when you caught it, so when you get to where it's going to land turn 180 degrees instead of just waiting around for it to land.

I normally do not post negative stuff, but I can't believe how stupid this is. Don't bother attempting to try this if you are under level 20 and not a Druid. You simply aren't fast enough to chase after the torch on the second throw.

I was just going to come here and say that no matter what I did I could not get 10 torches (and most times wondered how I ever got the intial 4) until I grouped with a hunter and got the speed buff.

So.. summary of tips.

- go to video settings and turn up shadow detail (game menu > options > graphics > right side under effects max out shadow quality and particle density)
- do this in either ironforge or exodar, and with minimal people around (i.e. middle of night or early morning)
- have camera pointed straight at ground and scroll it back as far as it will go (/console cameraDistanceMax 50 and game menu > interface > camera > right side on the camera following style set to "only horizontal when moving")
- toss torch (stand a bit away from the bonfire) and follow the shadow
- stay just ahead of shadow, and turn around just before torch lands. you will always have to go the other way on re-toss. Don't stop running ever till you get to 10.
- Group with a hunter and get speed buff, or use swiftness potion or (someone said but not sure) mount up when you toss the torch initially

Good luck all (and to everyone that posts how amazingly easy this is, stop the egotistical bullcrap bragging cuz we all know its not)

Seems like 4.1 it's slightly bugged and takes luck..

You're with the shadow and it's not the right size to land and it will prematurely land and you have to start over, now it's not every toss and if you got speed boosts you can get far enough ahead to be where it lands anyway. That's why some people say it's easy and some hard.

Another good way to do this is go to a less populated area, such as exodar. I found it a whole lot easier doing it in exodar as the shadows are a lot more visible and there is few/no players around to put you off.

I don't know if this is only problem for people who has all settings on ultra, but i saw "two" shadows. One circle-ish shadow and one shadow that looks like a stick. It was IMPOSSIBLE to follow the stick looking shadow. It could go 10 yards north and then suddenly go at like 400% speed south.

If you have these "two" shadows, follow the circle one! :)

A lot of good advice on here, but I'd like to add that the easiest place to see the shadow and track it that I've found is in Iron Forge. Everywhere else I went, I was having difficutly tracking because of the ground coloration/shading.

If you are a mage, use the Glyph of Rapid Teleportation. Portal into SW and run fast to the Fire. That one minute of 70% speed bonus is more than enough time.

This is a pain trying to chase the shadow !
Tips (some from others below) :
#1 be somewhere there are not many other people. reports below indicate that their failure may cause your failure in this quest.
#2 zoom OUT and DOWN (view from above) so you can see the shadow more easily
#3 if you're a druid, use "dash" (yes, you can do it in Cat form). Rogue, use sprint. Others, any speed addition potion or spell
#4 use your mouse, not keyboard to turn - it's a LOT faster

I couldn't do this with Aspect of pack or cheetah until I got a swiftness potion. Turned my graphics up to ultra and all my mods were off. Followed the shadow well enough after that.

For warlocks who aren't used to having/using a speed buff, there's a talent in your middle talent tree called: Burning Rush

You may have to change your (lvl 60) talent first though
To do that you'll need one of these, or two if you don't want to keep Burning Rush and change back to your previous talent after you're done

Luckily Stanly McCormick, Inscription supplies vendor sells all three mentioned items in "The Scribe of Stormwind" shop, just outside The Stockade, on the same square where you get Torch Catching

Depending on your level you'll need:
Below level 81, but in this case 60 through 80, you'll need:
Vanishing Powder
From level 81 through 85 you'll need:
Dust of Disappearance
Or from level 86 through 90 you'll need:
Tome of the Clear Mind

For level 60+ warlocks:

Zoom out as far as you can while you can still see the shadow
Set your camera's point of view to birds eye view (looking straight down on your character), as described by other posters on this thread
Throw your torch in the air
Activate Burning Rush (bind the spell to an easy accessible action bar button for the duration of the attempt(s))
Follow the torch's shadow
Catch 1, 2, 3 and 4

Now you should easily be able to follow the torch's shadow and finish this quest almost effortlessly
Don't forget to cancel Burning Rush after every (failed and/or successful) attempt

At the fourth attempt, when I got used to the increased movement speed, I completed Torch Catching
And I'm an average player at best

Suddenly the follow up daily More Torch Catching which required catching the torch ten times in a row, not four wasn't too much of a challenge anymore
By no means I'm saying it was easy though

I knew about Burning Rush but because of the drain on HP I didn't use it, and so it didn't dawn on me right away that I too could "show off" ;) my Torch Catching skills, like most druids, rogues, hunters, and other players/classes, with potions or speed buffs, were doing

If you're having trouble with this quest, you're probably attempting it in a populated area where there are multiple torches being tossed. I failed something like 20 attempts in Orgrimmar until I decided to hitch a ride to Undercity.

Seems Exodar is a good place as there is more room and shadow is easy to track. It seems the trick is to keep moving... catch, turn around and run the other way asap to where the shadow is going.

Tried his with my Warlock, late last night. Failed multiple times. Had to go to bed. Today, I did not have torches to retry.
Tried today with my hunter. Got knocked out of game by a glitch. The hunter can't regain the quest either.
Any suggestions?

A recommendation: DO NOT do this quest in Stormwind, Orgrimmar, or any other popular city. Your shadow can easily get mixed up with others, and I was on 7 in a row on the daily when someone else missed his, the explosion hit me, and the knockback meant I couldn't catch the 8th one. Do it in Exodar, Silvermoon, you know, cities nobody likes.

This applies to the one-time torch catching quest, the one the page is supposed to be about, not to the repeatable dailies. It may apply to them as well, but I find the torch catching quest to be annoying enough to avoid doing those, and so am not in a position to verify that.

Unless the mechanic has changed, you must do the previous quest, Torch Tossing, and this quest in order to turn on your toon's catching the Juggling Torch. Without this ability, you cannot complete Torch Juggler. There is really no other good reason to do this unless you are hard up for a last few blossoms.

Simple version; stand by the bonfire, click the unlit torches to toss one up into the air, track and follow the shadow, be there when the torch lands. You will auto-re-toss the torch; continue to track and follow until you complete four in a row.

The truth; this is annoying as =bleep=; but you can make it marginally better.

Even one other player doing this at the same time makes it much more difficult. Come back later.

If you can't see your torch's shadow, adjust your graphic settings. (Don't even think about why a light source is casting a shadow when the ambient lighting is not all that bright too start with.)

As the say in real estate, location, location, location. Avoid Storm Wind City (and Orgrimmar for Horde) because the response in the heavily populated cities is enough worse to affect your completion rate.

Hotkey initiating each attempt by dragging the Unlit Torches onto your tool bar. You don't want to delay running after you initiate the toss.

For the first toss of each attempt, the catch is very forgiving. You can be near the landing spot. For subsequent ones, you must be slightly ahead of where the torch lands. If you are standing exactly where the torch lands, the torch will explode.

Doing it once on a toon grants the ability; you do not have to repeat it each year, although it's not like tossing torches is much of a thing in WoW. It can be; multiple toons with the ability to catch these specific torches can toss them back and forth.

After multiple attempts and failures, I finally succeeded:
maxed particle density and shadow
went to a low pop area
drank a swiftness potion.

I failed repeatedly with just the changes to the visuals and location, but I had success the first time after drinking the swiftness potion. It may not be a factor for all players, but running speed was my biggest issue.

Shadow? What shadow?

I've been trying this for two days now, without success. I've even considered buying a swiftness potion, as suggested by Maizey last year. Then, just now, I decided to try a few things that are free first, before I went to the AH. I realize why I am finding this so difficult. I don't see any shadow from my torch! Nothing. Even as it falls to hit a yard from me and knock me back, no shadow. Twice I was able to catch it the first toss (by random luck, I guess) and never saw a shadow even as I caught it. Is the quest bugged this year where the shadow isn't working?

I upped the "Shadow Quality" setting to its highest possible level: Ultra High. I've tried three different cities (Stormwind, Ironforge, and the Exodar). A couple of times I was able to see the torch in the air as it headed to the ground, so I knew where on the ground the shadow ought to have been... nothing. I watched carefully twice as I actually caught the torch... no shadow.

So far, all my attempts have been made at night, I have never tried this during the day. But nobody has said that you need to do this during the day. I'll come back later, when it is daytime, and try again to see if that solves the problem. But if this is only possible in daytime, someone ought to have mentioned that by now.

I don't suppose I will ever get this completed if I can't see any shadow.

Make sure you are stopped when the torch hits.

Follow the shadow as best you can but stop moving before it hits and you will catch it.
It instantly gets re-thrown - repeat.

Guys - do this in the Exodar - makes it 1000 times easier. I tried first outside Darnasus. I couldnt see a shadow to save my life and the torch went so high in the air. In the Exodar the floor is super smooth and super easy to see.... I suppose you can do this at ALL the fire sights but just saying it was an easy experience there

Tried it for over 30 minutes in Stormwind, almost to the point of rage-quitting the game. Then I made three changes (thanks to some hints in this thread):

Went to Ironforge (better ground, and no other people)
Instead of my usual 30 FPS I've set the graphics to 60
Instead of Low shadow quality, set it to Ultra

Completed on the 4th try :)

Other things that – probably – helped:

Zooming out quite a bit. You can zoom out past the normal limits with console commands or add-ons. I was over the normal limit, but not at the absolute max.
A relatively fast toon. I had 143% movement speed.

As of 2023 this quest is easiest done in The Exodar.

How to complete:

Adjust your camera to a top down view and zoom out
Use the torch
Look carefully on the ground for a small round dark shadow
Stay close to the shadow
You character will catch the torch and automatically throw it again - it usually goes behind your character
Repeat the last two steps until you get credit for the quest (Note the quest does not update till you catch the torch 4 times - so don't worry that you don't see it counting up attempts)

if you fail keep trying it took me 4/5 goes to get the idea but once I did it was pretty easy.

I for the life of me could not get this done on my prot warrior night elf. Just could not be quick enough to get to the third or last torch flip. I was so annoyed I thought 'why not?' and removed all her armor. Got it done on my second try after that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So as of 2023, any time I try this, I get to the third throw and it goes too far out of the way for me to get to, even using speed boosts.

Honestly could not do this on my main, switched to druid and was done. Took longer to log in than it did to finish the quest and achievement.

2023 Took me a number of years - I kid you not - but finally got this done. With this setup, it was on the first attempt. And looked easy, like I've been faking Failure all the other years. Grrr.
1. Zoom up and over, like the sun looking down, no horizontal plane. Lock it off Default key (ESC) > Options search for CAMERA (controls) then camera following style NEVER ADJUST CAMERA
2. Use a druid. I used Cat Form
3. I set up a nekkid set in Equipment Manager (right hand button in character window) and only had a low level cloak (my Guild portal cloak) with Enchant Cloak - Haste (or it mightve been greater haste). I kept on a shirt and guild rep tabard, cos modesty :) This did seem to stop the circle from being too great a distance from me. iLevel based difficulty?
4. Org sucked, so did Stormwind, I eventually did it at Thunder Bluff in spite of the Tosser who kept mounting various mounts in the tossing area. FFS.
5. Go to Options again , search for Particle (particle density ultra), Shadow Quality Ultra High and Projected Textures Enabled. I wasn't having an issue seeing the small circular shadow, just keeping up with it, still, that's what I had set in options.
6. I used no other speed sets, no potions, just locked off the camera shot, nekkid druid, and graphics quality settings.
Now off to Dalaran in Northrend to stand under the low ceiling and finish this friggin' achievement. Wish me luck! xxx

Stand in a town bonfire and a little button should appear next to your request to start this.

Had to drop the quest 6 times before the button appeared, so this is VERY buggy

Description

Now that you can throw a torch, let's see if you can catch one!

Take this stack of unlit torches. Go to the bonfire and throw a torch high into the air. Catch it before it hits the ground... then throw it back up! Catch four then come back to me.

Careful! They're dangerous if they hit the ground! Good luck!
