If this does end up being removed; it won't be being removed because it's a reference to something and being taken the wrong way.

It'll be removed because it's not a reference to anything and being taken the wrong way by a group of people who are so self-absorbed that they think everything is directed to them or someone they know.

So just remember, if it does get removed. It's Blizzard's way of bringing those people their pacifier to suck on just before nap time.

I like this mob and don't find it disrespectful in any way. He was unknown to the people in duskwood and they gave him not just a grave, but a tomb. To me this shows respect for that fallen Soldier even through no one knew him.

I can't kill this mob. It makes me saddened and sober even if it would be his release from an undead curse he doesn't want (I'd think he'd be part of the horde if he did) nor asked for.

P.S.
The location of this tomb is also a very nice place to visit. There's trees all around and a little waterfall coming off the cliff into a small pool that wanders away from this peaceful resting place. It's the kind of place that I would curl up and read a book or three, if there wasn't a tomb of course.

It's also away from common traveling places like say, the road. Very peaceful. Good job bliz.

His skull*, name and soldier status also makes me think of the DC Comics figure The Unknown Soldier - "The Immortal GI".

Of course the obvious reference to the (never officially named) Tomb of the Unknown Soldier applies, too.

As a fellow vet, I give him a moment of silence and respect before battle.

I was lucky enough to witness the actual spawn itself...which was quite interesting. The Unknown Soldier actually pulls himself up out of the ground then kneels before the tomb.

A most interesting soldier instead. His armor seems to indicate he was an Alliance warrior, but he has the skeleton of a Vrykul. Was he a human whose body took on the appearance of his ancient ancestors? Or perhaps a Vrykul who in death thought himself human? Alas, we shall never know.

It's changed for some reson, when I visited the tomb I could kill him. It seemed kind to release him from his unwanted waking so that his soul may be layed at rest. It is a really touching refrence to, in life, all those soldiors who go, fight, and die for us, and sometimes we simply can't trace who they were. I thank that all unknown soldiors should be remembered with as much thought and beauty as blizzard put into this little place. It's a nice place to just sit and think. Thanks Blizzard.

If you are using the Death Knight's Control Undead spell, he has 2 special abilities, Commanding Shout and Sundering Cleave.

I kill all rares.... but I couldn't bring myself to kill him.

I just landed, dismounted, saluted, and flew off, leaving him to his eternal vigil.

I believe this might be a reference to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. This too has soldiers (living) on eternal vigil.

Maybe this book (The Story of Morgan Ladimore) refers to him, there a high chance to be, though. I killed him, and then, after some quests, I receive this book, and right after the first lines of reading it became so connecting..

This guy was up at 5:15 Eastern time.I was in the area and decided to see if he was around. Almost walked away without killing him, killed him and immediately felt bad lol. I'm glad he is in a out of the way place. Give the guy some privacy you know? Subsequently I've decided to take this poor guy off my "rares to hunt" list.

It's an interesting npc to say the least.
What we know about him is that he was a male human due to the fact that his gravestone has a statue of him.
He was a soldier of high rank due to the armor he wears, he's also buried in a tomb and not a regular grave which is also a sign of that.
How high ranked he was is hard to tell, he could've been an admiral or some type of commander or marshal, but lower than that is not likely.
Because he uses the abilities "Commanding shout" and "Sundering Cleave" he was obviously a warrior.

How he died is also hard to tell, but probably in battle, or else i don't think he would have gotten such a grave.
It is likely he was killed by the scourge, otherwise i don't know how he could've risen out of his grave, Duskwood is filled with undead from the scourge which supports this theory.

His life was much about war, and therefor his grave is hidden away in a peaceful place.
His faction was Alliance but if he would sometime in the future get a faction it would probably be horde, but it is likely Alliance would accept him too as they accepted the Death Knights.

That his body is a vrykul skeleton model creates many theories, but it is likely a blizzard employee chose the coolest looking model and didn't think about the relation.

A friend of mine came up with the idea that he could've been a bodyguard to an Alliance king.
He could also have been a soldier/commander to the armies of the king of Lordaeron - Terenas Menethil the second, but the fact that this npc is wearing Alliance armor makes that theory very far-fetched.

I've always wondered about the story of this npc, and i've realized these small hints gives quite a clear story.
He's kneeling in front of his grave til this day in 5.3 since vanilla, it's quite sad that there isn't more about him, hope we'll see more of him some day.

There are lots of "Tomb of the unknown soldier " IRL, this is just Blizzard adding one in WoW. A lot of people in the comments are saying that he was a vykrul because he has the same model, but Blizz is known fro recycling the models of npc's and buildings.
He's just an unknown human war-hero. I remember how shocked I was the place when I first saw it back in Vanilla and how amazed I was to see the added npc. after Cata.

For the ones farming Bandit Gloves, its pretty simples. Took me 2 days farming, was leveling an alt and left my main on the respawn. It takes about 1h respawn.

You just see him, clad in the armor he fought and died when he was alive. You can't bring yourself to kill him. You just /salute him and let him continue his eternal stride...

I don't know why everyone refuses to kill this mob. I, as a Paladin took holy sword to the undead monstrosity, and put the trapped spirit within to rest. Then I saluted him, after blessing the remains.

The unknown soldier is Anduin Lothar!

I had never actually looked around enough to notice that the two brown things flanking the memorial are not trees but actually large statues similar to those seen by the dark portal. One of the attached screenshots portrays one of the statues well.
