Ok, I spent hours in Shadowmoon Valley trying to get to this area. I climbed all over the place! Drove me right up the wall until I finally decided to try and come in from the Spires or Arak side.

I went into the Bonus Objective area on the eastern border of Spires (with the Chimera's) and looked across the river at the cave (screenshot included). I saw a ramp up the side, so I swam across. I kept going up and ran across some lvl 100 mobs, and started killing. Soon enough, I found the Voidtwister (big guys focusing on some mobs in bubbles) in the little camp area (marked with the X on the screenshot) and got the lantern from there. I used one, and picked up another for just in case.

I kept heading upwards and around, and was able to get back over to Shadowmoon Valley, and used a goblin glider to get back to ground.level to get to the Gara quest area to complete.

The mobs do hit hard, harder than the usual 100's. But then, hey, when you get Gara...it's worth it.

At least one of these will need to be killed as part of the BM hunter epic tame quest, to obtain the Void Lantern. A video guide for the quest can be found here: http://youtu.be/euk6C97pyvg (Also includes a map for getting to the zone they are in from the Spires of Arak side.)

This was -by far- the hardest part of my Gara tame; I did it at level 91 just as a challenge.

The Voidtwisters come with pet Void Alpha or something mobs. I hate them so very, very much--they hit like trucks, and at lower levels your pet just is not going to keep aggro.

I tried it with many, many methods, over about three full gear repair sets--tried tanking with turtle, tanking with spirit beast, bursting it down with Stampede, etc.

In the end what worked for me was using a spirit beast set to Ferocity, growl -off,- and bursting with Stampede, then kiting the mob up the river as best I could until he died. I had to get lucky with landing a trap on the wolf, since they miss so much at 91.

Fly or make your way to the Arakkoa flight path on the shore--the hut, just north of the Pillars. Ride or swim downriver until you find a stone ramp going up; a single Voidtwister and his wolf path up and down that. That's the easiest one to go for as a lowbie.

Hey, i'm a BM hunter and i found it finally..
You need to fly first to Akeeta's hovel. Then you need to go to the left side of the path (to spires of arak). When you walk you will see a cave on the left side, don't go in it, but continues on the path. Walk.. walk.. walk.. and you will see a camp (Pillars of fate) with lvl 100 mobs. Go in the camp and in the middle of the camp you will see the Shadowmoon Voidtwister with a void wolf.
Kill it and you will get the Void lantern! :)

Fly to Akeeta's hovel, run on the shadowmoon valley side along the river.
To avoid a lot of mobs: before you enter Pillars of Fate (70/27,2) Jump down the river and run south/east to Lost Veil Anzu
@ (71,6/30,2) you see on the left a way up .... the first mob should be a Voidtwister

you can drop down to the river after getting the flight path, then just head south to where their camp is, there is a ramp going from the river to the camp which has one of the voidtwisters as patrol, you can safety attack him without worries (at least there weren't any other mobs along the ramp when i went through). As note: all the "quest" items have a 100% drop rate if you have done the prior requirements, the drop rate marked on this site is completely inaccurate as it keeps track of every mob killed regardless of the quest status that enables the drop.

If anyone is wondering why the mobs hit so hard, it's because the normal and conventional levelling and quest progress in Spires results in you being able to call upon the power of Terokk (a champion of the Arakkoa in times past), which makes short work of most mobs in the zone with a semi geared character.

If you want some tips though for those attempting before 100:

- save interrupts for the Shadow Heal on those dark casters!

- stay away from anything purple. Normally these are traps which explode, causing damage to you and your pet. I would assume it would hurt a lower level a lot more than the 5% of hp it takes off a level 100.

- Kill the totems that those Voidtwisters spawn! It provides a 90% damage reduction buff for any closeby enemies. You'll struggle to kill them otherwise.

- Make sure you have a quick escape ready afterwards. You can probably just jump off the cliff if your hearthstones aren't ready to the east, it provides the Explore Spires meta if you've completed the rest of the zone and you follow the river below to the south. Two birds with one Gara, am I right?

This NPC drops the Void Lantern, part of the Gara tame quest or beastmaster hunters. It has a pet which looks just like Gara and hits hard! So be prepared. Luckily, it drops the Void Lantern on the first kill (assuming you are on the correct part of the quest. It won't drop if you are not).

Even at 100 these hit very, very hard. Be sure to burst totems as soon as they're dropped, interrupt the channeled spell, and be ready to also take a lot of incoming damage from their wolves. Of all the mobs in all the daily hubs so far these have given me the most trouble.

Fly to Akeeta's Hovel, Gorgrond and leave Duskclaw heading southeast. Follow the path and do not take the left turn into the cave but stay on the path southeast until reaching Pillars of Fate. There are two Shadowmoon Warrior guarding the entrance and many Shadowmoon Defiler channeling crystals and patrolling. Beyond them you will see the Shadowmoon Voidtwister patrolling and on guard with their pet Void Alpha. works well again to get through without conflict.

Void Lantern is unique. You can only carry one, but you can use one and get the one hour Void Lantern buff, then kill another Shadowmoon Voidtwister and get one to take in your bags for latter if needed. Remember that when you use Void Lantern and get the Void Lantern buff you appear invisible ... just like , but the bad guys can still see you and will swarm you like they did me. It gets confusing.

Hunter's only need to kill one Shadowmoon Voidtwister for the Void Lantern to drop.
How to tame Gara the Spirit Beast

This is also the location of one of the daily Apexis Crystals quests you can get in your garrison. There is an elite here - Voidreaver Urneae - that has quite the kick. Be forewarned, if you don't have the buff from completing the Arak Spires quests, this npc can be quite difficult. I was thinking 'piece of cake' until I had killed about 5 Voidewakers and still hadn't gotten my lantern. I realized I had skipped a step and needed to return to Gara to use the effigy.

If you're like me, and wanting to do this part as a level 90, you're going to need help for reasons that should be pretty clear.

Be aware of that you have to talk with Gara BEFORE starting to seach for this Lateren and then it will drop 100%!

Hey I am trying to Tame Gara but void lantern isn't dropping. Has anyone else had trouble with this? I am wondering if it got bugged after the new patch.

I am having this issues as well. I followed all the steps, retrieved the lantern. Went to the tree and into the void and he never showed up after almost two hours in the void killing. I gave up for the night and repeated all the steps only now no lantern? I had a friend with me the second round also a BM hunter and the lantern wouldn't drop for him at all.

I too am having trouble with this quest. The Voidtwister is just not dropping the lantern at all...I have killed dozens.

98% refer current and future Hunters to the step-by-step guide posted under Gara by Niecho (in 2020 even!). The only updates are:

FROSTFIRE RIDGE: Thunderlord Giantslayer is a single huge NPC patrolling in a gully just down the side of a small mountain. He patrols around into a cave where there is a fire (inside the skeleton's mouth).

"GO TO FLIGHT PATH @ AKEETA'S HOVEL IN SHADOWMOON VALLEY - HEAD NORTHEAST AND ENTER SHADOWMOON FROM HERE"
= should read as: "TAKE FLIGHT PATH TO AKEETA'S HOVEL IN SHADOWMOON VALLEY - HEAD SOUTHEAST AND ENTER SHADOWMOON VALLEY FROM HERE"
(if you follow the OP directions you might assume you enter the SM Burial Grounds dungeon, do NOT enter dungeon area at all)

The Void Lantern places a 1-hour void aura on you called Void Lantern similar to a shadow priest. You can loot only one (1), but once you use Shadowmoon Voidblade at the Great Tree Valuundira you can go back and kill another Shadowmoon Voidtwister to loot another Void Lantern (that you can take in dungeons/raids and look oh so snazzy!).

NOTE: You can only seem to tame one (1) Gara spirit beast, but you can tame unlimited Lost Netherwolfs IN THE SAME VOID INSTANCE. In other words, tame Gara, then ride/fly NORTH to /way 65 37 and you'll find a single Lost Netherwolf snoozing under a small tree.

Tame Lost Netherwolf, wait a minute or so and another Lost Netherwolf will respawn. Tame all you like, or just stick with the two already tamed.

Fun fact: A tamed Lost Netherwolf does NOT keep its name, BUT its name changes to a kewl "Spirit Beast" instead. A spirit beast named Spirit Beast. Enjoy!

NOTE 2: In Dragonflight era, most mid+ level Hunters can 1-shot Xan w/o needing pets up. Take your 1-2 and then have slots to tame 2-4 more spirit beasts if you like. Xan spawned maybe 30 yards north of the void dagger tree you start at. So once you kill Xan, tame Gara, then go straight north to tame Lost Netherwolf.
