We present the final cinematic from the Sanctum of Domination raid, depicting Sylvanas' fate at the end of
her encounter
.
Story spoilers in the cinematic below as well as in our written recap!!
The cinematic starts how one would expect, with the Jailer and Sylvanas victorious. However, when the Jailer boasts that all will serve him--something awakens in Sylvanas, as she vows to serve no one, and defiantly shoots the Jailer.
The Jailer, unperturbed by Sylvanas, unleashes the chains binding Jaina, Thrall, and Bolvar. He leaves with the Arbiter's sigil and Anduin, who discards his father's compass--a symbolic shedding of his humanity (or perhaps, a
coded message
left behind to help us). However, as a parting gift to Sylvanas, he reaches into the ether and restores a blue crystal, claiming that she helped restore something stolen from him, so he'll return the favor.
The Fate of the Jailer
While Sylvanas' fate is the more-compelling story for longtime Warcraft fans, it's also noteworthy that the Jailer says something was stolen from him, a statement which sets up future story for him and the Arbiter. In the
first covenant chapter
it seems that the Covenant leaders believe the Jailer was exiled for trying to steal forbidden keys of knowledge. Yet according to the Jailer, something was stolen from him--contained in the Arbiter's sigil. It's made visually clear that the Jailer gains power from consuming this sigil, as his chest cavity lights up and he's fully armored. And of course, it's a mystery where the Jailer is off to, as his portal looks otherwordly, with elements referencing everything from the Light to the Brokers.
The Fate of Sylvanas
As for Sylvanas, it's unclear what the Jailer restores to her at first as the camera takes care not to focus on her immediately after she absorbs the crystal. However in the final moments of the cinematic we see Sylvanas look up at the camera, her eyes restored to blue for the first time since the Jailer's bargain. The Jailer has given Sylvanas back the missing half of her soul--which may still not be apparent unless you've read up on other media and future covenant chapters.
Lore fans familiar with the recently-released short story
"Sister is Another Word for Always"
will be familiar with the theory that the Jailer has been hoarding half of Sylvanas' soul all along, similar to how we saw Uther's soul split by Frostmourne in
Afterlives: Bastion
. We also encounter the Ossuary of the Banished in a
future 9.1 Covenant chapter
, a vault of the Jailer holding souls he deems valuable like Uther and Lana'thel.
It appears that the Jailer has been holding onto Sylvanas' soul for quite some time, possibly since her death at the hands of Arthas, which adds another layer of context to her actions in recent expansions. It also changes the power dynamic between Sylvanas and the Jailer, if he manipulated her all along while she assumed she was taking back control of her destiny. With Sylvanas' refusal to serve anyone, the knowledge that she was serving the Jailer all along, coupled with the restoration of her soul, could lead to some
very
interesting directions for her character development in future story patches. It will also be interesting to see how Sylvanas' complete soul will view her actions in recent expansions, and if those wronged by her actions under the Jailer will be willing to forgive her.
We have an in-depth analysis of the Sylvanas short story if you'd like to learn more about the split soul theory. This story also hints that Sylvanas' soul was originally meant to be sent to Ardenweald, which could explain why Elune was hesitant to allow Tyrande to kill Sylvanas during the Battle for Ardenweald.
