Fairly simple, while you're on this ghost ship - there will be a shoreline they kind of ride along. There'll big a big elite stone giant that everyone's shooting at, click on the big cannon that appears right next to the captain as many times as it takes to kill the giant. Once its dead - run onto shore and loot the booty and then go back to the other island at about 38,79 (My guess?) and reboard the ship.

You do not need to tag him or anything. Don't try to take him on unless he is two or three hits from being dead. He hits about 2.5k on my ret pally.

The big cannon didn't spawn at any end of the ship as of Nov 14.
I used above method of hopping off and killing him when he got low, worked fine.

You dont have to go back to the isle if you jump off, just wait for the ship to stop.
Then swim in front of it then bugg jump into the bottom of the boat, just a tip :D

You do not need to be credited with the kill.

As soon as I got the quest, I jumped off the ship, and swam east to the shoreline. There was the lootable corpse of Sorlof. I looted it, swamp back to the island, and waited for the ship to return.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR THOSE WITHOUT FLYING MOUNT:

After you have looted his booty, you can swim into the water, and go under the ship, and if you jump, you will after some attempts land on the floor in the lower level of the ship, where you killed for blasting powder. Then you can go up and deliver, without having to wait for the ship to return to the boarding place.

Just be sure to loot the booty and get away quickly, he has a short Respawn time and hammers your ass if you're still close to him when he reappears.

Hi, indeed Mercy travels this same roundtrip all the time. So there's time to look at the npcs. You can anytime get on board from 39,78. The cannon was in 1.2. on front deck. When Sorlof falls you just jump of and swim to ~41.73 to collect item. Then back to starting point 39,78(opposite beach) and turn it in. No need to hurry or try to catch Mercy at the same round. Cool earning with no fighting needed.

Ps. I watched sorlof being shot at several roundtrips and I can't confirm that he fell down just by the npc fire, but seemed to stay standing when Mercy made the turn away from him. So some shooting by you is propably required.

You can loot the booty even if somebody else has killed him - the booty remains on the ground for a short period of time for anybody to snag. :)

Getting the same problem on Gundrak-US. He's not spawning while I'm on the boat and once I leave it and head to the shore, he appears and wtfpwns me :(

The gang plank for the Mercy is bugged, too. I fell off it trying to board the ship the first time, it despawned so I had to wait for the ship to do a lap before trying again (successfully, this time!). Then, after getting help to kill Sorlof, it despawned after my first attempt to board the ship (I know, I'm too eager!) and now it's not respawning at all! Agh!

If you're having trouble seeing Sorlof from the boat, try increasing the distance on your video settings. If you're running you settings too low he'll be too far off in the haze.

Apparently I posted this on the page for the container, Sorlof's Booty, and not the quest of the same name, so here it is again.

Sorlof showed up for me as the boat pulled up to his strand. The crew took a couple of shots at him, and then he just vanished while I was firing the cannon. I mounted up and flew over to land and he appeared with 63% health. I went back to the boat, tried to fire the cannon at him again, but once again he vanished as I lit the fuse. Flew back to land, he reappeared, still with 63% and then reset back to the starting end of Sorlof's Strand and did not regen his health when he got there. I hovered there, waiting for the ship to come around again. When it did, he started to chase it along the shore, his health dropping to 61%, but like I saw the first time around, the crew took a few shots at him and then stopped, which is probably where the loss of HP from 63% to 61% happened. Sure enough, the next time the boat came around, he dropped to 59%. Also when you're hovering over Sorlof's Strand, you can't see the pirates on the ship, just the boat moving along.

I came back later with a theory. As the pirate ship comes around the curve and just before the pirates start firing their guns, you can shoot the cannon and hit Sorlof. I hit him at least 4 times doing this in one pass and I knocked off a very noticable amount of health (from his bugged 42% to 19%) when I mounted and flew over to see the results. You'll need to go around the loop to shoot him again, but this quest is doable while this bug is in effect, or at the very least Sorlof is damageable. I was able to kill him on the 3rd go around. You will need to make sure that he has reset to the south end of the Strand where the encounter begins, or the cannon and the pirates will not shoot him. A flying mount comes in very handy for this, so I don't know how much help this method may be for someone without.

This quest is bugged, I can't complete it, been trying for 1/2 an hour.

If you fall off the ramp while getting on the boat, the ramp disappears and you can't get back on
You can't see Sorlof from the boat, but as soon as you jump off he magically appears right in front of you to smash you, and since you can't see him from the boat, you can't shoot him with the cannon either.

Is bugged on Dark Iron. Although you can still kill him with the cannon. Every time the ship pauses just start shooting the cannon like crazy, after about 3-4 passes hop onto to the shore and you should have killed him by then.

Quest seems to be bugged on Llane.

Sorlof seems to be in a different phased zone as the ship. When I fly over Sorlof's Island, I can see him, but when I land back on the boat to shoot him, he disappears. I'm just going to log over to a couple of my level 80s and kill him for my lowbies...

Edit: He can be soloed easily by a level 80 DK. Just Army of the Dead and you might not even get hit before he dies. I had plenty of time to log back onto my alt and loot the booty afterwards.

If you have the glitch, read this:

I found a way to avoid the glitch, and I think I know the cause of the glitch. DO NOT AT ANY TIME USE A FLYING MOUNT DURING THIS QUEST! I could not do this after two hours trying, then I stopped using my flying mount because my mouse had a glitch. I abandoned the quest, then, I acually swam onto the island that the boat docks at(38,75), walked up the ramp, re-accepted the quest. This won't look like it works at first. Walk to the cannon(front of the ship), and as soon as the boat stop, begin firing. At some point, sorlof will appear, if you have been firing enough. Keep firing until he is down, but DO NOT USE A FLYING MOUNT to get the booty, it seems to cause it to phase. Instead, Jump off the boat, and get the booty. the SWIM back to the island that the boat docks at(38,75), wait for the boat to come round, walk up the ramp, and turn in the quest. Jump off the boat.

Flying onto the ship causes sorlof to phase.
Flying off the ship causes sorlof's booty to phase.

I just finished this quest about a half hour ago, on Twisting Nether. It worked like it is supposed to; the cursed sea dogs started shooting, then i saw him and started blasting. He died, I jumped off and grabbed the loot, ran back to the island so I could board the ship again, turned in the quest.

There is a strange phasing issue with this quest.

I tried everything including relogging, quitting wow entirely. Walking onto the ship etc. What I did notice was that the elite was already at half health when I took this quest.

After giving up walking, moonwalking, dancing and every other way of getting onto the ship I could think of, I logged my warrior and killed the thing on foot.

Relogging back to the druid I was trying this quest on meant I could simply pick up the treasure loot from the ground and hand it in.

I still can't figure out how/why it was on the wrong phase but its easy to tell if it won't work as all the cheering and gun noises never start.

Still bugged on Antonidas. Doing this quest on my 72 druid (who has epic and cold weather flying), I cannot see the giant from the ship. When I fly to the land, he appears but disappears when I return to the boat.

Put in a ticket. Will wait for a while and come back and not fly to the boat and hope it works.

Ok so obviously this quest is bugged on a lot of servers. And it seems the only other option is to kill him with a lvl 80 character. Well I tried what Aomknight said, but I don't have a flying mount so I just didn't mount at all. So here is what I did:

1. Abandon the quest.
2. Walk/Swim to the island where the boat docks.
3. Walk on to the boat, accept quest.
4. Walk to front of boat and wait.
5. Once you are in Sorlof's Strand, the crew on the boat will start to fire and that is when YOU start to fire.
6. Jump off the boat, collect the booty.
7. Swim back to the island where the boat docks and turn in quest.

NOTE: If you are at the part where you are suppose to be firing, and no one on the boat is firing, then it is still bugged for you. Also another thing, I had my "View Distance" setting at high.

I hope this helps. Remember, DON'T MOUNT AT ALL! Walk and swim. No mounting whatsoever!

Edit: I would also suggest not even firing the gun until you have to. Don't get curious...at all lol

Also, having trouble doing the trouble shooting that has been suggested. I couldn't find where the ship "docks" because the ramp didn't spawn the first 3 times I waited at the island. A fourth time I got on the ramp as soon as I saw it, and it DESPAWNED RIGHT UNDER ME while I was walking up to the ship.

This is most definitely a phasing issue that has not been resolved, at least on my server. Dark Iron.

I first attempted this quest about a week ago, and had the phasing issue then. But I tried it again yesterday, and it seemed to work perfectly (Sorlof appearing, the cannon firing, etc). It may just be that the server has good days and bad days. Just keep trying on this one; if you're trying to get Kalu'ak rep, this does shave a day or two off doing dailies to get Exalted.

I believe this quest is bugged on Thrall. I've tried everything listed here and nothing works, I kill him with the big gun, walk off the boat and before I get to him his body disappears and there's no looting. I look around and he's respawned at the end of the area where you first begin shooting him.

It's definietly based on your computer. On my notebook I was not able to complete the quest, but on my PC with grafical settings on the maximum, it took less then a minute to complete. Kinda bugged :/

I spent half an hour tonight trying to do this quest before giving up. I think I'll try bunganga's method tomorrow. The worst part though was that after my last attempt I activated my Hearthstone to go to Dalaran and for some bizarre reason it dumped me in the ocean far enough to the south of Northrend to suffer fatigue. Fortunately I had my Gadgetzan teleporter on me so I didn't die although I can't say it was a good way to end my evening.

** This Quest is half-bugged! **

Half-bugged means, that it is impossible to complete it in intended way. All reports above are correct. "Aomknight"-s comment is not working though. There are some tips to complete this quest. Personally I made through this quest as lvl 75 prot warrior.

- You must kill the giant using normal way, your own skills. Orlof is lvl 80 elite with ~125k HP, so if you are low-lvl to deal with him alone, I advice you to bring a lvl 80 equipped enough friend or hire someone strong for about 40-50g if you need this quest line to be completed so bad.
- Orlof does not restore his health after being evaded.
- Orlof is afraid of water. So keep fighting on the coastal line and in case of "Achtung!" (when you life is below 20-30%) jump into water's swimming area. Let him evade and run away from you. Go out to the coast, restore HP, track him, finish the bastard and loot your booty.

It took some time for me to make this clear. I downed Orlof with 4 tries without deaths keeping him evaded when I was low on HP. Probably they will fix this quest in 3.3.0. So use these tips until that patch.

This is how I did it, since none of my friends were on and I couldn't get people in the zone to help. I have an 80 Pally tank, I logged on him (I have two World of Warcraft running), came on, found him, and aggroed him. Then I opened the other WoW, got on my Death Knight, the one with the quest (yes, same account) and found myself being smacked by this beast. I sat next to him, went into the first WoW (I was disconnected) and killed him on my Paladin. I quickly logged back onto my Death Knight, got the reward, easy peasy.

Edit: No real reason to rush. I hearthed on my Paladin, wrote this, when I reopened WoW, he was no where to be found, but the treasure was right there. Happy hunting!

Ended up wasting like a half hour on this quest, trying to figure out what the heck was going on before I read all of these posts. Eventually just logged onto my 80 Paladin, downed the jerk and took his lewtz. GG Blizz, especially with the "working as intended". Maybe a little fix with level 68 flying please?

As my husband stated: It's bugged, the ship and his island are on different phases/instances suddenly.. on the ship you can't see him, and on his island you can't see the people on the ship.

I stood on the ship by the gun, as did my husband, he wasn't appearing. Our third pass, my husband lingered in the air above the island on his flyer while I stayed on the ship... Not only could I not see him or Sorlof, he couldn't see any of the NPCs or players on the ship. Definitely bugged (Grizzly Hills US)

This quest is well ans truely bugged. I tried the method mentioned above when I encountered the same problem, of Sorlof not appearing on the island well on the boat, and yet when the cannon and crew phase out on the boat, he appears. I tried the no mount, walk on gang plank method, but still encountered the same issue.

There is some repree however. Sorlof doesn't need to die by the cannon, he simply has to die in order for him to drop the loot you nee (the pile of gold). The only method I found that worked now was using my lv 80 main and killing him outright, and quickly changing back to my alt and picking up the gold from him (it counts as a world pick up not a loot pick up).
If you don't have a main ask a friend or someone maybe in the area to help you kill him, because blizzard seems to have ignored the bug on this quest.

Just did this quest with my rogue, however he wont drop the item needed to finish the quest. I've done it in every possible way, kill it with 80's not using flying mount etc. He just wont drop anything.

Still bugged as of 12/28/09. Had to log my 80 DK on to finish the quest. No amount of logging off and logging on or abandoning quest seemed to resolve the issue. Flying mount was irrelevant. From what I can tell, there is no way to fix this once it happens. Easy kill with a lvl 80 DK so it will save a lot of time to just get help from a lvl 80 instead of trying everything in the book to get the quest to work.

Recommend to solo this guy(if you can) without using the gun if he doesn't appear when you are at the boat.

He is easy soloable as a Survival hunter with a crab as tanker (Blood of the Rhino might be needed).

Just put Growl on, MD and Mend Pet and nuke.

Still bugged. Couldn't see Sorlof from boat. Ran to land and he was there. Go back to boat and he wasn't there.

Was able to solo him with level 76 pally. Stood near shore and did as much damage as possible. When mana was out and couldn't heal any longer, walked backward into water where he couldn't reach me. Kept moving back until Sorlof would reset back to his 'spot', then move back to land, drink to regen mana and repeat. When he followed boat, I'd chase after him to keep him in sight, but not sure if that was necessary or not. Took about 8 rounds of damage to take him down.

I flew in .......... First run on ship ... didnt see sorlof at all .... went round again crew started firing ... sorloff appears ...2 cannon shots downed him .... jumped off the ship only had a couple of seconds at body before it disappears .... flew back onto ship .... went round again .... this time crew started firing sorloff appears and it takes 5 or 6 canon shots as he moves around a bit .... jump off ship and quickly grab booty (looks like pile of gold coins) between his legs .... he disappears a 2 seconds later .... I mount and fly up and a few seconds later can see sorlof walking along the shore from my mount .... so is it fixed ? ...who knows?

I also tried this quest today, on Crushridge (US), and although I never at any point used a flying mount (do not have cold weather flight), I could not at any point see Sorlof until I hopped off and went to the island. As I'm level 70, I can't even hit the mob, so dying over and over isn't a viable option, making this quest impossible to complete unless I get a level 80 or similar to come kill him for me. Epic fail - and I say this particularly because Blizzard has clearly known about these issues for quite some time now. Incredibly frustrating.

Today however, the quest worked just fine. Don't know what the problem is..

It's odd that it works for some and not others. I tried this a month ago on another toon and couldn't see him, so I expected it to be the same today. However, I was shocked to see him while I was on the boat. It worked just fine for me today, so either I just got lucky or they actually fixed it.

note sure if this would work everytime, but it worked for me
with my Hunter i was doing this quest while another player was doing it, was standing on boat, and told the other player to keep shooting the cannon, while i Eye of the Beast my pet, and ran with my pet to the island, and it phased both in.

talked to a GM today and he said it was a phase quest and was suppost to be done be4 u learned flying skill in northrend so u was suppost to enter the ship from the island where the phasing. start if u fly in, it is bugged.

Couldn't get it to work after six tries. Finally, I abandoned the quest while the boat was already in position to fire at Sorlof, then went to Ellis and accepted it again, and Sorlof instantly appeared. So that might work for others. (You can tell it's working when the crew members suddenly start firing their guns.)

Quest is still bugged with the phasing as of March 17th when i was doing it on my Hunter. Like other individuals, i just brought my 80 Prot Paladin, beat his ass down to drop the booty, then logged back on the hunter to pick it up. Still recommended you bring a friend or another toon of yours who can solo him to get the loot rather than worry about the ship and cannon method.

I think that with the newest patch, it was fixed. Tried this quest about a dozen times and none of the tricks mentioned worked. Tried it after the patch, and worked first try.

Confirmed that abandoning the quest once you're in position makes him appear (not the re-accepting). Alternatively, you might be able to just accept the quest once you're there.

I don't know if everyone misses the same thing I did or if the quest really is bugged...

When you kill this guy, wether you use the cannon or not, he will not be lootable. However, between his body and his arm there will be a yellow patch of gold. That's what you're supposed to loot. I saw this patch four times on four kills when I tried to loot him, but I didn't think further on it before I realized it was clickable.

So, He's not lootable, but the item is between his arm and his body.

I couldn't find anything in these comments about what I am posting so if what I say is in these comments somewhere pardon me for reposting it.

If you happen to get to the point where the ship is heading back to land and Sorlof isn't dead yet you can keep firing the cannon until you get the message "Sorlof's booty falls to the floor." I don't know how far away you can be before he is considered out of range but I was able to down him when he was heading back to the other side of his beach and the ship was turned away from him. I didn't reach the dock island yet though.

So this whole quest line, from the shoveltusk fiasco to this, needs a huge scrub clean. But what boggles my mind most is "why in the nine hells are we giving all the gold to the pirates who rob graves and harass the tuskarr that we're trying to gain rep with?"

Seriously, did anyone else see the "Bring that booty back to me and ye'll get your cut - the shield..." And think "Dude, I got the shield when I got the booty. I'm gonna go sell this stuff off and return the shield and you're graverobbing arse can shove it."

Still bugged as of today, post 7.3.5. He appears as an 80 elite while I was 78 but I don't know what the new normal for him will be after the scaling patch. Killed him with the cannon, jumped off to loot and he disappeared. Fly back to ship moments later and he appeared again with a nearly full health bar. Shot at him again continuously but the ship sailed away before I could finish him again. Fly over to where he was based on the map and he was there with about 35% health. Soloed him down on a 78 rogue (barely) and looted.

I can only guess that maybe you are supposed to be able to loot him from the boat and jumping off the ship was the mistake. That would some sense in a quest designed for non-flying. It is a sprocket wheel loot to get the "booty", FWIW. You can also loot him in the traditional way but that is just gray garbage.

When it says his booty falls on the floor, it is a pile of coins that falls out underneath where he dies. He is not lootable himself. He respawns pretty quick but the booty seems to stay for a little while longer.

This quest is annoying to do post Shadowlands level squish, when you're under level 30 and don't have a flying mount yet. There are no ropes or ladders to board the ship and the method mentioned in the comments suggesting you swim underneath the hull and "jump up" didn't work for me. I initially boarded the ship by using a Goblin Glider from the cliff on the mainland. To get back on after I'd looted the treasure I jumped into one of the cannon windows. If you can't get past the cannon, try the other side of it (some cannons are misaligned in the space so one side has a bigger gap than the other). This might not work for bigger classes, though (I was a female Orc). Oh, and beware, you'll probably pull the entire room full of mobs.
