Special Abilities

Incite Chaos – Mind Control effect on all party members for 15 seconds, can not be removed or resisted and Blackheart disengages for the duration. Wipes agro.
Charge – Randomly targeted charge that deals about 300-500 physical damage.
War Stomp – AoE knock back deals about 1000-2000 physical damage. Wipes agro.

Strategy

The nasty part about Blackheart is his Incite Chaos but first to avoid him getting cranky we will want our tank to back up against a wall or into a corner to avoid being thrown by Blackheart’s War Stomp, also makes it easier to build agro back up.

There is not much to help with Incite Chaos since you will not get a warning and seems to be randomly activated, Hunter Freezing and Frost traps can help to reduce some of the damage, and also keeping pets on passive will help. Everyone should blow their cooldowns upon the engaging of Blackheart as Incite Chaos will blow them otherwise.

Remember, you must completely clear the room that Blackheart the Inciter is in, or otherwise when you pull him any un-killed mobs will aggro onto the group.

Completed this encounter last night with no disconnects, although I think the fight needs a bit of tuning. The amount of mana that is used during the MC can make or break the fight, it's incredibly random.

What seems to be the best idea is spreading out (to alleviate the damage done during Incite Chaos), keeping your back to a wall as a caster, and running back to the tank after knock-back.

Guild hunter, Talok, came up with this. Have your priest/healer stand on a freezing trap. That way, mana gets saved during the MC events.

We're wiping on this guy over and over and over again. We get the MC very early and very often. Had luck earlier today somehow and got him on the first try, group didn't do anything differently than what we are doing now.

The hunter/priest combo works nicely, have the priest stand as far from the group as possible, but of course stay in healing range and have the hunter lay his frost trap. When MC occurs the priest should stay in the trap for most or the entire duration of mind control. Saves a good amount of mana.

Guys MC's me Casts blizzard twice on a chair hitting no one, next MC using coldsnap for no reason iceblocks, following me evocs and uses blizzard twice (again) on nothing.

By all means, blow your cooldowns or he will. We didn't get him, but concentrating on dots seemed to help, as these will continue dps while you mc'd. opposite that however, consider having the rouge run with out poisons on his weapons as these WILL end up on the other members of the party.

2 Things make this fight extremely easy. Blow all your mana before MC and run back when you die. Extremely easy, he hits like a girl and you can easily get back as long as your healers don't die.

Warlocks should burn their mana before the MC occurs so they aren't able to do any damage during it. After the MC, use Life Tap or Dark Pact and continue nuking. The boss is affected by dots even when he disengages, so Curse of Doom works fine.

It's preferable for a person in the party to be running around like an idiot while MC'd than actually doing damage to anyone.

Having two healers helps immensely on this guy (even if one of the guys is not actually healing the rest of the run he can switch for this encounter), it takes a while to kill him but the chances increase a lot. Would like to know how he's different on Heroic as well.

Just ran today and it seems like the Mages werent able to iceblock out of the Mindcontrol. Also if you are a priest try to not have Holy Nova as it costs 833 mana and is an instant..he was just spamming it when he took control of me today...mana gone..

I guess Blizzard just assumes every Priest that plays WoW is going to avoid Holy Nova. If you have Holy Nova don't even bother trying to heal this fight. Your mana will be gone as soon as you get mind controlled.

As a Protection Paladin I found it best to tank him with Seal of Righteousness and a two hander.

Go in with Avenging Wrath on, so he won't use it during and MC.

I think this has been posted before, but I would like to reiterate that Major Dreamless Sleep Potions help a great deal on this fight, especially if you're a healer. Pop one right after he says "Time for some fun!" and if you're not in the middle of casting or attacking you'll probably get it off. Instead of burning 50% of your mana, you're getting ~3600 back... as long as no one AoE's you, which happens a lot. If everyone in your group comes equipped with at least 2 for this encounter, it makes this guy cake.

Just killed him on non-heroic. The weird thing is he was healed for ~35k somehow during one of the MC's. Don't know if it was a self-heal or not, and he's never done this before that I've seen. Anyone seen him use players to heal himself before? Maybe just a weird random fluke.

This fight can be very long. I watched my friend do this with his group and he died 3 times during this fight. He just corpserunned back while others were fighting and just came back to battle him down. Also few other party members died and corpserunned back to battle.
They finally dropped him and went on :)
There was 2 paladins, hunter, warlock and a mage in that group.

Have your group slam dreamless sleep potions before critical moments of Incite Chaos. If you can time it right, you'll have maybe 3 seconds that you're attacking teammates before the spell is over.

Having a bear druid tank makes this easier. Feral charge lets you get back right after a knockback or charge. Faerie Fire also gets aggro right back after a mind control. Just make sure your DPS waits a second or two before unloading.

we tried him tonight with this group :

70 warrior
70 shaman
70 fire mage x 2
70 rogue.

the strategy that worked best for us was to spread out as much as possible from each other, and use all our long cooldown/trinket in the first 10 seconds of the fight.

first attempt we got him to 28%, second one to 1%, 3rd was the charm... with nobody really well geared, i think it work nicely.

The only fight in the game that gets worse as your DPS gets better.

An interesting thing to note, however. On normal mode it is DEFINITELY possible to take him out as long as the healer and the tank are still alive. He doesn't hit for that much and your healer should regen just enough mana to keep himself and the tank alive between MC periods. (and being perpetually OOM limits the amount of damage per MC period)

Still a very annoying fight that has the potential to take a while if he blows all your mana. Since I have all the loot I need out of this dungeon, I'm not running it until I need to for a quest.

If your playing a Warlock, I suggest that you summon your succubus before you start and rightclick the "seduce" button only. Doing this will make you seduce yourself every mindcontrol thus avoiding both taking and dealing damage. Hope this helps :)

On Heroic, this requires good gear and heavy DPS as well. I tried many times with a non-geared group, but one-shotted him today.

Don't pull aggro. He htis like a tank in heroic.

Heroic fight

Same strategy as normal with the exception he hits like a truck ~6k on cloth, and has about double his normal amount of health.
Let the tank establish a good amount of agro before starting any dps, pull agro and your dead.
He mind controls a bit more often in heroic so waste your huge cooldowns before hand, especially LoH for u healadins.
After mind control he usually dosnt head back towards the tank at first, so as soon as it ends everyone needs to run to the tank to let him re-establish threat.
Tanking him against a wall is probably smart considering he does a massive knockback quite often.

For heroic my grp consisted of:

it was an easy instance, we only had a little prob on blackheart, we wiped the first try at 70%, then on the 2nd attempt the 2 locks and fury warrior died at 50% and i died also. i used the soulstone, the prot warrior and i killed blackheart from 50% it was a long fight.

wiped two times 'cause of his mc. second time it got really nasty and everyone ganked the healer. tried freezetrapping healer but we still kept attacking the block of ice thus breaking the effect.

what seemed to work for us (we got him on the third try) was that everyone un-equipped their most vital weapon about 10-15 secs between each mc. I as a rogue removed swords, hunter removed bow and so on. self-nerfing basically.

works like this:

1. attack for 10-15 secs
2. un-equip
3. get mc:ed and hit each other sissy style thus minimizing damage done to team-mates
4. equip and start from point 1.

worked really well and I recommend this strategy. although doesn't do much for minimizing damage from casters sadly, but you as a melee don't hurt them too badly.

Ok, there has been many strats on this boss with many differing opinions on how to take him. He is difficult at first I agree, but after continuous wipes, I created a 5 man spec group to come up with some kind of strategy for him that would work regardless of the group makeup.

Since the creation of this plan, I have had 0 wipes and 1 death (multiple runs) so this is what we have stuck to.

(much of this has been said up top, but this is a compilation plan.)

There are two mounds behind the boss, one on the left and one on the right. Near the walls are two "v" shaped niches which are extremely important.

When facing him, I have the tank grab aggro and run him straight to the left mound and back into the "v" shaped niche. This prevents the knockback from occuring on the tank and allows him to contain total aggro.

For any ranged DPS or Healers, head DIRECTLY to the right mound and back into the "v" shaped crevice there. When Blackheart performs his knockback, you will go nowhere and ALWAYS remain within healing distance of the tank or remain within distance to attack Blackheart. Remember to get into position first before starting to heal or attack. Positioning is the key to this fight.

Melee DPS, this is your time to shine. Any class besides a dagger spec Rogue (who has to be behind the mob for obvious reasons) can sit right on top of the tank and let loose. The stomp will not send you back so you can continue DPS'ing as soon as you land. For Dagger spec Rogues, you are going to get kicked back no matter what, so tey to position yourself so you get kicked back into the other group of players (healer / ranged) and run STRAIGHT BACK towards Blackheart and start DPS'ing.

The advantages to this strategy come about during the "Incite Chaos" time of thie fight. More often than not, the melee and the tank will fight amongst themselves. This is a plus because the tanks take reduced melee damage because of armor class and the melee usually take little to no damage as well. The casters/ranged also take little to no damage as well and is easily healed through once the "Incite Chaos" is over.

Once "Incite Chaos" ends is where most of my wipes have occured or where the group starts to unravel. This is actually the easiest part of the fight if you know what to do and know what not to do. After the MC stops, the tank HAS TO RE-ESTABLISH AGGRO BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING! This includes bandaging and health pots. This is unconfirmed, but I have seen Blackheart aggro someone after the MC that bandages or health pots. Tis can be bad if the tank has not re-established aggro. My groups will wait to do anything (attack, heal, /dance, trade, log off) until the tank hits him again and drags him back to his niche in the wall. All casters and ranged at this point should go back to their respective spots on the other mound before healing or attacking. This lets the tank firmly re-establish aggro and usually he can take a few hits before he needs a heal anyway.

This is a rinse and repeat affair and if followed to the order, this will drop Blackheart like a sack of bricks EVERY TIME.

After this strategy was developed, my group tested this out with a four man group (and we were slightly undergeared) and we four manned this boss. (It took a little longer but no one died).

The random things to watch out for in this encounter are....

He has a random charge to another person in the party, but normally returns to the tank afterwards. DO NOT start running away if this happens. Simply run to the tank so he can get aggro back faster and then return to your respective place on the mound.

Burn ALL cooldowns within the first ten seconds of the fight (or else he'll use them anyways) and try to use them to damage him or heal someone else.

Again, I re-iterate, this entire fight is based on positioning and letting the tank re-gain aggro AFTER the MC.

The key to this fight is survival. Make sure that you don't kill anyone, and make sure that nobody kills you.

Un-equip damage-dealing gear.

Replace it with gear that gives you armor, resilience, stamina, resistances, mana pool, and mana restoration. Treat it as a PvP fight, because, in a way, it is.

Keep your health topped off with bandages, potions, healthstones, and your own heals so that you're not low when the Chaos starts.

Run to your tank after the Chaos.

Be patient. So long as the tank and healer stay alive, he'll go down eventually.

Tips for shamans:

Try to have your stoneclaw totem dropped near a dps player before Incite Chaos. When mind controlled your dps friend will attack the totem instead of the party. It's hard to time it right, so you may drop it whenever avaliable. Also, 'rocky' (Greater Earth Elemental) can be helpful since he doesn't hit hard and has a great taunt skill.

If any caster is in the party, try to use grouding totem. It'll eat at least one spell when Incite Chaos happens.

I don't know if this has been said or not, but try and taking off all your weps before he does his MC. This doesnt always work for casters of course, but if you have rogues or warriors, or any other melee classes, take off your weps to take down your damage.

Of course i dont know if this EXACLTY works, but mid fight against him my hunter ran out of arrows and my weapon broke (i had backup arrows and a backup weapon in my inventory) and i hit for like 50 damage, if i hit at all. It saved a little bit of damage done to our group.

One thing a group that i was in tried that seemed to be successful was to have myself (the tank) positioned in the 'room'/alcove to the far left with the pillars, and have the hunter misdirect to me. I then backed up against a wall to help with the knockback effect. The pillars and the more confined space seemed to limit his random charging and kept him in a smaller space, allowing aggro to be more quickly established in the confusion after MC.

Blow all your coodowns, but warriors, keep your fear shout (locks too i guess) and your 'come to me mama' AoE shout, as these will work to your advantage when MC'd. At least u can withstand taking damage if u attract other party members to attack u :). Haven't tried the trick mentioned above of removing weapons, but will give it a go next run.

When we fought him, he burned 2 of my r11 HLs on myself at full health... Not sure if it was because I was away from everyone, or if bliz really does hate pallies, but if anyone has a way to stop this, help.

Or, any tips in general for bringing the party back up after the MC for a pally? It's hard to heal everyone up both because of mana and aggro... Might just be the gear though.

It's always a good idea to check your buffs after a MC because he will cast other buffs which will replace the ones you had up, making the fight that much harder.

Some people say that Blackheart takes you over an you should use all of your cooldowns immediately. I believe this is incorrect. He is not like Baroness Anastari in Stratholme. She charms you and makes the best use possible of all abilities.

Instead Blackheart simply Incites Chaos. This causes everyone to randomly use abilities. As the MT I sometimes shoot my gun, sometimes switch stances, sometimes use Battle Shout, etc.

I say this because I believe using all cooldowns early in the fight is a mistake. I save my Last Stand and Shield Wall for later in the fight were they might be needed. I believe there is a random chance these cooldowns might be invoked but it is not worth spending them. There is no order or plan to how Chaotic characters use their abilities. That is why it is called Chaos.

All i have to say bout this guy is to burn all of your CD's ! Especialy the DPS classes ... I did that mistake on my 1st run when i was PoM Pyro spec ... Nuked the healer :S
Btw KhrosEitrigg well the other time when i was specced 11/47/3 the other mage was PoM Pyro and he nuked me so i think there is a big chance that your CD's get wasted on your teammate's

Melee classes and tanks, unequip all your weapons just before the MC hits. Casters, unequip all your crit based items and trinkets. This should minimize the damage the party will receive. I dont know if a macro can be written for this but you can also put Level 1 trash items into your backpack for replacement of your main weapons and keep your backpack open in order to easily right-click to swap the items.

We've done this on normal a few times now (someone always wants the starting fragment for Kara :-)), sometimes ending up with only a Druid tank (me) and a Hunter left alive, with 50% left to go, he doesn't hit that hard, the leadership of the pack buff should see you through.

We did notice something on the last few tries though. The guild priest was having issues with blowing holy nova or prayer of mending when under the MC, when she removed them from her toolbar it seemed like the rate dropped a lot and conserved her mana. We're yet to confirm but will try it out

Hunters and locks dont dismiss your pets (because of passive bonuses like blood pact and spirit bond) but rather put them on passive and this lessens the damage recieved by your pets; If you want to do more dmg and keep your pet in the fight (provided that the timing of 20 secs for first cast and 1 min afterwards is correct for MC cast) then use your best judgement as when to set ur pet on passive and call him/her back
(Unconfirmed) Place your pets on passive and tell them to hold position and they MIGHT not do anything at all except sit there turn red then back to normal

EDIT: This guy doesnt hit hard so if you die you may be able to run back to the instance and join the fight to prevent a wipe, HOWEVER!!! most groups do not kill the group of mobs on the right side of the ramp leading to the room with the first boss, and it can get pretty nasty if you get MCed into these mobs (found this out the hard way >.<)

Other people in my run of this were all complaining about how difficult Bleakheart is. I tanked him with my feral druid and we got him first time. The thing that each of their groups had in common when they did this was a pally tank. Paladins can tank, but because Bleakheart gets everyone doing everything, the Paladin's busy burning his mana under the influence, so when it wears off the pally's mana pool is empty. No mana? No agro control. Wipe.

The Mind control ability can be very devastating as an dps spellcaster as Blackheart will use random spells on your group, causing your mana to drammatically get low very fast.

Just downed him with a random 70-group. I dont know how though since I (mage frost+arc) was out of mana, rogue dead and hunter dead when Blackheart had 50% health. Warrior + Paladin managed to take him down by themselves from that he had 40% health.

In other words, the thing that makes this boss hard is his "Incite chaos" ability.

If you die during this fight and attempt to run from the graveyard to join your group that's still fighting, be aware that you will be mind-controlled even at the beginning of the instance. So, it might take a bit longer for you to get back into the battle than you had anticipated.

best bet is to have an off healer such as a spriest who can just turn back and heal incase the healer dies. In that case just have the healer res straight away and just run back to continue healing. Also a resto shammy should place earthshield on themselves as staying alive is their main priority.

Something that I haven't seen posted here (though I may have just missed it) is that for this fight in particular, you can corpse run and still have a shot at killing him. If you die, release immediately and start running back to the Shadow Labyrinth. As long as at least one person is still alive, you can usually make it back to the fight before a total wipe.

Doing this, I managed to arrive after dying right as the tank was killed and Blackheart was at 1%, I shot a couple arrows and he went down with me being the last one alive, just back from the dead. Time for fun, indeed.

Very interesting occurence transpired recently. I was running this boss with a regular group as an elemental shaman, and during the second Incite Chaos, Blackheart made me use Elemental Mastery. I waited for what I thought was the inevitable chain lighting to devastate my party, then realised I wasn't moving.

It became apparent I had actually EVADE BUGGED. My health and mana recovered in two great ticks, as is customary with out of combat computer-controlled creatures, and I was able to down the boss with great ease thanks to my replenished mana pool.

Sadly, Tremor Totem cannot be used to break the charm. Players under the MC will go berserk and treat everything as hostile, including their own totems.

The first thing my shammy did when she got MC'd was walk right up to the Tremor totem and smack it with a healing mace.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe this boss has been significantly nerfed. Recently, during MC the party members being to attack the boss. Unlike before, where you would only attack your own party members.

After the latest patch, I've always killed him during his mind control.

Just did this today on Reg, and can confirm the above two posts. Anything and Everything is hostile, pets, totems, the boss itself. So yes you can still be hitting him during the Incite Chao, so (it's more like just plain confusion.

Easily soloed as an 80 DK (17/0/54) with heroic gear (though I think it could be done with much lower quality items).

You do not need a key to get into Shadow Labs. I flew my mount up high enough outside the door to take fall dmg and die and then rezzed on the other side of the door.

Once inside slabs, you can walk straight to the room with Blackheart without any aggro (just follow edges of the 2 prior rooms).

Clearing the Blackheart room is the hardest part, remember to take down the shadow priests first as their mana drain works on runic power too. Once the room is cleared, Blackheart is a total pushover. If you're solo there's nobody for you to attack when he does his mind control so you end up attacking him for the duration of the spell and he just stands there and laughs. Full on DPS with maybe 1 or 2 Deathstrikes to keep yourself topped off.

Good luck farming http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27891! Maybe they'll add more than 2 +def trinkets to Northrend some day and we won't need to go farm lvl 70 content.

Some very valuable information for all you solo-mons out there like myself(enhancement shaman), this boss IS killable alone. I was curious about this when testing him, and as he was standing there, laughing about me beeing mind-controlled, I destroyed my flametongue totem and then started beating him down, by the end of that mind-control I think I took around 15-20k HP from him(free damage). As for retribution paladins, this will be even easier, since you don't have any totems to be destracted of.

You can do the dungeon quests solo now :-D

Farmed this guy today as an 80 prot paladin and he didn't use his MC on me at all. He still did his stomp and his charge so I don't think he is broken. My guess is if you don't have anyone there or anything else to kill (such as totems) if he doesn't use it.

Funny story: I was running the Labyrinth as a 72 BM hunter with my friends 80 bear tank, my other friends 65 DK and a 75 priest. We were doing fine and had just cleared the guys room and I had to go get a haircut. Not caring that they had lost some major DPS the group went ahead with the fight. When Incite Chaos popped I was running around like a maniac and my 72 pet nearly killed my friends DK. I went after the tank. I, of course was several klicks away and had no idea what was going on. The next day at school I found out and it was hilarious. So, in short, he's a fun fight.
That was my wolf's moment to shine. Never has he kicked so much ass.

Thought I'd mention that when soloing, he apparently doesn't use the MC ability, and is in fact very easy. I expected a toughish fight, but I ended up with max health at the end of the fight (feral dps druid).

Just solo'd as a lvl 80 frost mage, still does the incite chaos, but for some reason the water ele wasn't affected by it and kept attacking the boss. Mirror Images however were affected by it.

I'm a hunter. I NEVER clean the trash. I just go near the boss, FD, wait for the cooldown to finish. Then I attack the boss, send my pet, and FD. The trash won't aggro you're pet, but the boss will. Then you can start nuking the boss.
NOTE: during the MC, i didn't attack my pet, but instead kept nuking Blackheart.

If you're an 80 who's running someone or just going this for the fun of it , I have one tip to give from trying:

DO NOT under any circumstances just run staight to the boss! The whole room will join him in combat and kill you in seconds! So take your time and kill the room.

While soloing Shadow Labyrinth I was unable to loot this boss after killing him. I suspect that the reason is related to the fact that I was under incite Chaos effect at the time. I did still get rep for the kill however.

Alongside Cho'gall, Blackheart the Inciter was one of the few two-headed ogres within the Shadow Council. He was dispatched alongside Vorpil to investigate Auchindoun, and remained there for many years. In time, Ner'zhul, Teron Gorefiend and Kilrogg Deadeye fled to Auchindoun to take shelter from the pursuing Alliance armies. They had been unaware of the presence of other orcs here, but Vorpil and Blackheart welcomed them. When presented with news of the betrayal of Gul'dan, Vorpil pledged himself to Ner'zhul. When Danath broke into Auchindoun to rescue Kurdran, Vorpil and Blackheart fought to stop them, but were beset by ghosts of dead draenei. In the confusion, Danath slew Kilrogg Deadeye in single combat. Ner'zhul and Gorefiend teleported themselves to the Black Temple, and Vorpil and Blackheart fled back into the Shadow Labyrinth. Till this day they remain there, tampering with cosmic forces such as Murmur. Their followers form what is known as the Cabal.

FYI, yes you still have to kill everyone in the room before engaging this guy. Pain the behind. I should have known better. I found out the hard way. Good luck.

I just discovered the hard way that he does not drop proper loot (blues) unless you kill the first boss. Don't skip Hellmaw!
