I enjoy minimalist, almost Material UI design. However I do feel like Elite/Rare/Rare-Elite frames need something else, and default backpack icon sticks out.
I really hope they fix up the XP bar a little bit. I don't know if it's an issue exclusive to me, but the bar doesn't touch the bottom of the screen and drives me crazy. I've actually disabled the bar and us a WA now as it's much easier to move and manipulate. The art styles look solid, clean and modern but boy does the engine fight using it in an intuitive manner.
I had almost zero of the original UI so when this happened I patiently waited for the addon authors to plod through all the error messages the change induced, and I'm back to my usual UI with almost none of the original in.
It looks clean and modern but lacks personality IMO. After 17 years of playing with a solid UI, it still feels a bit strange to play with the new one but I understand why they had to overhaul it. I hope they continue to work on it, give more options (especially visually, maybe with a legacy version?) and new features.
UI overhaul feels bad overall, was released unfinished (a hallmark of nu-blizz) and a near total rewrite that screws over many addons and addon developers. It's a watered down version of addons like evlui, moveanything and generally using your own scripts to modify your UI how you desired. Edit mode is like discount store brand version of ff14's awful UI customization system. Only hope for many fans is for a legacy mode, or prayers that addon devs can create something to replicate the old UI (which atm is going poorly and causes many LUA errors and taints due to the script rewrite). Alas, as we know that likely won't happen - same as we lost the ability to revert to old models after the character model updates, and no ability to revert back to old spell effects after the spell visual/sound update.
I like the castbar and the minimap, those are the only elements I am using default.
It feels like a missed opportunity for not fixing frames for PvP. Why frames are not symmetrical with both target and focus has combat indicator as well? Now you can't even see if you are in combat, when you in the city with rested animation blocking everything. Target of target frame was blocking last debuff for the past 15 years, and it is still in the game. We can't even see pets hp bar on party frame anymore. I'm sad that PvPers are still treated like second sort citizens in this game :(
The new UI is a total eyesore. I know minimalism and bright primary colours are a mainstream design thing, but this does not fit WoW at all. I'd expect this level of basic phone-it-in design from mobile games or something. Textures, shapes, assets, all stripped down and turned into soulless sticks of colour (so much so that the now the only wow-like thing the gryphon and wyvern and the elite dragon frame stick out like a sore thumb and the rest if the UI doesn't fit them at all). That's like removing the iconic health and mana orb from Diablo and turning into a generic red and blue bar. They also made the microbar actively worse, as the icons are less distinct and are all monochrome now. I thought swtor's ui revamp was bad, but this knocks it out if the park. 0% fidelity, 50-50 on accessibility (monochrome semi-translucent menu wtf), 100% generic, power-point-presentation levels of quality. I'm sure there was a way to make the UI layout more customisable without making it look like trash (this adds nothing compared to AddOns).
Every game I have ever played that decided to redo its original UI has done a terrible job. Sadly, this was no exception. Why they felt the need to do this now after 18 years especially given all the other MAJOR issues plaguing the game I will never know.
The new UI is an utter dumpster fire. 100% flash over form and functionality. And released half-finished and buggy AF. I question the design credentials of ANYONE who decides to take easily recognizable icons such as the micro bar uses and redesigns them to be nearly microscopic, monochromatic, and half-transparent. Meanwhile Blizzard has the balls to brag about the accessibility features they've put into the game over the years. Clearly they don't understand that accessibility issues go beyond color blindness. And with the exception of the gryphons, the new UI doesn't look "WarCraft" at all.
if it's anything like the class/spec devs, Casey Graham is probably THE UI artist.
Still think they should've never touched the UI to begin with. If they were going to mess with it, it should've been a long time ago... like WoD-Legion when they changed the character models, nameplates, main menu options, animations, and all that nonsense. You know, where it would make the most sense. Would it have been too much work? Yeah, probably. Whole lot better than waiting almost 20 years to change it when most people are so used to the old UI, with no way to change it back. It just looks so cheap (like mobile game cheap), it doesn't have that Warcraft feeling to it at all and some of the options are just not there. Just a complete mess. Grey, soul-less mess. By the way, ever heard of color, Blizzard? You can move the action bars and stuff now, but where's the option to move the XP bar or bag bar? Why do I have to go into Edit Mode to move the chat box now, when it was perfectly fine before? (Oh, and even when I do move the chat box to where it was, bottom left corner, it's not all the way in the corner. There's a huge gap.) Why does the mini-map have to be gigantic, do you really think the majority of the player-base is that blind? Furthermore, why are the raid frames horizontal now? What was wrong with vertical, where you could actually see stuff on your screen? Absolutely nothing, and I don't see the option to change it back exactly the way it was before. And the "Classic" option... lol congratulations Blizzard, you've figured out how to move the unit frames back to their original positions...and nothing else. Kind of funny honestly. I could mention other stuff like how awful the unit frames look and how confusing they are now, but that's a whole other rant (part of which was actually solved, thanks to them adding the dragon icons back... from what I remember anyway. Didn't they replace it with stars?) and I think I've made my point anyways. I couldn't even call this half finished.Worst part about it? It ruined Dominos so I have to resort to ElvUI to even be able to understand the UI anymore. Screw that.
I like the new Edit mode. Is it done and final? Of course not! But we already see them adding more elements for customisation so let's see where this goes. I too had very little original UI, having played the game since launch, but now I got rid of everything and enjoy the novelty.
Weren't more beautiful nameplates active in the beta? I was a little disappointed when the release again the old were active
As soon as I saw this post, I knew the comments would go in a bad direction. So here is my take, my opinion. When I first saw the new ui, I thought, "nice, WoW has matured, grown up a bit". I like the look of the ui. Using the ui, the only thing I think was overlooked, is that the mini menu bar needs some colour, I keep clicking the wrong icons. As for this post, Casey has done a great job creating all of these assets and shouldn't be demonised for doing so. The developers that implemented these assets have a lot more to do, were the ui changes half-assed? Absolutely, but that wasn't Caseys job. Let's just hope that the changes being made in the next patch are enough.
I like the new UI personally. The biggest thing's missing are a few key functionalities with raid/party frames and bags. I shouldn't have to download adibags and raid frame addons tbh. Adibags is just a massive improvement over the default. The fact that mouseover cast works on literally everything and there is no option to have it only apply to raid / party frames selectively is ridiculous. If i want to mouseover heal only with raid frames an addon is still necessary. The raid frames need more options for visual customization and adjustment as well. Why can i not show dispellable debuffs as glowing frames like vuhdo or elvui? Also having to go into edit mode to resize chatbox is silly, what if i just want to expand it for a sec then put it back? It now is more difficult to do that than before. Other than that some more visual customization options would make it perfect. Good work but needs some finishing.
Why can't I disable portrait? Why can't I disable resources from HP bar?
