We had the opportunity to take part in a group interview with Game Director Joe Shely and Diablo General Manager Rod Fergusson and ask questions at the Diablo IV PR event in Berlin, Germany. Topics include leaderboards, gambling, clan activities, Season Journey rewards, the future of Diablo III, UI improvements, combat pacing, and more! The interview was held in March between the Early Access Beta and the Open Beta of Diablo IV.

Renown and Altars of Lilith in Seasons
Will the Renown system and Altars of Lilith reset with every Season?
Joe Shely explained that Seasons in Diablo IV use a similar philosophy to Diablo III in terms of providing a fresh start with an equal footing for everyone. Some systems will be tied to your account and in some cases they will carry over between Seasons.
Renown Overview Altars of Lilith Guide
Secret Cow Level in Diablo IV
Will there be a Secret Cow Level?
At launch, Diablo IV will have a gritty and grounded world. A cow level, wings, or pets take away from that groundedness. As they go down the line things will loosen up.
Leaderboards
What will leaderboards look like in Diablo IV?
Leaderboards will be included post-launch. Joe Shely elaborated that they are an excellent tool to track progress for competitive players, but they can also present significant challenges in terms of encouraging botting or the usage of exploits, depending on how they are implemented. Leaderboards need to be fair and well-maintained. They should be connected to competitive activities and not general activities. Leaderboards make people look at the top of leaderboards and sway people into playing a certain class or build. Blizzard wants to make sure that they get leaderboards right. In the absence of leaderboards at launch, the Level 100 Boss will be there to prove your strength.
Maybe we could get leaderboards similar to the Conquests in Diablo III which focus on a challenge specifically made for competition.
Speedrunning type of activities and Nightmare Dungeons are good areas for competition. Many of the planned Season features will be good for competing.
Gambling
At BlizzCon 2019, you said that the best gear will be available through gambling, is that still the case?
Super rare Uniques, which are much rarer than the regular Uniques, were added since then which may not be available through gambling. Joe Shely added that they would double-check on that to make sure this information is correct.

Clan Activities
Are there going to be clan-specific activities in the future, like organizing a clan World Boss raid?
More features for clans are planned post-launch. There is currently no organized structure to fight World Bosses with multiple groups but Joe Shely added "it is a cool idea".
Season Cadence
The last Seasons of Diablo II: Resurrected and Diablo III started within a week of each other. Are you looking at maybe widening that gap between Season launches for the different Diablo games?
Blizzard will try to have a more predictable cadence for Seasons in Diablo IV and move Diablo II: Resurrected and Diablo III Seasons around Diablo IV's seasons.
Diablo IV Seasons Explained - Season Journey Returns, Up to Four Seasons a Year
Season Journey Rewards
In a prior Quarterly Update you talked about the Season Journey having unique rewards attached to it. Does this only include cosmetics or also gear, like "Haedrig's Gift" in Diablo III?
Joe Shely explained that the Season Journey includes "power-based rewards" and "is not monetized".
Cosmetics
What cosmetics can we expect?
A wide variety, including more cosmetic types after launch.
Wardrobe Overview
Future of Diablo III
Will Diablo III continue to have new Season themes or will they start repeating after Season 28?
Season 29 will have a new Season theme. Rod Fergusson elaborated further "it won't be as rich as Season 28". Starting with Season 30 previous Seasons will be repeated. There will be "a mix and match of previous cosmetics and features that made up previous Seasons". Future development efforts will go into Diablo IV.
Damage Multipliers on Gear
Are we going to see big multipliers on Uniques in Diablo IV, similar to Diablo III?
No. Joe Shely explained that they want to "reduce the overall scaling multipliers and damage numbers in combat ". Their focus on implementing Legendary powers is to create new builds or to have them change builds. The philosophy of reducing the overall scaling multipliers applies to Legendaries, Uniques, and also Sets (in the future).
Joe Shely added that Sets can be great for having a cohesive look and that they can be excellent for new players that don't want to create their own builds, but they can have the negative effect of simplifying interesting builds that are available by taking up a lot of item slots.

Uses for Differing Item Rarities
In regards to item rarities on an endgame character, will every item rarity have a purpose in Diablo IV besides salvaging them for crafting materials or will we run around with only Legendaries equipped?
Joe Shely explained that they don't expect that Normal or Magic items will be powerful in themselves in endgame builds. The developers are interested in there being uses beyond salvaging for those items. Rare items will be important at endgame, partly because of their use as bases to upgrade them to Legendaries at the Occultist.
Normal and Magic items become more powerful as you unlock Ancestral and Sacred items at higher World Tiers, thus becoming relevant at early stages of those World Tiers.

Developing Diablo IV
How hard was it for you to meet the expectations of the DIablo player base while also doing what you wanted to do?
The notion around the pressure of having players like different entries of the Diablo franchise is that you would still find what you are looking for in Diablo IV. Rod Fergusson elaborated saying "We want Diablo IV to be your favorite Diablo and if you've never played before we want it to be your first. has the dark tone of the original Diablo, plus the persistent progression of Diablo II, plus the visceral combat of Diablo III, plus the new innovations of freedom of choice and the shared open world. That has been the challenge, especially with the 11-year gap between Diablo III and Diablo IV. You have to respect the past, because if you don't and it is all new, then people will go "that it is not a Diablo game". If you do it all nostalgia, they go "there is nothing new here, why am I playing this, this is the same old game, and why did it take so long?" For Joe and his team it has been threading the needle on enough nostalgia that hardcore Diablo players love what they are playing, but enough new that you feel like we have moved the genre forward. I feel that our story is a new high-water mark for Diablo. I think this is the best story that has been in a Diablo game."
Focus Until Launch of Diablo IV
After receiving feedback from the Diablo IV Beta, do you have a specific focus on what you want to change before launch?
The server infrastructure being ready for launch is the most important. They also want to focus on class balance and difficulty balance.
UI Improvements
Will the UI be updated with additional quality-of-life features before release?
There are some points that can be addressed between Beta and release. Joe Shely said, "the UI will not dramatically change in that period of time, simply because there is not enough time". Some issues like bugs need a faster transition and others are more complex problems. Joe Shely added, "we want to be accessible to players. There are a lot of factors
Future Endgame Content
Are there any planned endgame activities that you haven't revealed yet?
Yes!
Inventory Gem Tab
Can you please add a Gem tab to the inventory?
The feedback will be passed on to the development team. One of the things that the tab inventory allows for is to have flexibility in where items go.
Jeweler Crafting Overview
Combat Pacing
Will the combat pace of Diablo IV increase over the course of its Seasons?
Diablo IV is intentionally paced in between Diablo II and Diablo III. Joe Shely elaborated: "As you add more things to a game, things tend to speed up. Our Season design is such that this will be less of a concern".
