It's been a few years since I last quested in Borean Tundra so maybe my memory is a little faulty there.

At any rate this is how I imagine the story went: In typical gnome fashion they probably just went about their daily business, awoke an ancient threat while merrily tinkering, and then there was a robot apocalypse.Comment by JaceDraccusAs I recall, the gnomes weren't TRYING to revert the Curse of Flesh - as you say, that would turn them into robots, exactly the fate the questline has you prevent (though some of them apparently quite liked it).
